The MySQL driver is GPL and cannot be redistributed (without making JBMail
also GPL) thus the unit tests should merely check to see if the driver is
present, if it is not, they should WARN and continue without running the
 MYSQL dependent tests.

[JBoss-dev] [Design of AOP on JBoss (Aspects/JBoss)] - Re: AOPC question on the inner src tag

2005-01-22 Thread thomasma
Thx for the response. The sample you have is the same i have in my build.

Problem is by the time in my build process aopc runsthe above classes
folder probably has around 3000 or so compiled classes.

My aspect definition in the -aop.xml file is against all classes that have a
pattern of *BO.class (of course written in the manner expected by aop). We have
probably around 200-250 classes that end with *BO. These are our business
objects. I cannot change the current build structure since thats pretty much
written in stone (or not managed by me). If you run aopc against so many
classes (with verbose turned ON) you will see that it tries to match every
.class to the patterns defined in the -aop.xml file. And at some point dies
outofmemory. I am still surprised with this implementation. Since we use
weblogic the build dir even contains all weblogic precompiled classes.

- Now the workaround for me is to copy the *BO classes in my aop build first to
a temp classes folder...aspect against that classes folder and then move them
back to the main folder...will work but not the most desirable approach.

2005-01-22 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Hi,

From our testsuite:

  | aopc compilerclasspathref=aop.task.classpath
  | classpath refid=aop.task.classpath/
  | classpath path=${build.tests.classes}/
  | src path=${build.tests.classes}/
  | include name=org/jboss/test/aop/basic/**/
  | aoppath path=${source.res}/test/basic/jboss-aop.xml/
  | /aopc
  |
  |

You should be able to add multiple include elements, and they can contain
patterns. So this should work:

  | include name=com/package1/package2/**/*BO.class/
  |

Please let me know if this helps.

2005-01-22 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
I agree with you than DIV would be great. I even tried to make a full CSS theme
for Nukes 1.

The problem is not backward compatibility, it's today compatibility with the
browser used too often that does not respect any standard (you probably guess
which one i am talking about).

This just make me sick to see how bad this browser is. As long as 90% of
people don't want to switch to a standard browser, we are stuck with tables (or
very dirty tricks)

Environment: Windows XP with JBoss 4.0.0 and JBoss 4.0.1

 Reporter: Wilson Pu
 Assignee: Scott M Stark
 Priority: Critical

// Same bug posted on SourceForge with attachment
 Hello,
JBOSS App. Srv. returns/contains wrong interface type with CMR traversal
using EJB-QL. We recreated the line item example from Mastering EJB Appendix
D on EJB-QL entity bean relationship traversal (page 574).
 Test case below.
 We created 3 tables:
 Customer
 -
 customerId (pk)
 name
 Order
 -
 orderId (pk)
 customerId (fk)
 date
 LineItem
 -
 lineItemId (pk)
 orderId (fk)
 sku
 quantity
On the CustomerBean, we defined a finder method using Xdoclet.
 @ejb.finder
 signature=Collection
 findCustomerLineItems(int customerId)
 unchcked=true
 query=SELECT OBJECT(l) FROM Customer AS c,
 IN(c.orders) o, IN (o.lineItems) l WHERE c.customerId=?1
 result-type-mapping=Local
We also defined CMR for getting the orders from the customer bean and getting
the lineitems from the order bean.
Base on the finder method, we are expecting to return a collection of
LineItemLocal interface. However, we got CustomerLocal interface instead.

[JBoss-dev] [Design of JBoss Portal] - Re: Porting to HSQL

2005-01-22 Thread iwadasn
LOL, and MySQL is a production database? What are you smoking, and why aren't
you sharing. I would rather trust my data to a coked out leper than to MySQL.
One little example, is that if you'll examine the files, you'll notice that I
dropped a UNIQUE index on a column in one of the tables. You guys insert NULL
twice into a UNIQUE column, a hat trick that won't work on any database with
actual relational integrity, or even real constraints.

However, mudslinging aside... HSQL may not be a production database, but it
is the default database, and it's easy to set up. In fact, it comes
pre-installed with JBOSS. This means that anybody could easily install your
portal software, and verify that it works and does what they need it to do
before worrying about installing and configuing a database. In fact, it could
be included by default in the all configuration, and designed to use the
DefaultDS. A simple install of JBoss would give you a working portal, sounds
good, doesn't it?

