Re: [JAWS-Users] lost reading of status line with jaws 2018 and outlook 2016

2018-05-29 Thread Gary Lee

   Further information.

status line reading resumes if jaws 2018 is unloaded and reloaded.
Then disappears if an email is opened, or an attachment is saved.

not sure how to troubleshoot this one. I am a former window-eyes user, still
trying to wrap my head around the way jaws functions.

any help on troubleshooting this would be appreciated.

Hi.

They're kind of expensive though, but I just got a Lenovo Think Pad t480s. It's
been pretty painless so far. My only complaint is that 14 inch computers are a
little too big for me, I prefer 13 o3 11 or something like that, so I don't
need to move my hands as far to hit the delete key and the like. And the palm
rest on this thing digs into my wrists. But, it's a good performer, seems very
sturdy and although I did have to make some modifications, one of which
required the sharp keys utility, I got the keyboard to be everything I need.

The speakers are lousy with the enhancements turned off, which is needed as
with the enhancements on it pops and clicks like all the other computers do
with enhancements on that I know anything about.

Battery life is pretty good, under very light load it'll get around 16 hours,
if you're not using it I think it'll get more than 20 hours. If you're doing
something a little arduous the life can drop quite a bit, 5 hours while
coppying 60 gb across my network for instance.

But, this is a pretty involved computer purchase, I customized it on Lenovo's
website and ordered it directly. There are parts of the Lenovo website that are
pretty hard to use.

That said, you can get some of these on Amazon. I'm kind of thinking I would
recommend a think pad, now that I know what I do about the customizability of
the keyboard function keys and how to change them into function keys and the
like. You can change the function buttons to be function buttons by default,
without the fn key, and you can swap ctrl and FN to get control to be on the
bottom left like other windows computers do, without needing the bios, although
you can do it in the bios too.

Lenovo Flex 4 seems like a nice system. I've seen a couple of them. May want to
avoid Lenovo Yoga 920, Yoga 720, they scrapped the context menu applications
key for some strange reason.

Dell xps13 2 in 1, or dell xps13 not 2 in 1 (9370) are both very nice systems
if you're going for dell, although they have the dell wave max audio joy.

Cher, here's how to do it in Firefox:

1. Press alt-t for tools, then o for options.
2. Tab many times to the "Language" section.
3. Keep tabbing until you get the option to select "Check my spelling as I
type."

Anyway, someone was saying something about adding the word recent with a colon

put this recent with a colon? Is it before my name or before my email address?
Are their any spaces after the colon?

Thanks for posting your detailed rant. I, too, am enormously frustrated that
browsing has become so time--consuming and sometimes unreliable. I'm constantly
switching among three browsers and two versions of JAWS because different
combinations work best with different websites, and even then some websites
remain hard, if not impossible, to navigate. The other day, a certain website
owner had taken steps to make everything accessible, only for me to install
Firefox 60 and generate a host of new issues. No wonder some website designers
get frustrated with accessibility obligations.

Developments on the Web seem to be moving faster than screenreader companies
can keep up with. But I wonder why non-screenreader users aren't also
encountering limitations with different browsers, since each seems to function

Have not used firefox ever since the massive changes that firefox did with 57
and beyond. I just use chrome more then I used firefox versions. As with
chrome, there are all kinds of accessibility extensions and other extension
that makes my browsing a pleasure on chrome where as on firefox its like
going through sites on a horse and buggy where as on chrome its like going
through sites with a fast sports car.

Aaron,

But I wonder why non-screenreader users aren't also
encountering limitations with different browsers, since each seems to function
differently.

I switched to Firefox 60, found it still a bit lacking in performance, and
switched back to Chrome. A site that makes it painfully clear which one is
winning is amazon.com. Just doing a search for something and noticing how long
pages need to appear and be readable, and how responsive navigation keys arrows

totally. I was under the impression it would run better than chrome but that
hasn't been so for me.

Edge is reasonably quick loading pages and allowing me to begin arrowing on

[JAWS-Users] Excel and JAWS 2018 Issue

2018-05-12 Thread Gary Ray
Gary Ray here.

