Re: [JAWS-Users] Service and application

2007-06-13 Thread David Ferrin

David, well done! Yes, the JAWS service is only required if you want
speech at the times when the gui isn't loaded in memory, such as the log
on window. Now would any other technician tell you that? Don't think so!

Re: [JAWS-Users] Service and application

2007-06-13 Thread David Ferrin
OK enough kidding around for today. When you have jaws launch on startup it
is running as a service. This means that for example if you have a logon
screen on your system because a password must be entered before you will be
able to proceed. If you are running jaws from a desktop icon it is running
as an application unless of course you specified that it run as a service.
Actually at that point it really doesn't matter to the end user so far as
it's functionality is concerned. I have mine running as a service both ways
but not for the reasons I've stated above. The reason I do it that way is so
that I'll not need to change my desktop icon any more as it will always
point to the version of jaws I have set to run at startup. Believe it or not
this is the easy explanation.

2007-06-13 Thread David Ferrin
Donnie, you make it so easy for me I can't resist. Yes of course I can give
you the instructions, but I think I'll let somebody else do it, I'm
performing major surgery on the web site today. This is just an email break
is all.

You can't have JAWS run both as an application and as a service.
Attempting to do so will result in the JAWS window appearing. You can
only have either or I'm afraid. Sorry about that.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Service and application

2007-06-13 Thread David Ferrin
If I didn't agree with you it would almost sound like bragging, but
considering some of the technical support people I've dealt with over the
years from various companies especially my own ISP I know you speak the
truth. So to put it in laymen's terms the jaws service is only required when
the complete GUI interface isn't loaded in to memory, for example on any
screen where a password is required on your local computer system. Keeping
in mind this has nothing to do with other types of login screens such as FTP
accounts ETC. Not bad for a guy who only got a B in English comp and was
told 20 years ago that he wasn't good enough to do computers at all.

OK, when JAWS starts as a service it will remain loaded from the log on
screen (if you have one) till your computer completely shuts down.
However, if JAWS starts as an application JAWS will shut down before Windows
does, therefore not reading the log off prompts. Hope that helps.

Just as soon as we can get an explanation that makes perfect sense to us
believe me the list will know, sorry but we've asked tech support and the
answer we received didn't hold a lot of water.
