[JOYnet] Holy Thursday"Jesus washed their feet" John 13.5

2002-03-27 Thread Thomas Mathew

Jesus washed the feet of his disciples

It was biting cold. On a February afternoon around Four O’clock. I was
walking through the monuments of Milan in Italy. I stood staring at the
wall that housed the first painting of the Lord’s Supper. The famous
painting of Leonardo Da Vinci is now restored. I wondered why that painting
attracted the attention of millions of people over the centuries. It is
because the last supper of Jesus became the Eternal Passover meal for us
Christians.

Cleansing before the meal

Before the Passover meal, Jesus cleansed his disciples. He washed their feet
so Jesus could be the light to their path. Before the meal, “Jesus began to
wash the disciple’s feet” John 13.5 as he was conscious that it was time for
him to go to the Father. Jesus knew that it was time for him to go to his
father. Jesus was aware of the manner of death he was going to face. “ Jesus
knew that the hour has come for him to leave the world and top go to the
father” John 13. 1. The night of Passover changed the traditions and the
course of history by the painful betrayal and crucifixion of Jesus. Jesus
had the premonition about his death. This was not a premonition like some or
many of us humans have. Jesus being the Lord of the universe knew
everything, the present, the past and the future. This creator God knew that
it was his hour to face death so that he would be glorified. Jesus accepted
his own death. He washed their feet and said “I have set an example for you
so that you will do just what I have done for you” John 13.15.

The beloveds of God

Jesus had the power and the inner strength to say “I set an example for
you” John 13.15. In this new example of he master washing the feet of the
lesser ones, Jesus showed us humility and service. “I, your lord and teacher
have washed your feet. You wash one another’s feet” John 13. 14. This
washing of the feet was something new for the whole world. This was a very
profound idea that the creator God has set in motion for us, which
exemplifies the all-emptying Divì¥Á 7 ð ¿ É

[JOYnet] The reason for His death

2002-03-27 Thread George Joseph Fernandes

Why did the Lord Jesus, the sinless one have to die?

We can understand how a guilty person would have to die as a result of sin.
Jesus took our sin and died to satisfy the justice of a Holy God in heaven.
Sin demanded a payment - the death penalty. Only Christ could pay it in
full.

All the attributes of God must be in harmony to make Salvation possible.
God's loving nature could not forgive sin until His legal nature was
satisfied. In Calvary all the attributes of God found a perfect solution.

The result of Christ's death was Salvation to all mankind that accept Him as
Saviour.
I Timothy 4:10, '... who is the Saviour of all and especially of those who
believe.'

Could God not just forgive the sinner without the terrible death on Calvary?
Sin has been committed against God. Why couldn't God just blot it out?

He could not for the law of God must be satisfied.

"In the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die." Gen.2:17
'The soul that sinneth it shall die.' Ezekiel 18:4
'For the wages of sin is death.' Rom.6:23

Repentance does not remove the need for punishment for sin. Sin has been
committed and it must be dealt with according to God's own precepts. The
justice and honour of God are at stake and must be preserved. The holiness
of God demands the death penalty for sin.

Thankyou Jesus!

[JOYnet] baptism????

2002-03-27 Thread Shija Daniel

hi everybody,
firstly hope u all have a great blessing-filled easter.

i wanted to get ur opinions about another thing as well-baptism-i.e baptism
in the spirit and not the normal water baptism that we have at birth.
mark 16:16 talks about believing and then being baptised.
i think i had mentioned previously that i'm a marthomite who's being going
to a believers church for a few months now.

well they are placing a lot of importance on this baptism, and though they
would never force me into anything of the sort-i just wanted to know ur
opinions as well-because i personally dont feel its necessary.

Another thing i wanted to know is whether Jesus was baptised at birth before
John the baptist baptised him-i didnt really find any such reference in the
bible.

oh-another thing-i have a prayer request for my friend Sini-she;s having
quite a bit of problem regarding her marriage-she 's 26 now-and she has a
few family probs as well. She's just started growing in the faith now and i
know ur prayers would really help.

so pls dont forget her and to reply to my mail.
thanx a lot

 Dear friends,
It’s after a long time that I am writing a mail or for that matter any mail, and the
reason is that I need your prayer support. My father has been admitted into the

And the sad part is that he has been admitted into a hospital in Mangalore where he
happened to go just for a checkup. Right now there is nobody in the hospital to be
with him. We are here in Ahmedabad. Even my mother is not in a position to be with
him right now.

[JOYnet] Reflections -Good Friday

2002-03-27 Thread jennifer

26-3-02
Dear Friend,
He was a man of simple tastes and modest means. Born into a poor family, he
learned a trade (carpenter, I understand) but never much used these skills.
Instead, he taught, preached and gave comfort to those who were hurting. He
loved his people deeply, without reserve, spoke of justice and love and
asked that we all do the same. And it happened, as he feared it might, that
some of these same people might betray him. People who didn't like his words
decided to kill him to stop the truth from being uttered. You were thinking
that I was talking about Jesus? Actually the person referred to is Oscar
Romero, a Roman Catholic bishop in El Salvador, who was gunned down on March
24th. 1980, while celebrating the Eucharist. Good Friday goes on!
Have a Blessed Friday! - Fr. Jude

Reflections: Good Friday -March 29th. 2002 What's good
about Good Friday?
Readings: Isaiah 52: 13-53: 12;Hebrews 4: 14-16; 5: 7-9; Gospel:
John 18: 1-19:42

The first reading from Isaiah foretells what the suffering servant of Yahweh
will have to endure: "a thing despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows
and familiar with suffering, a man to make people screen their faces; he
was despised and we took no account of him." Yet he is suffering not because
of what he did but because of others. "Ours were the sufferings he bore and
ours the sorrows he carried." It tells the anguished story of those who are
tortured, persecuted and subjected to violence. This reading is a commentary
on the suffering that we can endure at one another's hands.