Anyway, Please make it a little more of a priority for this to work on non
MySQL databases. For my part, if I get time I'll investigate HSQL, and do that
for you. For me, it needs to support HSQL, Oracle, and Postgres if I am to use
it. one is for work, and the other for fun

[JBoss-dev] [Design of JBoss Portal] - Re: Porting to HSQL

2005-01-22 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
There is no need for agressivity. Thanks.

I smoke the same thing as EADS (European defence), Yahoo, NASA, Dell, Mac
Afee, Symantex, Veritas... who use MySQL on production.

We used to have Nukes running on HSQL for demo, so you just had to unzip and it
was ready to work, good for testing.

I didn't say thay JBoss Portal was running only on MySQL, but as a matter of
fact, this is the most popular database used even on production.

PostrgeSQL work for sure and Oracle should. You can get information on this
forum on how to do it.

If the JDBC driver of HSQL is not complete, i would encourage you to
participate to the development of it.
It would be good to have but not a must-have. Again there are other priorities.

[JBoss-dev] [Design of JBoss Portal] - Re: Porting to HSQL

2005-01-22 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
At this point the focus is on features on the database that jboss will use for
its site so the default out of the box expierence is not as easy as it should
be. If you can contribute an update for hsqldb that fixes this that would be
greate. The final release will certainly have support for the db we embed in
jboss.

Nice to see you jae :)

I agree. But anyway, it's still an alpha release, what's important is the code
and available customization (as a coder) than the behavior.

[JBoss-dev] [Design of JBoss Portal] - Postgresql setup

2005-01-22 Thread nick.rathke
Greetings,

I am trying to setup JBoss Portal 2.0a with Postgres on JBoss4.0.0RC1 The

outlined in the Mon Sep 20, 2004 post on postgres. I have my postgres driver

Hotdeployment fails with StringIndexOutOfBounds Exception
-

 Key: JBAS-1315
 URL: http://jira.jboss.com/jira/browse/JBAS-1315
 Project: JBoss Application Server
Type: Bug
Versions: JBossAS-4.0.1 Final
Environment: Windows XP, Sun JDK 1.4.2_05
Reporter: larswunderlich
 Assigned to: Scott M Stark

Deploying the sample application as described in JBoss IDE documentation 1.3.0
with 1.4.0 plugin fails with the following error. This happens in every
configuration (default as well as all). I don't know how to solve the bug, the
exception does not provide any further information what's going on.
The EAR file structure, as well as the WAR and EJB structure seems just fine.

[JBoss-dev] [Design of JBoss Portal] - Re: Porting to HSQL

2005-01-22 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
well if there is an order of magnitude of difference in production between mysq
and oracle, there is also an order of magnitude of difference between hsqldb
and mysql.

that being said hsqldb is nice to use for demoing purpose.

iwadasn wrote : LOL, and MySQL is a production database? What are you
smoking, and why aren't you sharing. I would rather trust my data to a coked
out leper than to MySQL. One little example, is that if you'll examine the
files, you'll notice that I dropped a UNIQUE index on a column in one of the
tables. You guys insert NULL twice into a UNIQUE column, a hat trick that won't
work on any database with actual relational integrity, or even real
constraints.
  |
  | However, mudslinging aside... HSQL may not be a production database,
but it is the default database, and it's easy to set up.
  |

[JBoss-dev] [Design of JBoss Portal] - Errors when building and deploying Jboss Portal v.2.0 Alfa

2005-01-22 Thread prax
I have experienced a few discrepencies between the online instructions for
building and deploying the portal and what seems to be happening in reality.

Any pointers would be appreciated.

Environment :

OS : WinXP
SDK: 1.4.2_06
Jboss AS : 4.0
Portal : 2.0 Alfa
db : mySQL 4.0.23

The user guide instructs one to build using the command : $jbossportal
home/core/build deploy

Which then results in writing data to $jboss home\server\standard.
I seem to have only the following posts in my jboss installation
- All
-Default
-Minimal

The standard directory is created and not completed (with lib, deploy etc..)

