[JOYnet] LIving in the shadow of death Psalm 23
The dead vendor at the world trade center = This afternoon I happened to hear from a boy who were in a shopping center. The boy and the mother were talking about some issues and that is the time I passed by them. I heard the boy relating with the mother I am the one suffering. I am hurt mom. Could you feel my feelings?. What an astounding statement from a six-year-old boy whom I knew! I stopped by them and appreciated the intelligent statement he made . We are talking about the terrorists attack on the World Trade Center the mom tried to introduce the discussion with a smile and the son got hurt as the mom smiled mentioning the mishap at the World Trade Center I am hurt when I see her smile as I share my hurts about the attack on our land. The boy wanted his mother to show grief as she mentioned the word World trade center. A lot of feelings in him. This boy is very hurt I said to myself. I found that to be an interesting conversation and I tried to stay with these friends. The boys name is Mathew whom I call Matt and his Mom is Mary. (The names are real). Matt was in New York city recently with his mom and dad. Mat had a lighted pen in his pocket. He took that out and showed to me expressing his sadness. I remember the vendor who sold this pen to me. He might be dead today. He was nice to me and even gave me a small gift. When Matt said this, Mary his mother turned around and gave him a hug. I heard her say to him I love you my son. I know it hurts you. Thank you mom. You are so good. I love you was the response from Matt. He was happy that the mom changed her behavior and shared his pain. I think this is what our children are asking us to do. We need to listen to them instead of giving them advise all the time. Matt and his friends were talking about this event at school and the teachers did spend some time explaining to them about the mishap at new York City. Matt was able to share the pain of the whole world at this mishap because he knew someone in New York who might be dead today and that hurts him and that is the vendor who was kind to him. My reflection = I for myself am not sure if the vendor at the World trade center is alive or dead but this boy feels for him thinking that he might be dead. I herd the boy say The World Trade Center is gone. I saw that in the T.V. But I am going to keep this pen and the hat my dad bought for me from Manhattan. an amazing way for the boy to remember the tragic event!! As I was walking home, I started to feel what this little boy felt. I thought about the many people who might be buried in the rubbles. I Remember going up the World Trade Center last year some time and I started to dust off my memories about the many people who were atop the building who might be burned alive or jumped from the windows almost th of a mile from the ground. Oh that was a sickening thought. The beautiful view of the Empire State building, the Hudson River, the Statue of Liberty and the entire Manhattan area and many other amazing views flashed through my memory. The view is there but the venue to view them had changed. It shocked me to think, It could have happened when I was there. I could have been atop the building . I dont know if the person who was trading when Matt went there was there today. But it is a possibility that he might have been there or someone else was there trading something else. I thought about the cafeteria and the people who traded atop the building, on the view deck. There were many people who worked in that building who either jumped off of the building or came down with the building. I wonder if anyone escaped from the view deck. The many tourists and even the people who may have served Pizza for little Matt might be gone. The smiling faces of tho! se poor and innocent people I wont be able to see again. I cant take another photograph from the top of that building, I wont get a photograph taken by their photographer as we line up to get into the elevator. As I remember, the elevator in that building was one of the fastest and yet quietest. All those people who are employed on top of the World trade Center are gone. It would have been a very sad day for me and my family if my cousin who came from the middle east to see the Americas went on top of the building yesterday. He landed in Philadelphia and was planning to go to New York yesterday but his brother in law couldnt be absent from work yesterday and that saved his life. I called Shaji and his in laws in Philadelphia. Many of you may have family and or friends in new York, Washington and the related areas. I was surprised to read in the Deepika, yesterday about that Vincent and Appu and his mom. They were my guests in California, some time back and I was their guest too as he studied in Nevada

[JOYnet] GOD WORKS IN MYSTERIOUS WAYS
GOD WORKS IN MYSTERIOUS WAYS Iwas an unusually cold day for the month of May. Spring had arrived and everything was alive with color. But a cold front from the North had brought winter's chill back to Indiana. I sat, with two friends, in the picture window of a quaint restaurant just off the corner of the towns-square. The food and the company were both especially good that day. As we talked, my attention was drawn outside, across the street. There, walking into town, was a man who appeared to be carrying all his worldly goods on his back. He was carrying, a well-worn sign that read, I will work for food. My heart sank. I brought him to the attention of my friends and noticed that others around us had stopped eating to focus on him. Heads moved in a mixture of sadness and disbelief. We continued with our meal, but his image lingered in my mind. We finished our meal and went our separate ways. I had errands to do and quickly set out to accomplish them. I glanced toward the town square, looking somewhat halfheartedly for the