Hi,
It is definitely a matter of personal preference versus what you are going
to use it for as well as what you can afford. I have a Focus 14 and I am
very happy with it. However, I often read documents with a lot of technical
words that make me wish I had a 40 cell display. And I have used the Focus
40 a few times and wish I could afford to go get one today.

I would say that it is apersonal preference.  I use the Focus 40 classic
braille display every day, and I love it.  The focus 14 fits needs of
certain people, but I didn't like it.  Again, it's a personal preference.
I'm not saying it's bad.  I just prefer a 40 cell display as opposed to a 14
cell display.

I usually Shift + Tab. If I want to go right up to the top then I tap
control + Home because once I tapped the Shift + Tab that put me at the

Another consideration is if this device will update along with the Microsoft
updates, and the gentleman I spoke with did not have that information
either.

that ultimately justifies which one would be best. I just had a similar
conversation with someone when ask to consult on the decision to purchase a
Focus display and an iPad  or wait until one of the L Braille devices comes
out.
After discussing what they did on a daily basis both for work and play, and
what devices they already owned, I advised them to wait for the L Braille
14.
I have a 128 GB iPad Mini 4 which I pay $32 a month for on my phone plan.
Eventually I will trade that in for a newer tablet. I already own a focus
display. And I like it very much. This is not my primary laptop. That is a
Windows 10 Home 64 bit machine with two internal drives and 16 GB of ram. It
is my primary home computer. I would not want an L Braille to be my primary
home computer. But maybe that is just me.
There is a gentlemen on some of the technical lists who is involved with the

ElBraille.  What would be the incentive for bying this docking station with
memory, other than size advantage?  I asked the salesman to help me
understand that rationale so I could hellp sell the idea to our agency.  He
could not come up with anything.  Am I missing something here?

There is a model for the 14 and one for the 40 Focus display. Both are
expected in the United States by the end of the second Quarter.
Another great source is the FSCast by Jonathan Mosen and Ron Miller on the
El Braille that was recently broadcast.
I do not work for VFO so I can't speak to trade in deals. However, they have
stated on several podcasts that you do not need to purchase Jaws or another
focus display if you already have them. You will only need to purchase the
El Braille itself. As for the display, there is an HDMI port which you would
use if you wish to have a video display connected.
I would love to play with one while it is connected to my 60 inch HDTV,
laughs!

Okay, very interesting.  I checked out the site, thank you.

The salesman I spoke with did not tell me that the display comes as part of
the ElBraille, thus, my questions about the cost, which leads to another
question.

If one already has the Focus 14 blue, can you purchase just the docking
station by itself?

Also, if one has the focus 40, can it be traded in for the ElBraille?

I also was not understanding that the ElBraille was for the Focus 14 only,
and I don't think my sales person did either.  I realize the device is that
new.

YouTube BLG is accessible with Jaws. I don't have a link for it but it works
very well. It does not have all the options that the one you mentioned has
but it does a very good job. It even does playlists without a premium
subscription.

Does anyone know of an accessible Youtube to MP3 convertor? The one I just
looked at had an installer that was loaded down with third party programs
with opt out options that weren't accessible, so I canceled the install.
That one was from DVD Video Soft.

Another one that I looked at from Free Make wasn't accessible.

I used to use Youtube to MP3 convertor.org but for the past several months,
all it does is throw up a message about maintenance and to try again in an
hour or so.

It doesn't have to be free, though that would be nice.

I was watching the news this evening here in Chicago on Channel 9 WGN.  They
were talking about a young man who was born very premature and without eyes.
He had an organ transplant in 2009 and made it to the ripe old age of 18.
"Make A Wish Foundation"  wanted to send him anywhere in the world he wanted
to go.  What was his choice?  He wanted to visit St. Petersburg Fl. to thank
the people at FS for JAWS which allows him to use a computer and connect
with people all over the world.  I tend to take JAWS for granted but it is
an amazing program for us.  The people from Make a Wish said that this is
the first time a recipient has asked to be taken somewhere to thank
somebody.  Andrew-you rock!

If you are using Windows 10, try selecting Windows + Tab. Then arrow left or
right until you hear Jaws say User Account Control and select enter.
Sometimes during an installation the UAC gets pushed behind after it is
initiated and you need to bring it forward again.  At least that has been my
experience. 
Once the User Account Control is in focus again you can tab to yes or select
Alt + Y and continue.

I just installed the latest jaws update. I'm trying to install malware bites
from minite. Jaws says user account control, and I should be able to tab
three times to a yes button, and hit enter, but jaws isn't telling me

but it turns out I already had tryed this setting with no result.  When I
try to mute this specific keys, for example, control key, windows key, enter
key, jaws prompted me this is not allowed since these are command keys using
in combination to others keys.


I think forgot to say, I am using jaws 17.  I can't assure if this was
hapenning in previous jaws versions, but as far as I recall it wasn't.

Hi,
That is a valid email address. It stands for Vector-freedom scientific
Optalek group. Jonathan Mosen spoke a few months ago on an FS cast about the
merger of these entities. This is just a further reflection of that merger.
Freedom scientific is still freedom Scientific. However, if you contact them
via email or phone you will hear VFO rather than FS in order to better
reflect their expanded line of products and services.

