Hi Cher,

Thanks for the update. Are you using JAWS 18 or 2018? I was still seeing this
behavior as late as last week, but I have been switching between 18 and 2018
and now can't remember which one I was in when it crashed.

Thanks again.

Follow-up for Pam-

With the latest IE11 and the May update for JFW, I can now maximize the
window without IE crashing. When we had this conversation a few months ago,
IE was crashing when I tried to maximize at least frequently, and possibly
always.

Cher,

Are you running ZoomText by any chance?

I have narrowed this down to appearing to be a ZoomText issue. If I close
ZoomText, I can maximize or minimize windows in IE 11 without any issues.

I have noticed issues with maximizing the window if I am in IE 11 also. For

I am running JAWS 18 and ZoomText 11 on Windows 7.

I'm having the same experience: Typing "list" into the JAWS quick settings edit
field produces no results. I did the same in the JAWS settings center, where I
get five unrelated results. In both cases, I did so in IE and Firefox. windows
Win7, JAWS 2018 ( current release). I'm wondering if some other setting is
preventing this option from appearing in certain systems.

Hi Mike,

Did you type, list, into the search field of, Jaws Quick Settings, or the
search field of the website? If you typed, list, into the search field of Jaws
Quick Settings you need to arrow down after a few seconds of typing to get the
results.

Try the following to see if it'll do what you need:
While on a webpage open Jaws quick settings with, Insert / Jaws key + V.
Type, List, into the search field and wait for the the results to populate.
Arrow down to, Lists identify Show Start and End, checked. Uncheck this box,

Hope this helps.

There are a couple things you might want to try.

First, instead of using CTRL V to paste the text try pressing the
application key, use down arrow to the paste options menu item. Use right
arrow and press enter key on the option to keep source formatting. If that
doesn't work due to your settings in Word or Outlook, try pasting using Alt

Hello Loy,

The following applies to a desktop configuration. Keystrokes will be
different for a laptop configuration. In the Hotkey Layout menu found under
the ZoomText Application menu there is an option for explaining the
keystroke differences between the desktop and laptop configurations.

1. With Fusion already opened move into the Fusion window either by using
Alt with tab key or CTRL with caps lock and U. If using the mouse just
double-click the Fusion item on the taskbar.
2. Click on the Reader tab at the top of the fusion window. If using the
keyboard use CTRL with tab key until the Reader tab is in focus.
Tab to the spin box where you can adjust the rate. Up and down arrow keys
adjust one percentage at a time.
3. Use the OK button when the rate is where you want it.

There are a couple ways to save the changes so that your new settings load
each time you start Fusion. To save your changes as default settings:

1. Click on the ZoomText application menu button. If using the keyboard
you can use up arrow until focus is on the tabs and use left arrow until you
find the button. Use down arrow to open the menu.
2. Use down arrow to the configuration menu and then right arrow into the
submenu.
3. Choose Save as Default from the submenu.
4. When you click or use the enter key on Save as Default you will be asked
to confirm. Either click on Yes or tab to the Yes button and press
spacebar.

If you want Fusion to always save your changes you can do this by using the
ZoomText application menu button again, using down arrow key to the
Configuration menu, using right arrow into the submenu and pressing enter
key on the Program option.
Tab across this window and you will find a checkbox to save your settings
automatically. Use spacebar to check it or click it with the mouse.
Click OK.

In the desktop configuration you can temporarily change rate of speech by
holding down Alt key with caps lock key and pressing the up or down arrow
key.

Take care.

2018-03-06 Thread Ekstrand, Pamela A. -ND
Hi,

I have Fusion, but for the time being, I am running JAWS and Zoomtext
separately. This is because when I run Fusion from the logon screen, and even
for the first time after a reboot, I am getting a "Comm Initialization Error"
message, which is supposed to be fixed sometime this month, according to VFO.

I would think that when you run Fusion, it would be using the same copy of JAWS
as you use when you run JAWS by itself. Or are you running a different version
of JAWS from prior to installing Fusion?

By any chance, is Fusion running with the reader option in addition to the
magnifier option, instead of running JAWS?