A couple of friends of mine are having issues being able to read excel 2016
with a 365 subscription. They are using JAWS 2018 with latest update. They
have new Lenovo laptops with 1709.

They tell me that when they open a spreadsheet, they cannot arrow around to
read cells. In my Excel 2010 using JAWS 2018 with the latest update and
1709, I am having no problems.

Can anyone give me any ideas of what to tell them to help them out.

Thanx!

Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Firefox 60

I still had a 52.X ESR installer on my system. SO I just uninstalled V60,
ran the 52.X installer and updated to the most current one capable with the
older version and am now am on Firefox Version 52.8.0. The same one I was on
before trying the Quantum or whatever it's called.
The other issue I was having with Firefox 60 and Jaws on The Old Reader:
This is what I sent VFO:
I am noticing with the latest Firefox 60 (ESR and standard version) when
browsing down my list of RSS posts. Be it in a particular feed’s entries, a
folder created by me or even in the all posts view, when I click enter or
press the spacebar to expand that particular entry to show the summary (this
is in list view. Not full view) and then later wish to do the same for
another RSS entry, Jaws doesn’t appear to be able to accomplish this second
task.
I’ve tried using the Jaws cursor, maximizing the window and then pressing
enter or spacebar, tabbing to be sure Jaws focus isn’t somewhere else, but
nothing seems to work. It’s basically pick one RSS entry and that’s it. The
only thing I can do to be able to select another RSS entry to view is do an
entire page refresh. Which isn’t a solution as once the refresh occurs, all
previously unread posts are marked as read.
In my case, The Older Reader is marked as my home page and I refer to it all
the time. So this one bug is proving to be quite disruptive. I don’t know if
it has something to do with a virtual buffer focus or some other element,
but I am not able to figure it out on my end. To be clear, this particular
behavior is not present in prior versions of Firefox. I have been using the
V 52.x ESR version before upgrading to v60 without this issue present.
So anyway, in the same email response I pasted below, I got this note from
the same tech:
Also, I did see your other e-mail in which you mentioned a specific Web
site. I did look at that Web site, but I found that it requires signing up
for an account to see the issues. If you could provide us with a site with
these issues that does not require signing up for an account, that would be
very helpful.

Ok... but as I specifically mentioned this website, it kind of defeats the
purpose...
Again, probably one of those things I'd have to call in to better
demonstrate the exact problem, but I'm busy throughout the day and always on
the phone, doubt I'd be able to do it any time soon.
This is why I figured in part to just go back to V 52 and maybe wait for
another Jaws or Firefox release with hopefully some more improvements. I've
waited a few months, what's a couple of more weeks...
As long as you don't mess with your profile on your system, then
uninstalling and reinstalling any version of Firefox shouldn't be a big
deal. That said, standard caveats of backing up and all that apply. Also, I
do have a Firefox account for easier browser syncing between multiple PCs
and my iPhone so there's that too.

I'm experiencing several problems with Firefox 60. Here's a copy of the
email I just sent VFO explaining what they are. I did mention in the message
that I recently upgraded from Firefox 52ESR to 60.

  1. When I try to log in to a website, Firefox's message offering to save
the log-in information is spoken, and then spoken several more times. I
caught that to decline, I should press alt-d. when I did so, Firefox hung up
and eventually gave me the options to wait or close. After what was already
a long wait, I closed it.

I've encountered this message several times since. Pressing alt-d led to the
same result, as did my try with alt-n (which often brings up other options).
The only way to get past this message is to wait for it to go away.

  1. On the donations page of the website
www.wnyc.org, the combo boxes for state and country
don't give any information, e.g., state abbreviations. These combo boxes do
work with IE11. A similar problem came up on another website with Firefox
60, but I can't be sure I've diagnosed the problem yet.

  1. Placemarkers are behaving erratically. None carried over from Firefox
52ESR, so I've had to start over again putting them in place. One repeating
problem is that even though I uncheck the box that would apply the
placemarker throughout a website, the placemarkers all apply on every page.
This means I've accumulated twelve placemarkers on every page of one website
I regularly visit, even though I want at most three per page.

  1. I'm also finding that some placemarkers just don't work when I press
the k key. Even though the placemarker list shows one for that location, k
doesn't locate it.