I have called and spoken with them down here in Clearwater, Florida. They
are not far from Freedom Scientific and their tech support people for the
most part are very aware of screen readers and how to give support to the
visually impaired. Two of their techs have informed me that the only major
benefit of viper 2016 Pro is that because it is largely cloud based it is
faster and leaves less of a footprint on your local machine both in space
and in resources. They said this will benefit older and slower machines.
However if you are running a jam-packed system with plenty of RAM and plenty
of HD you won't notice much of a difference if any. I called them because I
had received a coupon to upgrade and I was concerned because before when I
had other antivirus suites that moved to the cloud they became unusable. I
was assured by two techs that this was not going to be an issue that the
program itself was not going cloud based like other programs for other
companies have done.
I use Vipre Internet Security 2016 and I have had no issues with
accessibility. Although last night I did go to the support page online to
see how to do something and when I got to step nine it said something like
look at this picture and configure your computer like the picture in this
box. I'm thinking ok who thought that one up? Laughs!
I plan to call them Monday and discuss that one with them even though I
fixed the issue without the picture in the box.

Mike,
I hope this answers one of your questions. Bear with me as I am using Magic
at 24x and sometimes screen readers will read one thing when visually it
appears as something else. This is not a screen reader issue but just the
way things are coded or labeled. And I have virtually no useable vision
left. But I can use Magic a little each day. Thankfully, for paying bills
and other things where I lack confidence.
This one is for Manually Scheduling a Scan:
1. Open Vipre 2016.
2. If My Vipre Navigation tab is not selected then select that and tap
enter.
3. Tab to Manage scheduled Scans and tap enter.
4. Tab around or shift + tab until you find New Scan. Visually this looks
like a plus sign and says add new and is a button. Press spacebar and you
are in the edit scan manually. In there you can schedule your own scans by
specifying the time and type and all necessary criteria.
There is a button you tab too for done when you are finished.
If you notice only right and left arrows consistently work in touch cursor
mode in manage scan as well. But you will get more info than in Pc cursor
mode.

can navigate Vipre 2016, okay, but I just can't quite wrap my head around
setting up a scheduled scan , or getting quarantined items out of
quarantine.  I know we all have different ways of operating our own
computers, but please don't tell me I should just use the default settings
because you are doing that.

Hi,
Threat Track informed me today that they are aware that accessibility has
recently taken a hit with screen readers. The individual I spoke to alleges
that last year viper began being coded using a different programming
language and while this allowed them to improve the application, it also
made some changes that caused difficulties for the screen reader user. I
have been advised that if by phone or by support ticket on their web site I
should reference both Jaws and an individual named Ethan. Apparently this
Ethan has now been given the task of gathering information from the blind
community when an issue arises and he also attempts to provide tech support.
Like any escalation tech, the trick is finding time in Ethan's schedule to
have an intelligent discussion. Threat Track also sent me an email with
similar information and said they home that sometime in a future release
they can improve accessibility again. Good intentions but not entirely
helpful.

Usually in the touch cursor I only do what I need to do and get out. I haven't 
done much more than necessary. I simply meant that I would experiment with the 
other reading commands when not in the PC cursor and see what the advantage may 
be.

The touch cursor is how I have been doing it for months. I also use the touch 
cursor with several other applications when the PC cursor does not give me 
sufficient feedback. Since I have been teaching this method for months I will 
go ahead and answer the question someone will ask eventually. 
No you do not need a touch screen to use the touch cursor. Laughs!

I have just figured out how to get Jaws 17.0.1806, to read the status of our
w-10 updates.
Just do the following:
1. Press Windows key+I, for the settings area of w-10.
2. Press the Right arrow key or press the End key to, Update and security, 
press enter.
Now the sub category, windows update is already selected for you.
3. Tab one time to, Check for updates, don’t do anything.
4. Press Shift+PC cursor, to activate the Touch cursor in Jaws.
5. Press the left arrow key one time, Jaws 17 should say, your computer is up 
to date, last checked, bla bla bla.
6. Press the PC cursor twice, that is Num-pad plus twice, to go back to the 
regular PC cursor for Jaws 17.
7. Press ALT+f4 to close the settings area in w-10.
I hope this explains checking the status of your w-10 updates using Jaws 
17.0.1806, clearly enough for you.
Eric, from Freedom Scientific,  has already said that they will fix this small 
issue in an upcoming future update to Jaws 17.
So, thanks Eric.
In the mean time you can use the above steps to check the status of your
w-10 Windows updates.

Hi,
Until this is fixed. And I do hope this is fixed because I very much miss
the ability you speak of in the settings area of Windows 10. You can get
information even without a touch screen by using the Jaws touch cursor. If
you tap Shift + the minus key on your numeric keypad you will be in the
touch cursor. Do this after you tap Windows + I. then just use your left and
right arrow keys to get the information you need about the last time your
system was updated. When you are finished tap the minus key twice on the
numeric keypad and you will go back to your PC cursor. Hopefully a fix will
come soon, smile!
In the meantime I hope that helps. I use it often and it works fine for me.
I do all my updates manually that way.

They are standalone reading machines. They do the same thing that Openbook
will do if connected to a computer with Jaws and a scanner or Pearl camera.
I had the opportunity to see both in action about two weeks ago and I really
liked the Sara CE which I believe is the more recent incarnation of the two.
Now that Freedom Scientific has merged with Abisee Products there is another
product in their umbrella with wi-fi  that compares and I can't remember the
exact name. Ace Plus or Ace Pro. It is also a standalone model which has
Wi-Fi. 
Personally, for financial reasons, I'll stick with my Jaws, Openbook and
Pearl for now. But I do like the Sara C E a lot.