Where can this config be changed to point the 'build deploy' script to the
default value instead of 'standard'?
Is my environment supported or are some of the components incompatible? (highly
unlikely as Jira seems to be running just fine on the same instance of Jboss
and db)

Yes, the directory in the docs seems to be wrong. I'll update it.

The correct way is to go to jboss-portal/build and type build deploy. The
same error exists in Linux and Win docs.

2005-01-22 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
No this is correct, the problem is that you are using JBoss 4.0.1 and the doc
id for JBoss 4.0.0 (with a standard configuration)

You can either install JBoss 4.0.0 OR keep Jboss 4.0.1 (and i would recommend
that) and change the file:
$PORTAL_HOME/build.local.properties
portal.deploy.dir=default
instead of
portal.deploy.dir=standard

You will need to copy jboss-cache.jar and jgroups.jar in default.lib and do
whatever is said in the documentation :)

Then you just run JBoss by typing ./run (not -c standard of course)

No, we use hibernate any database supported by Hibernate is supported by JBoss

I tried using HSQLDB and it works, you just need to specify the Dialect

Following steps executed :

- Replaced 'Standard' with 'default' in $portal_home\build\local.properties
- copied the necessary files to ...default\lib
- ran 'build deploy' in $portal_home\core

The following error is being generated. See logfile extract below.

Seems to me we are missing out on a key element here.

Stupid question: did you still try to reach the page, does it work ?

Ok, sorry i took the guess that you were using 4.0.1, but actually you are
using 4.0.0RC1 (that does not have the standard configuration neither), you
should use the final. But even better now that you modified standard-default,
you should install 4.0.1 (Final).

You can see a clustering doc for slide here:
http://wiki.apache.org/jakarta-slide/ClusterSupport

Its my understanding that all nodes depend on a central node. If that one
fails, clustering fails. One option is to look in to integrating JBoss
technology for clustering and cache-invalidation, but this may not happen with
the given time-frame for Beta.

Currently, we are built to support FS content. Slide supports DB storage, and
I'm to look in to this and clustering for Beta. They do not use Hibernate and
have their own internal pooling mechanism, is my understanding. I'm not sure of
the benefits of having the content store in the DB at all at this point.

[JBoss-dev] [Design of JBoss Portal] - Re: Porting to HSQL

2005-01-22 Thread freddt
It's nice to read this discussion. Thanks for the focus on HSQLDB. I'd like to
add a few comments.

- Open source databases are advancing very quickly. Firebird was missing from
the comments and shouldn't be neglected.
- There is an order of magnitude of difference between any Java database and
non-java ones as far as J2EE use is concerned. You cannot package a non-Java
database into the Java install! Specific to HSLQDB, the other order of
magnitude of difference is speed for smaller (say 100MB) databases.
- SQL standards do stipulate that you can insert many rows containing nulls in
the columns of UNIQUE constraints. We had no other than the convenor of the SQL
Standard Committee comment on this regarding HSQLDB (which is now compliant).
As this feature is not supported uniformly amon different database engines, it
should be handled with care in multi-target db applications.
- getGeneratedKeys() is a tricky JDBC method and needs a lot of things to
consider before it can be implemented. For example, in HSQLDB, you can reset
the IDENTITY column of a whole table with a command such as UPDATE mytable SET
idcolumn = null. Now if there are a million rows in that table, are we
supposed to keep all the new identity values in the current session just in
case the next call is getGeneratedKeys()?
- we are currently working specifically on JBoss MQ usage in HSQLDB and have
already improved it a lot (I have commented on this recently in the JMQ forum).
Please try the latest 1.8.0.RC4 and comment. RC5 should be out soon.

There are 3 errors in the StringMonitor tests due to the expectation of an
jmx.monitor.error.attribute notification resulting from the monitored attribute
being null. The java5 implementation explicitly ignores this condition and its
certainly not clear from the spec that such an error should be generated for
this condition.

In theory, yes. The support is there, just commented out in the domains.xml
file. I have not tested/documented it so you are at the mercy of slide and
their docs/lists.

First, I need to build in the new (non-beta) v2.1 slide. Then, I will begin
testing with clustering. I will doc this in the portal reference guide, before
the Beta release. So yes, it will be supported and documented for the Beta
release.