I'm working with JAWS 2018.1804.26.400,, and my OS is Windows 7.

So far with the latest Jaws, it seems to be working ok for me. Using the ESR

One frustrating thing though, my homepage which is the all posts page of The
Old Reader (www.theoldreader.com ) is acting
kind of funky.

My list of RSS subs isn’t showing up. Nor are the title subscriptions for
each post. Since this is my home page and I refer to it all the time to
check the news throughout the day, it may be disruptive enough for me at
least that I may go back to the ESR 52.X for now. By any chance is anyone
else who is a user of The Old Reader dealing with this particular issue?

Otherwise, no other problems that I’ve come across yet. I am noticing that I
need to screen refresh and or tab a lot more to get JFW to react or speak,
but I think I started to notice that even in the V 52.0.8 or whatever the
last version of ESR before V 60.

Anyway, for those who’ve been itching to give Firefox 60 a spin, knock
yourselves out.

input correctly even if I type 05/05/2018 it keeps happening.
Any other date I input appears correctly.

Hey group,

I'm using the latest Windows 10 with Jaws 2018 build 1710.36. I don't know
what happened, but about a week ago all my file associations were reset.
Groove Music instead of WinAmp, Win 10 mail app instead of Outlook, and all

And, of course, doing a system restore would affect a bunch of programs and
I guess I wasn't willing to do that.

Thanks for your ideas,

I temporarily lose speech often when accessing an SD card in my built-in
card reader. Here's what happens.

When I insert my SD card into the card reader, most times I lose speech
for

about 20 seconds and each time I take some action the same thing happens.
For example, I must wait about 20 seconds or so after inserting the card
before I can arrow up and down to locate a folder. Once I get speech, I
can
arrow up and down fine, but as soon as I enter on a folder name to open
the

folder, I lose speech again for about 20 seconds. The same thing happens
when I press the applications key to bring up the context menu. I must
wait

the 20 seconds or so before I can arrow through the menu.

I'm running JAWS 2018 on Windows 10 version 1703, although this same
problem

occurred on JAWS 18 on this computer. This only happens with SD cards and
not absolutely every time, but most times. Accessing the local SSD,
external

USB drives and network drives all behave as they should.

I suspect this might be an issue with some setting in Windows 10, but I
have

no idea what setting or where to look for it. And perhaps it's something
altogether different. I'm open to all suggestions.

Thanks,
Jeff

Hey everyone. I don't normally post requests like this, but hopefully this
is alright, and JAWS-related enough in the sense that I do want something
that will, obviously, work well with the screen-reader.

My girlfriend and I were just talking about games we could play. I have an
old braille monopoly board from probably around the late 70s, and we just
played a tense and nail-biting game. I always wanted a Trivial Pursuit game
with all the questions in braille and a tactile board, but as far as I know
that's never been a thing. We decided we both like trivia games, so I was
wondering if anyone here knows about any available for PC? I'm not
necessarily looking for something online, although I suppose that'd be fine
really - just something that the two of us can play here on nights we feel
like staying in. It should be something a sighted person can also easily
play, too, so although I do appreciate for example the RS Games site (no
trivia on there to my knowledge, but I bring it up because it's a
site/client especially geared toward blind players), something with a little
more screen feedback would be cool. I'm willing to shell out a few dollars
for this, but of course we don't need anything too fancy or elaborate - just
something with a good database of questions and answers.

What do you all think?

[JAWS-Users] JAWS unable to access certain items on a web page

2017-06-06 Thread Gary Patterson
There have been instances that there are items on the page; however, I
normally cannot access an item that is truly on the page with JAWS. This
morning I tried using F6, and I don't know what made a button visible on the
page. Does F6 seem to allow access to items, which may be wayed out on the
right of the page? I don't know if the F6 gave more access to the items that
JAWS doesn't initially access. The reason I have some doubts as to how you
access these items because I tried a good bit of alternatives. F6 just
seemed like an unnormal thing to try. It's one of these things that a reader
can see on the page but JAWS doesn't access the items normally. I have had
instances where JAWS doesn't access all the material on the system tray.

Any thought and/or tips would be interesting.

