Re: [JAWS-Users] page loading very slow

2013-08-10 Thread TJ McElroy gMail

Hi,

You mentioned that weatherbug.com is one of your start pages.

You also mentioned that other pages are loading normally.

If you have a lot of pages opened at the same time I guess that one would be
slow to load.

The next time this type of problem occurs, try clearing your browser's
cache.

If only one page is loading slowly, the problem is most likely not your
router.

Again some times a simple clearing of the browser's cache is enough to fix
slow loading pages.

I do not understand since I have the new router things were going fairly
good until yesterday. One of my start pages is weatherbug.com. Yesterday it
took a while for that page to come up. Today it took over an hour. Now
during that time my wife using her MacBook it came up immediately. I put
all of the internet settings back to default and still the problem is
there. It no longer takes an hour but several minutes. Other pages are
instant. Any ideas on where to look. I am using win 7 32 bit and the latest
jaws and I.E.
Now my rant, I have worked on an IBM 1400, RCA Spectra 70, Burroughs
5500,6500, 6700 and 7800 and the IBM 3090. Non of these mainframes ever
gave me the problems that these pcs do. I am convinced that pcs should be
used as doorstops.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Wildcard Searches Once More

2013-07-30 Thread TJ McElroy gMail

Hello Virgil,

Here is a dos command that will find your draft*.* files and put the
results of the search into a file named search.txt

command follows:

dir /s draft*.* > c:\search.txt

To run the command follow these steps:

1. goto start menu
2. open accesseries
3. click on Command Prompt
4 once in the command prompt:
5. type: cd\
At this point the bottom line of the active screen should
say some thing simular to: c:\>

You are now in a dos prompt or at the command prompt.
You must read the screen by useing the invisible cursur.

type the command given above:

dir /s draft*.* > c:\search.txt

## the command dir will search for the given file - draft in our case.
## adding the *.* to the draft file name tells the command to include all
files that have any thing after the initial draft: ie: draft-123.txt -
draft_shoe.doc
## the > sign will direct all of the results of the dir command into a file:
in our case: c:\search.txt

## c:\ is the root directory of drive c:

## to read your file go back to Windows and open Notepad
once in NotePad press - control o
then type - c:\search.txt at the file open command.

In an earlier note, I asked, Does anyone know how to perform a wildcard
search for files using Jaws 14 and Windows 7? I should have elaborated.

I want to perform a wildcard search to find related files, draft*.*, for
example. In Windows 7, how does one perform such a search. A friend
suggested choosing "computer" on the desk top and then choosing "Library,"
which I can't find without using the Jaws cursor/mouse pointer. What do I
do after choosing "library, assuming that's the route to take.

Does anyone have a solution?

Thank you.

Hello Scott,

I am interested in finding a remedy to your problem with Jaws freezing.

I have been a Jaws user since version 5 and rarely have any of the problems
that you have mentioned.

From the outside, looking in, I would be tempted to say that it is likely
that some thing in your current setup is causing the problem.

If every one was having the problem of Jaws freezing a couple times a day,
Freedom Scientific would be receiving so many calls that fixing the problem
would soon be priority number one.

While fixing a problem such as yours may take some time, I would like you
to email me off list, if you would.

Thank you and hope to hear from you soon.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] JAWS Crashes

Hello,

I am running JAWS 14 on a Windows 8 machine. At least once per day, JAWS
crashes. By that, I mean that it is silent and shows as not responding .
When this happens, I run Narrator, open the task manager, shut down JAWS,
close the task manager, close Narrator, and rerun JAWS. This has happened
occasionally over the years with different versions on different systems.
In the past, it happened too often but not often enough to really be a big
bother. After upgrading to JAWS 14 with Windows 7 and especially after
starting to use Windows 8, it happens much more frequently, at least once
per day and sometimes two or three times per day. If anyone has any
thoughts on making JAWS more stable, I am certainly open to suggestions.
I
suspect that nothing can be done because, as I said, I have experienced
this

problem for years on different systems so I don't think it is something
particular to my current installation. Alternatively, is there a way to
set
up a shortcut to kill JAWS when it stops responding so that I don't have
to

run Narrator to do it?

Thanks,

Scott Duck

2013-05-17 Thread TJ McElroy gMail

Hi Fred,

There is no reason to uninstall WLM - that is unless you really want to.

It might be better to keep WLM around so you can import your current email
messages into Outlook 2010.

When you install outlook 2010 - it will ask you if you want Ouplook 2010 to
be your default email client.

Answer yes to that prompt and Outlook 2010 will become your default email
client.

After Outlook 2010 is installed and configured - you can check the import
function and see if WLM is one of the recognized options.

If it is not we can google for another way to import the WLM messages into
Outlook 2010

Hi George,

Cleaning your registry is not a bad idea, but I think you have some other
problem.