How do we react to suffering? Some will do anything to avoid suffering "You
can ask me anything but don't ask me suffer I just can't take it!"; others
will grumble and complain about what is happening: " Why do I have to
suffer? All the others are enjoying life and I have the burden of taking
care of my family. Life is so unfair!"; still others will make sure that
everyone knows they are suffering: "If you only knew all that I have to put
up with. If they had only a fraction of what I endure they would have broken
down a long ago. Poor me, nobody cares!"

The suffering servant of Yahweh was burdened with the burden of others yet
he bore it silently and without complaint, he never opened his mouth. He
shows us the way to cope with suffering and violence with non violence and a
silent acceptance, so very different from us. The last part of the reading
reminds us that the suffering servant is not forgotten or abandoned by God.
This is an announcement of belief and faith even in the face of hideous
destruction of a human being. It acknowledges the one who suffers and his
undying hope in God in his sufferings and it proclaims that this kind of
suffering redeems and justifies others.

Jesus has no hands and feet.!
There was a poor peasant family that had worked for several years scrimping
and saving to buy a piece of land of its own. Finally the day came and they
took possession of it. The mother and the half dozen children gathered in
the two room shack that would serve as their home, while the father walked
the length and breadth of their land. He paced it out marking the four
corners as boundaries, praying in joy and thanksgiving as he walked. As he
rounded the last corner and laid a stone in place he noticed something
sticking out from under a bush. He bent and scratched the earth, digging
with his hands and soon unearthed the corpus from a crucifix. It had
obviously been in the ground for some time. Its hands and arms were gone and
its feet and legs missing. It was mangled, scratched cracked and the paint
nearly gone. He picked it up and carried it back in his arms to the house
and laid it on the table.
The family stood around it looking at it in an awkward silence. The father
explained that he had found it on their land. It was the first thing he dug
out of their ground. What should they do with it? Should they take it to the
Church and give it to the padre? Should they burn it? Should they bury it
again? They all stood and looked at it. Finally the youngest spoke: "Father
I have an idea, why don't we hang it in the kitchen and put a sign
underneath it? The father asked: "What would you put on the sign?" There was
along silence and the corpus was hung with care on the white washed wall of
the kitchen and a small piece of paper was tacked underneath by the little
child. It read: "Jesus has no hands and feet. Will you lend him yours?" -
Megan McKenna

The letter to the Hebrews tell us that our high priest can sympathize with
our weakness because he knew suffering. We are reminded that Christ suffered
as we do and yet offered supplications in his agony with tears and loud
cries to God. We are also reminded that "Son though he was, he learned
obedience through suffering. Suffering can destroy those without faith but
suffering bound to Jesus can redeem, give dignity to suffering and restore
others to life.

[JOYnet] We should be be where we are!

2002-03-27 Thread Jase Jon

Isn't it awesome that God meets us right where we are? Wow!

A water bearer in India had two large pots, each hung on the ends of a pole
which he carried across his neck. One of the pots had a crack in it, while
the other pot was perfect and always delivered a full portion of water.

At the end of the long walk from the stream to the house, the cracked pot
arrived only half full. For a full two years this went on daily, with the
bearer delivering only one and a half pots full of water to his house.

Of course, the perfect pot was proud of it's acomplishments, perfect for
which it was made. But the poor cracked pot was ashamed of its own
imperfection, and miserable that it was able to accomplish only half of what
it had been made to do.

After 2 yrs of what it perceived to be a bitter failure, it spoke to the
water bearer one day by the stream. I am ashamed of myself, and I want to
apologize to you. I have been able to deliver only half my load because this
crack in my side causes water to leak out all the way back to your house.
Because of my flaws, you have to do all of this work, and you don't get full
value from your efforts," the pot said.

The bearer said to the pot, "Did you notice that there were flowers only on
your side of the path, but not on the other pot's side? That's because I
have always known about your flaw, and I planted flower seeds on your side
of the path, and every day while we walk back, you've watered them.

For two years I have been able to pick these beautiful flowers to decorate
the table. Without you being just the way you are, there would not be this
beauty to grace the house?

Moral: Each of us has our own unique flaws. We're all cracked pots. But it's
the cracks and flaws we each have that make our lives together so very
interesting and rewarding. You've just got to take each person for what they
are, and look for the good in them.

Blessed are the flexible, for they shall not be bent out of shape. Remember
to appreciate all the different people in your life!

[JOYnet] For all those who suffer

2002-03-27 Thread Jase Jon

" I wonder what the world would be like if there were not innocent people
making reparation for us all...? Today the Passion of Christ is being
relived in the lives of those who suffer.

To accept that suffering is a gift of God. Suffering is not a
punishment.Suffering is a gift-though, like all gifts, it depends on how we
receive it. And that is why we need a pure heart-to see the hand of God, to
feel the hand of God,to recognize the gift of God in our suffering.

Suffering is not a punishment.Jesus does not punish.Suffering is a sign-a
sign that we have to come close to Jesus on the cross that He can kiss us,
show us that He is in love with us by giving us an
opportunity to share in His passion.Suffering is not a punishment, nor a
fruit of sin; it is a gift of God. He allows us to share in His suffering
and to make up for the sins of the world."