Good afternoon, Jaws users list.
For all the iTunes users.
iTunes 12.3.317 is out today.
Funny thing when I opened my iTunes today, it told me that there was an update.
I tried like usual using Jaws 17, to go through the iTunes update normally in 
which I have no issues doing to update iTunes.
Today however it failed twice.
So, I went to ninite.com and downloaded and ran it from there with no issues.
This seems to be my week with facing all kinds of issues.LOL.
Yesterday, I added some audio files to my OneDrive group download page.
Microsoft wanted me to use the groove music app to play them from OneDrive.
That was fine.
But they had a stupid ad trying to get me to buy it for all my devices.
They had a get started button, but know way to decline the dumb thing.
I had to recreate my OneDrive shared folders on my desktop giving them a 
slightly different name.
I then copied all the tutorials from the old folders to the new ones.
I stopped sharing the old folders and deleted them.
I put the new OneDrive folders in sink with my computer.
I got a share a OneDrive link for both folders individually.
I then had to switch to Jaws 16 to make changes to my Yahoo group settings, 
Jaws 17 still will not work doing this task.
Both my OneDrive group download pages are working correctly now.
Seems like Microsoft is trying to integrate all their programs together.
This is a challenge all by itself, we don’t need all the ads to complicate 
things even more.
Are any of you who are using Jaws 17 to update iTunes having any problems?

Office 365 works pretty well with Jaws. And both Microsoft and Freedom
Scientific are always working to improve accessibility with the Office Suite
since it is constantly evolving much like Windows 10. I am currently using
Office 365 Home which includes Outlook 2016 as well as Word and Excel and a
few other applications. However, these are the three I use daily and
successfully along with Jaws 17.

I live in Ontario, as for email clients I'm still trying to figure out wich
one I'm going to go with.  I have used wlm in the past, maybe 7 years ago,
not sure it's been so long.  I'm going to have a look on the weekend at the
stores to see how much the Microsoft bundles go for.  I have literally
thousands of save documents in the word format so I'm thinking I may go for
the office bundle for that reason.  I'm still debating it.  Regardless of
the debate going on about the reading/preview pain I guess I'm one of those
who uses it and I love it.  I've never had a problem with viruses or jaws
and I want to continue using it so outlook looks like the way I'm going to
go.  I know it sounds like I've made up my mind, but it really will depend
on the prices at the store.  From what I gathered my husband has no problem
spending the money if it's going to make my life easier.  Another reason why
i'm considering the Microsoft package is because I guess I will half to
spend more money but I use word in another language and I have the Greek
spell check etc.  I do a lot of writing in Greek and having a spell check is
essential. Sorry for rambling but it's nice to see people care.  Thanks for

Wow, that quite a deal you have their in Canada. What province do you live
in. I am going to move there. As far as your previous questions go have you
tried using WLM again and see if it will work for you. A lot of people use
it and as far as I have heard most people think it is the easiest  email

Thank you so much for your words of encouragement.  The truth of the matter
is that I was a little nervous about telling my story because I didn't know
how people would see it.
You know I live in Canada, and in the province I live in blind people are
entitled to free software, computers, cctv's, brail equipment, etc. for free
every 5 years, so if I really can't afford something I have the option to
wait until my 5 years is up and get everything for free.  So this so called
expert who claims to want to help blind people so much should get his facts
straight before he so easily accuses people. Anyhow I am just glad that
everyone now knows who I am and where I stand so there are no more
misunderstandings when it comes to my name.

The subject here is vipre. If you are saying the new version of vipre is not
as screen reader friendly I can tell you that it is screen reader friendly.
I have the latest version of vipre Internet Security and I have no issues
even in the advanced settings part of the application. For me the most

[JAWS-Users] copying text from Outlook 2016 to Word 2016

Hi,

Does anyone know what setting if any I need to change in order to allow text
to be copied from Outlook 2016 to word 2016. I have this issue on and off
again since updating to Office 2016 and windows 10. Yesterday I had no
problem, or the day before. However, today it simply will not allow me to
paste any text from one application to the other. I have even tried
rebooting. This constant flakiness is getting annoying. I'm not playing an
online game I'm working with people's lives on a real life project.

There is a tremendous advantage for some people to having quick start turned
off. This is a matter of opinion. Not a matter of fact. It depends on your
personal preference and how your machine performs. Personally, I prefer to
have quick start turned off and recommend it for all of my students. It
works better when Win 10 and jaws 17 needs to be rebooted according to my
opinion. That is why it is a check box and an option.

Again, there is no advantage to turning quick start off.
This is a benefit of using w-10.
For all practical purposes your computer is shut down, when choosing shut
down.
I have done this from the beginning every day when I am done using the
computer, I use shut down.
In the morning I just press the power button, in about 10 seconds or less,
my computer comes on with Jaws talking.
I then press the 4 digit pin, in a few seconds I am on the desktop.
So, I don't understand all the fuss about turning it off.
I am a big security minded person.
So, anything beyond my anti-virus, that helps protect my computer is
welcome.

Forgive me for jumping in on this thread but Kevin's instructions say you
have to turn off requiring a password to disable this.  I didn't think you
needed to do that. can someone clarify as I wouldn't want to disseminate
erroneous information but I truly didn't remember having to have done that
as I'm still logging into windows with a pin and my machines are still set
to require one but I did disable fast startup myself.

One reason is because if you are running a program in demo version, the
quick start will not set the timer back so you can use for another 40
minutes. Another reason, is the quick start is why people are not hearing a
sound when they shut their computer off or turn it back on. Also, the quick
start does not shut the computer totally down, so it is not the same as a
complete shut down. I do not like the quick start for all of these reasons.

Hi,
Office 2016 is pretty accessible with a few issues remaining as with many
Windows 10 applications. Each day accessibility continues to improve but is
still a work in progress. This in all fairness has been pretty much the deal
since Office 2010. Microsoft needs to do some work with their accessibility
driver and Jaws needs to improve on a few things which is always the case as
we live in a very complex world these days. For example, in Word 2016 and
2013 in when printing envelopes none of the leading screen readers do a
really good job with editing the return or the delivery address. However
Narrator works just fine. In Outlook 2016 none of the screen readers handle
the spell checker perfectly. That has been an issue since 2010. 
I use Word, Excel, and Outlook daily and wouldn't give either one up. I am
currently using Jaws 17 very successfully with them and although there are a
few things I am hoping to see fixed before Jaws 18 I certainly would not
hesitate to buy either one again.

