Khurram,

We went to the product launch of JBuilder 4 recently and was really
impressed with it.
The JBuilder 4 Enterprise edition allows you to do Servlet / JSP
debugging... this includes stepping through codes, modify variable values
etc.
It's expensive though. vbg But you can have the Pro albeit without JSP /
Servlet debugging capabilities. g

Tomcat 3.2beta6: largeFile init parameter

2000-11-10 Thread Christian Mallwitz

Hi,

I read about the largeFile init parameter and set it to true in my
conf/web.xml file. but the static HTML is still in the class file.

The FAQ says: "If the file is really large then all the static html is
stored is a separate data file if the value of this param is set to true."

How large is large and can I modify that value?

Thanks

The latest version of ColdFusion viz. CF 4.5.1 has the feature to run JSP

I hope this mail does help you out as I am quite new to this mailing list.

It's worth checking out the free version of IBM
 VisualAge. You can run
Apache Tomcat within the IDE and debug servlets
 and JSPs. You can even
  modify running code.

  See

I wouldn't call it an IDE for JSPs though, as
there are no features for HTML
designing. I could do with a visual HTML editor
 that knows JSP. Preferably
  free. Any ideas?

Re: bean initialization lock

2000-11-10 Thread Manne Fagerlind

Hello Primoz,

Actually, the code you wrote should work. What JSP engine are you using?

Dani's code might do the trick. If that still doesn't work, you might want
to try using a Singleton (see the book Design Patterns by Gamma et al.) to
make sure that only one instance of the class is ever created.

regards,

Manne

Asunto: bean initialization lock

 Hi!

Is it possible to prevent other JSP pages from initializing multiple
instances of an application scoped bean? I'm using gnujsp 1.0.1 on
 apache1.3.14/Jserv 1.1.2.

I have this code in various JSP pages, which I want to be executed
onlyonce in whichever page that is loaded first:

 jsp:useBean id="abc" scope="application" class=""
 %
   abc.init(application);
 %
 /jsp:useBean

init() method has synchronized access, so it should be impossible for
multiple bean instances to get initialized. The init() method
 starts a
thread which writes to the servlet context log. Yet, I get
 multiple thread
instances if the JspServlet is initialized with multiple client
 requests,i.e. heavy load.

 Help very much appreciated!

 Primoz

Re: can i store an ArrayList in Session?

2000-11-10 Thread Manne Fagerlind

Ginni,

My guess is that you're using a version that does not support v 2.2 of the
Servlet API. In that case you have to use the deprecated methods
putValue(String a, Object b) and getValue(String a) instead (not a long-term
solution, though).

This problem should be added to the faq, if it's not there already. It pops
up on this list once a day or so. :-)

Re: Jsp to retrieve asp session variables

2000-11-10 Thread Walker, Chris

It's a bit of a long shot, but I read an article on http://www.15seconds.com
that showed how to call Java classes from ASP. So ASP could pass data to a
class that writes to the JSP session.

The alternative is to try to find the COM interface to ASP's intrinsic
objects, but I'm not even sure how I'd start to do that, as they are
ready-instantiated in ASP.

** By the way, this message had the sender's addresss in the Reply-to field.
Most list servers use the list address, so the Reply button sends to the
list. Is there a reason for this?

Hi has anyone out there any knowledge of jsp's interfacing with asp's.
I'm working on a site which has to share information, such as
 logins, with
another site. The problem is that our site is running jsp
 servlets ejb and
the other site is all asp. How do I get around the sharing
 problem between
 the two different implementation techniques.
 Thanks in advance

Re: Tools in JSP

2000-11-10 Thread Walker, Chris

No one of the things you list is essential on its own. There are several
Java IDEs that are good for developing beans and servlets. The ability to
debug server code is important here.

But the big issue in server development is decoupling the design job from
the programming job. My view is that the real need is for a web designer's
tool that can make some effort at representing the output of JSP code and
custom tags, so that the final appearance of the page can be designed.

This is obviously a very difficult thing to do - in many cases it's
impossible. Maybe there should be some protocol whereby programs embedded
in HTML can tell an editor what the output might look like.

 Subject: Tools in JSP

 Hi all,

I have been seeing recently lot of mails on JSP tools. Can
 you please let me
 know what exactly
you are looking for from a JSP tool.

 1. Debugger which helps you in identifying errors at the time of
 translation.
 2. Version control Team development
 3. Modeling (!?) or Design
 4. Costs
 5. Light Web Test Server Environment like VisualAge.
 6. Multiple colors to identify different tags at source-level.
 7. Compatibility with differnt web/ app servers.
 8. Formatting of source code
 9. Database access support

Let me know how these JSP tools really justify these issues. Also
which feature of the JSP tool is more important.

