Hi Mike,

In point of fact, desktop icons can be moved, and can be arranged in what
ever manner you wish, you just have to turn off the feature to lock the
icons on the desktop.

I can't remember how to do this off hand, however, of the top if my head I
seem to recall something about using grid lines and other factors in
addition to locking the icons, however, sighted people can, and often do,
move their icons around on the desktop according to preference.

That's because for whatever reason this is how the operating system wants
the desktop icons arranged. I don't think you can arrange them differently
unless you rename them. Like I said in a message I just sent before this 1,
the OS controls how desktop icons are arranged by a large degree. It's
something like the system icons appear first, then your shortcut icons

Hi Dennis,

That's because for whatever reason this is how the operating system wants
the desktop icons arranged. I don't think you can arrange them differently
unless you rename them. Like I said in a message I just sent before this 1,
the OS controls how desktop icons are arranged by a large degree. It's
something like the system icons appear first, then your shortcut icons
depending on what sort order you choose from the context menu. Also, folder

Hi Laura,

It's my understanding that Windows 10 has a feature called, Fast Start, that
when your computer is off it's really not, but in a hybernation sleep mode
to allow the computer to download / install updates when you're not using
your computer. Below is a note on how to check your update status.

From: David Moore
Hi,
If you have win10 home, you cannot choose which updates you want to install
anymore. With win10 pro, you can still do this. All updates are done for you
in the background. If you want to check if you need updates, here is what
you do. Press windows+I to open the settings app. Press the right arrow
clear over to update and security and press enter. Now, tab once, and you
will hear check for updates usually, updates are ready to install, or
windows is checking for updates. If it says check for updates, turn on the
touch cursor if you are using JAWS. Left arrow once, and you will hear all
of the information about when your last updates were installed, and you will
hear your computer is up to date. You do not hear this information without
turning on the touch cursor on check for updates and arrowing left once. If
you hear that updates are ready to install, tab a few times and press enter
to install the updates. This is the short version that will work for you.
Take care, all.

Hello,

Using a Dell laptop, Windows 10 creator, and Jaws 18 ..

The last two times I turned my computer off I've had problems. When I turn
the computer back on I can't get Jaws to speak and have had to hold the
power button down to shut off the computer, wait a minute or so, and then
turn the computer back on. One of those times Jaws said that Windows
couldn't complete the update. I have left my computer on since yesterday
for fear of not being able to use it. My independence is totally reliant
upon this computer .. Being able to read my mail, pay my bills, etc. I live
alone and do not have sighted help readily available. Today, I was away
from the computer for a short bit and when I came back there was a message
that said "important Windows update notification" .. I pressed alt + F4 and
that went away.

How do I find where and what the notification is? I've never updated
anything without sighted help and am not sure quite what to do. Should I
just contact Microsoft disability or is this something I can take care of
myself without putting myself in a position to not be able to use the
computer? Any help and/or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Dennis,

On the desktop press, control + spacebar, to hear, not selected, to make
sure nothing is selected, open the context menu, now use the Sort By option
to move your icons around. I don't know if you can move / drag & drop icons
on the desktop being the desktop icons are controlled by the operating
system by the options in the context menu. These drag & drop steps are for
moving things like icons on the Taskbar or moving files from place to place.
Hopefully someone will have a better explanation than this 1 of mine.

2018-01-21 Thread Adrian Spratt
I've noticed no reply to Laura Richardson's question about how to handle
Windows update notifications. I'm sorry her message isn't included here. I
deleted it when I was cleaning out my "Delete" folder.

Laura, I don't have Windows 10, but this may get you started. With Windows 7,
the Windows update icon goes into the system tray, which I access with JAWS
key+F11. Arrow down to and click on that icon to start the process of
downloading and installing the updates.

There's more, but I'm pretty sure it's different from here with Windows 10, so
I hope others will follow up.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Win amp

2018-01-21 Thread JM Casey
Hey guys.

Windows 10 is a little different than previous oses when it comes to file
associations. You should do as much from windows as possible. The advice
below from Jim will work, except in this case, I don't think alt-f will give
you what you need. You should use the applications key to open the file's
context menu, or shift-f10. It's also possible to go into your windows
defaults and choose all the file types you want to associate with winamp.
You'll find this in settings. Winamp preferences no longer works perfectly
to set file associations. Essentially, the rule of thumb in Windows 10 seems
to be (from my observations of the past year or so): do it within Windows if
you want everything to work nicely. This includes making winamp playlists by
using the items in context menus from file explorer, rather than inside the
winamp playlist editor. I know it's a bit of an adjustment, but I keep
Winamp around, too, and still like it, and have found it's not as big of a
deal as I might have at first thought.

