[JAWS-Users] Skipping parts of a web page
I thought I recalled that there was a way to have JAWS skip parts of a web page. If so, how would I do that or where should I look in JAWS help to learn about it? I have JAWS 14 and I E 11. I find the imbedded tweets within news stories quite disruptive and I do not want to read them. Is there a way to block out something like that on a web page with JAWS? Thanks. Re: [JAWS-Users] Unmuting with JAWS 14
I am just using a vanilla USB Hp desktop keyboard. I have muted twice and rebooting the first time did not undue the deed. I had to get my husband to unmute with the mouse. So, if I have not invoked mute with the JAWS key spacebar s sequence then using that will not unmute? Does that key combo just mute JAWS and not system sounds? I am afraid of muting again and not being able to undo it independently if I am the only one at home at the time. If the latter, then you may not be doing the keystroke correctly, (thus my NOTE on it: The JAWSkey [or Insert key] first; then the control and enter keys together, in the three-in-one.) [JAWS-Users] Mouse over
I have been using JAWS 13 and just downloaded 14. I have tried everything I can think of to activate a mouse over link and cannot seem to do it. Unfortunately, this is a work website that requires a log in so I can't have anyone look at it for input. I tried insert Windows key and semicolon. It said something about mouse over, which I can't remember, and there was an okay button, which did nothing. The mouse over element says it is a heading. It is called Departments. I need to go from there to several other layers to see a policy. The page says this: To choose a department, just click on the drop-down box and then on the department name. I see no kind of drop down box or anything else that I can work with. Can anyone give me advice on activating something that says mouse over with either 13 or 14? I am using I E 10 if that matters. Re: [JAWS-Users] Using JART to create and save documents in MS Wordformat
I would assume this is true, but I can't verify it from personal knowledge. I have only opened Word 2000 documents with Jarte and I have not shared any of those with anyone with other word processors. I feel at this point I can use Jarte and not shell out the bucks for Word 2010. The only reason I would buy Word 2010 is if I got a different job that required me to use it for a transcription platform. I have found Jarte to be a nice program and it has saved me some money by not purchasing Word 2010 when I got my new Windows 7 computer a couple of months ago. The website also mentions that it works well with screen readers, and it is nice to see something like that when investigating a new piece of software. Re: [JAWS-Users] Freedom Scientific Reader
Miriam, I have not worked with FS Reader before. You can try this to see if you can get it on the desktop. If you have a daisy file on your computer and enter on it I think it would probably just open in FS Reader though. You can open the search box with the Windows key and type fs reader. When it shows, hit the applications key, to the left of the right control key, and arrow to send to submenu. Arrow through that to shortcut to desktop and enter. There will then be a shortcut to it on your desktop. As I said though, it may be easier to just enter on the file you want to read since the program should then open. Re: [JAWS-Users] Punctuation, jaws 13 win7, also magic 11
Thanks Rose, that pointed me in the right direction. Miriam, after reading the what's new section on JAWS 13 for the Quick Settings feature, this is how it sounds like things should work. While in the program you are interested in, open Quick Settings with insert v. Type the word punctuation. Arrow down when JAWS says punctuation and enter. Now hit the applications menu key, which is just to the left of the right control key. There are 3 choices for a persistence level in that menu. Enter on the save the settings choice. Hi all, There may be an easier way to calculate but... I downloaded DB-Burnett, Carol-One More Time- A Memoir-DB25096 from USA Bard library and it states that book is 10 hours 31 minutes. I went into properties and book is Size: 110 MB (115,449,182 bytes) My friend has a 1 GB cartridge and he asked me how many books could fit on a cartridge. 1 GB = 1000 MB I used the 110 mb but I needed to round the bytes to 116 to get a good rounded number without truncation. so 1000 divided by 116 = 8.6 So approximately 8 complete books that are 10 hours and 31 minutes long could fit on 1 GB cartridge. Or approximately 84 / 85 hours can fit on a 1 GBB cartridge if downloaded from Bard site. What I did is that I copied the book to cartridge and then renamed it 1 to 9 and copied to cartridge and on the ninth time Windows stated disk is full. At first I divided 1000 by 110 but I need to take the byte size and round up to get an approximation. of this 10.5 hours could fit on a 1 GB cartridge. Re: [JAWS-Users] Downloading from Bard with IE9?