 Thank you

 Rajan

Struts stable enough for a production system?

Hi all:

Has anybody used Struts for real development without the whole stuff
crashing down every two weeks? Please, don’t misinterpret me, I think
Struts is a GREAT thing and I’m very exited about it, but the 0.5 version
stuff is scary at best… I mean, we live in a world where most of the time
1.0 versions (and sometimes 2.0 versions) are only over hyped betas.
Comments are very welcome…

Re: where to learn about JSP based dynamic web applications?

2000-11-10 Thread Hines, Bill

Actually, read up on the new "Java Web Start" initiative on Sun's web site
(and in recent trade journals). It is for this type of application, with a
sophisticated UI, and the good part is that it doesn't run under a browser
but has many of the benefits - i.e. it is automatically updated if any code
changes back at the source server, etc.

I am interested in this thread. Can you expand on what you exactly mean?
What is not exact about:
"things that look and act like windows
MVC-based applications, but run in a browser?"

I mean GUI applications built with windows, menus, text and
direct manipulation graphics, running in a browser with no installation
footprint on local machine beyond cookies and browser cache. Examples
include the (now defunct) funiture.com room planner and to a less
extent, hotmail.

Re: Best JSP Tool - JBuilder 3.5/4.0 and Inprise AppServer

2000-11-10 Thread W Paul Waits

I use JBuilder 3.5 Enterprise Ed. which comes with the Inprise Application
Server (IAS). I like the JBuilder IDE and the IAS interface, but give IAS a "B
-" grade. IAS with JBuilder 3.5 uses Servlet 2.0 and JSP 0.92 APIs. without
providing free upgrades. The "new" IAS that ships with JBuilder 4.0 uses
Servlet 2.1 and JSP 1.0 APIs without any means of free upgrades. The FREE J2EE
server uses Servlet 2.2 and JSP 1.1 APIs. What difference does this make? If
your using a servlet with "RemoteDispatcher" and other newer J2EE commands, IAS
won't recognize the method(s) and you WASTE lots of time trying to figure out
what the heck is going on. Debugging JSP's using JBuilder/Inprise is a good
idea; however, Inprise needs to provide much better server upgrade support
before I will consider them for a commercial installation. I would appreciate
other people's opinion regarding Application Servers: Tomcat, JRun 3.0, etc. I
can't find anything written that contrasts the various servers (high end
commercial with EJB/Transaction support versus Tomcat, etc.)

I'm using JBuilder with the J2EE server and things work much better. The only
issues I have dealt with J2EE server is figuring out how to set the
configuration, use the deployment tool and understand the security management
features "read/write" access of files handled with its Server.policy file.
Documentation for J2EE Server beginners is poor in my opinion.

Visual Age for Java for itself does not offer a visual JSP editor. The
Enterprise Edition (the one we're starting to use) comes bundled with
WebSphere Studio, a very capable HTML/JSP editor. You can create JSP's,
link them to a servlet, debug, test, etc.

An amazing resource hungry program.

Rather than writing code for sending a fax, you should look at a service
such as JFax (in the US) that allows you to just send an e-mail to the

Re: Problem with Tomcat 3.2beta

2000-11-10 Thread S Ramakrishnan

Yes the cases match (at any rate, its an NT
system).

The file is under $TOMCAT_HOME\webapps\ROOT
and is named A.JSP.

The JSP file is trivial:

  html
  headtitle Bajji /title/head
  body
 p
 % int x = 5 ; %
 b% out.println("X = " + x); %/b
 p
  /body
  /html

The URL I request is http://localhost:8080/webapps/ROOT/A.JSP

Could it be due to JDK version?
Does Tomcat3.2beta not work
with JDK1.3?

You should get a better error message, but I'm pretty sure the error is
caused by the fact that you use upper case ".JSP"; the standard file
extension for a JSP file is ".jsp", i.e. in lower case. Change both the
file and the URL path and I'm sure it works better.

JSP ContextPath is different than that in my Servlet

2000-11-10 Thread Duffey, Kevin

Hey there.

I have a MVC setup..a controller servlet, passes off to action classes,
populate a JavaBean then forward to a JSP page. Why is it in the action
class, (which is basically a servlet), that the request.getContextPath()
returns the proper value..the web-app context, the path etc. But in a JSP
page, the same call returns an empty string. I don't understand why, if JSP
is turned into a servlet and is invoked the same way..that it would return
nothing at all.

Thanks.

