Re: new to jsp debugging

2001-01-22 Thread maurice coyle

well, as you probably know, to stop the webserver from the command line,
you cd to /bin and typt the command ./jsadmin user/password
-stop, where user and password are the ones you type into the admin
applet. this stops the server, and then in the same terminal window, if
you type ./httpd&, this will start the server up again. if you leave
this terminal open, the error messages should be output to it.

note that it must be the temrinal window you have started the server
in. if you open a new one, it wont work.

hope this helps,
maurice

Re: new to jsp debugging

2001-01-19 Thread maurice coyle

well, here's the way i do it. i'm running java web server on solaris
and if i keep the terminal window from which i started the server open,
any "System.out.println()" messages in jsps or beans are output to this
terminal window. then, it's as simple as writing a few such lines in
your jsp and finding where they stop printing.

does anyone know if this behaviour with the terminal window is the same
in the iPlanet Web Server?

Re: JSP & Forms

2001-01-08 Thread maurice coyle

could you use a JavaScript function, called on clicking the submit
button which contains the following lines?

newWin = window.open("license.jsp");
return false;

this should open a new window which displays license.jsp and the
download page won't be loaded until the user presses agree or whatever.

if you want the new window to disappear when agree is pressed, just put
this line: onClick='self.close()' in the tag for the agree button.

hope this helps some.

javax.servlet not found in import

Hello,
Whenever i compile a servlet that has an
import javax.servlet.http.*;  in it, i get a "javax.servlet.http.* not
found in import" error message. Is this something to do with my Servlet
API, or my WebServer?

sorry if this is considered off-topic.

deprecated methods

2000-11-14 Thread maurice coyle

hi,
i'm using Servlets 2.1 and i know that the getValue/putValue methods
have been deprecated in Servlets 2.2 in favour of
getAttribute/setAttribute.

my question is why? why would one method be deprecated in favour of
another that seems to do the very same thing? or is there some hidden
functionality that getAttribute or setAttribute adds?

Re: Is there any way to send an Email with an attachment !

2000-11-08 Thread maurice coyle

you have to make a multi-part message and set the second part of it as
the file. construct the rest of the message as normal(from, to, etc.):

MimeMessage msg = new MimeMessage(session);

MimeBodyPart mimepart1 = new MimeBodyPart();
mbp1.setText(msgText1);

MimeBodyPart mimepart2 = new MimeBodyPart();

FileDataSource fds = new FileDataSource(filename);
mimepart2.setDataHandler(new DataHandler(fds));
mimepart2.setFileName(fds.getName());

Multipart multi = new MimeMultipart();
multi.addBodyPart(mimepart1);
multi.addBodyPart(mimepart2);

msg.setContent(multi);

storing session variable

2000-10-26 Thread maurice coyle

hi all,
does anyone know of a good way to store the session variable
(maybe as a cookie?) so that a user can close the session and then come
back later on and pick it up where they finished?

i'm not asking for code or anything, just the general idea.

i'd really appreciate any comments/ideas any of you have on this.

thanks very much.

Re: Cross context sessions

2000-10-18 Thread maurice coyle

and is it possible to save the session variable using this or some other
way, so you could load it back up after closing an application and then
starting it back up again?

now that i write it, it seems a bit far fetched.

Re: Saving a session?

2000-09-28 Thread maurice coyle

hi angus,
sorry to bother you again, but when i am storing the values in the
database, do i have to do it as i add them to the session object, or can
i have the user press a button which will call a jsp page or function
that will extract everything that's in the session object at that time
and insert it all into the database at once?

similarly, when they start up their session again, do i load all the
values back into the session object at the start of the resumed session,
or do i wait until the user asks to see all of the results and then
extract the values one by one?

sorry for all this trouble i am giving you.

Saving a session?

2000-09-28 Thread maurice coyle

Hi everybody (hi doctor nick),

(short version of question):
Does anyone know of a way to save what is in the session object, so you
can resume a session at a later date?

(long version of question):
I am currently developing an application in JSP which uses the session
object quite heavily. The application is a testing resource, where
developers can use it to test an application to see if it is
internationalized correctly. The only thing is, I don't expect any user
to complete all of the tests in one go, so I am going to need a way for
them to save what they have done so far and then come back to it later
on. Is there some way of saving what's in the session object and then
just resuming the session at a later date?

thanks for any replies,
maurice.

I have generated a report using JSP, and i need to allow the user to

Does anyone know if it's possible to send email in this way?

Model 2 Servlet Design

2000-09-12 Thread maurice coyle

hi,
i have a jsp application in development. i have come to the conclusion
that a model 2 (Model-View-Controller) architecture, as currently i have
too many scriptlets that are too long in my jsp page.

anyway, my question is concerning the interface aspect of writing
servlets. do i have to provide implementations for each of the init(),
service(), destroy(), getServletConfig() and getServletInfo() methods?
i realise i need the init() method, but in example is have seen, most
people implement a doPost() method instead of all the rest. if this is
just the technique of these programmers, does this mean that all i need
is an init() method and then whatever other processing i require?

hope my question isn't too unclear.
thanks,

can anyone tell me how, when you've generated responses to form data, you
redirect the content to be stored in a text file for later use?

form processing

2000-08-28 Thread Maurice Coyle - Sun ireland - Software Products and Platforms - Internationalization Engineer

hi,
say if i have a number of forms, f1, f2, etc...

i am trying to have my application in such a way that a user can fill out f1,
click submit, fill out f2, click submit, and so on. when they have completed
all (or some, it shouldn't matter) of the forms, i would like to be able to
display all of the results of the forms they have filled out on one html page.
that is, the html results page would be like this:

f1 results:

result f1a.
result f1b.
result f1c.

f2 results:

result f2a.
result f2b.
result f2c.

and so on..

i hope someone can help and i will greatly appreciate any feedback.

thanks very much,
maurice

Re: Applets directory

2000-08-17 Thread Maurice Coyle - Sun ireland - Software Products and Platforms - Internationalization Engineer

have you restarted the server? when you put a new class in, or change an
exisitng class, you have to restart the sever so it recognises the change.

Re: redirect and forward, the difference

2000-08-11 Thread Maurice Coyle - Sun ireland - Software Products and Platforms - Internationalization Engineer

i have a question about response.sendRedirect.

the code provided on the page below is:
<%  String ls_Absolute_Url = ("http://" + request.getHeader("host") +
"/home/Default.jsp");
/* redirection by browser request */
response.sendRedirect(ls_Absolute_Url);
%>

my question is, where do you insert this code, at the beginning or the end?

in my application, from the original html page, there a number of links off it.
each link leads to a form which is handled by a jsp file. i want the user to be
able to click on each link, fill in and submit the forms one by one and have the
output from each form sent to a new page, call it report.jsp, where the results
generated by all of the forms will be displayed in one place.

is response.sendRedirect the way to go, or is there an easier/better way of
doing this?

thanks,
maurice

hi,
now correct me if i'm wrong, but when i need to change a bean to add a method or

the classes directory, right?

well, this isn't working for some reason. i keep getting this error
(classes/sunexamples/beans is the directory where all the other class files
are.):

java.lang.NoSuchMethodError: sunexamples.beans.Smart: method
setSymbol(Ljava/lang/String;)V not found at
pagecompile.jsp._examples._jsp._samples._copy._err2._jspService(Compiled
Code)
at etcetc (it goes on a bit like this).

does anyone have any ideas?

thanks,