Here is the message sent out by NLS BARD Tech Support with the subject Downloading with IE9: Those of you who have started using Internet Explorer 9 have probably noticed that downloading doesn't work the same way as it does with earlier versions of IE. The process can make you think nothing is happening, which can be confusing and frustrating. Fortunately, however, it's easy to download with IE9 once you understand the changes. When you download a book with Internet Explorer 9, the prompt to download or save appears in a toolbar called the Information bar. You can respond to this prompt in one of two ways. One is to press Alt-N, which brings focus to the Information bar where you can choose whether to open or save the file. The other is to press Alt-S, which bypasses the Information bar and chooses to save the file. Once you press Alt-N and choose to save, or press Alt-S, the file begins to download. To see the progress of the download, press Control-J to open the View Downloads dialog box. Within this dialog box is an Options button that takes you to a dialog where you can choose whether to be notified when downloads are complete. If you realize that you made a mistake and you don't want to download this book, press Alt-N to go back to the Information bard. Focus will move to the Cancel button, so press Enter to cancel the download. By default, Internet Explorer 9 saves to a folder called Downloads in your User folder. If you want to change this location, do the following 1. Press Enter on the link to download a book. 2. Press Alt-N to bring focus to the Information bar. 3. Press Tab to the Save split button. 4. Press Down Arrow until you reach Save As. 5. Press Enter. You are now in a standard Save As dialog box where you can change the file name and download location if you like. We hope this information will help you download the books you want using Internet Explorer 9. Happy reading. Re: [JAWS-Users] in the market for a new laptop
There is no difference in cost for JAWS 32 or 64-bit. They both come on the disk and your computer will install the correct one automatically. If you download JAWS from the website, you must choose the correct one. Just be careful about the version of Windows you get as some of them require the more expensive version of JAWS. I have Windows 7 Home Premium and it does not require the more expensive version of JAWS. Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS gets confused
Interesting. I know Microsoft has a tendency to become quite confusing about their program names. I see references to Windows Mail and Windows Live Hotmail, and I don't really know which program is being referred to to be honest. I know Vista had a Windows Mail program. I don't know if Windows Live Hotmail is the same as Windows Live Mail or if it refers to what I used to think of as just Hotmail a long time ago. Since I am confused myself, I guess I can understand why my buddy JAWS is too. We'll just blame it all on Mr. Gates, et al. This would explain your jaws's getting confused as jaws looks at the name of the program executable that currently has focus and loads settings/scripts accordinglyly. the script files that are loaded then internatally have a way of determining which version of a program, i.e. Microsoft Word 2003 or 2010, is being used. This allows jaws to know the differences and interact with the program as needed by the different versions. If the name of the program program executable is the same as with Microsoft Internet Mail and News and outlook Express, and, my guess is, also with windows mail and windows LIve Mail, this to jaws is the same program but with a different version number. So if jaws announced outlook Express rather than Windows LIve Mail it got confused on the version of the program you are using. I do not have a downloads folder on my desktop by default, so your friend may not either. In Windows 7 just hit the Windows key. In the edit box type downloads and hit enter. That will open the downloads folder. On my Windows 7 computer the path to the folder is: c:\users\my name\downloads. I have already begun to prefer opening things with the Windows key search box rather than having a cluttered desktop. I know it is easy enough for people to add icons to their desktop, but I am glad we have multiple ways of doing the same thing so we can each choose the method that we prefer. Re: [JAWS-Users] Windows Live Mail 2011 and attachments
Cathie, someone on another list told me how to label the graphic for an attachment so now JAWS does announce attachments for me. The latest build of JAWS 13 also announces if a message is unread, although now that I understand the graphics labeling routine, a person could label that if they are not using the most recent version of JAWS. [JAWS-Users] Attachments in Windows Live Mail 2011
