Hi Adrian and all,

The key for PC cursor in Laptop layout is CAPSLOCK+SEMICOLON.

Hope it helps!

To get out of a text/form field, press the PC cursor key. Then press b to reach
the next button, which will probably be "submit."
I realize you're using a laptop and probably so the JAWS laptop keyboard. I
don't know what the PC cursor key is in that case. On the desktop keyboard,
it's that long one on the right side of the numpad.

What about if you are in a text field? Is there a way of navigating to the
nearest button from a text field? Called pressing a skate get you out of form
is mode so that you can then press before button?

Re: [JAWS-Users] Need advice on a missing module

2018-03-13 Thread joseph.lee22590
Hi,
Hmmm, and is JAWS functional? Have you tried System Restore to see if it
fixes it for a while?
As for why I asked for Windows 10 release version: when people say they've
got Windows 10, some of us (including I) go into a "panic mode" where we
need to ask which release of Windows 10 one is using due to massive
differences between releases. In case of the info below, Tim is using
Version 1709.
Cheers,
Joseph

Timothy,

On your "P.S." query, I'm guessing the answer is to place focus in the
dialog, then press JAWS key+alt+w to virtualize the window. Then press
control-a to select all, then control-c to copy. As I think you realize,
after that you press control-v to paste the copy into the message. Of
course, once you've copied the text, you could also paste into a word
processing file and edit it.
I hope this is responsive to this part of your query.

Another thing my girls would do is forget to un-mute the sound card, or turn

This happens a lot at my job. The sighties around there are pretty

I always tell sighted people who want to use the computer that they should
turn off JAWS. It slows down the system and without making changes to web
settings I have no desire to make, makes it difficult for sighted people
to

interact normally with web browsers. However, I guess I understand in this
case, that you might not feel comfortable with not knowing exactly what
these sighted people are doing on your system.

Andy, I had the same problem with my sighted daughters with turning JAWS

when they got on the computer. My fix was simple and to the point.
I told them, if they turn off JAWS, then they can not use the computer.
it worked. They would only use it for schoolwork and nothing else.

Hey all

My girlfriend an di are both blind and her daughter likes to visit sites

Is there a program out there that would be a tattle tell?

A program that would allow for us to go back and retrace her steps?

Something that she wouldn't be able to see because she does go in and
turn
off things. She turns off the voice when she doesn't want her mom to know
what she is doing.

Looking for something that also blind friendly.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

Hi.
I didn't see any other "critical" messages. Maybe I just missed them. I
wasn't criticising her though, merely pointing out that a good many people
would, for better or worse, not be receptive to this, because of their
settings if nothing else, and that it might be a lot of trouble to go
through for no result. It's a nice thought, and I would happily open a link
to an mp3 from someone I trusted, at least.

I have the tune in an mp3 format.

Is there any way to do this?

Thanks!

Even if you do all this, it's not guaranteed to work for the recipient.
Many
people, especially those using older e-mail software, will not view
messages

in html. I personally would not want something to start playing out of my
speakers when I opened an e-mail message. That, plus the space
restrictions

involved in sending e-mail, make me think it'd be much simpler and more
practical merely to provide a link to the mp3 in your message.

Depending on which email program you use, you can do that, but if you want
it to open when the email is opened, then you have to make that segment of
your song a .wav file extension.

Once you convert that, you may need to edit down to a size that is less
than

one MB.

Since you are using Outlook from Office 2010 as your email client, do the
following:

Use MsWord as your editor to create an email message. In your office
program go
to Tools, Options, Mail tab; mail format.
On that tab, set your message format to HTML, plain-text won't work.
Hit Apply, and OK to Exit the options area.

Now, create a new message. A dialog will pop up that Word is starting
your

email editor. There will be the typical email fields, (I don't know how
well
Jaws will read them -- I haven't tried this in my Office MsWord 2010
version.)

You will need a Web Tools toolbar, which you can make visible by hitting
View,
Toolbars, and finding the Web Tools option.

It will pop-up a small window with various icons. One of them is the
"Sound"
icon, you may need to simulate a mouseclick on it; it will then pop-up the
background sound option.