Hi. I recently acquired a used Toshiba laptop pc and upgraded it to Windows
10 home edition. I have Winamp installed on the pc, but every time I try to
play a file in Winamp, Groove Music wants to open the file. I have tried to
jog my memory so I can make Winamp the default player. I open preferences
with ctrl-p after launching Winamp, but for the life of me, I can't remember
how to make Winamp the default player despite the fact that I hear file
types open under the general preferences. I was so sure I would remember
how to make Winamp the default media player. Thank you.

Hi Dennis,

You're using the keystroke Control, Jaws key, + Jaws cursor / Numpad minus.
You should be using, Control, Jaws key, + Numpad slash.

Read the steps a little slower, they do work I've used them many times.

Hi Dennis,

Try one of the following:
Use the key strokes, (CTRL+INSERT+NUM PAD SLASH) for Drag and Drop .
This is used to drag items from one location and drop them in another.
Position the JAWS Cursor on the item you wish to move and press
CTRL+INSERT+NUM
PAD SLASH. You can leave the JAWS Cursor active, or you can switch to the PC
Cursor. JAWS will keep speaking as you navigate. Once you have positioned
the JAWS or PC Cursor in the location to which you would like to move the
item, press CTRL+INSERT+NUM PAD SLASH again, and the item will be moved to
the position of the active cursor.

Kevin,

As Dave posted, you can navigate with F6. However, to switch conveniently
between a list of messages and the list of folders, I use tab and shift-tab.
Shift-tab takes you from the message list to the folders list, while tab
does the reverse. Like F6, continuous tabbing rotates you through various
other branches of Outlook 2010 before returning you to where you began.

[JAWS-Users] Windows update notification question

2018-01-21 Thread Laura Richardson

Laura

Respected friends, I have red 5 emails regarding JAWS version confusion.
The matter of fact is that the latest version of JAWS 2018 is not on the
main page of freedomscientific’s main page.
For those of you who are saying that they are using the latest version of
JAWS 2018,
They should check if they are using JAWS 2018.1712.54 which was released on
January 4th 2018?
The latest version of JAWS 2018 which is available on the main page of
freedomscientific’s main page is JAWS 2018.1712.10 which was released on
December 12th 2017.
If you find out that you are using different version of JAWS 2018.1712.54
and if you are encountering the problem in using windows 10 mail app, then
do the following things.
1. Press INSERT+J to open the JAWS menu.
2. Select Help > About and press ENTER.
3. Navigate to “Special Update Code” and press ENTER.
4. Type in the following access code: 957395
5. Press Enter.
6. Navigate to the “OK” button and press ENTER.
7. Restart JAWS 2018.
8. Press INSERT+J to open the JAWS menu.
9. Select Help > Check for Updates.
10. When the “JAWS updates” dialog opens, press the SPACEBAR to select the
JAWS 2018.1712.54 update.
11. Navigate to the “Install” button and press ENTER to perform the update.
Remember one thing if you have repaired your JAWS 2018, then it will not
update and you will have to download the full version of JAWS 2018.1712.54.

JAWS 2018 is not considered an update to JAWS 18. It's starts all over, and
you need to install it separately from JAWS 18. You can do this with the
2018 disc or by updating from the VFO website. If you install from the CD,
you'll need to update the way you do with JAWS 18, except you'll use the
JAWS 2018 menu system, or else (again) by going to the website

Re: [JAWS-Users] how to drag and drop desktop icons

2018-01-21 Thread Mike B.

Hi,
you can drag them to another location using the Jaws cursor:
1. Move to the program's button that you want to move.
2. Press Insert + Numpad Minus to route the Jaws Cursor to the PC cursor,
and then press Insert + Numpad Slash to lock the left mouse button, in other
words, start holding it down.
3. Press Numpad Plus to switch back to using the PC cursor, and then press
either Left Arrow or Right Arrow the number of times which is the number of
positions which you want to move the program either to the left or right
respectively. This moves the PC cursor to the position where you want the
program to end up.
4. Press Insert + Numpad Minus to route the Jaws cursor to the PC cursor,
and press Insert + Numpad Slash to unlock the left mouse button, in other
words, stop holding it down.
5. Finally, press Numpad Plus to switch back to the PC cursor.
