Re: [JAWS-Users] victor reader
I do not believe you can transfer a book from the card to the internal memory. You can move a book from the internal memory to the SD Card. If you hit the 3 key quickly twice in a row, it will offer the option to move the book to the card. Confirm with the pound key as prompted. That has always worked for me. Re: [JAWS-Users] Making a keyboard shortcut for restarting JAWS
Hi Matthew, As other told you, JAWS keystroke to restart it in case of a crash in which JAWS processes are still loaded is JAWS+WINDOWS+F4. However, I suspect that your problem may be related to the audio playback device. You said that you connect a radio station or similar when JAWS speech feedback goes out, so I suggest to check in the Utilities menu of JAWS's window (INSERT+J, then ALT+U) which sound card is selected in the Sound Cards sub menu to route JAWS speech output. As an example, I have an old micro-component which can be connected via USB to get computer audio there. The problem is that most recent drivers available are not fully compatible in Windows versions newer than XP and not supported at all on any 64-bit Windows version. Since I have to simulate a driver update from witting Device manager each time I connect the micro-component because generic USB Composite Device as installed by Windows doesn't work with it but even so the main audio controller appears to be working properly, I had to configure JAWS to always send speech output to the computer's built-in speakers regardless of the Windows default playback device set in Sounds Control Panel applet. If I don't configure JAWS in this way, I lost speech until I manage to simulate the driver update, configure JAWS to send the output to the computer's built-in speaker or unplug the micro-component. Re: [JAWS-Users] Making a keyboard shortcut for restarting JAWS
Correction. Where I wrote "preferences," I meant "properties." As others have since explained, to create a shortcut for loading JAWS, place focus on the desktop icon for the JAWS version you're using, then press alt-enter to open properties, then tab two or three times. If you want your shortcut to be control-alt-8, for example, simply press 8 in the edit field of that dialog. Then tab to and press spacebar on the Okay button. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Adrian Spratt Sent: Saturday, February 24, 2018 4:18 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Making a keyboard shortcut for restarting JAWS Hi, Matthew. The keystroke I use for this purpose is JAWS key-Windows key-F4, all three at the same time. You'll need to wait several seconds for JAWS to come up, but it almost invariably does. An alternative is to unload JAWS with the same combination minus the Windows key. In that case, you then need to reload JAWS in whichever way you're accustomed to, such as with a shortcut you created from the preferences dialog. If this needs further explanation, please post again. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Matthew Chao Sent: Saturday, February 24, 2018 2:21 PM To: JAWS-Users-List@jaws-users.com Subject: [JAWS-Users] Making a keyboard shortcut for restarting JAWS Hi, Folks. Re: [JAWS-Users] migrating to a different web browser
Adrian, I most definitely agree with you that the number of combinations we have to go through sometimes to get the results we need can be very frustrating, especially when it is necessary to get something done quickly. As you brought up, I had forgotten the need to sometimes go back to prior versions of JAWS to get something done. There is a website I need to go to weekly to fill out my timesheet, and it has a checkbox which needs to be checked that JAWS 18 does not seem to recognize. I have to load JAWS 17 in order to be able to check this box. Having to have all of these tools gets kind of crazy, but seems to be necessary these days. Pam From: JAWS-Users-List [jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] on behalf of Adrian Spratt [adr...@adrianspratt.com] Sent: Friday, February 23, 2018 5:03 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] migrating to a different web browser I agree that it's necessary to have all three browsers installed, but this increasing complexity is a little nuts. People are suggesting that we should also have the two screenreaders, JAWS and NVDA, on board, which I do. But that means we may need to try six combinations before we can access certain websites. Then there's the question of which version of JAWS will work. To give an example, a certain website I use is accessible to IE11, but it moves painfully slowly after the log-in page. Chrome gets to this page right away, but later there's a critical page on this same website that Chrome can't even open. For a while, I was trying to access this website with Firefox, but Firefox couldn't locate the edit fields for the username and password fields, and so obviously I couldn't log in. Then, on a whim, I switched from JAWS 2018 and 18, which I already need to alternate between, to JAWS 17. Lo and behold, the edit fields appeared. After that, Firefox and JAWS 17 seem to move seamlessly through the entire website. This is a website that requires logging in to test, which is why I'm not posting the address. The amount of time and distraction involved for screenreader users in working on the Web lately is getting ludicrous. Maybe VFO's efforts to work with MS on Edge will bring us back to a single universal browser. Until then, the lives of screenreader users are complicated. My ambition is to work as fast on a computer as fast as a non-techy sighted user, but all this browser/screenreader/version number switching is an obstacle to fast, distraction-free browsing. I can't imagine what it's like for a new screenreader user. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Andy Baracco Sent: Friday, February 23, 2018 4:23 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] migrating to a different web browser I use Chrome and IE 11 but have suspended using Firefox until accessibility issues are cleared up. [JAWS-Users] quick excel query