There's a lot more to Office than Outlook.  And, the lower-end versions of
Office like Home and Student, or I think even Business don't have Outlook.
But, one might want Word, Excel and Powerpoint.

I don't know how accessible 2016 is in whole, although I do know that some
of it is accessible.  But, there may be certain tasks that aren't as
accessible as previous versions of Office, which are still available if you
look around.

For my two machines there is about one second difference on the SSD boot
drive on the machine running 16 GB  Ram and an SSD boot drive. There is
about a ten second difference on the 8 GB machine with a 5400 RPM boot
drive. The only time quick start comes into play for me is when I am having
issues with Jaws or office or windows itself. Sometimes I need to reboot and
the reboot does not work as it should because of the fast start being
enabled. There are times when you will find that you need to restart and
having this option enabled will complicate whatever you are troubleshooting.
Sometimes you just need a clean reboot.
I actually have more issues with starting up while having a pair of large
external drives connected slowing down my restart or cold startup than
having this option enabled or disabled. Because I have the option to scan
external drives enabled in my antivirus application, it will sometimes slow
down my startup or restart. If I unplug everything from the machine before
starting or restarting I can be up and running in seconds no matter if the
option is checked or not checked. But if I need to troubleshoot or install
something I personally want that option to not be checked. Just my own
personal preference.

off. This is a matter of opinion. Not a matter of fact. It depends on your
personal preference and how your machine performs. Personally, I prefer to

For all practical purposes your computer is shut down, when choosing shut
down.
I have done this from the beginning every day when I am done using the
computer, I use shut down.
In the morning I just press the power button, in about 10 seconds or less,
my computer comes on with Jaws talking.
I then press the 4 digit pin, in a few seconds I am on the desktop.
So, I don't understand all the fuss about turning it off.
I am a big security minded person.
So, anything beyond my anti-virus, that helps protect my computer is
welcome.

Forgive me for jumping in on this thread but Kevin's instructions say you
have to turn off requiring a password to disable this.  I didn't think you
needed to do that. can someone clarify as I wouldn't want to disseminate
erroneous information but I truly didn't remember having to have done that
as I'm still logging into windows with a pin and my machines are still set
to require one but I did disable fast startup myself.

One reason is because if you are running a program in demo version, the
quick start will not set the timer back so you can use for another 40
minutes. Another reason, is the quick start is why people are not hearing a
sound when they shut their computer off or turn it back on. Also, the quick
start does not shut the computer totally down, so it is not the same as a
complete shut down. I do not like the quick start for all of these reasons.

Yes if you have the sounds enabled you do. I have been tweaking my sounds
because I liked my windows seven sounds better and have been substituting my
Windows 7 sounds for the windows 10 sounds and am planning to create some
custom themes since Windows 10 has a few more sounds than Windows 7 did.

What is enhanced convenient OCR? As opposed to Convenient OCR? I use both
Openbook and Convenient OCR and find them both to be extremely useful. I
would not be without either one. I use the latest version of Jaws 17 and I
have used convenient OCR to get me out of a few tight spots including
reading a long renters agreement that nothing else would read that was sent
to me via PDF electronically. It did a spectacular job.
As for Openbook, I am reading my mail as well as books with Openbook and
while I have my own Openbook I am using a borrowed Pearl. That works totally
as advertised. I just forwarded someone a letter from the phone company
yesterday and they thought I copied and pasted text from the web site. They
were surprised when they discovered I had scanned a letter using Openbook
and pasted the text into an email. 
I'm looking forward to seeing what Freedom Scientific comes up with next.

Not answering your question directly, I find that Open Book is ze best
graphics text reader for me.  When I encounter a graphic-any one with text
in it - I just print the article in which it's embedded using CNTRL P and
shortly the full text comes up.  If the graphic is a part of the overall, i
just scroll to it.

Open Book is a great OCR option for anyone reading a lot of
graphically-generated text.  It also works for protected etf's. 
Apparently, protected etf's print just as any other one.

I am a happy camper with Open Book.

Many times that will be the HDMI port. Without looking I could not say with 
100% certainty, however, I have been around quite a few computers with multiple 
USB ports and if there is a port that looks a lot like a USB port it is usually 
an HDMI port.
For example, this machine I am typing on has two USB ports and an HDMI on the 
left moving from front to back. And on the right is a single USB port.  I would 
need to ask someone sighted which one is blue. Smile!

I am not following your issue. It is reading correctly for me. I depend on 
numerical data on a daily basis in both outlook, and Word as well as Excel and 
all work well with Windows 10 and Jaws 17.

I'm surprised your using Logos 3 with Windows 7. They encouraged me to
upgrade to Logos 4 after moving fromXP to 7. Logos 4 was never accessible
and I don't have it on my computer anymore now that I lost my sight for all
time. It was a shame really as I built that library up from the Original
language Collection through Logos 4 Platinum edition and a whole lot of
extras. I had close to 3000 resources in my library.

I agree it's working for me too here. And I'm not sure I understand the
meaning of the dictionary doesn't work. I've instructed JFW to pronounce a
word correctly when it didn't know how in the default dictionary and had no
problem saving and maintaining the results. If this refers to something else
I apologize in advance.

you.

That next letter is not fanatically spelled.
You have to tap your five key once again.

I was actually a bit surprised to find that I had the same experience on
this Logitech keyboard. It is not all that old, maybe two years old as far
as the model is concerned. I just bought it about two months ago from Amazon
however. And my laptop is about five months old and also works very well in
contrast to the wireless keyboard. I wonder if that has been reported to FS
as a bug yet.