Hi Adrian,
Yes I have just selected single line and press the ok button. When I have
done this it still types in double line spacing even though it says single
in the space box. I have two W10 computers running Word 2010 and they both
do the exact same thing. The only way I can get it to single line space is
to put the number 1 in the at box right after you tab from single then I
have to put a check mark in where is says, Don't add space between
paragraphs of the same style check box. Then I can press ok then it will
type in single line spacing. Then if I close word and re-open Word then it
will type in double line spacing even though it shows single line spacing in
the paragraph dialog box. I had the Microsoft Disability line work on it and
they could not get it to stay on single line spacing.
So let me ask you one question. When you are using your word and you first
open it up does it type in single space or double space?

Hello, everyone.

It seems that I have narrowed the Jaws crashing issue on my current Windows
7 computer down to the following sequence of events.

Jaws seems to crash when I exit Microsoft Word while Outlook is also open.
Once this happens, Jaws will stop speaking, and I can't re-activate Jaws
either via the usual Alt Control J shortcut, or the Windows R command.

The only way I can re-start Jaws is to do a hard shut-down of the computer.

My sighted wife says Jaws looks like it is still up on the screen, but she
can't do anything to re-activate it either, short of manually shutting down
the computer.

Does anyone have a sequence of steps to get out of this issue?

Does anyone know if FS is aware of the problem??

I did not have this problem prior to updateing to Jaws 18.

Dr. Tom Behler from Michigan

I was aware of programs that do that kind of thing. I have never used such an
animal but it is good to know that they are out there if the need arises.

They enter blocks of text and lots of other things preprogrammed in to their
respective memory. Thank you for giving me another title to add to my list of

Hello David and all:

I don't know if you are familiar with Auto Hot Key, but it is a free program
that enables you to assing hot keys to just about anything, including being
able to paste blocks of text that are repetitive just about anywhere. It is
accessible with Jaws, works off a text file which you can prepare using a text
editor, but it takes a bit of a learning curve. I use it daily since quite a
while ago, it allows me, for instance, to assign Alt-Windows-O to open Outlook
from the Run menu without add-ons, or assign a combination of six leeters that
do not form a word to a few paragraphs of repetitive text, which I can then
paste on an email, document or elsewhere by just typing the six letters and the
space bar.

Just an idea for those that may want to look into it.

Humberto

First of all before anybody makes a comment there is no such thing as a married
windows key, LOL. So now that the silliness is out of the way here is the
purpose of this message.

My wireless keyboard has only a left handed windows key, but most of the time
if I am on another system that has a right handed windows key I will use it for
most of what I need to do. I can use the left key good enough but it crossed my
mind this afternoon that with a script it might bebe possible to simulate such
an animal assigning say control + R which so far as I am aware is an unused
keystroke. The same with control + E. So I wrote two scripts to do the
following functions. Open up the run dialog and open up windows explorer.

This inspiration came to me from Mr. Mike, because he sent me a script last
evening that triggered this bit of creativity.

I’ll probably post them on the server this evening and maybe a recording demo
of the process if there is any interest out among you folks.

Hi Annette,
Give these steps a try, they work for me.
I wrote them yesterday, and as far as creating playlists, you should be able
to do that from your phone as well.

These instructions were written for ITunes version 12.5.4.42, using Jaws
version 16.

Once ITunes has been configured to automatically sync with your phone when
connected , follow these steps to move music or ring tones to your phone:
Music:
NOTE: Make sure that the files you select are not .wav format, While the
IPhone will play these files, they are far too large to transfer to the
phone since they will rapidly use up available space on the phone.
.mp3 would be a better choice,.

1. Select individual songs or an album folder, and copy it to the clipboard.
2. Press enter on your user folder name shortcut on the Desktop.
3. Once in your user folder, locate your Music folder and press enter.
4. From within your Music folder, press the letter I to move to the ITunes
folder, then press enter to open it.
5. Press the letter I again to locate the ITunes Media folder, then press
enter to open it.
6. The first folder in this list is:
Automatically Add to ITunes,
so press the spacebar to select the folder, then press enter to open it.
7. Paste your selections from the clipboard here.
Note: If pasting individual files, I would make sure that none of the file
names are the same or have like track numbers in the file name.
8. Once you have pasted your files here you can close the folder with Alt
F4.
9. Now, from the Desktop press enter on the ITunes shortcut, to open the
ITunes program.
10. Once ITunes has loaded, plug your phone into your computer, and syncing
should begin.
When syncing has finished, you should hear a tone.
Now check your Music app on your phone to make sure the songs are there.

