[kde-freebsd] Keyboard problems and crashes following upgrade to 4.3.5

2010-03-01 Thread David Southwell
I reported problems following an upgrade ro 4.3.5 in a previous thread:
kde4 Upgrade to 4.3.5 -problems

The major problem was solved (kde would not load) BUT I am now left without
a working keyboard although the mouse works and total system crash in a
specific kde4 situation.

Now after kde4 loads with usual plasmas no keyboard input was possible
despite the following entries in /etc/rc.conf

hald_enable=YES
dbus_enable=YES

When I say no keyboard there is a response to Function keys!

I wanted experiment. I logged out using the mouse. Then I plugged in an
another keyboard (this time on the USB bus). Tested that both kbs worked
worked (before starting x) on a normal console and then

% startx

produced a total system crash!

I removed the additional keyboard, after booting to single user mode and
running fsck tried startx again.

Kde started fine. However still no keyboard function.

Logged out and tried
% startx
again -- system crashed again!!!.
So the crash does not seem to have anything to do with the second keyboard
but a lot to do with logging out of X and trying to log in again.

Does anyone have any clue here?

Again this is freebsd 7.2 p3 amd64 on intel quad core.

Thanks in advance

David

OK solved the kb problem -- I removed the file

.kde4/share/config/kaccessrc

and now we have a working kb!!!

Now to investigate the crash issues!

[kde-freebsd] kde4 crash scenario post update to 4.3.5

2010-03-01 Thread David Southwell
i Guys

Thanks in advance - for some help here -- I could sure use some.

I am hoping someone could help me along a bit here.

As my recent posts show I started with quite a number of kde problems
since the upgrade to 4.3.5.

They were:
1. kde4 failed to load properly. Solved by first inserting the new path for
startkde in xinitrc then by deinstalling, recompiling and reinstalling
soprano and oxygen-icons. Then recompiling kdebase4-runtime.
2. kde keyboard would not function. Solved by deleting
.kde4/share/config/kaccessrc

3. I am left with

Total system crash in the following scenario.

(a) User logs in
(b) startx
(c) kde4 loads and use works the session
(d) user logs out x session terminates.
(e) user attempts to start a new x seession with:
(f) startx
(g) system crashes

Necesaary to reboot the system in single user mode, run fsck -y and then
bring the system up multi-user!!

Does anyone have any ideas about this one??

Freebsd 7.2 p3 amd64 on intel quad core

Thanks in advance

David,

What video card are you using? Are you using NVIDIA's? The reason I ask
is that I had this problem on AMD64 FreeBSD8 and have reported to NVIDIA.
The system would crash on log out of X. This was resolved by using an
older video card (still NVIDIA).

The card is a winfast PX7800GT providing openGL with dual DVI. The crash
problem was not present before upgrading to 3.4.5 so I need some convincing
before assuming it is the video card.

It seems more likely that it is something introduced in 3.4.5 or some
configuration necessities with which I have not complied!!! The latter is more
likely than the former!

That being said it supports nvidia sli technology and nvidia nview.