You can then hit the Browse button and browse to your St. Patrick's Day
file. I
said above that it needs to be in .wav format, but in looking around, it
also
supports .mid, .midi, .au, .rmi, .aif and .aiff.
Many people recommend using .midi.

After you press open on the sound file, you can then choose how many times
you
want that message sound to play -- from one to five times, or to infinite
which
means it will play until the message is closed.

I haven't looked at your previous messages, but if you are having internet
connection issues, I'll lay dollars to doughnuts that you are using Windows
7.

There are glitches in the Windows 7 with many wifi cards which sometimes
cause them not to connect, particularly to secured WPA networks.

I've dealt with this problem fairly often on my Win 7 PC.

If this might be your issue, send a message back, and I'll respond privately

Hello,
If you want to use twitter from the web I would recommend using EasyChirp. It
is an accessible online interface to twitter. It can be found at:

However most people use a twitter client on either their phone or PC to access
it. There is Chicken Nugget, which is a paid client, and there is TWBlue which
is free.

Hi John. I've been away from the list for a few days, but thought I'd way in
with my thoughts on upgrading.

I have worked with blind clients for many years now, and this topic comes up
everytime there is an upgrade, First, remember, if you upgrade, and there are
problems with the new version for whatever reason, you can always revert back,
and eventually the issues will be ironed out. What I tell my clients is,
consider owning a computer like owning a vehicle. There has to be some expected
maintenance costs, and if you can afford it, it's a good idea to keep up on
those things. What if you skip 2018, but something comes out
in2019 that you simply can't live without, then you are behind another version
and it will cost you more to upgrade at this point. I know some folks simply
can't afford it, but my feeling has been, if you can, and if you are planning
to stick with jaws, it is prudent to keep up with the updates.

Hi group,

I am now using Jaws 18 in its latest configuration. I just priced out the
upgrade to Jaws 2018 and it will cost me $400 including the SMA. Before I make
that kind of investment, I'd appreciate it if someone would tell me
whether Jaws 2018 is worth the investment. I'm happy with jaws 18. I
would have no objection to upgrading if someone can give me good reasons for
that change. I have been studying the messages on our list and to tell you the
truth, what I'm hearing is somewhat discouraging. Many people are having
issues with 2018. However, I'd be willing to bet that the same thing happened
when Jaws 18 was introduced. There is always a time where people
have to adjust to new technology or software.

Re: [JAWS-Users] WLM and Comcast

2018-03-13 Thread net bat66

are you useing i map or pop 3 settings for wlm?
if i map there server might be intermitant.
i have had connection problems when comcast is upgradeing there equipment. but
they usually notify me when they are doing this.

does this happen when surfing the net with i e or firefox?
are you useing a wired, router?
if so try re seating the data cables from the cable modem and the computer.
i have had these connection problems before.
i just replace these cables because they build up corrosion over the years and
reseating them only works for a few days before they stop makeing connection
again.

Morning folks.
I am having a problem with WLM and comcast. Whenever I try to open or delete a
message from my inbox, I get the following message:

imap.comcast.net was not found.
Does anyone else have the same problem, and if so, can you offer a solution? I
am using WLM 16.4, Jaws 2018 and Windows 10 on a dell laptop.

Thanks.

The problem is in the fact that the issue (whatever it is) seems to come and
go at inconsistent intervals. Plus, I cannot seem to connect to our home

Hi.
I think you should call your service provider. They can walk you through
manually configuring your e-mail account. Server not found means you aren't
actually connecting to the imap server, where your mail is stored. Again,
they should help you with this.

Ok. Yes, I realised that I deleted some of the replies to his message.
Sometimes reading your messages newest-to-oldest is not the best strategy.

I'd still call them though. I don't really know much about WLM, but Outlook
usually connects automatically to imap servers, given that you already have
an account.

Re: [JAWS-Users] WHY UPGRADE TO 2018?

2018-03-13 Thread chris judge
Hi John. I've been away from the list for a few days, but thought I'd way in
with my thoughts on upgrading.