The process for moving ring tones to your phone are the same as above,
making sure that the files you are using for ring tones are of the correct
format,(.m4r) and no longer than 30 seconds in length.
No matter what format your original file is, you will need to convert it to
M4A first.
To convert files to the proper format, do the following:
1. Open Pazera Free Audio Extractor Portable, and press enter on
theAudioExtractor.exe.
2. Next, once the program has opened, press the Alt key, and right arrow to
the File List menu, then arrow to "Add files to list", and press enter.
3. This will place you in a standard "Open", dialogue where you can browse
for your files.
4. Once you have found your file, or files, then tab to the "OPEN" button
and spacebar it.
5. Now, you will be in a dialogue for choosing your output format, and your
file or files should be selected, so tab once to choose the format.
6. Arrow to m4a, then press the Alt key to open the menus, and select
"convert checked files", from the file menu, and press enter.
The conversion process will start, and Jaws should announce the progress.
7. When conversion has completed, you can close the program with Alt F4.
8. Go to the folder where your original file is located and you should find
your converted file or files.
9. Once you have located your files, you will need to change the file
extension, by doing the following:
A. With the file name highlighted, press the F2 key to rename the file.
B. Now, move to the end of the file name, and delete the "A", from the end
of the file extension, and replace it with the letter "R" and press enter to
close the dialogue.
Do this for each file you want to use.
10. Finally, use the steps above for moving music to your phone to move your
ring tones.

HTH,
Rick Justice

Tomorrow's another day, another way!
and if tomorrow never comes, problem solved!

USB 3.0 ports are the same shape as USB 2.0 ports, and usually are blue
in color. usually, but not always, the 3.0 port is on the left side of
the laptop.
that odd shaped port must be something else, like a HDMI port?

Many times that will be the HDMI port. Without looking I could not say with
100% certainty, however, I have been around quite a few computers with multiple
USB ports and if there is a port that looks a lot like a USB port it is usually
an HDMI port.
For example, this machine I am typing on has two USB ports and an HDMI on the
left moving from front to back. And on the right is a single USB port. I would
need to ask someone sighted which one is blue. Smile!

[JAWS-Users] outlook 2010 unable to access tabs on the message

2015-08-16 Thread Gary Patterson
I have JAWS V16, latest update.

When I access the site www.woodpeck.com, I am unable to access the checkout
tab after specifying my orders.

I am using Windows 7.

Here is my recent message that I didn't receive any suggestions for the
problem. I am unable to find the support form for Freedomscientific on their
web site.

On this site, there are tabs (I assume at the top of the page) where you can
checkout for your order to be processed.

I spent over an hour last night trying to navigate to the checkout tab. I
don't know what I did to actually reach the checkout tab. I had tried F6 and

CTRL+Tab without success.

If anyone has a solution, I would be ever greatful for the tip. I suppose
that someway with scripts might be able to navigate to the tabs.

I just completed my third update to windows ten, this time on our w_8.1 laptop.
I used the Microsoft media tool.
I first reserved windows, this morning on our laptop.
I then ran the F S windows tool for preparing for windows 10.
Next I downloaded the media tool from Microsoft.
I went to my download folder, and ran the media tool.
I chose, update this computer, from the media tool.
I had speech all the way through until it was done and loaded the windows 10
system.
I tried narrator, but it would not see the next button at that time until
windows 10 had been totally installed.
I pressed the next button.
I Chose express settings.
I press the next button, and I waited until the desktop with windows 10 loaded.
this installation was super smooth.
I uninstalled and reinstalled Jaws, did the same with my Mcafee, all is good.
I then customized the system and checked for new updates.

an answer for another post about the windows.old folder.
I think we have to wait the 30 days before we can totally remove the
windows.old folder.
Microsoft wants to give everyone the chance to go back to their previous
version if they wish to go back after 30 days.
I’m tired now, time for more coffee...ahahahhahahah

Subject: [JAWS-Users] AFB Creates anAccessible Video Player and Makes It
Available As a Free Download

Just the other day I had a problem trying to listen to a video on a web
site. If I can locate the site again I shall give this a whirl.