CONTROL+INSERT+F  doesn't work at all on this particular wireless keyboard.

My HP 4140 has a full keyboard with a keypad.  I tried the same key
combination on that board and it worked.

 

There's no way to check for sure but that does concern me.

You buy a board expecting it to work just like a hard wired version and it
doesn't.

I am running Jaws 17.0.1214 and Word 2013.

This problem seems to happen no matter which version of Jaws  I am using.

If I use my arrow keys to read down or up line by line, many times, when I
reach a page boundary word jumps to the page following the one I want to get
too.

For example, if I am at the end of page 5, and press down arrow, word jumps
me to the top of page 7.

The only way I can get to page 6 is to use the control key with page up or
down.

Even if I use just the page up or page down keys by themselves, word skips
over a page.

I can't seem to determine if this is a Jaws issue, or if there is some
setting within word I must change.

Any help or advice great fully appreciated.

Don't know where you come up with your info here...
Unless you are using really intensive video or graphics editing programs,
16GB memory is overkill.  I don't see any reason why one would need that
kind of memory with Win 10 which is quite an efficient operating system.

Second, your reference to Dell and HP techs recommending people not upgrade
to Win 10?  There was a major update to Win 10 a couple weeks ago, so even
if that were valid after it was rolled out at the end of July, I rather
doubt that is applicable nowadays.
In looking at the article that seems to have precipitated this
http://www.laptopmag.com/articles/support-reps-diss-windows-10
it woould appear that many of them aren't knowledgeable about some of the
Windows 10 support features.

Much of the advice PC Phoneline support techs give is not correct or
current. 
Examples are in that article.

Also in my experience, there may be some driver issues; but I have yet to
run across anything that would work in Windows 8 and not in Windows 10.

continue to recommend waiting to upgrade to Windows 10 there really is no
reason to upgrade if you don't have to. If Windows 7 or 8.1 works then don't
break what is not already broken. I have very successfully helped install
Windows 10 as both upgrades and as clean installs on new machines and while
it is a good Operating Machine there is issues of accessibility that both
Microsoft and all the major screen readers are continuing to work out. That
is not a negative on any company it is a fact based on a very deep
understanding of computers as an instructor, programmer, and writer of
tutorials since  1984.
Never mind the fact that many people are upgrading only to find that they
have printers, scanners, external hard drives, and other peripherals that
will no longer be supported under Windows 10. Not everyone learns at the
same level. And not everyone can afford to replace outdated hardware just to
scan their electric bill after they get a nasty surprise from an upgrade.
I have my machines working just great on Windows 10 and for the record I
used Windows 10 the Missing Manual via bookshare. I even got my windows 7
sound scheme working on a machine I upgraded from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10
with a little bit of geeking and tweaking.
And I highly recommend that if you do not need to upgrade this minute, wait
a few months to upgrade to Windows 10. Unless you are buying a new machine.
Then by all means get a Windows 10 machine with at least 16 GB of ram and
run Jaws 17 and it will rock your world.

I try routing cursors, turning off virtual cursor, left clicking, just about
everything I can think of but the keystroke won't work to get me to the next

Due to the configuration of some newer websites with maybe too many
graphics--just making a guess--is there just no way to be able to use
buttons and therefore the inability to complete tasks on these sites without
sighted help?  I truly hope there's an answer and that it's not impossible
to use these sites independently.

Tech support centers say that the problems caused by the Windows 10 update
are double that of most other Windows operating system upgrades.
This is probably
not because the upgrade process is worse, but because people are being
forced to do it.

Hi,
I have spent a great deal of time customizing my two laptops with Windows 10 
and I have been pretty happy with the way both Jaws and Microsoft have arranged 
the Settings adjustments in Windows 10.
For example, today I received a wireless Logitech keyboard from Amazon and 
after plugging it into my hub I grabbed my Plantronics Edge Bluetooth ear piece 
that I normally use with both my iPhone and my Quest from Envision America and 
decided to see how easy it would be to pair with my Lenovo Z70 laptop. It was 
really simple and quick using the Windows 10 settings in Windows I. 
I can leave my huge 17.3 inch laptop sit in my bedroom and walk out to my porch 
and sit, or even into the kitchen and do email while drinking Coffee.

Hi group, I thought that I would share these tips with you, about Navigating 
the Settings area in w-10.

After pressing Windows key+I, You are now in the Settings area of w-10.
You are now in a horizontal list of 9 categories, this means a Left to right 
list of 9 categories.
Pressing Enter on any of these choices, will open a Vertical list of 
sub-categories, that means an up and down list of sub-categories.
The first item in the sub-categories is always already selected, this means 
you can begin Tabbing across the different Controls immediately.
If you want to look at any other sub-categories below the first one, just 
down arrow to the sub-category you want to look at and press enter.
Now you can tab across the various controls, under your selected 
sub-category.
Very important:
Jaws has a tendency to ramble on in the Settings area of w-10.
For Example:
When you select a sub-category, and tab to the first Control under that 
sub-category.
Jaws will read the sub-category information followed by the Control 
information of what Control you are on, followed by its current setting.
So, after getting use to how Jaws reads the various settings windows in 
w-10.
Press the Control key, to shut Jaws up.
Press the Insert key+Tab, To have Jaws repeat only the information about the 
selected Control you are sitting on, and its current setting.
What does current setting mean?
When you hear, Button or Button checked.
These are known as switches, Button checked, “the switch is on”, Button, 
“means the switch is off”.
Combo-box, Followed by the currently selected Choice in the Combo-box.
Use ALT+down arrow to open the Combo-box, if you want to change the choice.
Use your arrow keys to change the selected choice, followed by enter on the 
new choice, this will change what the Combo-box is displaying.
Press Insert key+Tab, to read your new setting in the combo-box, to verify 
that you changed it correctly.
When you hear Radio button, followed by, it current selected Button.
Use the up or down arrow keys, to select the desired radio button, just Tab 
to your next Control.
When you hear list or open list, you are in a list of items, use the Down 
arrow to highlight, or to read through the list.
OK, let us look at the Setting window sub-category called System.
Windows key+I, for settings.
Press Enter on System.
You will hear, Display one of ten.
So, Display is already selected because it is the first item.
Please remember when tabbing across the Settings windows, you will always, 
eventually come to a Home button.
Pressing Spacebar or Enter on the Home button, will take you back to the 
main Category page of 9 horizontal Categories.
If you tab past this Home button, you will come to a Settings Search Edit 
box, You can type in a setting you are looking for and either press enter or 
tab one time to the list of possible results.
This is another way of searching in w-10 for different Settings.
If you Tab again, you will be back to the list of Sub-categories where you 
began.

