Re: [JAWS-Users] MS office 2007 v. MS office 2003 uninstall folders

2010-03-31 Thread Sun Sounds of Arizona
You can go a couple of ways on this. If you uninstall 2003, you will not
lose any of your documents, but you will lose the program folders.
However, you can install 2007 right over top of 2003. In this way, you can
hold onto your 2003 folders if you have a wish to. You can also operate a
hybrid. For instance, I really don't like Outlook 2007. So, I installed
Office 2007, and unchecked Outlook 2007. So, 2007 is in place for everything
except Outlook which is running 2003. This works fine.

[JAWS-Users] JAWS 11 going silent in Outlook

2010-04-01 Thread Sun Sounds of Arizona
For reasons I cannot detect, and on no pattern I can see, JAWS 11
occasionally goes completely silent when I open certain emails in Outlook.
If I use the JAWS pointer, I can see there is material there and read it
that way, but the virtual cursor does not work, and the arrow keys do
nothing. Total lack of any feed back at all. Restarting JAWS doesn't fix
it. Rebooting the computer will fix it until next time. JAWS 9 does not do
this. In fact, if I don't feel like going through a reboot, I just turn off
JAWS 11 and launch JAWS 9 and it will read the email just fine. I have made
sure that the settings for JAWS 9 have been ported to JAWS 11. I have heard
at least two other people express this problem, but none of us has solved.
it.

I checked the JAWS support pages and they mention that undocked tool bars,
or large font sizes can cause this effect. However, I do not have undocked
toolbars, and when I adjust the font size it doesn't seem to make any
difference.

Any ideas?

Re: [JAWS-Users] Excel problems with Jaws

2010-04-06 Thread Sun Sounds of Arizona
Sometimes, you need to refresh the screen also. In complex spreadsheets,
particularly if you are editing a lot, the screen gets cluttered and you
need to hit Ins plus Esc which redraws the screen and often clears up these
kinds of problems.

Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] Excel problems with Jaws

A partial solution is to use goto for selecting text. Either f5 or
control-g gives you the go to dialog box. Then enter what you want to
select. For example if you want to select rows 1 through ten, you would
type f5, then 1:10. You can select contiguous cells, joining them with
colon as above, or non-contiguous cells, joining them with comma.

I would have thought that unloading and reloading JAWS would straighten
things out when you're trying to read, though. Excel is hard for JAWS,
being so densely formatted, but usually unload/reload unscrambles it.

Good luck!

[JAWS-Users] JAWS 8 and SAPI 5

2007-09-20 Thread Sun Sounds of Arizona
I am running JAWS v 8.0.2173 and I installed the SAPI voices
from Nuance supplied. However, when ever I tri to select
the SAPI voices in the Say All dialogue box in config
manager, JAWS ceases talking, and I have a heck of a time
getting any speech back. Sometimes, I'm forced to do a hard
reboot to recover. Has anyone else experienced this? I am
running a Pentium 4 at 3 GHZ with 512 MB ram, so my system
should be able to handle this.

Re: [JAWS-Users] FW: Jaws speed Rate = sighted reading?

2007-09-26 Thread Sun Sounds of Arizona
I'm curious if you actually mean your speed rate is 70% or 70 on the JAWS
scale which is around 30%. In reading these posts, I feel like this is
being mixed up by some.

One other note, it isn't just speed and comprehension which is important.
So many things we do now force us to be more and more hyped and tense. I
have found that I can easily understand the JAWS speech at 60% which is
about rate 105 because of experience and practice. However, I just don't
enjoy it at that speed. I find it makes me edgy for no good reason. If I
am on deadline, and speed is essential, then fine. But most of the time, I
find it makes my job more enjoyable if the reading speed is just slightly
faster than a good human reader reads aloud. So I'm usually at rate 73
which is 30%. When I need to skim more quickly, I prefer to speed up by
being quick on the cursor key and just plain skipping unnecessary stuff,
than to speed up JAWS to very high speeds. This is, incidentally, more like
a sighted person reads. They skip around, they skim, they do not speed read
in most cases.

Dear List

In common with I think a lot of people I have gradually increased the speed
of Jaws as I have got used to the voices at speed. This certainly makes me
more efficient.

I started at 25% which I think is default and am now at 50% which is
probably slow for a lot of people but hopefully I can still improve.
However is anybody aware if there is a known Jaws speech rate which
approximates to the speed of an a average sighted reader. I realise a fast
sighted reader will always outperform a jaws reader but not everybody is
fast.

I don't know if this information is out there but it would be kind of
reassuring to know at what rate Jaws should be cranked up to become
equivalent to an average person reading with eyes.

It is a kind of ambition of mine to read as fast as a sighted reader if
possible.

Regards

David Griffith

Re: [JAWS-Users] HP and touch pad

2007-10-08 Thread Sun Sounds of Arizona
I have an HP, and the touchpad manual button is great. It's just a recessed
button above the touch pad which is a toggle. When the touch pad is active,
it is very easy to accidentally move your mouse cursor, scroll, or even
accidentally click on something. Since the touch pad is in front of the
keyboard on my laptop, it doesn't take much to accidentally do things I
don't want to do. But pressing the button, the mouse pad is inactive and I
can't screw things up. It has no effect on the JAWS cursor which still
works fine. Then, if a sighted person needs to use the machine, a press of
the button will reactivate the mouse pad.

I am not sure why one would need to have a manual button to turn the

have thought of placing a card over the touch pad to block any accidental
activation. Any information on the manual button with HP would be
appreciated since I am looking in to buying an HP.

After opening the email, go to the files menu and scroll down until you
reach save attachments. Hit enter. Then type in the drive and folder where
you want the attachment saved, and the name you want the file to have.

This is the only way I know how to do it in JAWS 8. In this regard, JAWS 8
is a step back from JAWS 7. In JAWS 7, you could hit insert A on the
attachment and open or save the attachment. You cannot do that in JAWS 8.

[JAWS-Users] using find, JAWS gets stuck

2007-10-29 Thread Sun Sounds of Arizona
I've noticed both when using MS Word, and Outlook, that if you use the aps
find command, JAWS behaves oddly from that point on. It happens in both
JAWS 7.x and 8.x, and canceling the find command doesn't seem to matter.
The only fix I've found is to unload, and restart JAWS. Any ideas? For
instance in outlook, once I've used the find command to locate a message in
the JAWS Users digest email, from that point on, the control plus down arrow
will not move the cursor.