Do you know how much memory you have? When I was trying to run Fusion on an
older computer with 4 GB of memory and a slower processor, it was extremely
slow. I am now on a PC with a faster processor and 8 GB of RAM, and Zoomtext
and JAWS are running with better performance.

Are you running ZoomText by any chance?

I have narrowed this down to appearing to be a ZoomText issue. If I close
ZoomText, I can maximize or minimize windows in IE 11 without any issues.

Re: [JAWS-Users] migrating to a different web browser

2018-02-24 Thread Ekstrand, Pamela A. -ND
Adrian,

I most definitely agree with you that the number of combinations we have to go
through sometimes to get the results we need can be very frustrating,
especially when it is necessary to get something done quickly. As you brought
up, I had forgotten the need to sometimes go back to prior versions of JAWS to
get something done. There is a website I need to go to weekly to fill out my
timesheet, and it has a checkbox which needs to be checked that JAWS 18 does
not seem to recognize. I have to load JAWS 17 in order to be able to check
this box. Having to have all of these tools gets kind of crazy, but seems to
be necessary these days.

Subject: Re: [JAWS-Users] migrating to a different web browser

I agree that it's necessary to have all three browsers installed, but this
increasing complexity is a little nuts. People are suggesting that we should
also have the two screenreaders, JAWS and NVDA, on board, which I do. But that
means we may need to try six combinations before we can access certain
websites. Then there's the question of which version of JAWS will work.

To give an example, a certain website I use is accessible to IE11, but it moves
painfully slowly after the log-in page. Chrome gets to this page right away,
but later there's a critical page on this same website that Chrome can't even
open.

For a while, I was trying to access this website with Firefox, but Firefox
couldn't locate the edit fields for the username and password fields, and so
obviously I couldn't log in. Then, on a whim, I switched from JAWS 2018 and 18,
which I already need to alternate between, to JAWS 17. Lo and behold, the edit
fields appeared. After that, Firefox and JAWS 17 seem to move seamlessly
through the entire website.

This is a website that requires logging in to test, which is why I'm not
posting the address.

The amount of time and distraction involved for screenreader users in working
on the Web lately is getting ludicrous. Maybe VFO's efforts to work with MS on
Edge will bring us back to a single universal browser. Until then, the lives of
screenreader users are complicated. My ambition is to work as fast on a
computer as fast as a non-techy sighted user, but all this
browser/screenreader/version number switching is an obstacle to fast,
distraction-free browsing. I can't imagine what it's like for a new
screenreader user.

I couldn't agree more with having multiple browsers. There are certain web
pages that just don't work well with a certain browser, but will work much
better with another.

I have Firefox, Chrome and IE on my PC and use them all depending on the
circumstance. I also have NVDA in addition to JAWS, for the same reason.

The more tools available, the better, in my opinion.

HI.

My primary browser is Firefox and has been for the last few years. I also
have Chrome on this machine and have used it a little. They both work well,
but I'd still give the edge (hah) to Firefox. I think Chrome support has
gotten really good in JAWS 2018, latest build. I do not have this. The
Firefox interface is a little more like that of iE, so you would probably
find that switch simpler. But really, there's no reason not to have both on
your machine. Keep your options open.

Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS, ZoomText and Fusion question

2018-02-22 Thread Ekstrand, Pamela A. -ND
Hi,

So far, I have not found this to be the case. I have given up on Fusion for
the time being, as it will not start up when I try to run it so it comes up at
the logon screen. I get a "Comm Initialization Error", which is supposed to to
be fixed in an update coming out next month.

For now, I am running JAWS and ZoomText separately. Even running it this way,
the latest ZoomText crashes on average twice a day. Sometimes I have to reboot
to get it started again, and sometimes I can just restart ZoomText. I am
hoping the next update will also fix this issue.

Do you have issues with ZoomText crashing? I am on Windows 7, 64-bit.

Windows Defender for anti-virus. Free version of MalwareBytes for
anti-malware.

Defender is already built into your Windows 10 and probably good enough for
your purposes. It's less annoying than free AV out nowadays, which is always
full of ads and hardly ever great from an accessibility standpoint. And it
does detect a lot of stuff. Arguably, too much. But you can exclude areas of

I guess the good news is that, if it's MSN, it's not the type of ad-ware
that will be stubborn about not letting itself be removed.