Which I entered into my desktop correctly and verified my computer with my 
Microsoft account.
However, we did not verify our laptop yet.
So, this morning when it came on, my wife could not access her email.
The reason why, was that Microsoft turned our anti-virus off, and under 
security, there was that same verify link.
so, if you do not verify shortly after installing w-10, if you use a Microsoft 
account, this same thing will happen to you.
I am not able to verify our laptop.
After spending 1 and a half hours with Microsoft, they were not able to verify 
it either.
So, waiting on a phone call, I did let them know that this verify screen is not 
accessible at all.
So, why I am waiting, I am still trying to use the Jaws touch cursor to verify 
our laptop.
Final thoughts, if you have sited help, use them to verify your Microsoft 
account, if not one of these days your anti-virus, will be turned off by 
Microsoft to remind you to verify your account.
I personally, do not like this procedure, but Microsoft says, its for security 
purposes.
Those of you, who, do not have sited help, call the above support number.
If you are using a Microsoft account to sign-in, this verification is required, 
no way around it.

I am playing with a trial of viper Internet security at the current time. It
seems to be working pretty well as far as jaws and accessibility goes so
far. There are still a few things I want to play with before buying it for
the machines in the house such as installing a program that force me to add
an exception. The only curiosity I have encountered thus far was when it
kept asking me to choose my Qualcomm Network adapter as a trusted device or
something now I can't remember the exact message. And it asked me about 5
times. Other than that I have been pretty happy so far with viper Internet
security with Jaws on windows 10.

FS definitely does advise against using Avast and with good reason. Avast
can actually block certain features of JAWS. I experienced this at my job
when an Avast update suddenly prevented JAWS from reading my Outlook email.
I was able to fix it, but I had to perform a radical uninstall of JAWS to do
so. I had to uninstall JAWS, all shared components and my user settings. I
think I may have also had to do something with the registry, but I don't
remember for sure. I don't have a choice at work, but I will not be trying
Avast on any machine of my own any time soon. They'd have to make some
changes before I'd even consider it.

I say this because FS Tech Support strongly advised me against using Avast,
due to supposed incompatibilities with Jaws.

I did use it for a time before developing some problems with my current
computer this past Summer, but again, was specifically advised against using
Avast by FS Tech Support.

I think it depends on how comfortable you are with tech will depend on
whether you need sight to update to windows ten. Last night I updated my
Lenovo Laptop running Windows 8.1 to windows 10 without sight with no
difficulties. I had one moment of hesitation when it brought up a screen
after a reboot and did not speak. I thought I wonder what it is doing now
and I wonder if it is safe to use narrator. So I whipped out my iPhone and
my KNFB reader in a totally dark room and it read the screen to me. And from
the contents of the screen I knew it was safe to use narrator to get me to
the log in screen at which point jaws kicked in. I was already running the
latest version of jaws. Once that happened I could exit narrator and log in.

I should also add that I was running on about two hours of sleep at the time
and was barely functioning myself at the time. Tonight I activated Cortana
and configured the default browser and everything is running very well with
jaws 16, magic 13 which I do occasionally use but did not use last night,
and windows 10.

For me it worked very well with all the documents I have tried so far. Although 
I was pretty tired last night and I apologize if I mixed up Adobe digital 
Edition the book reader at any time with Adobe document cloud the replacement 
for Adobe reader X and so on. I did not mean to cause any confusion on or off 
the list. 
When I went through the Accessibility Setup at the beginning I accepted all the 
default recommendations except on Screen four where it asked me if I wanted to 
Open the document in my browser. I unchecked that box because although some 
people need to open it in their browser for better performance when printing I 
do not currently own a printer and I find this option works better for reading 
with Jaws and documents. Most of the documents I have been working with have a 
lot of pictures but I will see if I can find one that is definitely full page 
graphics.

Is there something special you have to do to get the Reader DC to work? I tried 
it and couldn't get JAWS to read anything. The same document worked fine in the 
old version of Reader, so it wasn't an image only pdf. I'd be willing to try

Adobe DC latest build works very well with Jaws sixteen. You may wish to go to 
the Adobe website and make sure you are running the latest version. If you

After you have installed JAWS 17, you will be able to use the Check For
Updates feature to get subsequent updates.  But to initially install JAWS
17, you will need to download the installation program from Freedom

Hi,

I am supposed to be a little on the paranoid side and I have had UAC turned
off for two years, Laughs! I believe it to be more of a nuisance than a
security aid. If I really need to secure my computer I just lock it behind a
password when I leave the room. Which I do when I get up to leave the room
for any reason at all. However, for installation of programs sake, I don't
really have confidence that UAC is going to be of any use because if anyone
is working on my computer without authorization they will just click yes.