Ten minutes ! Holy Cow I could almost fall asleep and forget what I came to
the computer to do, if I had to wait for ten minutes.

Have you install any new anti virus that might be running at start up ?
Have you made any changes to any thing in the last few days that might
involve scan disk or def rag ?
Have you cleaned your computer - deleting files that sort of thing before
the problem started ?

If your answer is no to any of the previous questions, I would run a system
restore to a day or two before you noticed the problem.

Then keep an eye on what Microsoft updates you have to reinstall and see if
any of the updates are causing your problem.

Re: [JAWS-Users] how to cleen start up

2012-09-10 Thread TJ McElroy gMail

Hello,

Please review the following list of Windows xp myths.
While this is not the only page that describes some common myths and
incorrect settings, it is the first one that I came across to debunk this
specific myth.

XP Myths
http://home.comcast.net/~SupportCD/XPMyths.html

Prefetch - Folder Cleaning
Negative

Myth - "Deleting the contents of the Prefetch folder improves performance."

Reality - Deleting the contents of the Prefetch folder will reduce
application launch and windows boot time performance. Every time you delete
an application's
Prefetch (.PF) file you will cripple that application's load time the next
time you go to launch it. Even though Windows XP will simply re-create that
application's Prefetch (.PF) trace file, that application's optimal load
time will not be restored until after the second time you launch that
application
and the system has been able to go idle and fully run the prefetch
optimization. Windows XP automatically cleans the Prefetch folder down to
the 32 most
used Prefetch (.PF) trace files when the folder reaches 128 files so they do
not needlessly consume space. This cleaning is only done when the system has
gone idle. Prefetch (.PF) trace files are not a cache and are not preloaded
into memory upon windows startup. They are never even accessed until you
launch
an application. Only one Prefetch (.PF) trace file per application is
created. There is never ANY reason to delete these files.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] how to cleen start up

Hi hear's instructions on how to cleen your pc including start up.
From time to time I post information that will assist you in working with
your PC. Just like servicing your car, your PC needs attention also.

Here are some recommendations everyone should do on a regular basis.

There are several things you can do to maintain your PC's performance.
These procedures should be done at least once a month or even more often
depending

on your usage.

I recommend doing them in this order.

1. Prefetch

When you launch an application, Windows XP stores that information in a
file called, prefetch. These files can accumulate over a period of time
and will

have some affect on the loading of Windows. It doesn't hurt to clean out
this file from time to time and will not affect the operation of your PC
to delete

them.

Go to the start menu and either arrow down to run or just type the letter
R.

When the edit box appears, type in: prefetch and press enter.

You will have a list of applications that you have used since you have
been using Windows XP.

Simply do a control a to select all and then press your shift delete. If
you just press delete, those files will go into the recycle bin, but
adding the

shift key will bypass it.

Now say yes to, are you sure you want to delete these files.

Finally press alt f4 to exit.

2. Disc Clean-up

Whenever you surf the internet or download files, your PC stores
information on the hard drive in a temp folder. There are other files
included in the

Disc Clean-Up which you probably would want to get rid of.

Go to your start menu, then to All Programs, then Accessories,
next to System Tools and finally to Disc Clean-Up and press enter.

It might take a few minutes for it to open, depending on if it
will compress old files. But once it does, you will probably be asked
which

Drive your want to clean. Select the C drive.

Once this is selected, you will have a list of items that the
disc clean-up will clean. These may include:

Downloaded Internet Files

Temp Internet Internet Files

Off Line Web Pages

Office Set-Up Files

Recycle Bin

Temporary Files

Web Publisher Files

Compress Old Files

Catalogue Files

As you down arrow through the list, you will notice that they may be
checked or unchecked. If they are checked, this will clean that option
when the next

Button is pressed. I recommend checking everything with the exception of,
compress old files. You only need to check this if your hard drive is
getting

Low on free drive space.

After you have checked the files you want to clean, tab to
next and press enter. You will be asked if you are sure you want to do
this, just

Press enter on, yes. It will take a few minutes, but when it is finished,
you will be taken out of the Disc Clean-Up.

3. Check Disc

The check disc should be performed before a scan disc is
performed. To do this, go to the start menu and then to, run.

When the edit box appears, type in: chkdsk /f and press enter. You will
be presented with a dialogue that says, the check disc cannot be performed
because

the volume is in use. Would you like to perform this the next time your
system starts? Just type the letter Y and press enter.

I am very interested in the work you mentioned that Comcast was working
with VR, in Georgia.

I live in Indiana and would like to share the Georgia Comcast findings with
the Comcast folks here in Indiana.