hey Jaws Users: I’m using Jaws 2018 at work, and we use an excel sheet that i use control+page up twice to get to the main sheet I call it. Then I go to the top and find the box that I have to enter a six digit number to access the information I need to get. Pressing alt+down on this cell allows me to enter or paste the number and tap return. Then, I am shown information that gives me a summery of information regarding pricing and notes for the center i’m helping a family with, however if i rout the jaws curser to the PC curser, then press control+right and then back by pressing control+left, then insert+8 twice quickly for a jaws left click, I can expand the data and access the detailed information. The only way I figured this out is a colleague of mine told me that she would double-click on the road that the summary of the data I need was on whenever I asked her to expand the data. The problem is I have to go through this process every Monday morning, as we get new data every Friday. And I'll continue doing this, since it's working but if there's an easier way with the keystroke I can use, I'd love some feedback. Re: [JAWS-Users] Making a keyboard shortcut for restarting JAWS
I just go into the Jaws desktop properties icon and punch in a number in the shortcut prompt (which is automatically added to the control+alt sequence) and continue to tab to the OK button. I prefer to use the version number over the simple control+alt+J command since I usually end up with more than one version of Jaws on my system eventually. Control+alt+7 for JFW 17. Control+alt+8 for Jaws 18 and now for version 2018, I just chose control+alt+2 and will likely go to control+alt+9 when Jaws 2019 comes out later this year. You just have to redo this shortcut after installing every Jaws update which is easy enough. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Matthew Chao Sent: Saturday, February 24, 2018 11:21 AM To: JAWS-Users-List@jaws-users.com Subject: [JAWS-Users] Making a keyboard shortcut for restarting JAWS Hi, Folks. Re: [JAWS-Users] Making a keyboard shortcut for restarting JAWS
Just a tip, guys. You can hit alt-enter on any file, including a desktop shortcut, to see and edit its properties, instead of going through the context menu. Doesn't save a lot of time or anything, but it's handy to know these things. There sure are a lot of windows keyboard commands. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Tom Behler Sent: February 24, 2018 4:44 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Making a keyboard shortcut for restarting JAWS Matt: We typically use the shortcut command Alt Control J. Re: [JAWS-Users] Making a keyboard shortcut for restarting JAWS
Hello Matthew, You have to make a keyboard shortcut, since JAWS lets you have multiple versions of the program, rather than installing over the previous version as Window-Eyes did. I use control-alt-j for the current version and control-alt-z for the older one. Just my choice. To make a shortcut, do it the way you would for any other program. Find the program shortcut on your desktop and press the context menu key. Arrow up to properties and press enter. Tab until you hear shortcut key hotkey. Press j, or whatever letter you want to use. The control-alt goes in automatically. Tab to ok. And follow the prompts. This will have to be done with every JAWS update. HTH. Re: [JAWS-Users] Making a keyboard shortcut for restarting JAWS
You can create one yourself to start JAWS, from the desktop. But it sounds like what you want is something a little different. When you create a keyboard shortcut in this way, it starts jAWS, assuming it's currently unloaded. But it sounds like what Matthew is describing is some kind of crash where JAWS is still loaded but needs to be restarted. In that case, I guess jAWS key + windows key + f4 will do the trick. The JAWS key will be either numpad insert or caps lock, depending on whether you are using desktop or laptop layout. This combination will literally re-start jAWS (so it won't work if JAWS is not loaded). If what you want is a desktop keyboard shortcut to load JAWS, go to the JAWS icon located there (on the desktop). Hit alt-enter for its properties. Make sure you are on the shortcut tab. Enter the key combination in the area you tab to. Click ok. Click "continue as administrator" if necessary. And tha'ts it. Note that every time there is a jAWS update, your keyboard shortcut will disappear. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of David Pearson Sent: February 24, 2018 4:23 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Making a keyboard shortcut for restarting JAWS I was wondering the same thing. Re: [JAWS-Users] migrating to a different web browser
For sure, some of them are going to go the way of the dodo. We've already seen that with Window Eyes. I think the answer to the question with regards to JAWS though lies in the acronym...Job Access with Speech. I don't know how things are in Europe and other parts of the world, but in Canada and the uS, most corporate organisations, and governments, are going to invest in JAWS. They have a distrust of open-source software because they feel that, rather than having its code available being a potential benefit to all, it's a security risk. It's an ongoing debate. Of course when you download NVDA (and other open-source software, like, well, Mozilla Firefox I think), you should get it from a proper source, and not some random website or person. But I suppose a deep study of a program's code could potentially lead to someone finding a backdoor somewhere. The thing is, this happens with expensive, commercial software all the time, too, and I think it's even possible to decompile software, though such a thing is way beyond my technical knowledge. Anyway, for now, JAWS still seems to have better support for MS Office, so that would probably also be something considered by the professional sectors. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Maria Campbell Sent: February 24, 2018 3:28 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] migrating to a different web browser I'm wondering how VFO and other payed screen readers are planning to keep customers, considering the usability and no cost status of NVDA. Re: [JAWS-Users] Accessible app for .dat files?
