Stephanie Slater was in graduate school when her mother passed away. "Mom had always pushed her children toward higher education," Stephanie says. "Among the seven of us, there are five bachelor's degrees and five masters'-one of my sisters has two masters." Stephanie's mom was a brisk, assertive person too, who hated to stand by and do nothing, when a response was indicated. At least people could try, she felt. "Would it kill you to ASK?" she had told Stephanie more than once-most recently when Stephanie hesitated to apply for college financial aid in the belief that she would be turned down. She had taken her mother's advice---and received a student loan. Now, despite being devastated over the loss, Stephanie decided to continue her courses. It was what her mom would have wanted her to do. One evening a few weeks after the funeral, Stephanie was driving home from a study group meeting in Tampa. It hadn't gone well. An important participant hadn't attended, and Stephanie was upset about it. In fact, she was uncharacteristically irritated over a lot of things lately. Her father had just had a stroke, she was carrying a heavy load of work and school, "even the fact that it was late and dark bothered me," she says. "I continued to stew as I sat at a red light at a busy intersection." Then-suddenly---a little boy walked in front of her headlights. Stephanie was startled. "He was so out of place, and too young to be alone-probably only seven or eight years old," she says. "It was dark, and there were no sidewalks on the side of this road." The child looked dirty and bedraggled too, as he continued past her. What was he doing here? She should get involved, but..what if her intention was misjudged? Or what if she called to him, and he responded rudely? After the day's hassle, she was just not in the mood, and the light was about to change. Then Stephanie heard a strong inner voice: "Well, would it KILL you to ASK?" It was her mother! Stephanie recognized not only the phrase but the attitude--why stand by if something could be done? Immediately, Stephanie rolled down her window and called to the child. "Honey, are you lost?" Another few feet and he would have been gone. But now he stopped, and looked towards her car. "Yes," he said, his lower lip trembling. The light changed. "Stay where you are!" Stephanie pulled around the corner up to the boy, reached out of the window and handed him her cell phone. He was obviously scared, but he punched in some numbers. As Stephanie watched him, she had a sense of unexpected peace and power. This was how the situation was supposed to work out, wasn't it? Her daily cares somehow floated away. Now Stephanie heard the joyful shriek of a woman on the other end of the phone. The boy handed it to her. "I'm so glad you found Michael!" the woman was crying and laughing at the same time. "The police have been looking for him for four hours!" Stephanie and the mom agreed to meet at a nearby video store, and Michael took the phone again to receive permission to get in the car. He had wandered five miles from home, Stephanie discovered as they drove and talked. And he was twelve, far older than she had thought. "What happened?" she asked. "Did you just walk too far?" Michael paused. "I have Tourette's Syndrome," he told her. "Sometimes I stutter. My friends were playing and they started making fun of me, so I got mad, and started walking. All of a sudden, I didn't know where I was. "Stephanie thought her heart would break. Who would make fun of such a precious little boy? Just a few moments after they reached the store, Michael's mother arrived. She wept and hugged him, and hugged Stephanie too. How terrified she must have been, Stephanie thought, as she tried to put herself in the woman's place. And now, how joyous! Maybe God feels that way about us too, loving us just the way we are, rejoicing when we return to Him. She hadn't ever thought of that. It added to the inexplicable serenity she had been experiencing ever since she met Michael. Then he turned to her. "Are you an angel?" he asked. "No, Michael," Stephanie answered, her own eyes filling with tears. "But I think an angel put you in my path tonight." Stephanie is more open to situations now. She often finds herself asking, "Was I put here to help in some way?" She has also learned that in the midst of grief, there can be joy. "I think this event was my mother's way of relieving my stress, and letting me know that she's still watching over me," says Stephanie. "That's my message to others who have lost a loved one: the truth is, they never really leave you." [JOYnet] prayers sustained me