The American Foundation for the Blind Creates an Accessible Video Player and

Makes It Available As a Free Download

NEW YORK (May 5, 2015)-Today, the American Foundation for the Blind (AFB)
made its new, accessible HTML5 embedded video player available as a free
download. The AFB Accessible Player makes it easy for people with vision
loss to play videos online, something that can be fraught with accessibility

challenges.

People with vision loss need equal access to online videos for school, work

and entertainment. People who are blind typically use only a keyboard, but
many current video players are designed for mouse only, with no way to
interact with the controls via the keyboard, said Crista Earl, director of
AFB Web Services. Other video players have buttons with unlabeled images,
so people using screen readers and people with low vision can't easily fast
forward, pause or rewind the video.

The AFB Accessible Player leverages HTML 5 and cascading style sheets (CSS)
to allow low-vision users to take advantage of websites' high-contrast color

schemes to select the font sizes and colors they find easiest to read. The
controls are labeled with text, so they work with any kind of assistive
technology, such as screen-reading software, braille displays and
screen-magnification software, as well as a mouse. The video can be expanded

to full screen, which is helpful for users with low vision. It can be used
either as an embedded YouTube player or as a standard player, and the custom

control layout supports both English and Spanish languages. The player also
provides fallback options for older browsers. HTML5 is the standard
supported by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C), which provides enhanced
functionality for modern websites and helps make the Internet more
accessible.

AFB's own websites are designed for accessibility, and AFB Tech, AFB's
technology division, regularly helps businesses to make their online
presence more user friendly for people with disabilities. Initially, the AFB

Accessible Player was developed for visitors to the AFB family of websites,
but because so many developers are looking for specific solutions to make
their websites accessible, AFB made the decision to share the player online.

This HTML5 player is unlike anything else currently available, and we feel
this is a big leap forward for blind and visually impaired users, added
Earl.

As an organization, we are committed to promoting accessibility for people
who are blind or visually impaired, said Carl R. Augusto, AFB president and

CEO. We encourage developers to download and use this video player. With
more than 20 million Americans living with vision loss, a lot of people
could benefit from wide use of this player.

AFB's new HTML5 player is available for download free of charge at

www.afb.org/player.

###

About AFB

The American Foundation for the Blind (AFB) is a national nonprofit that
expands possibilities for people with vision loss. AFB's priorities include
broadening access to technology; elevating the quality of information and
tools for the professionals who serve people with vision loss; and promoting

independent and healthy living for people with vision loss by providing them

and their families with relevant and timely resources. Headquartered in New
York, AFB is proud to house the Helen Keller Archives and honor the more
than 40 years that Helen Keller worked tirelessly with AFB.

Hi Mike,

I tried the things you have suggested with no luck. The mark as unread option
is unavailable in the edit menu. I imagine so because the message is already
unread. I'm thinking that it must be some display problem keeping jaws from
reading the read/ unread status. Any ideas?

I think the order to get URLs copies is:

I use Talkine checkbook from Reading Made Easy. I've used it for years now
and it is an excellent program.

You do have to purchase larger checks for this program, but for me, it's
worth the cost to be independent in check writing.

Their URL is:

Bob,

I use testmy.net. For a download test I enter on download test on the main
page. On the next page I choose the smar test and it'll test according to the
first little bit of speed it measures and run the rest accordingly. I do the
same for an upload test. Test results will be below that. To get to the results
quickly I do a search for the word star and you'll be a few lines above the
results.

