Huh. That's interesting. I've never had the "format" command not work. By
"ex" drive, you mean external, right?

Well, at least you got it now.

Well after 2 days of trying I finally called microsoft. After he explained
the process was so simple. I kept trying to use the run command and the old
dos format command syntax. It looked like it would work even asking for a
new name. Then nothing. I left it run for over 20 hours with not finishing.
After calling he told me that that will not work. I was to use windows
explorer then f6 to get to the correct area. When I found the ex drive use
the applications key. Arrow down to format and the rest was quite easy. It
took less than 2 minutes to bring my drive from fat32 back to ntfs.

[JAWS-Users] why not copy files

2018-07-06 Thread Lenny McHugh
There was a question asked about why I just did not copy the files. I have
only one cable readily available. I did not want to use my grandson’s
computer since he now just has zoom text installed. To get at his cable you
have to pull out his computer desk and reach behind to try and find the
cable where it plugs in. If I would have access to the cable that would have
been my first try. Hind sight being 20/20 I should have pulled out his desk.

[JAWS-Users] convert/format interesting

2018-07-06 Thread Lenny McHugh
Well I again tried the convert on my win 7 machine. At the top it stated
that it is fat32 and will be fat32
Using the format with f: /q /fs:ntfs
at the top of the screen it reads fat32 the next line states that it will be
ntfs
It then asked for a new name. I assume that I have to let it run most of the
night to complete. Probably 2 days when I do his 2tb drive

[JAWS-Users] my conversion idea failed

2018-07-06 Thread Lenny McHugh
I had the idea to make an image for windows backup of my grandson’s ex
drive. Then restore it to my drive before reformatting his. After a 9 hour
backup and a 4 hour restore things became worse. The restore converted my
ntfs drive to a fat32. I made the guess that it just would rewrite the data.
On my 7 machine what is the best way to format my drive back to ntfs? I did
go to run and typed format f: /fs:ntfs
It asked for a new label and nothing since. After a few hours the fat32
information is still there.
I wonder if I should have use the q switch

I have probably close to a terabyte of music on my hard drives, and I try to
back it up semi-regularly, and have never run into problems copying so much
data.

However, you can actually convert the drive without reformatting it,
apparently. I say "apparently" because I haven't actually tried it. But
Windows has a command for this. It's called "convert" and you run it from
the command prompt. So open up an administrative command prompt and type
this:
Convert e: /fs:ntfs

Where e: is of course whatever drive letter you end up with.

As I've never done this before, my instinct would still be to copy the files
to a folder on your hd anyway as a backup.

[JAWS-Users] wlm junk folder fixed

2018-06-13 Thread Lenny McHugh
At least I think it has been corrected. Not had a problem in 2 days.
The fix: I selected a different option for the junk filter. Saved the
setting and turned off the computer. When I turned it back on I selected the
correct filter where messages from my blocked sender list should be marked
as junk. Again saved the settings and restarted the computer. It now looks
like it is working.

corrected. I just went to the junk folder and there were over 50 messages
there. The majority from this list. Several were responses to one of my
queries. Not all of the responses ended up in that status. I am at a loss
why some are rejected and others are not. Any ideas?

Hi Lenny,

This is how I would do it:
1. Zip the file and place it in the Dropbox folder.
2. Highlight the file, open the context menu using the applications key or
Shift + F10, arrow down to, Copy Dropbox Link, and press enter. This will
paste a Dropbox link to your clipboard.
3. Create a new email to whomever you're sending the file to, and paste the
Dropbox download link into the message body of the email, but you're not
through just yet! We want to change the Dropbox download link by changing 1
character. Below is an example of what we're going to do. In the link
below there's a, 0, at the end.

https://www.dropbox.com/s/94btj8w58bxdzx0/Windows%2010%20Current%20Version.txt?dl=0

What you want to do is change this, 0, to a, 1, like this:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/94btj8w58bxdzx0/Windows%2010%20Current%20Version.txt?dl=1

Now when someone clicks on the download link they can choose to Run or Save
it by using their right arrow key to select the option and pressing enter on
the selected option. This way they don't have to download from the Dropbox
website and just download as they normally would.