I wasn't even aware that MSN was still a thing.

The utilities from Sysinternals can be really good for dealing with unwanted
processes. In addition to Process Explorer, a faster and more robust
alternative to Task manager (faster with JAWS, at the very least), there's
Autoruns, which lets you examine every kind of startup item and remove it if
necessary.

David, I would probably start by checking what's set to start when Windows

Odds are, she's possibly said yes to something, or clicked on something she

Hi, George.

I don't have an answer to your specific question, but I do have some thoughts.

First, once you've opened the page, try F5 to reload it and JAWS key+escape to
refresh. These two steps should ensure the page is stable.

You might also maximize the page with alt-spacebar followed by x.

You mention tabbing to get to the edit field. Tabbing will put you in the edit
field only if you're already in another edit field.

Finally, have you tried accessing the edit fields with another browser? I was
having a similar problem, only the reverse of yours. On a certain website, I
couldn't get into an edit field with IE11, but I could get there with Chrome.

Alt O, then C, then W will give you an edit field where you can change the

Hello,

"Alt, then c then w then a for auto adjust." Doesn't work for me.

This is how I do it.

Hit Control+SpaceBar to select the entire column
Hit Alt+h for the Home menu
Hit down-arrow until I hear "Cells"
Hit Right arrow to open the "cell" sub-menu
hit down-arrow until I hear "Format button dropdown Has Popup"
Press Enter to open the popup
Press down-arrow until I see what I'm looking for.

Column Width for a fixed column width or Auto Fit Column width.

Re: [JAWS-Users] ZoomText Fusion List

2017-12-22 Thread Ekstrand, Pamela A. -ND
Yes, I have noticed the lack of tracking more on websites than when I am in a
document.

The other thing I am noticing when running JAWS 18 and ZT 11.7 together is that
sometimes if I am in notepad, for example, JAWS will read words from other
windows I have open, mixing those with what is actually in the notepad file.
If I alt-tab out of the window and back in, and/or maximize the window again,
this temporarily clears up.

I will probably need to call VFO again. I wanted to see how things were
running for a few days before I call them again. I haven't tried using Fusion
again since I last talked to them.

seems to follow the focus of what Jaws is reading. It seems it is worst now

Hi Pam,

I have not experienced the issues you described. I am running Windows 10 and
all appears to be working as it should... mostly.

Here is how I have my ZoomText Fusion configured:
Only JAWS starts when I start my computer.
When I want the magnification portion of Fusion to be launched, I press
Control+Alt+Shift+Z.
I have both JAWS and ZoomText run from the system tray and the ZoomText
window starts minimized.
Because for now the individual components of ZoomText are updated
independently, I am running JAWS 2018 and Fusion 11.7. In fact, if you have
not updated to version 11.7 of Fusion, this may help. The reason I say that
all is "mostly" working as it should is because I have found that I can not
use the screen feature of JAWS 2018 if magnification is enabled, and of
course this makes perfect sense.

I hope some of my configuration info was of at least some help.

6 or 7 years ago I was using Zoomtext and began using JAWS at that time but
had to give it up as the two programs fought with each other. Freedom

ditched Zoomtext and went to MAGic. My problems were far less with MAGic.
I may have to think about my decision to switch to Fusion.

I have also recently seen this behavior in edit fields on certain websites, and
I have not yet updated to the most recent version of JAWS 18.

An example of this was when trying to enter my user id and password on the
United Healthcare website.

I will need to try NVDA the next time I encounter this and see if I have any
better luck than with JAWS.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Fields on web site not activating

Hello all,
This week I updated my JAWS 18, also using Windows 10 Creators. Default
browser is Chrome.
Today I went onto GoToMyPC to check a connection and heard TWO little pop
sounds when I arrived. That sound is the one I usually hear when a data
entry field is open & ready.
When I looked with MAGic my cursor is blinking in the data entry box but no
entrhy is possible. I cannot TAB or Shift TAB nor does hitting enter work.
I thought it was an issue with Chrome so I pulled up Firefox and it gives me
a funny message about my screen reader and needing to upgrade to their new

Hi,

In addition, another alternative for starting JAWS is to press the windows key

whatever version you are using.

