If we can.
Any step by step instruction for doing it for the first few times to get use to
doing it a new way?

Hi Ron,
The drag and drop feature in JAWS was never consistent and it has not been
used by most people for years. The only way people get a consistent way of
moving a file or folder from one place to another, is to just do the copy or
cut, and paste it in the other place where you want it. Have a great one.

It is the key directly to the right of the numlock button.
Press, insert +
1, on the number row to turn on keyboard help to help locate it.
Insert + 1
is a toggle so, the same keystroke will turn off keyboard help as
well. HTH

Take care.

Hi all. A few weeks ago, I asked on the vip-l list how to drag
and drop, and was told to use the control, JAWS and numpad slash
in unison. I couldn't remember which key was the numpad slash so
tried using the app key with move instead, which my instructor
at RSB recommended. This did not work. Can somebody please tell
me which key the numpad slash is?

The reason I'm wanting to drag and drop is that I want to
re-arrange my desktop icons. At present, some of the programs I
use more are not up the top so I'd like to move them further up.

Thanks.

I usually do a copy and paste, But the following may give you some ideas.
It is the instructions I saved from somewhere to move items on the task bar.

Good luck

Drag Drop on the TaskBar

you can drag them to another location using the Jaws cursor:
1. Move to the program's button that you want to move.
2. Press Insert + Numpad Minus to route the Jaws Cursor to the PC cursor,
and then press Insert + Numpad Slash to lock the left mouse button, in other
words, start holding it down.
3. Press Numpad Plus to switch back to using the PC cursor, and then press
either Left Arrow or Right Arrow the number of times which is the number of
positions which you want to move the program either to the left or right
respectively. This moves the PC cursor to the position where you want the
program to end up.
4. Press Insert + Numpad Minus to route the Jaws cursor to the PC cursor,
and press Insert + Numpad Slash to unlock the left mouse button, in other
words, stop holding it down.
5. Finally, press Numpad Plus to switch back to the PC cursor.

trying to select something and can't do it because you have to drag
something and drop it into your cart or whatever, can you actually drag and

FYI, There are 3 things that can give you a lot of information about
jaws and keys.

1. Do a insert + 1. That tells you what keys are without activating them.
2. Insert + h, or w, or f1 twice. Will give help or keys for program.
3. Jaws help does have extended help topics on a lot of functions
with jaws and other programs.

[JAWS-Users] Dragging and dropping

2009-01-13 Thread David Griffith
I agree that dragging and dropping is a much needed feature, some programs
will only allow you to access features if you can drag and drop files into
their interface.

Unfortunately it appears that dragging and dropping seems to be very poorly
implemented, in Jaws 8 at least. When I received some training back in 2006
from sight and Sound in the UK they told me that they were unable to support
training in dragging and dropping. They said that this was because the
feature only actually worked in a tiny number of circumstances. The
circumstances it will work applied exclusively to Windows Explorer and could
not be usefully used with other programs. So it was considered not actually
a useful feature to provide training in.

The situation may have improved with later versions of Jaws but I have not
checked this out.

NVDA, the freeware screenreader provides the ability to hear what is under
the mouse cursor and there is some audible feedback when you move the mouse
about the screen. You may be able to cobble together some techniques using
these NVDA features but I have not tried this.

David Griffith

 Hi all,

I have recently become stuck when web sites require me to drag and drop
items to reorder them in a list, for example. I have checked in with all
 of
the help resources I can find, and have still had no success. First I use
the JAWS cursor and move to the item I want to select. The help files
 then
say to use the jaws key plus control plus 8 (I'm on a laptop), and imply
that this should give me some kind of drag-and-drop mode. It would then
seem that I should be able to move the selected item around using Alt plus
shift plus the arrow keys, but I haven't had any luck getting any of this
 to
work. Is there something I'm missing? I have found precious little
information on how to actually do this, just a brief description of the
 commands themselves.

 Any help would be appreciated.

 Thanks,

 Damon

The sites I've encountered this problem are fantasy sports sites (both Yahoo
and CBS Sportsline) where the pages in question are behind passwords, so I
can't really point to an example very easily. It is not a matter of
selecting multiple entries from a list box. They seem to want me to select
an item from some kind of list (*not* an HTML list) and drag items up or
down to change their priority or position in the list. It's completely a
visual thing, I imagine. The way it's described, if there are four items,
Alpha, Beta, Gamma, and Delta, and you wanted to put Delta second, you would
take your mouse, click on Delta and drag it up to between Alpha and Beta.
When you release it, the site would reorder it so it would now go Alpha,
Delta, Beta, Gamma. I have complained to the sites, but haven't yet had any
useful response.