Hi Shane,

Once you open the message from an individual whose address you would like to
capture:

1. Shift+Tab 5 times to the From field. If the message has an attachment,
you will have to Shift+Tab 6 times to get to the From field.
2. Once in the From field, Control+A to select the entire field.
3. Open the application key context menu and up arrow 3 times; you should
hear add sender to contacts or something like that, press Enter.
4. A new contact dialog will appear with the sender's name and address
filled out. You can Tab through the field and add more information if
desired. If not, simply press Escape and answer the prompt.
5. You will be returned to the message; close the message with Escape.

add one from an email. I went to the from field, selected it with
shift+control+right arrow. When I hit the applications key, I get cut

I haven't done an audio tutorial for quite some time because nothing has
crossed my desk I found interesting enough until now. I believe I will start
work on a recording this week as well if time permits as it will be a short
week.

It pulls out all non-Microsoft drivers which is all you really need and save
them to their own directories. It is not as elegant as say Driver Magician
but it is free so the price is right for anybody who can't afford the more
expensive alternative.

One solution for running Malware Bytes is to schedule the scans when your
machine is up and running.

Several times, I opened the Malware Bytes application and navigated around
the window. Later I discovered the program was running scans when I was in
the window; however, I don't know what I did to cause this event to occur.
You may have to have some sighted assistance to schedule scans; I don't
remember if I was able to schedule them independently. Try using the OCR
function in JAWS when you find instances of no text being read by JAWS.

Gary Ray here.

I am sorry to be bringing this thread back up, but I just got around to
trying the steps. No matter what I did, the changes I put in would not hold
for files that had previously shown up as side by side, 2 page views.

JFW 14 and Word 2010.

I have JFW 15, but it gave me so much heartburn that I abandoned it and
probably will not try it again since we are so close to JFW 16. God, I hope
JFW 16 is not so difficult.

The problem I had was that JFW 15 kept freezing the PC while using Word.
What a pain! I just don't have those issues in JFW 14. It mostly occurred
when ALT Tabbing back and forth from Word to other programs. JFW was still
on the screen, but the sucker just stopped talking. I was unable to get
Narrator to start so I could unload everything and shut the PC off. It just
seemed to kill all sounds. I could never get it to do the silence thing on
demand. I just could not seem to find any sort of pattern. So, calling FS
Tech Support was not something I was willing to do...smile.

So, back to the question...does anyone else have experience using the steps
below and getting them to work?

I'll appreciate hearing anyone's experiences.

Hi Gary and all,

for those with the issue of Office 2007 and above not presenting a Word file
as a continuous document, try the following instructions I typed up some
time ago:

When you launch Word 2007 for the first time it will most likely be
configured with the Print View. The Print Layout view shows your document as
it will look when it is printed. If you are a JAWS user you can quickly
verify if you are using the Print view by pressing Insert + letter T. Listen
to the entire Jaws message, and at the end of the message you should hear
Print view. At first installation of Office 2007 there is a chance you
might have this Print View in the 2-page view, which makes reading through
documents difficult as you will end up skipping every other page. As a
screen reader user you will want to configure Word 2007 to open using the
Print View as well as insuring Word is in the Whole page view rather than
the Many pages view.

To Configure the Print view in Word 2007:
1. Launch Microsoft Word by going to the Windows7 Start menu search box and
typing the following: winword.
Note: Please don't open any document just yet.
2. Press Alt + letter W to select the View tab on the Ribbon.
3. You can press the tab key to navigate through all of the options within
this View menu.
4. The first item will be Print Layout Button. Make sure you hear the word
pressed. If this button is not pressed simply press enter on it to
activate it.
5. After completing the previous steps you should be returned to your blank
document.

To Configure the Zoom to Display single Page View in Word 2007:
1. Press Alt + letter W to select the View tab on the Ribbon then press the
letter Q to open the Zoom dialogue.
2. You will land on a radio button. Arrow down until you select Whole
page.
3. Tab twice or until you get to a spinbox. Make sure this is set to 75%.
You can either arrow up and down to make adjustments, or you can simply type
in the value.
4. Tab to Ok and hit enter.
5. Review these changes have taken by quickly pressing alt + W then letter
Q. Tab around and verify the settings are correct. Press escape to close
this dialogue.
6. Open a document which spans multiple pages. Arrow through the document to
insure that when you reach line 25 or so you progress into page 2.

Though the ribbon options will have changed from Word 2007 to Word 2010,
etc, the idea is the same, so simply adapt the instructions for your version
of office.

