I'm using Windows 10 and JAWS 18. I recently switched back to the Eloquence synth more-or-less full-time after using Vocalizer for a year. I'm quite happy, except that I find the synth is too loud, relative to other sounds on my system. There are no controls for volume in my JAWS options, so I went into Windows volume mixer and turned it way down, to around 20%, which seems a level I am happy with. Only thing is, now something strange and slightly annoying is happening. If I don't use the voice for a little while, as in, maybe ten seconds or more, when it starts up again, it is quite quiet, and then gradually increases in volume. It's a small thing but I would kind of like the volume to remain at a consistent level. I've tried experimenting with volume levels in Windows to get the perfect balance, but it is surprisingly difficult. In general I don't want JAWS or system sounds to overwhelm things like media players, but everything always seems just a little too loud or too quiet, and of course there are other factors one always has to consider as well, such as the relative volumes of disparate media files, which I am ok with as I'm not a fan of auto-normalisation and such. This thing with JAWS trying to boost its own volume is strange though. Any thoughts from the group? After some thought, I decided to switch my primary synthesiser back to Eloquence. I must say, that JAWS is now acting a lot more like the robust and response screen-reader I would expect on such a relatively fast machine. I spent the past year listening to a nice, mannered, human-sounding voice, but wondering why the devil my computer was being just as slow and clunky at times as my XP machine was. Well, now I have the answer. Duh. These Vocalizer voices are resource-intensive and slow the machine down. Anybody else noticed this? I guess it's a foregone conclusion, but I just assumed my machine would be able to handle it well. I think it'd be ok for reading, but for all practical purposes, well, the trade in favour of performance is an obvious no-brainer. So, what synths does everyone use here, anyway? What are your thoughts on all the software synths out there nowadays? Curiosity question. Also, Eloquence - y'know, it's kind of good to have the old man back. I used them to try and quickly returned to eloquence. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of JM Casey Sent: Monday, June 25, 2018 9:33 AM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: [JAWS-Users] Good ole' Eloquence Hey guys. Re: [JAWS-Users] interesting thoughts/finding about CPU speeds, temperature and JAWS
What programs are accessible that will say the temperatures of the hard drive and your processors? -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of JM Casey Sent: Sunday, June 24, 2018 7:32 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: [JAWS-Users] interesting thoughts/finding about CPU speeds, temperature and JAWS Hey everyone. So, I am running an AMD with six processors rated at, apparently, around 3500 MHZ. My system has 8 GB of Ram and is running Windows 10, 1803, and JAWS 18. My preferred voice is the premium Daniel Vocalizer voice. Yes, these specs are all relevant to the topic. For some time now, I have noticed a certain tendency of my system to lag, or lock up, for several seconds at a time. This only seems to happen when JAWS is running. I'm aware that my choice to use this synth does negatively affect JAWS response time, even on this reasonably fast system. Anyway, the "freezes" seem to affect some programmes more than others, but perhaps particularly Firefox and MS Office products. Sometimes, alt-tabbing between open windows seems rather sluggish. Well, today I ran a utility from a company called Resplendent Software called WhySoSlow. It's basically one of dozens of diagnostic software tools available, that measures your computer's performance by calculating various factors. It measures your CPU speed, memory load, and the temperature of your CPUs using the sensors that modern PCs have. The system was running at a cool 20-something celsius. It was also running at less than half its advertised clockspeed, the programme informed me, and suggested that my CPUs were being "throttled" to conserve power. Now, I'm aware that some of these third party utilities measure specs in weird ways, or make strange and not always advisable recommendations. I've completely gone off using registry cleaners or any such tools for this reason. I'm also aware that modern CPUs can "clock up" when the load on them becomes particularly intensive, but I don't know how well Windows for instance actually manages this feature. However, I decided to try a little experiment. I remembered fiddling a bit with the power settings in Windows 10 previously, but not to any great extent - mostly just to prevent my computer from "going to sleep" when left unattended. In the "power plan" settings within power options, I adjusted the power plan from "balanced", to "optimise for performance", to see if it would make a difference. I then ran WhySoSlow again. My computer is now operating at peak processor speed, all of the time. I suppose it's also using a hell of a lot more power, which might not be a good thing. It's also not "running cool" anymore. In fact, the CPU temperature has doubled all across the board, reaching as high as 65 C, according to this programme (even higher according to the coretemp utility). However - JAWS is now behaving much more responsively. I haven't had any freezes. Alt-tab cycles between programmes nearly instantaneously, and Firefox seems much faster. I don't really have a question for the list. I just thought this was kind of an interesting thing to share, and wondered if anyone else had observed