strange visitor. I was fearful, knowing that seeing him again would call some response. I drove through town and saw nothing of him. I made some purchases at a store and got back in my car. Deep within me, the Spirit of God kept speaking to me: Don't go back to the office until you've at least driven once more around the square. And so, with some hesitancy, I headed back into town. As I turned the square's third corner. I saw him. He was standing on the steps of the storefront church, going through his sack. I stopped and looked, feeling both compelled to speak to him, yet wanting to drive on. The empty parking space on the corner seemed to be a sign from God: an invitation to park. I pulled in, got out and approached the town's newest visitor. Looking for the pastor? I asked. Not really, he replied, just resting. Have you eaten today? Oh, I ate something early this morning. Would you like to have lunch with me? Do you have some work I could do for you? No work, I replied. I commute here to work from the city, but I would like to take you to lunch. Sure, he replied with a smile. As he began to gather his things. I asked some surface questions. Where you headed? St. Louis. Where you from? Oh, all over; mostly Florida. How long you been walking? Fourteen years, came the reply. I knew I had met someone unusual. We sat across from each other in the same restaurant I had left earlier. His face was weathered slightly beyond his 38 years. His eyes were dark yet clear, and he spoke with an eloquence and articulation that was startling. He removed his jacket to reveal a bright red T-shirt that said, Jesus is The Never Ending Story. Then Daniel's story began to unfold. He had seen rough times early in life. He'd made some wrong choices and reaped the consequences. Fourteen years earlier, while backpacking across the country, he had stopped on the beach in Daytona. He tried to hire on with some men who were putting up a large tent and some equipment. A concert, he thought. He was hired, but the tent would not house a concert but revival services, and in those services he saw life more clearly. He gave his life over to God. Nothing's been the same since, he said, I felt the Lord telling me to keep walking, and so I did, some 14 years now. Ever think of stopping? I asked. Oh, once in a while, when it seems to get the best of me. But God has given me this calling. I give out Bibles. That's what's in my sack. I work to buy food and Bibles, and I give them out when His Spirit leads. I sat amazed. My homeless friend was not homeless. He was on a mission and lived this way by choice. The question burned inside for a moment and then I asked: What's it like? What? To walk into a town carrying all your things on your back and to show your sign? Oh, it was humiliating at first. People would stare and make comments. Once someone tossed a piece of half-eaten bread and made a gesture that certainly didn't make me feel welcome. But then it became humbling to realize that God was using me to touch lives and change people's concepts of other folks like me. My concept was changing, too. We finished our dessert and gathered his things. Just outside the door, he paused. He turned to me and said, Come Ye blessed of my Father and inherit the kingdom I've prepared for you. For when I was hungry you gave me food, when I was thirsty you gave me drink, a stranger and you took me in. I felt as if we were on holy ground. Could you use another Bible? I asked. He said he preferred a certain translation. It traveled well and was not too heavy. It was also his personal favorite. I've read through it 14 times, he said. I'm not sure we've got one of those, but let's stop by our church and see. I was able to find my new friend a Bible that would do well, and he seemed very grateful. Where you headed from here? Well,

[JOYnet] Pope John Paul II's Statement
Hello everyone. Today, instead of his normal catechetical talk, Pope John Paul II talked about the tragedy in our country in his Wednesday audience. Here's what he said: I cannot begin this audience without expressing my profound sorrow at the terrorist attacks which yesterday brought death and destruction to America, causing thousands of victims and injuring countless people. To the President of the United States and to all American citizens I express my heartfelt sorrow. In the face of such unspeakable horror we cannot but be deeply disturbed. I add my voice to all the voices raised in these hours to express indignant condemnation, and I strongly reiterate that the ways of violence will never lead to genuine solutions to humanity's problems. Yesterday was a dark day in the history of humanity, a terrible affront to human dignity. After receiving the news, I followed with intense concern the developing situation, with heartfelt prayers to the Lord. How is it possible to commit acts of such savage cruelty? The human heart has depths from which schemes of unheard-of ferocity sometimes emerge, capable of destroying in a moment the normal daily life of a people. But faith comes to our aid at these times when words seem to fail. Christ's word is the only one that can give a response to the questions which trouble our spirit. Even if the forces of darkness appear to prevail, those who believe in God know that evil and death do not have the final say. Christian hope is based on this truth; at this time our prayerful trust draws strength from it. With deeply felt sympathy I address myself to the beloved people of the United States in this moment of distress and consternation, when the courage of so many men and women of good will is being sorely tested. ** This mail is generated from JOYnet, a Jesus Youth mailing list. [JOYnet] Our Prayers needed for world peace