Hi,

I am using Jaws 15 and Internet Explorer 11. However, I surmise that these
tips may be helpful with other versions of both Jaws and Internet Explorer.
I cannot speak for Firefox, however, because I do not have it installed on
either one of my Windows 7 sixty four bit computers.

First of all, Amazon has begun to crowd it's pages with far too much
information. Between flash and graphical buttons and links it is very
difficult sometimes to navigate to the place you want to go.

The past forty days I have been updating our two bedroom two bathroom
apartment and I have been ordering items from Amazon almost every day. I use
the following navigational guidelines to speed up my browsing.

First, knowing that there will be about 350 links on the page including
pictures, I give it a chance to load. Then I press e to put me the search
dialog box. Once I type my keyword for which I am searching. For example
dining table. I give it another chance to load another page of too many
links and pictures and graphics after I have pressed enter. Now to the
individual who posed this question, I am not attempting to insult your
intelligence with baby steps. I am giving detailed instructions for anyone
who wants them but who is not as experienced with jaws or with Internet
Explorer as you no doubt are. Smile!

Anyway once this page of search results has been loaded I narrow down my
results because I am a Prime user. Even if you do not have Prime you can
benefit by the same keystrokes. I hit h2 and this will take me over to
heading 2 where Jaws will voice a selection of options that Amazon has such
as Prime  or if I do not want to eliminate Prime shipping I can further down
arrow and choose other options such as add ons  or color choices  or price
limits and so on. I can press enter on each choice and each time give Amazon
a few seconds for the page to load and then press h to cycle through my
options instead of arrowing through the very noisy page of hundreds of links
that sometimes freezes Jaws or even Internet Explorer.

Once I have found an item I want to look at more closely for example a
specific dining table I press enter and the page for that table will load
with another 200 links including pictures and graphical links. I can also
use the h to skip a bunch of amazon pushes for everything from Kindle
unlimited to Kindle fire to amazon phone etc. This will speed me through the
adds for what others who looked at this choice eventually purchased to the
reviews and the technical specifications which I really want to see and I
can go right to the combo box where I can select more than one of this item
and then arrow right down to add to cart.

This also allows me to skip their new little trick where they put one click
purchasing right below add to cart so that will get turned on and they can
sell me stuff automatically without me even knowing it if I am not very
careful.

And once I am done instead of playing around with the b over and over
where they try to sell me tons of other stuff that is claimed to be related
to what I just bought which is a bunch of crap, Laughs! I just hit Jaws very
useful Insert + F7 and choose My cart or whatever your cart happens to
be named. And then hit b and it will take you to proceed to checkout right
away. 

That will save you a whole lot of time which will keep your jaws and your
browser from freezing up with all the adds and extra links and extra
graphical buttons and ads that amazon has recently started adding.

I had that log in problem with I E 10 and an Amped 10,000 square foot Wifi 
repeater and it turned out to be a Java issue. I had Java disabled and Amped

Windows Update is the easiest way to update to I e 11. It is listed as an 
important update and usually updates without a problem. I went through 
yesterday and updated all the computers in the house except one that is

I personally use both Magic  Jaws together. I started using Magic when my 
sight was good enough that I only needed 4X magnification and no Jaws but 
became aware of Jaws both because my wife used it and then because as a 
trainer at a position I held back in 2004 they asked me if I would train a 
Jaws user to do the job in which no blind individual had ever done before. I 
taught myself Jaws 4.5 or whatever that version was called back then that 
they had in another part of the building because that was what their license 
was for and got a raise when the individual learned how to do the job and 
another raise when they decided they would keep her. I kept my Jaws skills 
honed even when the company closed that branch and I moved to another state. 
Eventually my sight dropped to the point that I moved Magic to 22X and my 
wife suggested that I add jaws to the mix. I actually have a full version of 
ZoomText laying around in a box somewhere that they sent me which I have no 
intentions of installing because Magic and Jaws work so well together. I 
still don't know why they sent it to me or how they even got my new address. 
I used ZoomText back in like 2003 before I was aware of Magic's existence 
but haven't used it since.

Allison, Ava, Smantha, and Tom are the U.S. voices. However, they are very 
expressive as was discussed in the latest FS cast as compared to previous 
versions. The direct version does not indicate caps by raising pitch like 
the expressive version. I am using Ava myself and am very happy with the 
response on my Windows 7 64 bit running both jaws and magic with 6 gigs of 
ram.
I am not up on all the additional voices for other countries but I am 
impressed with all the vocalizer expressive voices out there for everyone 
already.

I am also very happy with the first public beta so far.
It's playing very well with Magic 12 and comes in handy on all these 
overcrowded web sites today.

That is what my bank does. It gives you the option to turn off all dynamic

I specified version 1 because they came out with v 2 a year later which has 
a faster processor but a little shorter range.
I like the v 1 better. It's plenty fast enough, accessible, andincludes the 
5 gig band if you happen to have an apple TV.

current version of Office but it's a major pain in the butt. You end up 
talking to several arragont egotistical Microsoft butt holes who come

want to use 2003 in 2013 and oh my your hard drive might have failed once or 
ti=wice or you might have got a new computer in ten years. I lost my temper 
on the third guy and got the activation code for 2007 but a year later my 
hard drive failed and I'm like ok no more Office for me they aren't worth 
it. Man do I miss Excel every stinking day LOL!

Unless things have changed you will have problems installing Logos 3 on a 
Windows 7 machine. I updated to Logos 4 Platinum because when I bought a 
Windows 7 machine Logos told me my Logos 3 discs would not load on the 
machine. Some of the software was downloadable but I had added in a lot of 
books on CD that I could not use until I upgraded to Logos 4. However, Logos 
4 is still mostly not working with Jaws because of the way Logos 4 renders 
their books. I can't speak for Windows 8 though.