anything similar. It is a fact that with my current setup I am normally at a speed disadvantage when placed against sighted users. This is, I believe, in part because JAWS is somewhat resource-intensive, especially using this type of synthesiser (yes, I have considered switching back to Eloquence). I'm not sure if I ought to keep my setup this way. I don't particularly want a really high power bill and I don't want my computer to overheat, though in theory the automatic cutoffs should engage before anything really bad happens. I actually think it's nice that Windows includes power saving features, but not necessarily at the expense of system performance. But, I did discover a workaround with Chrome (I didn't try it with IE11): When you search for an item and bring up the descripption, there is a combobox to select the quantity. I think the default is one, just make sure it is some whole number and not zero. Now, the workaround: I used the Jaws OCR feature to read the Window. As I read down through the text (I have it set to the default where the things it recognizes are at a slightly lower pitch); when I got to the AddToCart button, I left-clicked it with the slash key on the numpad. For a simple example, if the quantity edit field is blank, then a number needs first to be entered. The same one I was on before trying the Quantum or whatever it's called. The other issue I was having with Firefox 60 and Jaws on The Old Reader: This is what I sent VFO: I am noticing with the latest Firefox 60 (ESR and standard version) when browsing down my list of RSS posts. Be it in a particular feeds entries, a folder created by me or even in the all posts view, when I click enter or press the spacebar to expand that particular entry to show the summary (this is in list view. Not full view) and then later wish to do the same for another RSS entry, Jaws doesnt appear to be able to accomplish this second task. Ive tried using the Jaws cursor, maximizing the window and then pressing enter or spacebar, tabbing to be sure Jaws focus isnt somewhere else, but nothing seems to work. Its basically pick one RSS entry and thats it. The only thing I can do to be able to select another RSS entry to view is do an entire page refresh. Which isnt a solution as once the refresh occurs, all previously unread posts are marked as read. In my case, The Older Reader is marked as my home page and I refer to it all the time. So this one bug is proving to be quite disruptive. I dont know if it has something to do with a virtual buffer focus or some other element, but I am not able to figure it out on my end. To be clear, this particular behavior is not present in prior versions of Firefox. I have been using the V 52.x ESR version before upgrading to v60 without this issue present. So anyway, in the same email response I pasted below, I got this note from the same tech: Also, I did see your other e-mail in which you mentioned a specific Web site. I did look at that Web site, but I found that it requires signing up for an account to see the issues. But, using JAWS 18, I cannot seem to locate this. There are some unlabeled buttons, but from what I can tell, they aren't for the video player at all. I noticed a link at the bottom of the page that says, "blind/screenreader users, click here to view our live broadcast", or something like that. I don't really know why this should make a difference. To do this: 1. If using Windows 7: A. Navigate to Start>All Programs>JAWS (version number)>Explore JAWS>Explore My Settings. B. Highlight all the files in this folder and delete them. 2. If using Windows 8 or above: A. Navigate to your Start screen, type the word "utilities", and select the Utilities option populated for the version number being used. B. Select the option for Explore User Settings. C. Highlight all files in this folder and delete them. If the issue still occurs when running it in Default mode, please run a /type repair on JAWS, as follows: 1. Navigate to the JAWS 2018 installer file. If you don't have it, you may download it from http://www.freedomscientific.com/Downloads/JAWS 2. With the file highlighted, press SHIFT+F10, or hold down the SHIFT key and right click it. 3. Select the option that says "Copy as Path". 4. Press WINDOWS+R to invoke the Run dialog. 5. In the edit field, press CTRL+V to paste the path, then a space at the end of this string. 6. Write the following text exactly (excluding the quotes): "/type repair" 7. Press ENTER or click OK. At the end of the repair, JAWS will prompt you to reboot the machine. If this does not resolve the issue, set Outlook back to default views, as follows: 1. Close Outlook. 2. Press WINDOWS+R to invoke the Run dialog. 3. In the edit field, type the following without the quotes "outlook.exe /cleanviews". 4. Press ENTER. 5. If the issue persists, repeat steps 1 and 2 above. 6. Now, when you click the button to upgrade from the program, the first page has two links near the bottom, one saying "Yes" and the other "No." Click no to get past the business/pro versions, and then on the next page you can safely use a download link. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List On Behalf Of Orlando Enrique Fiol Sent: Monday, April 30, 2018 12:39 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] What Happened to CCleaner Slim Version? Hi Gerald. The CCleaner download page is somewhat counterintuitive. However, once you activate one of the many download links, the standard installer will get downloaded to your default downloads directory. Although CCleaner used to install Avast by default, there is good news. First, using the Jaws cursor in the installer, you can uncheck the relevant box. But better still, the last three versions of CCleaner standard did not automatically install any third party software. The check box for Avast is now absent. I'm still having the vexing and annoying issue of the latest issue of JAWS periodically changing how it reads Outlook messages (windows-7, Outlook 2010). JAWS will be doing a great job of reading a message, then, for no apparent reason, when I bring up the next message, read all kinds of info: "Table 1, row 1, nesting level 3." etc. I have to close Outlook and, sometimes, JAWS and bring them back for JAWS and Outlook to function normally again. I'm doing nothing to cause this to happen except bringing up the next e-mail message. Still, it's an extra step and a distraction. Let's say I'm copying seven items of information from different parts of a webpage. With previous versions of JAWS, I could rely on focus staying where I'd left it on transferring each item to a Word file. This is already a tedious process that requires concentration. Your idea will help, but it's still an extra precaution I shouldn't need to take based on earlier versions of JAWS. Note for anyone following this thread. I don't need to make these changes when using earlier versions of JAWS, which means I spend my day switching between versions. I've just written again to VFO tech support. When I would open up my laptop in the morning and press F-9, to receive my new e-mail's and press Control & the home key all my new unread e-mail's would pop up instantly. In the past couple of weeks, when I do the procedure mentioned above, no new e-mails would pop up. It now takes a very long time and pressing many keys to try and receive my new e-mails. I also noticed, that if I send myself a test e-mail it takes a very long time for my test e-mail to appear on my list. The only difference that I see with my outlook program is that now when I press the insert key and the page down key Jaws says, the number of e-mails I have, the number of unread e-mails and this is a new addition in the past couple of weeks, it says receive/send and of course at the end it says the usual 10%. Could this new addition of Send/Receive cause the problem in my Outlook becoming so sluggish? I do not know what I may have pressed to cause this problem. Where is the scroll lock key? -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Fernando Gregoire Sent: Monday, March 26, 2018 10:03 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] volume short cut Hi Holger, Answers you were given are for quickly opening Volume Mixer, but they actually don't change the volume. In case your keyboard has no volume keys, JAWS provides two scripts, IncreaseSystemVolume and DecreaseSystemVolume, that respectively raises or lower the volume from any application, with no need to open any additional window, and they announce the volume level to which you just set. By default these scripts have no key assignment, but it is easy to map to a convenient keystroke: 1. Press INSERT+J to open the JAWS window or context menu, depending on your setting. 2. Press ALT+U to open the Utilities menu or sub-menu, depending on your setting. 3. Press K to open Keyboard Manager. 4. When Keyboard Manager opens, press TAB to move to the right pane, that is, the one containing key mappings of the file selected in the left pane, that should be Default if you launched Keyboard Manager as I indicated. If you ran Keyboard Manager in a different way, press CTRL+SHIFT+D to make sure you're working in the Default file instead of the one specific for the application from which you opened Keyboard Manager. 5. In the list view, find the script whose name is DecreaseSystemVolume. You'll find that it is not assigned to any key. 6. Press CTRL+A to add a keystroke to this script. 7. Press the keystroke you want to use to lower the volume. In my desktop computer I use CTRL+SCROLL LOCK+DOWN ARROW. 8. Press ENTER, and choose OK in the confirmation dialog which appears. 9. You'll be returned to the list view of scripts. Do the same with the IncreaseSystemVolume script, which you could assign to CTRL+SCROLL LOCK+UP ARROW. 10. Close Keyboard Manager with ALT+F4. Advantages of this method are that volume is changed on the fly with no need to change the application, and it works even when you are on the Windows Logon screen. As a disadvantage, these keystrokes don't work when you aren't using JAWS or when you are in a program in which you configured JAWS to be in Sleep Mode. Since the update, my computer has basically slowed down to a crawl. It's hard to type anything, because there is a several-second delay between hitting a key, and getting a response from Jaws.I also have a great deal of Static in my computer speakers, which I never had before. Finally, I find that I often have to restore focus with Jaws when doing a particular task. I even went back to an earlier version of Jaws, and the problems persisted. I called Freedom Scientific Tech support, and we re-installed the latest Jaws update. The problem still persisted. I even did a Jaws repair with no luck. Needless to say, I'm not very happy!! Nothing when I typed into the search box, nothing when I turned the pc cursor on and arrowed down the page, nothing when I refreshed the screen with JAWS key-escape, nothing when I rotated through the f6 options. No luck with Windows-tab or alt-tab in going away from the page and coming back. I turned off the computer and when it rebooted, all was fine. This morning, Chrome was fine. But when I went to Edge for a while and then came back to Chrome, the same thing happened as the day before. This time, rather than shutting the computer down, I just restarted JAWS. When it came back, it had sorted itself out and Chrome is working properly again. Is this a bug? Several others reported things not working properly till the computer was rebooted. I wouldn't want this either. - Original Message - From: "JM Casey" To: Sent: Tuesday, March 13, 2018 5:00 PM Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Having a song play when an e-mail is opened? Even if you do all this, it's not guaranteed to work for the recipient. Many people, especially those using older e-mail software, will not view messages in html. I personally would not want something to start playing out of my speakers when I opened an e-mail message. That, plus the space restrictions involved in sending e-mail, make me think it'd be much simpler and more practical merely to provide a link to the mp3 in your message. -Original Message- From: JAWS-Users-List [mailto:jaws-users-list-boun...