Hi, When you are at the Desk Top, arrow to the Jaws you want to have come up
with your hotkey,
Press Alt plus Enter,
Tab until you hear it say, "Shortcut none", The Alt and Control are already
assumed, so all you type here is the letter j, if that's what you want with
the Control and Alt for your Jaws hotkey.

I don't remember the rest exactly, but you will need to continue tabbing and
the choices will make sense. You will end with the OK key and that will be
the end of it.

Hope that helps.

Hi Fernando,
Many thanks for your reply. This was not what I needed, I wanted something
much simpler, that is, going to properties and general you somewhw find a
shortcuts option, which you enter and usually there is the contrl-alt-j
thing. I did it very easily on my other computer, but cannot retrieve the
instructions. All I want is, if jaws is closed for any reason, to be able to
quickly reactivate it.

Hi,

JAWS itself has a keyboard shortcut which creates a memory dump in case you
wish to send the error report to Freedom Scientific or contact Technical
Support, kills all JAWS-related processes and then relaunches it.
For cases in which this command doesn't work, I made a .cmd file that forces
killing of all JAWS processes and then run a certain specified JAWS version.
To do this, create a text file with the following content and save it with
extension .bat or .cmd:

taskkill /im jfw* /f
taskkill /im fs* /f
start /b JAWSnn
pause

In the Start command, nn is the JAWS version number as you would enter into
the Run dialog, for example 17 or 18.
You can save this file anywhere, then create a shortcut to this file in your
Desktop and assign it a hotkey in its properties.

This type of file lets you run a series of commands as if you enter each
command into a Command Prompt window and then press ENTER.
The /f parameter in the Taskkill command is the same as ending a process
directly from Task Manager's Processes (Windows 7 or earlier) or Details
(Windows 8 and newer) tab. If this parameter is not included, it is the same
as closing the program windows or using the End Task button, that is, send a
message for the program to close and wait to save data or any other
operation the program usually do when closed.
The * in names is to include multiple processes into a single command.
The Start command, with the /b parameter, allows to launch something by
specifying the string you would type in the Run (WINDOWS+R) dialog, in this
case the JAWS version of interest.
Finally, the Pause command, although not required, prevents the Command
Prompt window from being closed, displaying a “Press any key to continue”
message instead. This is useful to see the otput, for example, in case the
file is not working properly.

Hope it helps!

them simultaneously? When I press them the first time, I can see with my

strokes don't work. But, after I press the button, just before the screen
changes, Jaws says something, but then the computer shuts down. I have a 64

get Jaws working again without having to shut down the computer and wait for
it to start and load.

then use the arrow keys to navigate through this list and press enter to
activate a link.

Hi all,
Well I started using Jaws regularly last week and find it fairly easy to
figure out. But the help I have received from this list has been greatly
appreciated.

I am using windows ten the most current version of jaws on a 64 bit all in
one computer.

The problem I am having is there a shortcut for moving from link to link
without having to use the arrow keys.
I know for headers I just push the letter H and I move from header to
header. So I assumed the letter L would do the same thing moving from link
to link. If someone can tell me what need to do for moving from link to
link it would be greatly appreciated.
The other minor issue is when I open an email using Outlook 2016 I used to
just push the down arrow at the top of the document and it would read the
email This also is a problem with word and text documents.
So basically I am wondering how to make emails and documents read a page at
a time.

All help is greatly appreciated.

To stop Firefox from excessively saying "Clickable", try the following:

Under"Miscellaneous"there is a setting labeled

I am having a problem reading a few PDF articles I have just been sent.

Once I open the attachments, via Adobe Acrobat DC, I find that I cannot
advance beyond the first page of each article, either via the arrow keys, or
the page up and page down keys.

Interestingly, when I use my arrow keys and the page up or down keys, the

I'm using Windows 7 and the latest build of Jaws 18 here, along with Adobe

Any suggestions would be apreciated.

changing JAWS settings, I would love to know those as well.
I was doing my bank statement this morning and reading it with JAWS 18 and
some of it was not reading. When I switched to JAWS 14, the missing items
showed up. No matter which version I use, PDF documents never read in any
correct order, at least the ones I need to read.

Thanks.