Dear all I am back and thanks to our Sony "Delhi"(I always ask him why he has that wal(tail)) for the mail about my fever. I am back fine and thanks a lot for your prayers especially for the Jesus Youth Gathering.My experiences these last 10 days were really great.its a bit long On Thursday(13th) when I went back the Lord was holding me as i had to face death once very badly. The next day Joy Thomas came to meet me.I was very very weak. We had not arranged the priest for the Eucharistic Celebration on the 16 th for the Jesus Youth Gathering. So I asked him whether we could go to the DonBosco Bhavan and he readily agreed. We went and as I am a past pupil of Don Bosco Irinjalakuda I had no problem in introducing myself.Rev.Fr.Arokiaswamy met us and told that he would come. So see here the miraculous heavenly intervention. I wanted to to go to DonBosco and God gave me Joy and he also took me to the Hospital. On Sunday the big day. Morning Sony chettan and Joseph chettan came. It was so great to have Chocochan Njavallil unexpectedly with us. There were representations from Pondi,Chennai,Erode,Ooty,Madurai and Coimbatore. We had a great session with the Lord but by the evening I was down with fever again. I had great muscle pain and there was Joseph my room mate massaging my leg for about an hour. God was there trough him. The next three days there was my dear friend Ron with me day in and day out.Wenesday was the day on which my dearest DAD and MUM were united 25 years back. I went for the Holy Eucharist and afterwards I called them. Mum was shocked that I was still having fever and asked me to go home and take rest. I went with my sister to Kottayam to her house.I was really missing my dad and mum a lot. My personal life with God.I could not pray but the prayers of this community sustained me. When I had temptations ur prayers helped me out. whenever I went to get something done the Lord went before me and people were there to take me. My room mates esp:Joseph James chettan and Sunil were there always to help me (massaging,cooking and getting all my needs done). Ron was day in day out with me as an angel of God. On sunday we had Coimbatore Jesus Youth,Sony "Delhi" from Pondi, Tessy and Josey from madurai,Simon chettan from Ooty, Joseph chettan from chennai and Siby from Erode all praying for me. We reached here on 20th after a series of miracles and on the 21st and 22nd we were practising the whloe night.. We started the first prgramme of this International tour yesterday in Abudhabi beautifully...The hall was overflowing with people from different nations and the Jesus Youh in UAE had organised the programmes extremely well..we started the programme at 9 pm and it went on till 11.15 pm. The UAE Bishop inaugurated the programme and he was planning to leave soon after that. But for the first time in the history of UAE, he stayed till the end of the programme. Praise God ! We are getting ready for the next programme in Sharjah today. After tomrrow's pgm. in Dubai, we will leave for India and we will start from there on 27th to reach New York on 28th by noon. [JOYnet] Rexband at Abu Dhabi
Hello friends! Thank you so much for your prayers. The Rexband program went off well at Abu Dhabi. The program was highly appreciated by everyone and well received. The program was inaugurated by the bishop and though he had said earlier that he will be leaving by 9.30 he sat through the whole program till 11.30!!. So now you know how well the program was taken by the community at Abu Dhabi. Due to the inauguration ceremony the show started a little later than planned but we did not have any complaints due to this. For the crowd the show was "adipoli". Manojettan is not happy though as he said that technically there were lot of flaws. But the audience was unaware of this.The attendance was good and the crowd was multicultural. [JOYnet] Rexband at Sharjah
Hello all! I guess by now you would had guessed why I am writing today. The Rexband's program at Sharjah went off well. I was there in the crowd. After the introductions and welcomes the program started at 8.30 P.M. It was a good program with Rexband songs interspersed with skits, prayers and witnessing by the members of the band. After the initial songs Saju and Jacob teamed together for a skit. Then Shelton shared how he stretched his hands and felt Gods presence, which was followed by the pro-life skit/mime by Beena chechi. Towards the end of the two hour program we had a prayer session with candles in our hands which was led by Eddy Chettan. I could see people around me fully involved in these prayers and am sure the program helped many who came to obtain blessing from heaven above. Thanks for your prayer support without which we wouldnt have got the band here to perform in such a short notice.