@jaws-users.com] On Behalf Of Steve Sent: March 13, 2018 3:47 PM To: jaws-users-list@jaws-users.com Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Having a song play when an e-mail is opened? Depending on which email program you use, you can do that, but if you want it to open when the email is opened, then you have to make that segment of your song a .wav file extension. Once you convert that, you may need to edit down to a size that is less than one MB. Since you are using Outlook from Office 2010 as your email client, do the following: Use MsWord as your editor to create an email message. In your office program go to Tools, Options, Mail tab; mail format. On that tab, set your message format to HTML, plain-text won't work. Hit Apply, and OK to Exit the options area. Now, create a new message. A dialog will pop up that Word is starting your email editor. There will be the typical email fields, (I don't know how well Jaws will read them -- I haven't tried this in my Office MsWord 2010 version.) You will need a Web Tools toolbar, which you can make visible by hitting View, Toolbars, and finding the Web Tools option. It will pop-up a small window with various icons. One of them is the "Sound" icon, you may need to simulate a mouseclick on it; it will then pop-up the background sound option. You can then hit the Browse button and browse to your St. Patrick's Day file. I said above that it needs to be in .wav format, but in looking around, it also supports .mid, .midi, .au, .rmi, .aif and .aiff. Many people recommend using .midi. After you press open on the sound file, you can then choose how many times you want that message sound to play -- from one to five times, or to infinite which means it will play until the message is closed. - Original Message - From: "Judy Jones" To: Sent: Tuesday, March 13, 2018 1:15 PM Subject: [JAWS-Users] Having a song play when an e-mail is opened? Hi group, I am now using Jaws 18 in its latest configuration. I just priced out the upgrade to Jaws 2018 and it will cost me $400 including the SMA. Before I make that kind of investment, I'd appreciate it if someone would tell me whether Jaws 2018 is worth the investment. I'm happy with jaws 18. I would have no objection to upgrading if someone can give me good reasons for that change. I have been studying the messages on our list and to tell you the truth, what I'm hearing is somewhat discouraging. Many people are having issues with 2018. However, I'd be willing to bet that the same thing happened when Jaws 18 was introduced. There is always a time where people have to adjust to new technology or software. Re: [JAWS-Users] the stars in password fields
I agree this is my arguement for having an option to speak passwords. Note the word Option. - Original Message - From: "Rebecca Lineberger" To: Sent: Monday, March 5, 2018 9:04 PM Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] the stars in password fields The decision has been made, but just a final comment from someone who wrote VFO about this several months ago ... I can understand the potential problems of a spoken password in the workplace, but for those using JAWS For Home Use, rather than the professional version, I can see no security risk. Many of us who migrated from Window-Eyes used this feature on our home computers for years without a problem. There are several physiological conditions, such as arthritis or neuropathy that could cause someone to have difficulty typing. In these cases, as well as for anyone of us who might find typing one thing and hearing another confusing, the person would benefit from hearing the characters as they typed, especially in those situations where accuracy the first time really mattered. Smile. Certainly, copying and pasting is a way around this, but in this case, not only is the password spoken, as it's typed, but it is displayed on the screen, as it would not have been when in a password edit field. It is part of the reason we have a Non-Tandem build of our software posted also on the web. Hi Robin, I have been experimenting with the, *, dictionary tweak, & Jaws only reported UnReconciled when typing a password if I tweaked the Default JDF dictionary manager, but not when I tweaked the Word JDF dictionary manager. The Word JDF dictionary manager was my experimental application. But, if I changed the tweak to,* , a star then a space, in the default JDF dictionary manager, then used a space after the star in the Word application JDF dictionary then everything worked as it should all the way around. What I'm trying to say is if you want the,*, to say, UnReconciled in a home budgit, then add a space after the star in the application dictionary, but then you'll also have to put a star then a space in front of any entry in the application as well. If I've totally confused you by now, just let the list know what application you want to use, & I'll type up a set of steps that'll get it done for you. Take care. Mike. Sent from my iBarstool.