Please contact me off list:

mcelroy...@gmail.com
or
tj.mcel...@comcast.net

I think that it is good news that the ZoomText users are being given a
chance to become employed with Comcast.

With others working on the screen reader side of things maybe we will be
able to say that screen reader
users will one day be able to work for Comcast also.

Thank you for your help,

Re: [JAWS-Users] Can't edit documents in Word 2007 after having newvideocard installed

2011-12-27 Thread TJ McElroy gMail

Hello,

It sounds like the word 2007 document is not opening in: Print View.

You can verify this in two ways.

1.) Jaws will say what the document view is - when the word document is
first opened.

2.) choose view, from the word menu
then document view sub menu.
Ensure that the print layout option is checked.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Can't edit documents in Word 2007 after having
newvideocard installed

Hi folks. I just discovered a problem while trying to edit a document in
Word 2007. I’m using JAWS 12, Build 1170. When I try to navigate a
document in Word 2007 with the arrow keys or CTRL-right arrow or CTRL-left
arrow to move by word, JAWS no longer reads the text I have in focus. I’m
also having this issue in JAWS 13, which I have installed on my system.
The problem only seems to occur in Word documents using Word 2007.

I believe the problem first started occurring when I had a new NVIDIA GTX
460 videocard installed on my system last week. Prior to this, I had been
using an NVIDIA Geforce 8800 GT card with no problems. I’m using a custom
built PC running Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit with SP1 installed. My system
is a 2.4 GHZ Pentium quadcore processor with 4 GB RAM. As I mentioned
earlier, I’m having this issue in both JAWS 12 and 13 while editing Word
2007 documents. It does not occur in excel or other editing applications
like Windows Live Mail. I suspect this might be a video intercept driver
issue, but not sure.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Chris.

Hi All,

Jaws 13, windows XP home. After installing jaws 13 from the DVD and
setting
it to load up on start-up I rebooted the computer and it won't load
up.
Tried restarting a couple of times but it fails to start. However, if
I then
do the jaws unload keystrokes of alt + F4 followed by enter and use
the
keys, "control + Alt + J" it will load up. It acts like jaws is loaded
but
just not talking. I uninstalled then reinstalled from the download
package
on the FS web site but still the same behaviour.

Anyone seen this before or have any ideas as to why it would act like
this.

Many thanks,

Paul.

Re: [JAWS-Users] How to decrease time for JAWS to respond

2011-07-09 Thread TJ McElroy gMail

Hi,

I have been listening to the advice given for this problem and would like
to throw in my 2 cents worth.

While check disk and adding more ram are certainly good for almost any
computer, because the problem is being experienced on both her laptop and
desktop computer, suggests that it is a program that she has running on both
computers or a configuration setting shared by each system that is causing
the problem.

The first place I would suggest to look at is the task bar. Look at the task
bar and see if:

a. How many programs are listed
b. Which programs ( if any ) are running on each system.

The next place to check is the startup folder >startmenu>programs>startup
and see what programs are starting for each computer.

Once you have narrowed the programs that are running on both systems, you
will be able to disable each program in turn to see if you get any relief
from the slowness of Jaws.

Another culprit might be your anti virus program or the windows indexing
program.

Again, adding ram and def ragging are valid steps, but because of the
problem being on two different systems, used by the same person, suggests a
program that is running on both systems or a configuration setting that has
been applied to each system.

TJ

If your client is using Windows 7 and Jaws, she will not need a cd-rom

Windows 7 has a very good and highly accessible burning program built in.

To access the burner in Windows 7, high light a file to be burned to a cd.

Press shift-f10 and cursor down the options. One will be send to.
Open the send to menu and choose the cd - dvd writer that is listed.

An example might be: DVD Rw (d:)

A wizard will appear and guide you thru the burn / write process

Hello Marilyn,

Dec-Talk Express is an external voice synthesizer.

Back in the day, before screen reading programs like Jaws were able to use
the computers sound card for use with software voice synthesizers, an external
voice synthesizer like Dec-Talk Express or Double Talk ( another external voice
synthesizer ) were the only way to go.

There were also internal voice synthesizers, a card that was added to the
inside of the computer, but an external synthesizer allows you to be able to
have voice on more than one computer.

Huh, strange. I'm using a external Dectalk serial synthesizer with Jaws 12
Beta as I type this. Look in your Jaws utilities, synthesizer and Braille
manager. I don't, of course, have serial ports on this modern PC, so I use
a USB-to-serial converter, but as far as Jaws is concerned, it is a serial
  synthesizer running on comm3.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Populating problem

2010-09-02 Thread TJ McElroy gMail
Hello William,

Your message did not mention the name of the global address book that you are
having trouble with.

However, I do have an idea of what you can do. Open your favorite text
editor. Open the global address book that you are having trouble with and copy
one of the addresses, then try to paste that address into a text file.

