Re: [JAWS-Users] Best program for reading PDFs
Hi, Sharon, Brian Zolo here in Columbus, Ohio. You can read that document with jaws. Here are the instructions: 1. First hit insert plus your space bar. 2. Then hit the letter o and you will hear jaws say ocr. 3. Then hit the letter d which will tell jaws that this is a document. You will then hear jaws say ocr started. Once jaws completes the ocr scan, it will start reading the document to you. Let me know if you need further assistance and I'll be glad to help you out. This definitely is an awesome feature of jaws 2018. When I tried to open it straight from the email it opened in edge and I couldn't read anything. After I saved it to a folder in my documents and went to open it I got a list of programs I could use to open it but all I tried couldn't display the document. I tried opening it in notepad and got a lot of rubbish instead of what it was meant to be. So now I am wondering what the best program to use with Jaws 2018 and windows 10 is and where can I get it from? I've been having trouble making the person on the other end understand what format I need because the first time she sent it to me it was a picture which of course Jaws couldn't read so I asked her to send it again in a word file. She then sent me a screen shot of the document so again I had to explain that jaws doesn't read pictures and asked again for a word version. She is working on an iPad so she didn't have access to word so she finally sent me the PDF version. I'm afraid that this too will be a picture rather than an actual PDF but to find this out I need a program that will open it. Thanks for any help. >From Shaz. Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS sma question
Good afternoon, Russ, Brian Zolo here in Columbus, Ohio feel free to call me BZ, grin! My wife and I just upgraded from jaws 18 to jaws 2018 and we did it through the jaws home use program. It only cost us $200and we went through Hal Knight with vfo-group sales. Hal can be reached at 1-800-444-4443 and select extension 1101. Hal was great to work with and got us set up with the home use program. He'll look up your jaws serial numbers for your products. He'll ask you to verify your serial numbers but he certainly does an excellent job. VFO-group needs to publicize this program more as I had heard about it but they don't say much about it on their site. I had asked Eric Damery as it would have cost us much more to upgrade our products and then buy an SMA and that's when Eric got us in touch with Hal Knight concerning the home use program. Don't hesitate to let Hal know that I referred you to him. Hope that this information will help you out. Let me know how things go. Re: [JAWS-Users] Accessible free anti virus
Hey there, Dennis be mighty careful as eset has made claims that they're accessible with jaws. The reason that I caution you is that the last totally accessible version of eset that was fully accessible was version 8. I can't speak for their current version but when I tried version9 which was claimed to be accessible it just totally wasn't accessible. I was never able to change any settings. I brought this to eset's attention and opened a ticket and was finally told that it would be considered by development but then never heard any updates. There had been some traffic that the newest version was accessible if you turned off gaming mode but I haven't tested it. Frankly, I'd check out the viper products either total security or viper antivirus. That's my two cents worth, grin! Re: [JAWS-Users] Bit Locker
Hi, Michelle, Brian Zolo here in Columbus, Ohio. Bitlocker is definitely a pain as I have to use it as I am an employee of the department of defense. The only way that I cope with it is to count to twenty once the computer starts and then put in my pin number. I do have a braille display so once I know that the computer has started which I can tell as my braille display will give its manufacturer name and nodel when windows first starts and that's when I then start counting. Once I put in my pin number and wait several seconds, the computer then will give the windows start sound if it doesn't, I then have to backspace 7 times to re-enter my pin number and then again press enter and then the computer usually starts up. It certainly is frustrating and we've even checked with Microsoft to see if there's a solution. They advise that there isn't one at this point. Your employer could putyou in a special security group and disable bitlocker but the department of defense has a rule that any laptop that is sued for telework must be encrypted so that's why we have to use bitlocker. We used to use a product called safenet and there was a registry tweak with that program whereby we would hear a tone and series of beeps which was our auditory indication for entering the pin number. Once you'd hit enter, you'd then get another series of tones to let you know that you pin had been entered correctly. There was another set to indicate that you hadn't put in the correct number. I hope that this will help as I definitely know how frustrating it is when there's nobody sighted who can assist you. Let me know if I can be of further assistance. Re: [JAWS-Users] Microphone for using Cortana
