Insert an USB stick 2. Open the "Device Actions" (Device Notifier -> Storage Volume -> click the item that represents the USB stick "14,7 GiB Removable Media") 3. Two device actions are popping up - Open with File Manager - Download Photos with digiKam WISH: 1. Show the filesystem type (FAT32, EXT4, NTFS). 2. Have an option to reformat the drive to another filesystem. USE CASE: I tried to copy a 4,3 GiB iso image to the stick and after 4 GB there was an error message (it did not say the exact reason). [plasmashell] [Bug 377253] Show current filesystem and add option to format USB drive
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=377253 --- Comment #2 from Gregor Mi --- What about having "expert" options? In Windows they use the Shift key to show more advanced options. (I personally am not really fond of this key pressing concept but in the field it works fine) On the other hand, reformatting an USB stick is not an uncommon operation: One could add a link to a partitioning program (gparted, KDE Partition Manager, YaST Partitioner). These normally show a warning that formatting a drive is a destructive business. :) When a friend calls me and asks why his/her DVD movie file does not fit on the newly bought big-sized USB stick it would be nice to have something simple to explain. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are watching all bug changes.

https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=365038 --- Comment #2 from Gregor Mi --- Today, I tried to reproduce the behaviour with some external hard drive on two different USB ports (if this has any influence). A few answers down someone writes that only this one line $ echo madvise > /sys/kernel/mm/transparent_hugepage/defrag should be enough and that "madvise" might have less side effects than "never". One related thing is interesting though: when I used an USB stick instead of the drive and I copied 900 MB to it, I watched in dolphin how the new file size was growing. After it reached to target file size (pretty quickly) the job in the notification area did not stop for another minute or so. [plasmashell] [Bug 386361] New: "Switch User": Start new session automatically / Make big icons clickable
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=386361 Bug ID: 386361 Summary: "Switch User": Start new session automatically / Make big icons clickable Product: plasmashell Version: 5.10.5 Platform: Other OS: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: wishlist Priority: NOR Component: general Assignee: k...@davidedmundson.co.uk Reporter: codestr...@posteo.org CC: plasma-b...@kde.org Target Milestone: 1.0 I see some optimization potential in the Switch User area. First, here are two scenarios when the function "Switch User" is triggered (e.g. from the application launcher) (1) If there is only one active session we get this screen: A big [(+) New Session] icon and two buttons below: [Cancel] and [Switch] (2) When there is another session, we have something like: [Avatar of the other user's session], [New Session Icon] [Cancel] and [Switch] For scenario (1) I wonder: if there is only one option ("New session"), why not start the new session automatically? The description of the "Switch User" action already says "Start a parallel session as a different user". So it feels odd to have to do one more click. And: the big New Session icon is currently not clickable. One has to click the relatively small "Switch" button. Intuitively, I am always tempted to click the big "+" icon. For scenario (2) I propose to also make the big icons clickable so that one click automatically triggers the Switch action. Another related observation: When I choose Switch User from the Lock screen and there is an unused session this unused session is not always shown to be chosen (I could not figure out when it is shown and when not). -- You are receiving this mail because: You are watching all bug changes.

This box contains often only unintutive or untranslated language abbreviations (see https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=313082). In the special case for a German keyboard layout for Germany, there are even misleading entries (see attached screencast): "German (Swiss)" which would be found first, only results in "Deutsch (Schweiz)" layout. The correct entry for preselection is "ger" or "Any language". Then the user is able to select "Deutsch" in the layout combobox. So, a German user would be better off not using this preselection at all. But since it is the first thing on the dialog, it looks like this has to be started with. [plasmashell] [Bug 383693] New: Pop-up panel as part of another panel or System Tray
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=383693 Bug ID: 383693 Summary: Pop-up panel as part of another panel or System Tray Product: plasmashell Version: 5.9.4 Platform: Other OS: Linux Status: UNCONFIRMED Severity: wishlist Priority: NOR Component: Panel Assignee: plasma-b...@kde.org Reporter: codestr...@posteo.org Target Milestone: 1.0 I am kind of still struggling to get the following under one hat: 1) Use a number of Plasma applets 2) Don't clutter desktop with applets that are seldom but regularly used (see also https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=382872)) 3) Being able to group several applets that have a common purpose (e.g. there are different system monitoring applets with each are good at a specific task but neither combines all features) 4) Being still able to quickly access the applets (especially those that are only occasionally used) Recently, I try to use an auto-hide panel for different monitoring applets but the downside is that there are only 4 screen edges and on either side it bothers when the mouse is accidentally touching it (which causes the panel to appear) while trying to click buttons or using scrollbars on the current application window. Today, I had the following idea: What about being able to create a panel that can be opened or closed by clicking an icon in the main panel or the system tray? This way, the panel is always out of the way when not needed, can be accessed quickly and is still fully configurable with applets. -- You are receiving this mail because: You are watching all bug changes.

[plasmashell] [Bug 383692] System Tray Settings only reachable by unlocking widgets?
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=383692 --- Comment #8 from Gregor Mi --- I also thought about the "add a settings action to each menu" and also thought about the clutter it would cause :(. (Although clutter seems to me to be a bit better than otherwise hidden functionality.) Was the following idea already discussed? What about adding a general "Settings" item to the system tray (with the typical gear or screw-wrench icon)? This would lead to: 1) one more (non-empty) item in the tray 2) have the settings directly visible 3) no need for right mouse button; the left would be enough 4) have a place for more than just the System Tray Settings, e.g. (my personal favorite) a direct access to the Display Settings (which comes in handy for multi-monitor scenarios). 5) if it was implemented as a QML popup (like most of the other Plasma items) then one could add other settings related items (like System Settings or System Info) and arrange them in a nice way (e.g. tile buttons; similar to the customizable area of the Android drop down settings panel [1], but not necessarily with the user-customization feature) [1] https://img.gadgethacks.com/img/63/66/63581733499443/0/add-custom-shortcuts-your-quick-settings.w1456.jpg -- You are receiving this mail because: You are watching all bug changes.