[JAWS-Users] Tips for using the Asda website

Hi, Tips on using the Asda website would be appreciated. I can browse
to different sections like the chilled food section but it only seems
to show me a couple of the items in that section. How do I view all
items in a section?

[JAWS-Users] keyboard focus not changing when form is launched in excel 2013

2016-04-16 Thread a
Hi,

I've got a user form in excel 2013 that is launched when I press a keystroke.

The keyboard focus isn't being moved to the user form when it is
launched. It stays in the current worksheet. I have to press alt + tab
to move away from Excel and alt + tab to come back and put the focus
into my user form.

If I don't do that then when I press enter, it is passed through to
the worksheet rather than activating the search button on my form.

Is there any easy way to fix this? I am using VBA so can use that to
make any changes. I have noticed this behaviour with both jaws 16 and
17.

Thanks for any help

[JAWS-Users] JAWS17 not updating contents of webpage

2016-04-15 Thread a
Hi,

I've got a webpage that displays some text when I click on a button.
In JAWS 16, JAWS would automatically pick up and start reading the
text that had been added to the webpage.

However, in JAWS 17, I have to press insert + escape to refresh the
page so JAWS can pick up the new text displayed on the current
webpage.

I've set it to automatically refresh the webpage in the Jaws settings.
I'm not sure what other setting I can change or what else I can do.

thanks for any help

Did you try re classing that child window? First make sure JAWS is
focused on that particular child window, and press [Insert]+[7]
(Above the [u] key) and re class that field as a "Edit" field. See if
 that fixes the issue.

[JAWS-Users] how do I navigate to a specific time using Mp3 Direct Cut or alternative programs suggestions

2016-04-08 Thread a
Hi,

I am using the program MP3 Direct Cut to remove unwanted sections of
MP3's. It saves them without compressing the MP3 file again. The
program is mostly accessible and quick to load.

However, I am unable to work out how I can navigate to a specific time
in a MP3 file. There's a keyboard shortcut (Ctrl + p) that is supposed
to allow you to do this but I can't seem to type anything in the edit
field that appears.

Any help would be appreciated too resolve this or recommendations on
an alternative program.

Thank you

[JAWS-Users] view facebook lists in mobile site

2016-01-16 Thread a
I'm using jaws 16 with the latest version of internet explorer.

I've created separate lists for my friends on facebook so I can see
status updates from different friends quickly. Facebook have changed
their code lately as when I navigate down the page by heading, it
doesn't automatically load the next set of status's but instead goes
back to the top again and the cursor is randomly jumping all over the
place.

Is there a way to view lists in the mobile version of the facebook
site? as changing the URL to m.facebook.com doesn't work

Thanks,
David

[JAWS-Users] Accessible rich edit control in VBA and Excel 2013

2016-01-07 Thread a
Hi,

I'm using JAWS with Excel 2013 and VBA.

I want to be able to display text in a rich text edit control on a
user form in Excel 2013. At the moment, I have to copy text into
wordpad to get it to format correctly. If I paste it into notepad, any
line breaks are ignored. Once I've made any changes, I copy the text
back into my spreadsheet.
The standard text box control in Excel also messes up the line breaks
when saving text back into my spreadsheet and it's not very accessible
with JAWS.

Can you suggest an accessible rich edit control I could use and how I
can add it to my VBA project? The notes field used for the contacts
form in Outlook is accessible but I don't know how to add that.

Thanks and happy new year,

[JAWS-Users] Advice on creating accessible forms in Excel 2013

2015-10-01 Thread a
Hi,

I'm using Excel 2013 with JAWS 16 and have a spreadsheet with lots of
data in it that I use on a daily basis.
I am using VBA to filter worksheets etc. I would like to create a
front-end accessible GUI to allow me to enter new records and search
for information quickly.

How accessible are the form controls in Excel and are there some that
are more accessible than others?
And are there any tutorials on using the form designer with the
keyboard in Excel?

Thanks,
Julie

[JAWS-Users] Using the vocalizer voices, can I stop it from saying capital?