I have worked with blind clients for many years now, and this topic comes up
everytime there is an upgrade, First, remember, if you upgrade, and there
are problems with the new version for whatever reason, you can always revert
back, and eventually the issues will be ironed out. What I tell my clients
is, consider owning a computer like owning a vehicle. There has to be some
expected maintenance costs, and if you can afford it, it's a good idea to
keep up on those things. What if you skip 2018, but something comes out
in2019 that you simply can't live without, then you are behind another
version and it will cost you more to upgrade at this point. I know some
folks simply can't afford it, but my feeling has been, if you can, and if
you are planning to stick with jaws, it is prudent to keep up with the
updates.

Hi group,

I am now using Jaws 18 in its latest configuration. I just priced out the
upgrade to Jaws 2018 and it will cost me $400 including the SMA. Before I
make that kind of investment, I'd appreciate it if someone would tell me
whether Jaws 2018 is worth the investment. I'm happy with jaws 18. I
would have no objection to upgrading if someone can give me good reasons for
that change. I have been studying the messages on our list and to tell you
the truth, what I'm hearing is somewhat discouraging. Many people are
having issues with 2018. However, I'd be willing to bet that the same thing
happened when Jaws 18 was introduced. There is always a time where people
have to adjust to new technology or software.

Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS freezing when switching between programs

2018-03-13 Thread Mike Mote
Hi John! I appreciate your respone to this question, along with the others
who have chimed in as well. I do believe it is a resource issue, and
probably could be fixed by someone who is a programmer, and knows their way
around the Windows Registry. I know that we strongly encourage more RAM for
users of Assistive technology products here at work. However, more RAM is
not a cure all for these types of issues.

Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS freezing when switching between programs

Hello Mike,
John Justice, here.
I work for the state and use configurations which are similar to the ones
you describe.

In the interest of correcting the problem, I brought it to the attention of
our upper level Access group. Their explanation doesn't solve any issues
but it might give you food for thought.

 1. THE ISSUE AT HAND: apparently, what we are experiencing is the
assignment of RAM. Current versions of Jaws tend to utilize a considerable
amount of RAM, especially when changing from one software environment to
another. The result is that the system has to {wait} for enough RAM to
perform the function.
2. PROGRAM PRIORITY ASSIGNMENT: It is possible to assign certain programs
on a PC so that they have a priority when RAM is distributed. This is way
beyond my pay grade Mike but apparently, within reason, certain programs can
be allowed to operate at the expense of others, at least temporarily. There
are exceptions to this rule and certain pieces of software are assigned a
permanent top priority. I imagine that the Windows operating system might
have that kind of assignment.
3. According to our A. T. department, reassignment involves the division of
RAM into smaller compartments which then handle this function. The entire
process scares the heck out of me. It isn't something I'd want to attempt.
There might be someone on our list with more technological knowledge than I
have.
4. A WORKING SOLUTION: I am now operating two computers simultaneously.
One is dedicated to some of the functions I need while the second unit
handles primary functions. For example, I use the secondary unit to load
and display Excel spreadsheets. But even with that arrangement, certain
pieces of software will temporarily shut down Jaws until they are fully
loaded. The down time has been measured and it is usually approximately32
seconds.
5. CREATING HOTKEYS FOR RELOADING JAWS: Finally, we have established
hotkeys which can be used to encourage Jaws to restart. Occasionally,
though rarely, Jaws wil not restart after one of these incidents. We use
three key combinations which are dedicated to reactivating Jaws.

The entire thing is frustrating to say the least, Mike. But it's something
we just put up with since jaws performs so well in most other respects.

Good morning all! I'm trying to help with one of our employees here at work
on an issue where JAWS freezes unexpectedly when switching from one window
to another using the Alt Tab key. The issue is difficult to resolve because
it doesn't happen every time he switches windows. It does happen two to
three times a day on average, and is hindering his efforts to perform his
job. I have offered several solutions, but nothing has worked yet. When
JAWS freezes, he has to wait some 30 seconds before speech comes back.

I wanted to reach out to the list to see if any of you had any ideas as to
how I could minimize this behavior. I would appreciate any feedback.
Thanks very much!