Dear Father Almighty, As we mourn for all the people who died in the attack, many of whom woke up with no prayer or thought of You on their hearts, we ask You to extend the full portion of Your Mercy on their souls, even upon the souls of the perpetrators of this horrible crime. We also beg of you to send the Holy Spirit, the Comforter, into the lives of their surviving relatives and friends. You, Father, and You alone, have the power to bring good out of evil. We humbly implore you to guide the hands, feet, and minds of all rescue workers, police and fire workers, and members of the military who are responding to this crisis at this very moment. Protect them. Enlighten them. Help them save lives. We ask, too, Almighty One, that You extend a blanket of divine protection on the United States at this critical time. Guide our leaders, especially President Bush, and all sovereign nations who are our friends, and place them under the special mantle of the Immaculate Conception, Our Lady, who is the patroness of our country. We ask all of this in the Holy Name that is Above All Other Names in Power and Glory and Love and Mercy; in the name of Jesus Christ, Your Son, our brother, and Our Savior. [JOYnet] introspection
As I sat in church this evening for tonight's Mass, the realization of the awful terror that occurred less than two days ago hit hard, and very close to heart. There I was, an Indian American, in the midst of people of all races, but of one faith, coming together to console one another and offer up prayers of sorrow, hope, confusion and disbelief. This is my way of sorting out my place in this country at this time of struggle. I am an American. I am an American who has lost thousands upon thousands of brothers and sisters in Christ, brothers and sisters in humanity. I am an Indian. I am an Indian who feels the pain of those Americans suffering the pangs of racism and injustice as a reaction of the American people. The sight of people around me during Mass -- children, youth, adults, and seniors alike -- crying b/c they don't know what else to do in order to express the void they are experiencing within. How could this happen to America?? I was born in the United States twenty-four and a half years agojust a few years after the construction of the Twin Towers of the World Trade Center was completed. To me, it was just another part of the beautiful skyline that we passed numerous times en route to New York or northern New Jersey from Philadelphia, the birthplace of our nation. But now, the memories I hold are much more meaningful. You see, I don't think anyone who has not been here (growing up here or working in this country) can really understand how Americans feel about our country being attacked. Over the years, myself and others have been taunted with slurs and teased by friends of other countries saying that Americans are full of pride and are very arrogant about their nation. But that is something that is engrained in our hearts. And believe it or not, that is what holds us together in unity at this chaotic point in time. We love our country. There is no question about it. I even watched my own parents, who have mockingly put down the people of the U.S., cry in tears as we watched the events unfold. Make no mistake... we are Americans at heart, regardless of our country of origin, regardless of skin color, regardless of religious beliefs. And YES, we are a country that TRULY believes in the power of our God. Many people have condemned the nation as one that is deep in sin. Yes, it's true. But that sin exists just as much in other countries, just not as exposed in the open as it is here. However, make no mistake... we are all God's creation, and He weeps in sorrow for all His lost children. I know someone who was in the building when the crash occurred. He is the fiance of a good friend of mine that I grew up with. Both are Malayalee Catholics, and I have met George several times. I can only imagine what my friend was going through when she found out about the hit...by the grace of God, he made it out in time. I haven't talked to my friend yet directly, but I'm sure we all need time to let the ongoing events digest in our hearts and minds. Who knows when it will all be over. Days? Weeks? Months? Years? One of my co-workers has 4 friends who were working there at the time... he's only heard from one so far. Like this, there are numerous instances... too many to count. But are other growing concerns I have been getting reports of attacks on Pakistanis, Muslims, and Arab Americans in the streets of New York...getting shot... beaten up... all because someone is incriminating them on the basis of their skin color. Them?? That includes me. I have enough reasons to fear my own life because of my ethnicity. What do you say to this, my brothers and sisters? What do you say??? Are you, too, not guilty of hating Americans (blacks, sayips, mathamas) in your heart or judging their character based upon their skin color or cultural background? I am an American, too. Do you hate me also?? Examine your hearts. Examine them well. I say this in closing... God has created each one of us individually, yet similarly. We are all made of the same flesh, same blood, and we all have the same Father. While praying Monday night, the day before the tragedy, I received this Scripture in prayer, which I leave with you for your own reflection -- Romans 8:38-39 -- For I am certain that nothing can separate us from the love of God: neither death nor life, neither angels nor other heavenly rulers or powers, neither the present nor the future, neither the world above nor the world below there is nothing in all creation that will ever be able to separate us from the love of God which is ours through Christ Jesus our Lord. Please pray for our safety. May the Peace of God our Almighty Father, and God of us all, be with you. fede, esperanza, e caritas en Christo, Lisa Jose (Leese) Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA September 12, 2001 ** This mail is