2013-06-15 Thread A. F. Childs
Hello,
I installed a vocalizer voice, and I was wondering if there is a way to
make it stop saying the word capital, when typing a capital letter?
I am hoping someone can help me to change this, or tell me if there is a
place on the FS web site, that tells how to do this.
Thanks to everyone,

The biggest problem I have with IE 9 and 10, is the way you download files, and

I was the one who said he was using jaws 14 and office 2013. When I first
started using it, it was very clunky, somethings just wouldn't load, and
sometimes you had to reboot for better results. Now that jaws 14 has an
update, most things work. The main thing that doesn't work is when you go to
type a signature, it doesn't read you the text, but it is there. When you try
to switch between accounts it won't tell you witch account is highlighted.
Spell check does the same thing, it will tell you there is a miss spelled word,
but not read you the suggestions. Your suppose to be able to sign in to your
sky drive account, and have your word documents saved there, but mine always
tells me to look because there were arrows discovered. That's all I have found
so far. FS knows, so we will see if they address it in the next update. As
for activating office, now you go through an automated system, that walks you
through and asks questions about how many pc's you have activated there product

Re: [JAWS-Users] JAWS 14 update posting on Monday, Feb 4th

Where do we report bugs for certain programs? I have been using office 2013
for almost 4 weeks, and want to report what is working and not working.
Granted I haven't tried it with the new update, but doubt they covered
everything.

Re: [JAWS-Users] IE 8 and menu bar problem

Gerald, I suggest you pass your information to tech support at
Freedom Scientific. When I contacted them a few months ago, they
said Jaws 9 does not support I.E. 8. It's fine to have your
anecdotal information, but I don't think you're in a position to make
a claim different of that of F.S.

I hate to keep sounding like a broken record, but IE 8 works just

JAWS 9. Maybe the folks who claim that IE 8 doesn't work with JAWS
9 did not have the latest build installed. The only JAWS feature
that does not work is read Address Bar (JAWS key-A), which is really
no big deal. I have been using JAWS 9 with IE 8 every day for over
two years and have yet to encounter any serious compatibility issues.

Hi Dwight,

Jaws 9 does not support I.E. 8. although some claim to have them
working fine together, I had a lot of trouble with the combination,
so much so I had to roll back to I.E. 7. I'm afraid that's your

Now when I go to the menu bar Jaws will read the headings such as file,

Does anyone have any suggestions?

money. Anyway, Jaws is loaded, but no speech. I do have Windows

What she wants to do is just copy the filename, in which case you

Re: [JAWS-Users] Copying the name of a file

2011-01-23 Thread Norma A. Boge

Hi guys,

Ok...copying the name of one file seems pretty simple, I'm kind of
ashamed I didn't think of the solution. However, what can I do if I
want to grab the names of multiple files in a list? Surely I
wouldn't have to do the F2 thing for each file, would I?

Thanks, you guys rock...
Norma

At 12:32 PM 1/23/2011, you wrote:

Betsy,

That is not the correct procedure for what she wants to do. If you
are in a file list and highlight the name of a file and press
control-c as you suggest, what you are in fact doing is copying the
whole file. If you follow your procedure and then go to a
different directory, you can press control v and you will see your
file is there, including the data.

What she wants to do is just copy the filename, in which case you
highlight the file, press f2, then copy the name and press enter.

Hi Norma,
I'm a bit confused by the answers you received to this so perhaps I
didn't understand the question. If I am in a list of files and want
to copy the name to move it somewhere, when I am on the filename I
just press control c.

In the same file list situation, the usual conventions regarding
selection of contiguous and non-contiguous items still pertain.

If you press the function key with the f-keys on the top
row of the computer, things will happen. Function key
with f8, for example, puts a Dell laptop into projection
mode for use with a screen for presentations. The other
keys work with the function key too, but I don't remember
what they do. If you have your Dell lap top manual, you
can probably find the information there.

For future reference you can always bring up the system tray, then enter on

When I type, Jaws chokes up and sometimes doesn't read the

Jaws does not have that same problem.

I believe that there is a way to have Jaws 11 recognize an

I believe it is a flash video file extention.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] An unknown file extension

Hi All;

I recently received an attachment with a ".flac" file extension. I tried
to

find it in the list of file extensions on the website with no luck. Would
someone please tell me what type of file this is or what program is most
commonly used to open such a file? I am running XPSP3 Home, OE, & Jaws 10
latest. All help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks much. Take care.

