[JAWS-Users] JAWS SMA May Cost Less for Some
Hi Everyone, Have you listened to FSCast 94 where Eric and Jonathan talk about the revisions to the home and professional versions of JAWS? They mention if you have a personal computer at home you would be eligible to use the Home SMA and would not have to pay for the Professional. The way I understand their description, if you have a computer/laptop from an employer or from a school, that is where the SMA would have to be the professional. This difference is going to help many people save money if they would fall under the Home SMA description... The FSCast 94 is at: http://podcast.freedomscientific.com/FSCast/episodes/FSCast094-JAWS_16_New_E ditions.mp3 If the link does not work, go to www.freedomscientific.com and click on the fscasts link and look for episode 94. Sent: September 13, 2014 7:59 AM To: Jaws-Users List Subject: [JAWS-Users] J16, New Features JAWS Command Search, a Built in Search Engine for JAWS Keystrokes JAWS provides many keystrokes to perform a variety of commands. Many commands can be performed anywhere in Windows, such as reading the window title or current line, while other commands are only available in specific applications like Microsoft Word or Internet Explorer. If you are using JAWS with a refreshable braille display, there are even JAWS commands that can be performed using the controls on the braille display. To search for JAWS commands, press INSERT+SPACEBAR, J to open the Search for Commands dialog. While there are certain commands that are used by the majority of JAWS users on a daily basis, such as reading the current line (INSERT+UP ARROW) or reading the current window title (INSERT+T), there are numerous commands that even the most experienced users do not use regularly and need to be looked up. Certain types of commands can be especially difficult to remember as some of them require pressing several keys at once. The JAWS Command Search feature enables you to enter a full or partial description of a command whose keystroke you do not remember. JAWS will display all commands that match your search criteria, the description of the feature, and all the associated keystrokes, including braille commands if a refreshable braille display is currently connected. For example, you may need to locate a keystroke for working with formulas in Excel. Instead of opening the JAWS help topic for Excel and searching through all of the available keystrokes, or starting Keyboard Help (INSERT+1) and pressing various keystroke combinations until you find the correct one, you can open the Search for JAWS Commands window while focused in Excel, type formulas in the search edit box, and then view a list of all keystrokes related to working with formulas. Similarly, if you are browsing the Web and you need to find the keystroke for displaying a list of headings on the current page (INSERT+F6), you can open the Search for JAWS Commands window from Internet Explorer or Firefox, type list headings in the search edit box, and this command will be the first result. To search for a command, press INSERT+SPACEBAR, followed by J, to open the Search for JAWS Commands window. Alternatively, you can choose Search for Commands from the Run JAWS Manager dialog box (INSERT+F2) or the JAWS Utilities menu. An HTML window opens and places you in an edit field. If Forms Mode is set to Auto or Semi-Auto, Forms Mode will be activated when the edit field gains focus. Begin typing the description of the command you are looking for and the results area in the lower part of the window automatically updates. As you type, the first result in the list is spoken automatically. Pressing ENTER turns off Forms Mode and places you on the first result. Note: If Auto Forms Mode is set to Manual, you will need to first press ENTER to activate Forms Mode before you begin typing in the edit field. Since this is an HTML window, you can use standard reading commands to review the search results. Each command name along with the most common keystroke used to perform it is displayed as a heading so you can quickly move between results using the H and SHIFT+H Navigation Quick Keys. When you locate the command you want, press DOWN ARROW to move to a brief description of what the command does, and any additional keystrokes that can be used to perform the command. This will include non-layered, layered, and braille

Mike, What you need first is to make the drinks on that iBarstool a little stronger and you'll find the keys work with the tilt you'll have (smiles!). Let me add just one thing that I think Mario brought to our attention and I looked a little further into maybe what he tried to say. The Alt, Control plus Page-Up and the Alt, Control plus Page-Down do the temporary speed change as noted. Actually if you use the Windows Key with the Alt, Control plus Page-up or the Windows Key with the Alt, Control plus Page-Down this is what will do the permanent speed change on the fly. Re: [JAWS-Users] can the 20-digit authorization be retrieved without using a disc