As for DB support, I will also test this and document it. I prefer to not ship
with DB by default, but this is up for discussion.

Thank you, a well reasoned reply.

Anyway, here's a link that might be of interest

http://sql-info.de/mysql/gotchas.html

Basically, my problem with MySQL is that it's totally dominated from above by
Postgres, and from below by HSQL. Perhaps it's dominated a thirdtime by Derby,
but I haven't actually used that yet so I can't say for sure, same goes for
firebird, and others.

I'll repeat myself here. At work, like most financial firms, MySQL doesn't even
get in the door. For many years the official position of the MySQL developers
was that relational integrity and constraints should be left to the
applications, so that their database could be left to.to do what? It's bad
enough that the DB has very weak relational/constraint handling, but the fact
that the developers only put it in grudgingly, and are convinced that it's
useless is a serious cause for concern. Such blasphemy is known too boil
holywater, and make babies cry. :-)

I'm not trying to pick a fight here, but if the official position of JBoss is
that they require a DB whose official position is that they really just want to
be a native code flat file reader (no constraints, no relational integrity, no
triggers, procs, views, etc), then this isn't going to work out for a lot
of people. This is tricky territory.

[JBoss-dev] [Design of JBoss Portal] - Portal page URL convention

2005-01-22 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]

It's not bad. Feel free to ignore my rant.

Just index.html?page=wiki is not a very natural address for HTTP resource.

I think we discussed once that it could be done with a filter that converts
something like /host/portal/page/wiki into
/host/portal/index.html?page=wiki

Correct, but I think this is ugly.

Also remember we are doing subdomain mapping for labs at the tomcat level, I

Google will still index these pages, and the main pages at least are still able

they show how a request is decoded an turned down into an invocation and how an

it is really similar to the Invoker design we have in JBoss.

[JBoss-dev] [Design of JBoss Portal] - Re: Porting to HSQL

2005-01-22 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
iwadasn wrote : I'm not trying to pick a fight here, but if the official
position of JBoss is that they require a DB whose official position is that
they really just want to be a native code flat file reader (no constraints, no
relational integrity, no triggers, procs, views, etc), then this isn't
going to work out for a lot of people. This is tricky territory.

Again, we are not picking a database for the user, JBoss Portal is made to work
on most of the databases. (Oracle, PostgreSQL, Firebird, MySQL, HSQL...[put
your own database supported by Hibernate])
It is configured by default to work with MySQL (widely used), but many users
will use some other database, there are only very few things to change to make
it work on another database. I updated the documentation to explain the process
(it is not online yet though).

[JBoss-dev] [Design of JBoss Portal] - Re: Portal page URL convention

2005-01-22 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
an invoker role is AS is to take the invocation and make it travel to the
server,
it is splitted between the client and the server.

In my case, when the portlet creates a portlet URL which targets a portlet,
let's
say an action. The PortletURL object toString() method is responsible for
creating
a URL that will invoke the processAction() method on the component. So this
represents an invocation. It has a target, the portlet ID, a server to send
the invocation to and a bunch of parameters.

So there is a need for a mechanism that takes all of these and creates a URL
that
will invoke the processAction() on the object with the specified parameters.
That mechanism is on the PortletURL side responsible for creating the URL and
it also sits in the portlet to receive the request/response, decodes the request
(id and parameters) and invoke the portlet.

2005-01-22 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
I am not sure of that, but the benefits of having that design could be with
WSRP which is another way to invoke portlets. It is a protocol based on SOAP
which express the same invocation semantics defined on portlets.

But I am just speculating here.

[JBoss-dev] [Design of JBoss Portal] - Re: Build Fails....

2005-01-22 Thread joehobson
I seem to have sidetracked this build problem, by pulling explode.jar out of
jboss-portal/tools/lib/ and trying the build over again. Of course i ran into a
new issue when i did that one, further down the build. The JavaCC issue, which
seemed to be resolved by changing the format/build.xml file so that
javacchome was set to a copy of sun-javacc that i had from old nukes code.

That got me past that issue, but then another came up (of course)...