Oh yeah, I should add that once you make these changes they will stick, and
you will not have to make them again. Smile.

Please let me know if you need absolutely any additional help

Folks, please stop this practice. It is really becoming annoying and as you
may or may not have figured out by now when we catch such messages and most
of the time we do they simply get kicked to the street so to speak.

This just gives us more work and honestly reading all of the mail on here to
make sure it is on topic ETC is more than enough.
I know I've said this before and probably will say it again.

Here's a possible new course of action. Maybe we'll just start kicking such
people off the list since they feel the guidelines don't apply to them any
way.

I know this might make some people angry but we're not here to win a

Oh and don't begin such messages with the old line, sorry for the cross post

Cross posting is the practice of sending the same message out to multiple
recipients at the same time. For example sending a message to your mother
while carbon copying the same message to your brother, sister ETC.
Many people send the same message out to multiple mailing lists at the same
time which might be a time saver but not always on topic for every list
involved. So we adopted the policy in the beginning that if you want to post
to this list the message must be sent only to this list and nobody else at
the same time. Some might get posted but the server is quite good about
catching such things. Then what happens is those messages get held for
moderation. At that point we have to read them and send an approval or
denial notice depending on the message to the server. It's not a long
process but when it happens 10 times a day or more depending on the day it
starts to get annoying. Your messages have been fine and yes I see you are a
new member, welcome to our little corner of the world so to speak.

Emne: [JAWS-Users] question regarding jaws and MSWord;

good morning all;

I have a quesstion from a client,

regarding word, he's using MSOffice 2010.

I hope this email finds you doing very well. I have a question about Jaws
and word. Jaws is giving me a hard time when I am reading through word
documents. First it will not read when the document changes pages instead it
just stops reading. This is when I am reading line by line. In the past it
would read smoothly to the next page and just announce page 2. It also
won't let me continue on to the next page unless I read word by word then it
carries me over to the next page. In addition sometimes it will skip pages
for example starting on page 1 and then jumping to page 3 and I can't read
page 2 unless I go back to the end of page 1 and move forward word by word
until it advances to page 2. This is very frustrating and it is slowing me
down a lot at the moment. If you can offer any help or suggestions it would
be very greatfully appreciated. I hope this is a common problem and
something easy to fix. Take care for now.

Thanks for getting back to me. I have the window maximized and it is still
giving me trouble. The problem is if I want to cut and paste or edit the
material in any way it won't let me because Jaws will stop at the line break
between pages. Also some pages will disappear for example it might start on
page 1 then jump ahead to page 3 or 4 and then I have to go back to where
the end of page 1 is and move forward using Control and the Arrow kets to
move word by word. If I accidently go to far for example on to page 3 from
page 2, I lose page 2 again and have to repet my steps to get back onto that
page. My text is all there, it is just a pain to access it and edit.

If I do incert and down errow it will read everything.

Anyway, I don't know if that helps or not.

Hi Juan,

That's just one of many. Again though, is this not being experienced by
anyone else, or is it just me and Juan?

I mean, I saw fixes for Thunderbird and Outlook, but nothing about Windows
Mail, or Windows Live mail.

Is anyone experiencing the bugs we're referring to?

I've listed just a few below:

*Unable to read the information in the various edit fields with the
alt+number keys
*Unable to read status lines in any message or the main window, most
troublesome is the lack of a status bar in the message find dialog box.
*When ever something happens in the background and if composing an e-mail in
html, Jaws loses focus, and returns to the window in navigation mode, not
edit mode, forcing me to alt+tab away from the window, then back again.
*Jaws inability to decipher the various e-mail addresses, assuming that one
has multiple addresses with multiple names (This one I think is a Windows
Live mail problem, but I'd like to know if it might be a Jaws problem.
*Jaws inability to use first letter navigation in the folders tree list
*Difficulty in navigating the accounts dialog box, particularly in the
accounts pane where one must use first letter navigation to move to the
account you wish to work with.

Now, This is not a comprehensive list, and are only some of the major
problems facing me right now, so if anyone wants to add to this, please let
me know. Also, if anyone has fixes for these problems, I would appreciate
knowing them also.

Scorpio