This should let you know if it is allowing Jaws / your system to copy and
paste the address.

While I was in school, they switched to an online email program. Whenever I
tried to copy the instructor's email from the message, Jaws would read that the
address was copied, but when I pasted the address there was always extra data
in the pasted address.

As a work around I always pasted the address into a text editor to clean it
up before I used it in the email program.

If you have to cc many different people, it may be helpful to copy the
address one by one paste them into a text file, clean them up and add the comma
separating the addresses and then paste them all at one time into the intended
message.

HTH,

TJ

All: Sometimes it's very important to list an Email address either
on the To line, or the CC line here. We have a global address book, from
which you can draw Email addresses for individuals with which you have not
previously communicated. For some reason, I cannot get the CC field to
populate with addresses drawn from this global address book or if it is, JAWS
won't read it. The field populates fine if I use addresses from my personal
address book. Anybody else having this problem and what's the fix if you
  know.
BTW, I'm using a fairly current version of JAWS 11.
Thanks in advance for any ideas.

Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS takes a long time to startup

2010-08-24 Thread TJ McElroy gMail
Hello Francis,

One thing you can check for is how many or if there are any new programs that
are starting at start up.

The first place to look might be the Startup folder in the All Programs list.
Another place to check is the MsConfig command and look under the StartUp tab.

You can run this command from the run box under the start menu.

Type msconfig in the run box and wait a moment, a window will appear with
tabs across the top. Tab until you hear Startup.

This is a list of all of the programs that start when your system starts up.

Be careful not to change anything unless you know what the specific programs
does.

I have trimmed my list down to three items.

[JAWS-Users] Balloon Hotkey

2010-08-17 Thread TJ McElroy gMail
Hello Brad,

One approach to your read balloon hotkey might be to build a frame to speak.

It would require that the text or balloon that appears would have to appear
in a similar part of the screen every time. You could then create a frame to
read that area of the screen and use a hotkey to read the frame.

I have not created a frame in a while, but if I remember correctly it is not
to difficult.

Especially if you are going to call tech support anyway, you could have them
or some one else to help you create the frame.

Just a thought

Re: [JAWS-Users] create text file for OE address book

2010-08-07 Thread TJ McElroy gMail
Hello Ann,

If you have Microsoft Excel you can export your Outlook Express Address Book
as a comma separated value ( CSV ) file. Then open the .csv file that you
created and load it into Microsoft Excel. Next save the Excel file as a
Microsoft text file. This will produce a text file with each address on it's
own line.

Again here are the steps:
1. Save the address book as a ( csv ) file
2 Load that file into Excel
3. Save that file as a Microsoft text file
4. Open the new text file in your text editor and smile

If you need help ask and I might be able to help further.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Free DAISY creation program?

2010-08-06 Thread TJ McElroy gMail
Hello Chris,

Sorry it took so long to get an answer to your question.

I was also instrested in converting text to Daisy and here is a free and
quite easy to do just that.

It will require three downloads:
1. Open Office portable
2. Open XML to DAISY
3. Open XML to DAISY manual

I am using the portable version of Open Office because I was unhappy how the
normal install version slowed down my computer.
The conversion still works with the portable version and you have the added
bonus of being to save every thing on a USB drive.

You should read the manual for the step by step, but
in a nut shell here is what to do.

1. install Open Office
2. unzip the Open XML to DAISY plug in.
3. Start open office
4. navigate to the Tools > Extension Manager >
5 Add > Odt2DaisyAddOn.oxt ( located in the file that you unzipped earlier )
6. Restart Open Office

Once you restart Open Office there will be an export to Daisy option under
the files menu.
When that option is selected, it will prompt for a file name, then a screen
will appear telling you of the data that will be stored in the Daisy document.
you will have to choose ok from this screen.
Ok and cancel are located at the bottom of the screen
This screen does not speak for me, maybe it will for you.

The first Daisy book conversion might give a message that the Daisy Pipeline
was not found. This message has only appeared once for me. A light version of
the Daisy Pipeline is part of what you added to Open Office.

After the conversion you will have three folders under the filename that you
choose to save the Daisy document as.
An audio book
a Daisy book
a z3986

I do not know what the z3986 is, if you find out let me know.

I have given the download urls below:

OpenOffice.org Portable | PortableApps.com - Portable software for USB drives

Download Open XML to DAISY XML Translator from SourceForge.net
http://sourceforge.net/projects/openxml-daisy/files/DAISYTranslator%20Word%20Add-Ins/Release%202.1.1/DaisyTranslator_WordAddin_24March2009.zip/download

Those voices - kate & Paul - are SAPI5; so you'd find them under SAPI5
once installed. have paul speaking, and then make him be the default in
  JAWS basics voices submenu etc.