Hello, I just started using this email program. I asked a friend to attach something to a message so I could see if JAWS identified the attachment. I was able to save the attachment, but JAWS gave no indication it was present. I have attachments checked in one of the options in the view ribbon. The ribbons are new to me so am still learning to work with them. Does JAWS indicate there is an attachment in this email program? Do I need to check or uncheck an option somewhere for JAWS to do this? I am using JAWS 13. Thanks. Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS 13, MS Outlook 2003, and Quick Settings
This has nothing to do with JAWS, but I will tell you why I don't have SP3 since it came up in this thread. I installed SP3 and lost my wireless connection. I researched it, but could not find how to resolve the problem. Lots of people have had problems with SP3 from what I read online. There may be a simple solution to the problem I encountered, but I don't know what it is and I needed Internet access, so I decided not to reinstall SP3 until and unless I know how I can GET online when I have it. I know it probably installed without issue for the vast majority of people out there, but I know of two other people who had problems when they installed it, and I saw lots of things online about it, unfortunately I did not find how I could resolve it. I am likely going to get a Windows 7 computer in the near future anyway. Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS 13, MS Outlook 2003, and Quick Settings
Andy, I don't know if you got the same error message. I am not recommending you do what I did, but passed along my experience for you to decide for yourself. I read on the page that you could run the file instead of save it and that is what I did because I did not know where to put the file either. After reading the error message and the Microsoft page, I decided it was worth a try, figuring I could do a system restore if I needed to. I am not an advanced computer user so wanted to be clear that this was my experience and I don't know any more than what I posted in my two messages. Do you have service pack 3 on your computer? Neither I nor the other person with the same problem have SP3. I still wonder if that is why I did not have the file, but I don't know how to verify that assumption. I will paste my error into this message so you can see if it is the same one you are getting. I assume after some discussion with others, including another JAWS user who had the same error, that I did not have a needed file, probably because I do not have Service Pack 3 installed. That is a long story that has nothing to do with JAWS. I searched for the file the error message said was missing and found it here: http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=3988 I downloaded the first file and my Quick Settings feature then worked. In addition, the Research It feature did not work for me in JAWS 13 at all. It found no results, but did not give me an error message. The file I downloaded apparently was needed for Research It also on my computer because it began to work after I downloaded the file. I am using XP Home with SP2. Here is the error message I got: QuickSettings Validation Error Internet Explorer Error gathering files to parse C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\Freedom Scientific\JAWS\13.0\Settings\enu\Default.qs Cannot use the MSXML 6.0 parser. Re: [JAWS-Users] How to work with the Notification Bar in Windows 7 IE9?
Hi, I am not using I E 9 yet, but here is a message that NLS sent out about downloading books from BARD. I would assume the process would work the same for any downloads, including book share. If this does not answer your question, I am sure an I E 9 user can give you further assistance. Joni Hello List Members, Those of you who have started using Internet Explorer 9 have probably noticed that downloading doesn't work the same way as it does with earlier versions of IE. If you want to change this location, do the following: 1. Hi folks, I am using Windows7 and IE9, when I go to Bookshare.org to download books. Everything is as normal, until I press Enter on Download in Daisy. Then the Notification Bar comes up and tells me to use Alt + N, which I do, but nothing I then do, let's me activate the Save button! Does anyone have a tip for me? I would be so grateful! I've run out of new books to read! Help please. [JAWS-Users] Research It NFL results
As others have mentioned, this does not seem to work in JAWS 13 as of last week. I am not really a football fan, but it was a nice easy way to see if the home team had lost yet again for social conversational reasons. Does this breakage result from changes on the website where Research It looks for results? Just curious as to why these problems with sports results occur. Having just migrated to JAWS 12 and 13 from an earlier version of JAWS, I will say that I do like Research It for its quickness and the ease of glancing over headlines, definitions, and other things.