Hi, David, Brian Zolo here in Gahanna, Ohio. I'm looking for a good usb headset or a good Bluetooth headset. I'm a skype user and need a better quality headset microphone than the one in this Logitech h540 headset. I'd love to go wireless either Bluetooth or a good usb wireless headset. Any suggestions will be welcome! Have a great weekend! I use Cortana a lot, and I use one of three microphones. I use a USB head set that has a built-in microphone, and Cortana hears me great with that. I have a Blue Tooth Head set with built-in microphone, and Cortana hears that one great as well. Third, I use my built in microphone that came on my laptop, and that works great as well. Cortana is great at understanding you. Just press: Windows+C and you will hear a sound, and ask her about anything, and you will get an answer, or you will get a web page of great search results to read with your screen reader. Re: [JAWS-Users] New Computer Not Playing Well with JAWS18
Good afternoon, Annette, Brian Zolo here in Columbus, Ohio. Another thing that may cause this is sound drivers. I've got an dell optoplex desktop at work where jaws sounds get cut off. It's intermittent but it's mighty annoying when it does happen. If you need assistance in getting the correct sound drivers, I'll be happy to assist you. The nice thing with dell machines is that once you have your serial number you can go to support.dell.com and get the right drivers that you need for your machine. Let me know if I can assist you further. Have a blessed day! Turning off special effects in sound settings will definitely help but it's more a matter of sound card drivers. That's definitely one aspect of windows ten that is a pain, grin! JAWS18 latest build is installed on the new laptop which is a Dell 5480 running Windows10. The JAWS volume is jumping all over the place and what JAWS is saying is being clipped off. Here is what I've attempted so far without a fix. Called FS who told me that I had to turn off the special sound effects. Since she did not know how to do this, she recommended that I call Microsoft Disability support. All that the Microsoft support person wanted to do was turn off all sounds. My husband and I have poked around in the various sound settings and cannot find anything. I called back to FS and they had me run a JAWS repair. There was no improvement. I called back to FS yet again, and was told that while she's heard of the problem she has no idea on how to fix it. She did tell me that I need to find sound enhancements for the sound card and figure out which ones to turn off. If anyone can direct me in the right direction, I would really appreciate it. POP3 is Post Office Protocol, wherein you actually download your messages from the server to your computer. IMAP is newer, in it you download only the headers, your message remains at the server. SMTP or Simple Mail Transfer Protocol is what sends your messages out to your mail server, which in turn forwards to the next server in the chain and so on to however many are necessary until it reaches the recipient's server, where it awaits access by te recipient, either Online, with POP3 or with IMAP. [JAWS-Users] Assistance with logitech h540 headset
Good morning, folks Brian Zolo here in Gahanna, Ohio. I just purchased a Logitech h540 headset and it's working fairly well but have two questions. 1. I've made the Logitech h540 headset the default sound device but when I go to bbc world service, the sound comes out my laptop speakers. The other issue I'm having concerns the microphone. Right now, I'm having to use the microphone the internal microphone on the laptop as when I've attempted to use the headset microphone, I'm just not ketting good microphone quality. We're having issues as we're in a hotel right now using Verizon mifi and we're just not getting good signal which is creating problems. Any suggestions on how to address these audio issues will be greatly appreciated. The audio quality for listening is great but the microphone seems to be the weak link in the headset. Any assistance will be greatly appreciated. I'm on skype, my skype id is brianzo1. Have a great day! [JAWS-Users] Proboem with outlook 2013 and jaws 18 on windows ten
Good afternoon, folks, Brian Zolo here from Gahanna, Ohio. I'm using jaws 18 on windows ten at work in conjunction with outlook 2013 and one disconcerting thing I've noticed is that when trying to add a mailbox, jaws no longer says the mailbox names when you're doing a search like it did in earlier versions of outlook and previous versions of windows. Now, jaws just says not selected. Another thing I'm noticing is that jaws is no longer speaking the various tabs when you're in outlook options. Sure would appreciate finding out whether others have experienced this and what remedial action you've taken to resolve this issue. [JAWS-Users] Update on playing dvd's