Re: Tools in JSP

2000-11-10 Thread Sherry Hu

Hi Rajan,

For me, I would like to have a tool that let me

1. visually create/design JSP (good GUI, database
access buttons...)
2. conveniently modify code (colorful/well formating,
preview/test page...)
3. easily debug the code (precise error message,
run-time debugging...)
4. virtually manage file/version/bean
,and finally
5. compatibility (web servers, platform, ...)

I have used (Symantec) Visual Cafe (database version)
for applets before, and I think it is pretty
convenient. Is there such tool exiting for JSP?
Thanks!!

[Off-Topic] pre-1.0 releases (was: Struts stable enough for a production system?)

I would just like to note that version numbers mean rather different
things in the open-source world versus the world of commercial software.
Software vendors are usually in a rush to get their products to market, so
in a first release, you can count on there being some bugs in a version 1
release. By contrast, open-source programmers usually do not get paid,
and thus are more likely to be motivated by the prospect of gaining a
reputation for producing good software. So most open-source software
developers do not claim their software to be a "1.0" version until they
are personally satisfied with the product. Many good pieces of software,
such as the Enlightenment window manager for Unix systems, are quite
stable and functional, but have not been declared to be version 1 or
higher because the developers have set higher standards for themselves
than the users have.

If a piece of open-source software is version 1.0, I have a lot more
confidence in it than I do a 1.0 release of a commercial program.

In order to obtain an instance of NumberFormat, you make use of the
static methods of the class (getNumberInstance, getCurrencyInstance(),

 Subject: Best JSP Tool

 Hello everyone,
Thanks a lot for your interest in this discussion.
I especially thank people for giving me references to web reviews of
 products and web links.
It was really helpful but I think still we are not to the
 point we would
 like to be.
Among us some are working on Oracle side, Cold Fusion side
 and some people
working on IBM tools. But what we all want (I Think) is one
tool for JSP no matter what other tools we use for developing
 other business
layer components. It should provide support for the standard JSP features
and for intergration of J2EE framework related components. The
 three possible
 J2EE schenarios coud be
  JSP to EIS
  JSP to EJB (Business Layer)
JSP to HTTP Servlets (HTTP Servlets as controllers)

So I would really like to know of such tool that can make my
 life easy for
adding web content (HTML content) on the JSP page Visually. Secondly It
could provide me with support to code calling my business layer
 or post forms to
HTTP Servlets. Also provide database support.
So isn't any such one tool available in the market. I would
 really like to
have an evaluation version for evaluating the product.
Answering Rajan's question precisely the following features
 could be really
 helpful.

 1. Debugger which helps you in identifying errors at the time of
 development.
 2. Version control Team development.
 3. Design Web Layer if possible
 4. Good JSP/HTML WYSWUG may be Visual Editing Support but little
 java coding is
 always required in JSP pages
 5. Light Web Test Server Environment for unit testing
 6. Multiple colors to identify different tags at source-level.
 7. Compatibility with differnt web/ app servers especially loose coupled
integration (so that it is not dedicated
  for any specific Development environment).
 8. Formatting of source code
 9. Intelli Sense Suuport while editing JSP code (the . or
 ctrl+space bar like
 support while editing)

I hope sharing our knowledge will help us all at getting on
 to one product
that can help us all a lot.
 Best Regards,
 Khurram

contentType=Application always uses the name of the jsp page (o r action)??

2000-11-10 Thread Duffey, Kevin

Hi..

We are inacting a "download" feature on our site..where we create some files
dynamically, and allow people to download them.

First, let me explain how we did it and see if anyone agrees.

We have a MVC setup, so all requests go to a single controller servlet, it
then calls an action class. That action class calls an EJB (or session/logic
class), does the logic to generate a dynamic file (in memory). We then
populate a bean with the text, and finally forward to a JSP page. The JSP
page is simple:

%@ page contentType="application" %
jsp:useBean id="beanName" scope="session" class="..." /
%= beanName.getText() %

So..the question is..how do we use a "decided" name for the dialog that pops
up to save the file? Right now, it says Action.do in the file save-as input
box. We would like to supply a name ourselves that gets put in there.

Thanks.

 Subject: prepared statement problem

   Hi,
I am using a prepared statement to insert values
 into the database
  fields.
Is it always necessary that we should insert
data in all the fields or
  else null values??
for eg. i gave the sql as
   sql ="INSERT INTO test VALUES(?,?)";
when the actual table contained 3 fields.
When i skipped one field it shows the following
 error
   java.sql.SQLException: [Microsoft][ODBC Driver
 Manager] Invalid argument
  value
   Pls give me a solution.
   Thanks ,
   SJ