Take care. Mike. Go Dodgers.

I don't know if this will work for everyone but I used to have the same

junk folder. Then when I saw something that was truly junk, I marked it for

Once on that second page, tab a few times to reach the play button.
I discovered something similar this morning while working with Chrome. On
another website, which requires being logged in, I pressed spacebar on a
play button and nothing happened. For some reason, I pressed tab, and
another play button appeared. This time pressing the spacebar commenced the
video.
With IE11 on this same website, a single press of the spacebar on "play"
commences the video. So, with chrome there seem to be new ways of getting at
certain buttons.

now takes about 5 minutes to start. At least the 7155 does work but did
loose the copy function.

I wish that I would have tested everything within the first 15 days when I
could return the unit. Last evening I wanted to make a few copies. That
option is no longer available using the software in your computer. It is
only on the printer control panel which can not be used by a blind
individual. In order to make copies you now must scan to a pdf or jpg file,
save it then locate and print the file.
What is worse is since I installed the printer I can no longer use openbook.
When I run it I get a message that it is not responding. I have been using
hp printers since the 1970s and openbook when arkenstone first developed the
system.

I do not understand the inexpensive sound cards. I now have to purchase
another card. I purchased 2 unnamed cards for $13 each from a local computer
store. Both lasted about 4 months with a 90 day warranty. I suspect that
they are not designed for computer speakers. I just ordered a $30 card from
Tiger Direct for $30. It has a 2 year warranty. Their shipping is very
reasonable about $3.00. I use this card exclusively for jaws. That way I can
turn the sound off until I need it for web pages.

There are actually 2 domains you can use to send text messages from your
computer with Jaws to a Verizon user. The first one is for text messages &
I don't have any luck with this one because it has a limited number of
characters, but even if I don't exceed the character count my family /
friends don't get the whole text, so I use the second one.
#1:
phonenum...@vtext.com

This second one is the domain for sending pictures / sound files, & doesn't
appear to have a limit, so to speak, & the domain I always use for sending
text messages.
#2:
phonenum...@vzwpix.com

Take care. Mike. Go Dodgers!

every web page and if you do not have it the individuals trying to access
will get a security warning. She only told me about it now before they get
hammered with phone calls about the security errors.

Hi Lenny,

With the new version of Dropbox you don't need to put files in the Public
folder any more, just put them in the main DB folder. Once the file is
uploaded highlight the file you want to send, press your applications key or
Shift + F10 to open the context menu, arrow down to, Copy Dropbox Link, &
press enter. You will hear a confirmation that a Dropbox link has been
copied to the clipboard. Now here's the tricky part, the following is for
easier downloading for the recipients. When you paste the download link
into the email, the link will have a, =0, at the end of the link. Replace
the, 0, with a, 1. If you leave the, 0, the link will open a download
window on the Dropbox website making it a pain in the A** for the
recipients, but if you put a, 1, at the end the recipients will download
directly from your Dropbox folder, is the way I understand it anyways.
Happy Dropboxing with Jaws!

free version. In the past few years I only used it twice. Once again I now

Hey Mike, thanks, It installed and to my surprise the file that I last sent

send? If I remember when I first added the file it automatically created a

detects if you are using jaws, probably other screen readers as well. Anyway
when it detects jaws a screen overlay is also displayed giving phone number
contact information for people with disabilities.
The other day I needed to call and asked Karen to bring up the page on her I

was. She since did a search and learned that it detects screen readers.
What great customer service.

Isn't this feature kind of redundant when using a screen reader?

If the information is being spoken aloud, all it does is make the screen
blank. Granted, people would have a hard time getting the information if
speech is set to a fast speed, however, if someone really wants your
information, all they have to do is record it with a recorder, then slow it
down with audio software.

iBooks, for example, has this ability, so while I can appreciate VFO wanting
to give new features, this one seems kind of redundant to me.

Just offering a dissenting voice.

I am using Windows 7 pro.

I am using Nod32 as my antivirus, but have never had a problem with that

Any suggestions as to what to try?