Good evening, listers, Brian Zolo here in Gahanna, Ohio. Just wanted to give you an update on my adventure with playing dvd's. I did check in device manager and did set my dvd drive to the U.S. region for dvd's and then again attempted to play the new dvd I got of the movie Lincoln. When I inserted my dvd, I was presented with a menus asking me whether I wanted to play the dvd using power dvd or vlc media player which I do have installed. I chose vlc media player and the introductory music started playing and once I hit enter the movie did play successfully. There are keyboard shortcuts that can be used for vlc media player so I'll do further exploring of this application but also wanted to get your thoughts with regard to an application that I tried several years ago called dvd audio extractor. I see from the dvd audio extractor web site that blue ray discs are now supported and I have considering getting an external usb blueray drive. Any suggestions as to good blueray drives to get? I'm really enjoying the list and appreciate your patience with a rookie when it comes to playing dvd's, grin! I've received some great dvd's in the last few years but haven't felt very confident as I wanted to find accessible software so that K can enjoy them to the fullest. Have a great week! bZ! I chose play with power dvd and the dvd started playing but it constantly keeps going back to playing the music at the beginning of the movie. I ejected the dvd but wondered what the keyboard shortcuts are in power dvd or whether there are more navigable solutions ou there to playing dvd's. I do have vlc media player but I haven't installed it yet. I confess that I'm new to handling dvd's as I do have lots of dvd's with old western tv series that I'd love to be able to play but have been hesitant because I wanted the best and accessible player to play dvd's. Hey there, Scorpio, I'll definitely give your suggestion a try1 Thanks so much! I'm not sure if this started in Windows 7 or not, but in Windows 8.1 and 10, each application has individual volume controls that you can minimize or maximize to your preference. If you have an application with a loud opening track of work and you can hear Jaws, you can actually lower the volume for that particular application until you are able to hear Jaws again. You'll have to go to the icon on your system tray, press your applications key or shift+F10, or, using Jaws utility, press insert+F11 to go to the list of system tray applications, arrow to the volume icon, then tab to the right single click button and press the spacebar. This will bring up a context menu, at which point, you can just arrow down to "Open Volume Mixer..." and press enter to activate it. When the volume mixer opens, tab several times until you reach the section for the Winamp volume, and make sure it maximized. One thing you might try before the above step, just to rule out a Winamp or Jaws problem, is to make sure that you have the Winamp volume set to 100% using the Jaws hotkeys of control+alt+slash, beside your period key just below your semi-colon. This will make sure that this is not a Jaws bug of some kind and will raise your volume control properly. Hope this helps. Winamp will play the file as you can tell that the file is playing when you use the jump to time command control plus j. The problem is we can't get any sound. I've uninstalled winamp gotten it out of program files x86 as well as application data and then have reinstalled it but still can't get any sound. I've switched the sound sources from Microsoft mapper and also changed plugins from direct sound to wave out and vise versa and it still doesn't change things the file is playing but with no sound. Good morning folks. I'm Brian Zolo and I'm located in Gahanna, Ohio, feel free to call me BZ, grin! I'm having a issue with windows ten at work with the department of Defense. When I was on windows 7, I use use the jaws cursor to navigate to the list of classifications that come up as part of the e-mail markings validator application that comes up when sending an e-mail message on the classified side. I could then route the pc cursor to the jaws cursor and then up and down arrow to the desired classification and then tab to the list of countries and check the desired checkbox, etc. Now, in wndows ten, when I attempt to use the jaws cursor, it just says blank. I now am not able to send out e-mail messages on the classified side until I can get this matter resolved. E-mail messages are essential as part of my job as I work extensively with our coalition partners in problem resolution. I've heard frequent reference to using the touch cursor in windows ten applications; can someone point me to good instructions in using the touch cursor when navigating with the jaws cursor doesn't work? I think this is related to how newer applications build their graphical interfaces. You really need to use the touch cursor for these.
