Thank you Max

This appears to be one of those fluff features that provides a great excuse
for not dealing with some of the core issues we have all experienced
version-after version of JFW.
Let's fix the basics first and then make it cool.

This is the last message I will say on this topic. There is no
conspiracy here. The simple fact is that remote code execution
security holes are pretty common. Unless the developers for this
particular code are years ahead of everyone else there are undoubtedly
security holes in this tandem software. Once you put the functionality
into the software, someone out there will eventually figure out how to
exploit it. I am not suggesting that FreedomScientific will be spying
on you or anything like that. I am just saying that we see attacks
like this at the university all the time, although via other vectors.
Never-the-less, this just gives some hacker another bunch of code to
possibly exploit.

Personally, I think the threat is relatively small because of the small
install base, but saying that absolutely no one will ever get access to
your machine without being invited is a bit nieve.

I don't think there is a way to do that but as far as I understand it you
must give the other person a number that you get from the tandem site before
they can get onto your computer so you have control of it at all times and a
tandem session can not start unless you start it

 Hi folks,

For those of you who have been through the beta cycle with Jaws 10, is
 there
any way to disable the tandem feature?
On a personal note I see this as creating some huge security concerns.

I don't think there is a way to do that but as far as I understand it you
must give the other person a number that you get from the tandem site before
they can get onto your computer so you have control of it at all times and a
tandem session can not start unless you start it

In theory that's true. But enterprising hackers are always devising schemes
for doing their dirty work. Some hacker out there will figure out a way to
intercept the security code and gain access to somebody else's computer

Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws 10 Tandem

2008-11-04 Thread Dan Rossi
This is the last message I will say on this topic. There is no conspiracy
here. The simple fact is that remote code execution security holes are
pretty common. Unless the developers for this particular code are years
ahead of everyone else there are undoubtedly security holes in this tandem
software. Once you put the functionality into the software, someone out
there will eventually figure out how to exploit it. I am not suggesting
that FreedomScientific will be spying on you or anything like that. I am
just saying that we see attacks like this at the university all the time,
although via other vectors. Never-the-less, this just gives some hacker
another bunch of code to possibly exploit.

Personally, I think the threat is relatively small because of the small
install base, but saying that absolutely no one will ever get access to
your machine without being invited is a bit nieve.

Re: [JAWS-Users] Jaws 10 Tandem

2008-11-04 Thread Rick Harmon
the security codes are very short lived according to FS. I think they are
valid for something like 60 minutes and then they expire. So these codes
even if hacked somehow would be pretty much useless and besides the code is
the only info you get. You don't get what machine wants to use the code and
you don't get the target end as only the target end enters the code.

the security codes are very short lived according to FS. I think they are
valid for something like 60 minutes and then they expire. So these codes
even if hacked somehow would be pretty much useless and besides the code
is
the only info you get. You don't get what machine wants to use the code
and

you don't get the target end as only the target end enters the code.

In theory that's true. But enterprising hackers are always devising
schemes

for doing their dirty work. Some hacker out there will figure out a way
to

intercept the security code and gain access to somebody else's computer
without authorization. It doesn't bother me in the least because I have
reverted to JAWS 9.

I don't think there is a way to do that but as far as I understand it you
must give the other person a number that you get from the tandem site
before
they can get onto your computer so you have control of it at all times
and

a
tandem session can not start unless you start it

For those of you who have been through the beta cycle with Jaws 10, is
there
any way to disable the tandem feature?
On a personal note I see this as creating some huge security concerns.

This is the last message I will say on this topic. There is no
conspiracy here. The simple fact is that remote code execution security
holes are pretty common. Unless the developers for this particular code
are years ahead of everyone else there are undoubtedly security holes in
this tandem software. Once you put the functionality into the software,
someone out there will eventually figure out how to exploit it. I am
not suggesting that FreedomScientific will be spying on you or anything
like that. I am just saying that we see attacks like this at the
university all the time, although via other vectors. Never-the-less,
this just gives some hacker another bunch of code to possibly exploit.

Personally, I think the threat is relatively small because of the small
install base, but saying that absolutely no one will ever get access to
your machine without being invited is a bit nieve.

Subject: [JAWS-Users] Jaws 10 Tandem

Hi folks,

For those of you who have been through the beta cycle with Jaws 10, is there
any way to disable the tandem feature?
On a personal note I see this as creating some huge security concerns.

I love it when people come on e-mail lists with no