Thanks.

I just learned that you can suspend it within the program. If you left click
on it in the task bar it brings up some options. One is to suspend. It will
automatically come back when the computer is restarted.

Hi Lenny,

I'm running Windows 7 Pro 64 bit, & Jaws 16 thru 2018. With Unchecky
installed & running I have 2 items running in the Task Manager / Processes.
If you have it installed, & wanted to disable it you can go to,
Administrative Tools / Services & disable it there. It's set to start
automatically by default.
Take care. Mike. Dodgers, try again next year!

[JAWS-Users] computer up and running

2017-11-05 Thread Lenny McHugh
It has been a few interesting days with Microsoft support. I must have over
8 phone hours with them. They first tried to correct the network driver
issue. After several calls and attempts it was determined that windows had
corrupted files. They downloaded iso files for both 32 and 64 bit. They
wanted to try and save my programs and files but if that did not work I
could do a clean install of the 64 bit os.
It took several hours for the windows repair to run. At that time I lost the
jaws mirror driver. And I could not run the install of 2018 to correct the
problem. A call to FS and a follow up call to Microsoft I still could not
run the 2018 repair. Here there were about 175 critical updates that needed
to be installed. After these were installed I still could not repair jaws so
another call to Microsoft. She could not run it so escalated the problem.
Later that night I tried to update I.E. from 8 to 11 and could not run the
update. The following morning I placed another call to have them add I.E. to
the list. This tech asked me to check for updates. Now there were about 20
updates that were not there the night before. I installed them then he
linked into my machine. He uninstalled 2018 and then was able to do a clean
install. He also had no problem installing I.E. 11. Not only is the system
correctly reporting the network status, my one usb port now works and
windows explorer is working correctly again. I did require a lot of sighted
help. Without the mirror driver jaws could not read the list of updates. It
was recommended not to install more than 100 meg at a time and start from
the bottom, oldest first. So after 3 days and a lot of frustration from my
first call my computer is running like a new machine. I can’t believe how
fast it now comes up and launches I.E.

You can get a cheap LAN to USB dongle and see if that fixes your issue.
Or even an LAN PCI card.

[JAWS-Users] not connected

2017-10-31 Thread Lenny McHugh
In the task bar it states that I am not connected to any network. However
If you go into the network settings it states that the computer is connected

Last night I made the mistake of calling microsoft support. He toyed for
over an hour and could not correct the problem. Finally he thought that
something happened to the driver and uninstalled it. At that time a new one
could not be downloaded because there was no internet access. He suggested
that I call my isp. After he hung up I did a system restore and now can be
back on the internet however, the not connected message is still there.
Anyway suggestions on how to fix this problem?

[JAWS-Users] combofix no longer works

2017-10-27 Thread Lenny McHugh
I had to download the newest version. No matter what I tried I could not get
it to work. Probably tomorrow reluctantly I will call Microsoft.
The problem has been getting worse or as I like to say worser!
If I go down a list of my documents or a list of files in a folder or drive
I quite often get a message that my documents or drive letter is not
responding. I had this quite a few years ago and combofix was the only thing
that I could use to correct the problem. I first learned about combofix
about 10 years ago. Something got into my computer and I.E. kept taking me
to a porn site. I had the eset folks trying to remove whatever caused the
problem. Finally he gave me the download link for combofix and it correct
I.E.
That has since been my go to tool for problems that virus and malware scans
could not correct. It finally got to me when I could not totally read my
document list. I need one and can not remember what it was named. Gee, give
me back my old Burroughs 6700 or IBM 3090 main frame systems.

Try finding the executable for the app and then open properties by
pressing alt + enter. Then check the box that says run as administrator.
You may have to play with compatibility mode also. It is found in the
same place.
To find the executable: alt+ enter on the shortcut and click open file
location. This should take you to the file you need.

