Fernando, You're a font of information. You're right, which you don't need to be told. Thanks. In any event, I've confirmed that, thanks to you and other listers, I finally got my default document the way I want. A note on JAWS' ability to confirm that page numbering is in effect. Here, the commands are alt-v for view, h for headers. You then arrow down through the document. No text is read unless you have text in the headers. Right now, JAWS says only header and footer for my first page, with no other indication that nothing is there. For the second page, where my page numbering starts at 2, the footer shows 2 for page number. It may seem obvious the way I'm explaining this, but it isn't when you go through the process. [JAWS-Users] Issue with Thunderbird latest and pdfs resident on the web
I'm getting a buffering effect on Thunderbird when I scroll the inbox and write messages after reading pdf's resident on the internet - but not after reading pdf's which come as email attachments. The key response delay happens intermittently, but often enough to be a bother until I reboot Windows and Tbird returns to its happy normal self. Windows task manager shows no untoward processes running, so I should have plenty of processing memory. Running JAWS 18 latest build, Win7 and Firefox latest. IE11 insists on opening pdf's in the browser no matter what I attempted (even looking for the add on to turn off) FS email tech support suggests uninstalling JAWS 18 and reinstalling it, but I'm skeptical that it would accomplish anything. Here are the steps to do that. 1. Press windows + M to go to your desktop. 2. Press the letter J until you hear Jaws 18. 3. Press the application key and arrow up one time and press enter on properties. 4. Tab two times and you should hear short cut key. If it says none then press the letter J If it says shortcut key ctrl+alt+J then just press the escape key. 6. Now tab until you hear ok, then press enter. Another dialog box may come up just press yes or continue then you should be done. Now you should have a shortcut key so when you press ctrl+alt+J it should start Jaws. Now if you use the other hotkey that now should work. Mr. Ed -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Miriam
Re: [JAWS-Users] How to open Word 2010's normal.dotm file?
David, thanks again. I did solve the problem completely last night by removing page numbers and starting over, which took very little time. Removing page numbers in Word 2010, for anyone interested, involves pressing alt-n for insert, then tabbing like crazy. There may be a shortcut, but I didn't take note of it. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of David Whitehead Sent: Monday, August 07, 2017 7:39 AM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] How to open Word 2010's normal.dotm file? A new problem after much success. I've located the file normal.dotm, edited and saved it. Unfortunately, I made a mistake and haven't figured out how to undo it. I'll make this as brief as I can. First, several of you gave excellent instructions for locating the file. For me, the fastest was David's via the run dialog. Then at Mike's suggestion, opening the file with the applications key rather than immediately pressing enter gave me the ability to edit the file. Fernando's assurance that control-s would save the file was correct. (Sorry, Fernando, for neglecting to mention that my system is Windows 7. My folder structure wouldn't let me follow your location instructions.) All my initial questions have been answered by this great list. What I'm doing is making my page number location preference my default. As part of that scheme, I want to suppress numbering on the first page. I believe the current error results from my having gone through the suppress page number process before setting the page number location. For what it's worth, I did so because I could suppress the page number through a normal dialog without having to locate and find the default normal.dotm file. I originally planned to put the page number in the bottom right corner, but changed my mind so that it's now in the bottom middle. It seems my most recent attempt to accomplish what I want succeeded. That is, the bottom middle is blank on the first page, while numbering begins at 2 at middle bottom on the second. Here's the problem. the first page has number 1 in the bottom right corner. I haven't yet figured out how to stop that happening. I thought changing the location would reverse my previous location, but not so, although only for that first page. Hi Adrian, Despite the fact that it is normal that JAWS does say anything when you save with CTRL+S if you correctly opened the template for editing (the more you might hear is the sound assigned to the Process Completed event if you have the Office Sounds add-in installed and you checked the Provide Feedback with Sounds item in Word's advanced options), I think the way in which you're being suggested to open template is not the most convenient. This is for two reasons: exact file location varies on Windows XP compared to newer versions and, the most important, unlike standard documents, template files by default create a new document based on them when you open with ENTER, so you need to open the context menu to choose the Edit option instead, like when you are on a standard document you must choose New if you don't want to edit the current file. To directly edit the Normal.dotm template regardless of your operating system, do the following:1 . Open Word and, when opened, close the blank document with CTRL+W. Even when you'll not directly edit a blank document, blank documents are based in Normal.dotm and this file might be in use by a blank document when you try to save it. 2. Press CTRL+O for the Open dialog. 3. Tab to the File Type combo box and select the option for All Word Templates or something similar. 4. Tab to the Address Bar (or Look In combo box if you have Windows XP) and see if you're in the Templates folder. If not, drop down the Look In combo box and choose Templates. If you have Windows Vista or newer and you're not in the Templates folder, tab to the folder tree view and, at the top (press HOME to quickly go there) find Templates and press ENTER to go to that folder. 5. Tab to the list of files and find Normal.dotm and then press ENTER. 6.