You're right, there is no media player specifically bundled in Windows 10. As I recall, when you set up Windows 10, you are given the choice of various default programs. Microsoft suggests the Groove music player, but you can choose any other media player including Windows Media Player. The .dat file is a data file, as J.M. suggests, and is intended to be opened by the program that created it. Many programs can open .dat files for their own purposes; Windows stores .dat files in the Registry; CCleaner, Recuva, Speccy are some system utilities that create .dat files; as do some different games like Mindcraft, SimCity, etc. WinMail, the native mail app in Windows 10 also creates .dat files and uses them when a recipient's email doesn't support .rtf messages. Finally, Video information on CD and DVD disks have .dat files. Those are the main category associations, there are others that are created, such as governmental forms generated through the Department of State that I'm aware of. Mitch, I do agree, at age 64 now I simply don't have the patience anymore for all this back and forth. Mitch Sent from Mail for Windows 10 From: JM Casey Sent: Friday, February 23, 2018 4:53 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] migrating to a different web browser I hear you; sometimes I definitely feel the same. The fact that, between, for example, VFO and Microsoft, half the time when there's some kind of update you are crossing your fingers hoping something won't be broken afterwards, is pretty maddening. The reply above yours from David there says "voiceover on the mac". At first I kind of scoffed at that. I'm not a mac user and probably never will be. But here's the thing. As PC users, I think we are given a variety of options and tools, and that's one of the great things about being a PC users. I used to access the web through Telnet and a linux shell. The only browser that would work was lynx and it couldn't display framed webpages properly. It was a really frustrating experience back then, for sure. Then, finally, we had Internet Explorer and netscape. Then, internet Explorer, Firefox, and Chrome. I think the idea of the web being an entirely universal experience is a nice dream, but still a dream. All you can do is try to make it as close to a universal experience as you can. That's actually harder and harder now with the number of connected devices out there. Often, it's Microsoft that won't play along. I think we'll probably see more and more people using Chrome, and that's probably a good thing. Just today I had to get it up and running again and it was nice to be reminded how fast and robust it really is. Are things complex? Yeah, definitely. But these browsers aren't so different from one another that we can't adapt. We just have to know what tool is appropriate for each job. If you're a carpenter, you probably won't get very far with just a single saw in your arsenal, you know? And rest assured, even though screen-readers do add a certain amount of complexity to things, sighted people have to deal with this too. Let's be glad we aren't system administrators (although maybe you are? I don't know)that opens a whole new can o' worms, when you've got a network of computers, all running different software and hardware, and your company expects you to get them all to play nice with each other. Now maybe it's just because I have more time on my hands this year than I used to, but 90% of the time, I enjoy the challenge and adding new tools to the arsenal, so to speak. The only thing that's really making me nervous sometimes is Windows 10 updating and screwing around with my settings and things. *grins* -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Adrian Spratt Sent: February 23, 2018 5:03 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] migrating to a different web browser I agree that it's necessary to have all three browsers installed, but this increasing complexity is a little nuts. Until then, the lives of screenreader users are com
Re: [JAWS-Users] migrating to a different web browser
Alt-b is the quickest way to access your bookmarks. You can add bookmarks from there, or subscribe to feeds. Somewhat less conveniently, you can not edit bookmarks from here. To do that, use ctrl-I, as you would in IE. A tree view will open that will give more control over your bookmarks. It's a toggle, so ctrl-I again will close it. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Brian Zolo Sent: February 23, 2018 7:19 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] migrating to a different web browser Good evening, I'm brian Zolo here from Gahanna, Ohio. My primary browser is Firefox and has been for the last few years. I also have Chrome on this machine and have used it a little. They both work well, but I'd still give the edge (hah) to Firefox. I think Chrome support has gotten really good in JAWS 2018, latest build. I do not have this. The Firefox interface is a little more like that of iE, so you would probably find that switch simpler. Re: [JAWS-Users] Latest Jaws and IE 11
You have to find the Firefox ESWR which is there Extended Release version intended for business deployment, which doesn't get the constant updates the regular version gets. You can find info about it here https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/switch-to-firefox-extended-support-release-esr Be advised, that if you have installed a higher version than 52, you will want to manually save your bookmarks, home pages and history if you use the same profile to install the ESWR version; or you would need to create a new profile. Still, it makes sense to accustom oneself to moving away from IE. I know it has some decent features, but it's increasingly ineffective and unusable on some websites. I don't know when security updates for it will stop .. probably not til 2020 as that's when Windows 7 support ends ... but still. Firefox 52 ESR is currently the thing to get if you are wanting to use FF and JAWS. It works without any issues. There has been some difficulty in adapting JAWS to Firefox Quantum, but they are working on it. You could also use NVDA. Re: [JAWS-Users] Accessible app for .dat files?
Hm, I looked up Power media Player. It's made by Cyberlink but available in the Windows 10 app store. It's not bundled with Windows 10 by default. I certainly don't have it. Are you sure what you are trying to play is a media file? A .dat extension is just a generic extension for a data file. It's usually something used by a program and not generally something that user would get much from by opening on his own.