[JAWS-Users] external hard drive is dead

2017-10-19 Thread Lenny McHugh
Thanks for all of the suggestions. It is not worth the $599 to have the data
recovered. I tried a few programs and I do not have enough space on my
computers to try and recover the data. I located a partition recovery
program that can not locate any partition. I ran a few scan programs that
ran for about 8 hours and did not detect anything. I gave up and decided
just to reformat the drive and get errors. I called Seagate and the tech
linked into my computer to do the reformat for me. He received the same
errors so a new drive is on the way. I have a $11.95 charge. This covers
shipping both ways. I have 25 days to return the dead drive. He explained
how they make sure that any data on my drive is totally destroyed. I should
have it in 3 to 5 days for a few dollars more I could have it in 2 days.

This is not a external powered drive. It uses usb power. 3 different
computers can not see the information but now does see the drive as
unformatted.

If this is a case of your drive disappearing and reappearing, this happens
to me also, with my Seagate Expansion drive. It happens to me often.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with the drive. There is a work around,
and you only have to unplug it from the computer and plug it back in.

If you choose, simply unplug the electric plug from the back. This will
shut down the drive and force it to reboot.

The drive will reappear in a few minutes.

To date, I can't find a reason it does this.

Granted, I have not approached Seagate for a solution, but then again, if
they were to tell me the drive was broken, I would give them heck and tell
them where they could put their software.

I looked into recovery of an external drive some years ago, too, and it was
indeed very expensive. However, with that drive, there was some kind of
physical problem/malfunction of the heads, and not a corrupt partition. I
think you should definitely look for some other software that can help you,
if that's all the problem is. I can't advise as I don't really know anything
about this kind of software, but there has got to be something out there
that will work on the drive, if it's at all possible to recover your data
without disassembling the unit. The fact that they say your computer can't
handle their silly programme is ridiculous.

Not sure why but my computer now sees the drive however the partition must
be corrupted. I contacted Seagate and their recovery service on the drive is
out of my reach. For a hardware type recovery it would be $599 or $699 if I
wanted them to put the files on the drive. They have recovery software that
does not work on my win 7 machine. After a few attempts I called back. I was
told that my computer with 4gb does not have enough memory. I do believe
that a win 7 32 bit machine can only use 4 gb. I plan to call a few computer
shops for estimates.

Hi, sounds like the drive letter is not associated with it anymore.
press windows key then type disk manager. If you are using windows 10
It will change to format and bla, blah.
Now select the drive then press shift + F10 arrow down to change drive
letter. press enter. If you see a drive letter in there this is not the
problem. But it would not hurt to change it just to see if that helps.
So, you will have add If no letter is assigned or add and then another
button that is called change.
so add a letter if one is not there or change the letter if one is.
Windows wont let you use a letter that is already assigned so just pick
one from the drop down. Press ok and go back and see if it is there
now. :)

Here is the actual Windows command to clear the clipboard manually. This
command can be executed in Run dialog field, command prompt, or create a
shortcut
on desktop with same command so that can be used whenever you wanted to
clear clipboard manually on
Windows 10.

Right click on the empty space on desktop, then select new Shortcut.
Using jaws,
Desktop,
Ctrl+spacebar to unselect icons,
Now, use applications key, choose new sub menu, and again choose new
shortcut,

shortcut in Windows 10

Type below command on the location of the items of shortcut as below.

cmd /c "echo off | clip"

On the next screen give a name for shortcut, let's say Clipboard Clear and
save it.
So after typing the command you go to next
shortcut name
so you give the shortcut a name, such as, clipboard clear, or,
ClearClipboard
now tab finish, enter,

you will see the name,
Now you will see the shortcut icon on desktop to clear clipboard. This can
be double clicked to clear the clipboard.

clipboard clear icon

Test and Confirm

To know whether this method is working, simply copy some content to
clipboard and paste it to notepad or MS Word, it should paste. Now double
click the
shortcut on the desktop, you could see a DOS (black screen) pop up and
disappears (make sure it doesn't throw any errors). If this works well, the
clipboard
should have been cleared. To check this, simply paste (Ctrl+V) to the same
notepad or MS Word and you should not see any copied content now. This will
confirm that the
desktop shortcut is working fine.

For some reason people seem to be using a very small font for their

stuck with 10 to 12 font size. I'm sure this is an intentional so I don't