Hopefully Logos 4 or eventually Logos 5 will work better with Jaws and Magic 
because I need the advanced tools that only Logos can offer. Currently I get 
enough accessibility with Jaws  Magic to be able to work with the 2,048

accessibility through no fault of either Jaws or Magic. I need the highly

From the well worn thread on this subject it looks like people with 32 bit 
Windows 7 and possibly XP are having the issue and not 64 bit computers. I 
also have had absolutely no issues on any web site since the update on my 64

it is not jaws. My wife can not log in and jaws is not running. I
later want her to try and log in on her macbook. If she can not the

Hi.
Do you have another screen reader on your machine?
If so you could try using that screen reader to enter the password and
see if it works.
That will tell you if the problem is jaws or not.

no, they have been working on it and they set up the temp password. It
gets messed up from my computer to their server. They go into my
account establish a new password and send it to me. Then it fails when
I try to log in.

The problem is not at all with jaws 13 latest build. I have no idea
where it is.
I had several new ones sent and tried with jaws 12 and it failed.
Another new temp was sent to me and tried it with jaws 11. I had them
send me yet another. This time I unloaded jaws and had my wife enter
the temp password and it failed.

I highly recommend you install your hardware first. When you add new

Sometimes you need to hit Alt Tab twice really fast.  I've always had that 
problem even with XP even before my sight got bad enough I had to depend 
mostly on Jaws.  I just hit Alt Tab twice rapidly and it moves to the next 
open application.  I use Windows 7, Jaws, and Magic.

I posted about this a while back but I didn't get any response.  I thought
that I would try again and see if I can explain myself a bit better.  Sense
I have started using Windows 7, I have been having a problem with using alt
tab to switch between programs.  For example, lets say that I have open
JAWS, Excel, Word, Outlook, and Internet Explorer.  I am in Excel and I need
to look up something on the net so I alt tab over to Internet Explorer.
Now, I try to alt tab back to Excel but I cannot.  Alt tab will only go
between IE and JAWS.  So, I use insert F10 to bring up the JAWS window list
and select Excel from there.  Now that I have done that, I can again alt tab
between all of the open programs.  Is there a setting that I can change to
make it so that all of the open programs are always in the alt tab rotation?
I don't know for sure that Windows 7 is what is causing the problem but I
have used all flavors of Windows back to Windows 3.1 and I have not had this
problem before.  I upgraded to JAWS 13 at the same time that I upgraded to
Windows 7 so I suppose that JAWS could be the problem.  I would appreciate
any suggestions.

I use Jaws, Magic, Firefoxthe latest version as well as Internet Explorer 8 
and I have the same problem. On some sites the difference is so pronounced 
that I turn off magic and just trust Jaws to get things done because the 
site is a bill paying site and will time out before I find my place. I have 
had this problem on every computer in every version of Magic  every version 
of Jaws in both XP and 7 so I would be surprised if there is a solution out 
there.  Happily surprised that is LOL!

Well, I got the new computer.  It's an I7 processor with 8
gigs of ram, which were the two things I was going for.  It's a laptop.   I
decided I wanted to be able to take it with me if I needed to.  So far, so
good.  It seems to be a rockin little machine.  It's a 14 inch model, very
light and thin with pretty long battery life.

I've installed Jaws 13 and Microsoft 2010 so far.  This is my first email on
it.

There's something else about a desktop that makes it a still cool option,
they're expandible. Laptops are kind of I guess, but you can't swop things
in and out when ever you feel the need like on a desk top. Again, not

Kim, I just purchased a new laptop as I want something portable so I can
travel with the computer.  This time, I went more top end and bought 8 gigs
of memory, an Intel I 5 2430 processor (quad processor with turbo boost) and
a 7200 rpm hard drive.  I am using office 2010 and windows 7 home premium.
I wanted something that would not get bogged down when working with Word(a
memory hog) and outlook and the internet.  I can have numerous documents,
web pages and excel all opened and no slowdown.  I am a 22 year user of jaws
and have never had a computer like this and after two months, have not
locked it up.
I agree with the one suggestion that you consider whether you need the
ability to travel with the computer and if not, the desk top might be fine
as they are usually cheaper for the same capability as a laptop.  That said,
I have another 15 inch laptop that I have 4 USB ports on and I plug a
keyboard into the computer alone with a scanner and remote hard drive and
printer so that it works like a desktop but I could pick it up and travel
with it.  This laptop however weighs 6 pounds versus 3 pounds for my newest
laptop with a 13 inch screen.
Good luck and have fun getting the right computer.  If you take second best,
you will not enjoy the experience.  And I am the voice of experience talking
about that aspect of the issue.

If you get a 64 bit and can afford 6 gigs go for 6 gigs not the minimal 4. 
You won't regret it when using the audio stuff while having the 
transcription and the word files and everything else going on at the same 
time. I have a laptop with 6 gigs and a laptop with 4 gigs and both running 
top notch Ram and both running outstanding video cards but I still find that 
when I can afford it I want to update the secondary laptop to six gigs one 
of these days.

The worst thing I have seen  writing scripts is that  you can put your
script
into a never ending  loop, which will make JAWS  respond very very slowly.
You usually have  to kill JAWS and restart  it.  But then you can fix or
delete the  offending script.  Often  in a script that needs to loop a  few
times, I'll put a safety counter in  the loop and increment or  decrement it
and when it hits the limit, get out  of the loop  immediately.

Hi,  As long as you only alter or  create scripts in your  personal
directory
and don't modify anything  in the default [all users]  directory you won't
mess anything  up.
You can always roll back by  deleting the offending scripts in  your
personal
directory.
