You're right, gamescope 8c873e35278e68b16080c6ab060be6f5fbd91a7 seems to work
correctly without setting any environment variables and it does not require
VK_hdr_layer to be installed on the system. For reference, the command that I
used was just:

gamescope -W 3840 -w 3840 -H 2160 -h 2160 -f -r 165 --hdr-enabled

My issue from when I originally tested this version was that I was installing
the gamescope layer .so to /usr/lib64/libVkLayer_FROG_gamescope_wsi_x86_64.so
when the icd points to
/usr/local/lib64/libVkLayer_FROG_gamescope_wsi_x86_64.so.

You don't need the HDR layer with latest gamescope commits, it won't do
anything. But yes, with the current gamescope master it works correctly for me,
and when I last tested older gamescope with the Vulkan layer it also worked
fine.

Just to be sure, you have both HDR and wide color gamut enabled in KWin, right?
With wcg disabled it would be kinda expected you'd see odd colors, because
games expect both to be used at the same time (which is one of the reasons why
the checkbox in the GUI always enables or disables both)

I've just reinstalled the layers and tested again with gamescope
f8c873e35278e68b16080c6ab060be6f5fbd91a7 and God of War seems to look alright
now... I guess one of my layers must have been installed incorrectly
previously. Sorry for the noise, closing. For future reference, the commands I
used were:

ENABLE_HDR_WSI=1 DXVK_HDR=1 gamescope -W 3840 -w 3840 -H 2160 -h 2160 -f -r 165
--hdr-enabled -- env DISABLE_HDR_WSI=1 ENABLE_GAMESCOPE_WSI=1

This is the same as what's on @Zamundaaa's blog. Also, HDR using the above
command on my distro's build of 3.14.2 does not seem to work.

The one I've had the best results with is 3.14.2 (which comes in my distro
repos). I have also tried building and using 3.14.3, 3.14.4 and commit
f8c873e35278e68b16080c6ab060be6f5fbd91a7 (these had some strange cursor
behaviour for me in DRM mode). Also, I have tried using your VK_hdr_layer but I
didn't notice any change in behaviour with the environment variables set.

Does HDR work for you on Plasma 6.0.4 with a recent gamescope release? And is
that while using VK_hdr_layer? If so, maybe I can set
VK_LOADER_DEBUG=error,warn,info and post logs to check that layers are being
loaded correctly (though, last I tried this, the layer did seem to be
'inserted').

How recent is your gamescope? It's only since some commits in March that it can
do HDR out of the box, without an additional Vulkan layer

Also, while I'm reporting this bug, I should say that the really great to see
the early adoption of features like this by KDE. Things like this make it, IMO,
the best desktop environment right now.