BUILD FAILED
  | file:/home/jhobson/dev/jboss-portal-2.0/format/build.xml:114: Could not
create task or type of type: jflex.
  |
  | Ant could not find the task or a class this task relies upon.
  |

i tried copying jflex.jar into various locations (including
$JBOSS_HOME/servers/default/lib) but i still get this error. So my build still
fails. Any suggestions? ... .joe

I am a bit (a lot ?) confused.

What are you trying to do exactly ?

If you are just trying to build JBoss Portal 2.0 alpha i would suggest that you
restart from scratch following the documentation.

[JBoss-dev] [JBoss JIRA] Commented: (JBAS-1301) Tomcat backward compatbility loss VirtualHost-Alias mapping

2005-01-22 Thread Andrew Oliver (JIRA)
 [
http://jira.jboss.com/jira/browse/JBAS-1301?page=comments#action_12314815 ]

Andrew Oliver commented on JBAS-1301:
-

I'm heading back out on the road tomorrow. I have a running theory that goes
like this:

what if an init on startup servlet threw an exception and swallowed it? Then
could the servlet container get created but tomcat not map it to virutal
servers? Could this be happening?

Tomcat backward compatbility loss VirtualHost-Alias mapping

  Key: JBAS-1301
  URL: http://jira.jboss.com/jira/browse/JBAS-1301
  Project: JBoss Application Server
 Type: Bug
   Components: Web (Tomcat) service
 Versions: JBossAS-4.0.1 Final, JBossAS-3.2.6 Final
 Reporter: Andrew Oliver
 Assignee: Scott M Stark
  Fix For: JBossAS-3.2.7 Final
  Attachments: server.xml

 Original Estimate: 3 hours
 Remaining: 3 hours

In JBoss 3.2.3 (Tomcat 4.x) it was possible to create a Virtual Host and set
of Aliases in the jboss-service.xml and then map the webapps to the aliases
through the app deployment descriptors. In tomcat 5 this works for *some*
apps that have been deployed. The rest throw a 400 error saying no virtual
host has been configured. The same apps mapped directly to the actual vhost
(not alias) do not throw this error. The previous behavior can be useful for
builds which target multiple environments (stage/test/prod/etc). Moreover it
should be preserverd for backward compatibility.

[JBoss-dev] [Design of JBoss Portal] - Re: Porting to HSQL

2005-01-22 Thread iwadasn

OK, cool. Good to hear all around. Except for those admin pages, it seems to
work for me, so I'll just assume that it'll be OK as of the next release, and
then I'll dive into testing it.

Despite all appearances, I actually feel that this forum topic was pretty
helpful. With a slight addition to the docs, and a working HSQL script (you can
use mine if you want, might save you 15 minutes of porting work), I think I'll
be good to go for the next release.

Just as a recap for everyone, here are the HSQL versions of the Hibernate
files

From /portal-core.sar/portal-core.har/META-INF/hibernate-service.xml

?xml version=1.0 encoding=UTF-8?

   java:DefaultDS
   java:portal/SessionFactory
   net.sf.hibernate.dialect.HSQLDialect
   net.sf.hibernate.cache.TreeCacheProvider
   jboss.jca:service=DataSourceBinding,name=DefaultDS

From portal-forums.sar/portal-forums.har/META-INF/hibernate-service.xml

?xml version=1.0 encoding=UTF-8?

   java:DefaultDS
   java:portal/ForumSessionFactory
   net.sf.hibernate.dialect.HSQLDialect
   net.sf.hibernate.cache.TreeCacheProvider
   jboss.jca:service=DataSourceBinding,name=DefaultDS

I changed them to use the DefaultDS, to dispense with YADB (Yet Another
Database).

Change those two files and don't bother to copy over the Portal-ds.xml file.
None of the tables collide with the JMS tables, so everything should be OK if
you haven't dumped too much junk in your DefaultDS.

Then you need to apply the SQL script. You can either just hack it into your
HSQL files directly (probably not a good idea), or

1) make sure your deploy/hsql-ds.xml file is set up to allow network
connections.

2) Open up Squirrel (a SQL editor/DB manager), point it at the URL in you
hsql-ds.xml file.

3) Cut and paste in the entire script from the first post on this thread.

4) Close SQuirreL

5) Start up your JBoss instance.

you're done

BTW, Fred, Jboss guys, when can we expect to see a HSQL 1.8 included with JBoss?