I have not had to use this feature since 2004, so I am a little rusty. I
had to use this to select files and folders in a program to write data files
to a DVD before it was supported directly in Windows Explorer. Below is a
short description of how to use this keystroke from the JAWS Help file.

Drag and Drop (CTRL+INSERT+NUM PAD SLASH)
This command is used to drag items from one location and drop them in
another. Position the JAWS Cursor on the item you wish to move and press
CTRL+INSERT+NUM PAD SLASH. You can leave the JAWS Cursor active, or you can
switch to the PC Cursor. JAWS will keep speaking as you navigate. Once you
have positioned the JAWS or PC Cursor in the location to which you would
like to move the item, press CTRL+INSERT+NUM PAD SLASH again, and the item
will be moved to the position of the active cursor.

It's been quite a long time since I had to use it; but when I did, I found
that there were times JAWS didn't speak as I navigated. (Perhaps this was
 way before 2004, like 1999 or 2000.)

I have not had to use this feature since 2004, so I am a little rusty. I
had to use this to select files and folders in a program to write data
 files
to a DVD before it was supported directly in Windows Explorer. Below is a
short description of how to use this keystroke from the JAWS Help file.

Drag and Drop (CTRL+INSERT+NUM PAD SLASH)
This command is used to drag items from one location and drop them in
another. Position the JAWS Cursor on the item you wish to move and press
CTRL+INSERT+NUM PAD SLASH. You can leave the JAWS Cursor active, or you
 can
switch to the PC Cursor. JAWS will keep speaking as you navigate. Once you
have positioned the JAWS or PC Cursor in the location to which you would
like to move the item, press CTRL+INSERT+NUM PAD SLASH again, and the item
will be moved to the position of the active cursor.

have you brought the matter - dragging and dropping in lists on Web
 pages -
to the attention of FS? It should be an interesting challenge for them
 to
try and work something out for that with JAWS.

The sites I've encountered this problem are fantasy sports sites (both
 Yahoo
and CBS Sportsline) where the pages in question are behind passwords, so
 I
can't really point to an example very easily. It is not a matter of
selecting multiple entries from a list box. They seem to want me to
 select
an item from some kind of list (*not* an HTML list) and drag items up
 or
down to change their priority or position in the list. It's completely a
visual thing, I imagine. The way it's described, if there are four
 items,
Alpha, Beta, Gamma, and Delta, and you wanted to put Delta second, you
 would
take your mouse, click on Delta and drag it up to between Alpha and Beta.
When you release it, the site would reorder it so it would now go Alpha,
Delta, Beta, Gamma. I have complained to the sites, but haven't yet had
 any
 useful response.

[JAWS-Users] Dragging and dropping

2008-09-16 Thread Damon Graff
Hi all,

I have recently become stuck when web sites require me to drag and drop
items to reorder them in a list, for example. I have checked in with all of
the help resources I can find, and have still had no success. First I use
the JAWS cursor and move to the item I want to select. The help files then
say to use the jaws key plus control plus 8 (I'm on a laptop), and imply
that this should give me some kind of drag-and-drop mode. It would then
seem that I should be able to move the selected item around using Alt plus
shift plus the arrow keys, but I haven't had any luck getting any of this to
work. Is there something I'm missing? I have found precious little
information on how to actually do this, just a brief description of the
commands themselves.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Damon

2008-09-16 Thread Flor Lynch
What Web site? That might help us find alternative techniques for dealing
with the problem. have you ever tried multi-select combo boxes? These
enable you to go through a list of items in a combo box and select only some
of them: it occurs to me that that might help here. You press shift-F8 to
open a multi-select combo box, instead of alt-down-arrow (which you use for
a single selection combo box). After entering Forms Mode, press shift-F8,
to open the extendable select
list. Hit spacebar on each of the items you want to select. (All of this
is (or appears to be) an Internet Explorer functionality.)

What about copy and paste? I believe there's a copy to folder and move to
folder commands, under the file menu, under the folder submenu I think. Hope
that helps.

Hello. I'm trying to sort of get rod of the subfolders in OE by dragging
them back in to the local folders section. I cant do this with the drag
drop command as it says object to be drag was not found. Do any of you
know an easier way to do this?

Highlight the folder and do a control shift v to move and then select the
folder you want to move that folder to. If it is in the main folder you
want to move them to, just hit your home key and it shouldsay personal
folder, so you can press enter on that.