Some of us Old Time JAWS Users, I go back to JAWS 2.0, did not have an authorization disk. In the old time, my JAWS came on a 3.5 floppy disk and had recorded cassettes for the tutorials/training. If I remember, there was either a file on another disk I received or a braille or print of the authorization key and maybe I created the braille. Why this history? Well, whenever I upgrade my version of JAWS, I have to look up my authorization and type it in. One other laugh to some, I still use my Braille-n-Speak 2000 and that is where I keep my key (smiles). Without such an Authorization Disk, you have to type in your 20 digit key whether loading JAWS from the DVD or the download method. David and Stanley, We, the longtime JAWS Users, got the JAWS floppies in a very eloquently designed plastic or vinyl packaging that was very well presented. The floppies securely were separated and placed into separate pockets for each disk. This must have been expensive but a good eye catching promotion for the sighted whom we worked with or the people who saw our software and training tapes. Hi Scott, I haven't noticed anyone addressing the basic point to using your Caps Lock on a laptop. Have you set your Use Keyboard Layout to Laptop? From within the Option menu in JAWS, press enter on the Basics... Tab down approximately 7 times until you hear Use Keyboard Layout. If you do not have the Laptop chosen, this is where you need to change to make the Caps Lock work. You can save it in 2 manners at this point. As the Okay is the default, you can hit enter or press tab until you hear Okay and then hit enter. FYI, even if you now use a USB Keyboard with your laptop, the Caps Lock will continue to work as another JAWS Key. The Insert Key will continue to work also as the JAWS Key... HTH... Press the tab key about 13 times (in MS Outlook until you hear Hyperlink Button. If this comes up as unavailable, your format is set to text and you are not able to insert a hypertext link. This may be also turning off your http (links) from your reading them as a link. This is the best reason to use your email set to HTML, Hyper Text Mark-up Language. I will add changing the format to hypertext. 4. When you found the Hyperlink Button, press enter 5. You will hear something like: Insert Hyperlink. Address: Edit 6. You can now type in the Website 7. Hit the tab key and press enter on the okay You should now see the link in the document. The m.thruoureyes.org with this method is m.thruoureyes.org If you noticed, the second read of the m.thruoureyes.org also said Link. To change from text to hypertext: 1. Press the Alt Key Right arrow to Format Text Tab 2. Tab down 6 times or until you hear Format Group Box Arrow up to HTML Button Pressed, the text does not give you insert
Re: [JAWS-Users] Windows 7 login glitch
Michelle, A shortcut you can do when the Windows music sounds are heard, you can actually type your password and hit enter at this point. Personally I wait a second and then enter my password plus hit enter. This will remove your trying to figure what is focused on. Also, most of the time the password field is in focus so you could just type in the password when JAWS speaks. If you really want to read the current line, do the shift tab back to your computer name and then tab back to the password field. This may also give you comfort in believing you are really at the password field to type. Regarding the User Account setting, I leave mine most secure (100 percent) and have had no issues with JAWS running. I looked under the User Accounts Help and copied the following: Note If you're using an accessibility device, such as a screen reader, we recommend that you choose either the Always notify or the Default - Notify me only when programs try to make changes to my computer UAC setting. Assistive technologies work best with these two settings. The transition has been fairly smooth apart from the whole virtual ribbon scene, but I have encountered one glitch I could use some guidance on. I have opted to have set a password for logging onto Windows. Jaws will announce itself ready for action after the windows music sounds, but won't always focus properly on the password field of the login screen. Sometimes it will simply say logon dialog without allowing me to type anything into it. Other times it will go straight there and all will work perfectly. What strikes me is odd is that Jaws will then announce itself as ready a second time once I have managed to log in successfully. Is there a setting I should know about to eliminate this issue? Also, just wanted to confirm my suspicion that jaws works infinitely better when the user account control is set to 0...is that right? Re: [JAWS-Users] Changing Read and Unread status on Outlook 2007 with Enter, not arrowing
Siew, I am using MS Outlook 2010 but understand 2007 and 2010 are close. In the File Menu, I have found a setting that may work. I have picked Options. The Options opens with General and I then move to mail, the first arrow to the right. Now you have to tab until you find Reading Pane, again this is what I find in MS Outlook 2010. Hitting enter, you find options of Mark items as read when viewing in the Reading Pane, Mark items as read when selection changes and Read with single key of space bar. To have my mail only show of being read when I open the message, I have unchecked each of these items and then hit the Okay button for the Read Pane and then also hit the Okay for the Mail Category. I hope this is close to what you find in Outlook 2007.. FYI... The same Reading Pane is available in the Advanced Category and offers the check-boxes which can be Unchecked to allow you to make something read only when it is opened... Re: [JAWS-Users] braille and speak
David, The BNS200 can change how the file is treated by the way the file is named. You have gotten this idea from some of the responses. The way to do this is: 1. Open the Options with a Control O. I'll not guess you know, so the space bar with the Braille O will perform the Control O. 2. Press the F key to open the file menu. If you were in the phone file, you should be pointing to it. You can verify with the Control C (Say Line) or Control 5-6 (Spell Word). 3. Press the Control R to Rename. I will guess your file is phone without any extension. Now, after pressing the Control R, type in the name of phone.txt and press Control E (enter). This will now have the BNS treat the content of the file as Grade 1 text. If you had an extension, i.e. if you were using the default file of phone.brl, let me know and I will help as this will have to work differently. All other files will be assumed to be Computer braille.) so if your files have no extentions they are considered grade 2 braille. if you have the extention of .txt that should be considered computer braille.