[JAWS-Users] Jaws says temporary when loading web page

2010-02-17 Thread Norma A. Boge

Hey everybody,

I'm running Jaws 9 with I.E. 7. I'm curious as to why Jaws is saying
"temporary" nearly every time it loads a web page. Also, how do I
restore the I.E. JCF file to the factory default settings?

Thanks,
Norma

[JAWS-Users] What FS says about I.E. 8 and J9

2010-02-04 Thread Norma A. Boge

Hey everyone,

I wrote to FS about my problems with I.E. 8 and Jaws 9. They said
that Jaws 9 does not work with I.E. 8, the first release of Jaws to
work with I.E. 8 is version 10.

I know there are those of you who are using this combination, and I'm
glad you're having good luck with it. I guess I'll roll back to I.E.
7 for the time being.

Thanks,
Norma

Re: [JAWS-Users] jaws and windows live!

2010-02-04 Thread Stewart A Overbey, Jr.

Don,

I wish I could be more help to you. I am using WLM on both my XP and
Window7 computers. It works identically on both.

As for screen resolution, my XP machine here at work is set at 1152 by 864
pixels. I'm sure my Windows7 home machine is roughly the same.

If you'd like, I'd be more than happy to get with you on skype, and possibly
compare settings, ETc.

Good luck and God bless you,

If anyone is interested, I copied the JAWS 10 scripts for Windows Live
Mail to the JAWS 11 user settings directory and recompiled. JAWS 11 still
will not function correctly for me.

What screen resolution do you have set on the system that works reasonably
well?

Don,

I did not manually install any scripts. If scripts came with JAWS 11, I
never noticed.

However, I just did a insert plus Q and heard that Microsoft Widnows Live
Mail Version 14 settings are loaded, so, I assume there are prepackaged
scripts with JAWS.

Does that mean you deleted the "Windows Live Mail" scripts in the shared
directory that are shipped with JAWS? I have no user scripts loaded. I
have considered copying the JAWS 10 scripts to the JAWS 11 user
directory. Not usually advised, but easy to reverse if it makes matters
worse. It would make life easier if I did not need to switch back and
forth!

Hello Don,

I certainly understand your frustrations, however, I experience none of
those issues. I don't have any scripts loaded, and read the header
fields by tabbing through them. Perhaps, uninstalling JAWS scripts,
then uninstalling and re-installing Windows Live Mail may improve it's
performance.

It has a couple of minor quirks, but, after trying several different
clients, I chose it because I could sync all my email accounts with my
Windows Live email account.

Each email program I tried had one quirk or the other, so, I find WLM
is the best compromise for my needs.

I hope you are able to get better performance from it, but, I would
never suggest that it is the best, or easiest, just my personal
preference.

Blessings,

Using JAWS 11 latest with Windows Live Mail, I can move between
folders all works well. It will announce unread and attachment when
appropriate, all is well. However, if I hit Enter on a message to
read the message, it will read only about 50% of the time. Most of
the time, the Delete key will announce "delete" but do nothing. Even
using Control + D, I can only read a couple of messages before it
stops reading correctly and nothing I do short of unloading and
starting JAWS again will it start reading again. If I attempt to
compose a message it gets confused regarding Forms Mode, and again
sometimes, the only way to get it right again is to restart JAWS.
These issues make it unusable for me! Strangely, the scripts that came
with JAWS 10 work much better for me!

Of course, there are also minor issues with both 10 and 11. The
address autocomplete name does not get announced. The number of
unread messages are not announced as you arrow through the folders.
The last thing I remember off the top of my head is that the hotkeys
Alt + 1 through Alt + 3 do not work to read those header fields to
read the From, Date, and To fields. Using Alt + 6 to read the Subject
is the only such header info that reads reliably.

I am fairly sure that Windows Live Mail will not work well with JAWS 8
since I do not think Live existed at the time. I have had the best
luck using JAWS 10 with Windows Live Mail! In fact, I have been
switching from JAWS 11 back to JAWS 10 just to read mail and then
switching back to JAWS 11 for everything else. FS claims an update is
imminent. I hope it fixes this issue.
