I am not trying to rankle any feathers of all of you that have been doing this and involved with homebuilding and EAA for many years. I have a great respect for you and have so much to learn from you. I have learned so much from Mark Langford's web site and so many others. Just think about this... If it weren't for EAA, homebuilders would have no unified voice with government and no representation with the FAA. Would there even be a Sport Pilot category if it weren't for EAA? And all of the workshops, seminars and on-line resources that EAA has. I was very surprised to discover how big EAA is. Because of its size there are benefits and drawbacks. I'm sure that "things aren't the way they used to be". Well, times change. Get over it. In my humble opinion EAA is a very wonderful organization that I am proud to support. There is so much good being done for so many aspects of aviation. If you are not happy with the direction the organization is taking why not try to use your experience and influence to make a positive change instead of complaining and quitting? Just don't expect to get your own way all the time. Just my "new-guy" perspective. Dwight Hapeman
KR> Home from OSH
NetHeads, I'm back from OSH also...back since Tuesday afternoon. I had a 30-35 mph headwind going up, so it took 5.5 hours of flying time. My return trip was a lot more exciting, taking 7 hours of flying time (plus another headwind), and lot of time picking my way through the thunderstorms and clouds. Joe's got me beat on that one! I had the pleasure of landing at the same airport twice during a 20 minute time span, and the second time I gave up and drove to the local Chinese buffet for lunch. Things were good enough to fly through afterwards though (at least I could fly mostly southward), so I eventually made it home, and like Joe, a little better educated about flying through bad weather. There's nothing like hearing the AWOS forty miles ahead to the south reporting ceilings of 0-400 feet, and lightning northwest and northeast! Unfortunately, my OSH was so quick that the only view of WW's tent was propping the canopy up after a strong wind had knocked out a few uprights. So not much Corvair activity for me, other than flying in and out behind one, and showing it off to the KR builders who dropped by after the KR Forum Monday afternoon. It was great to spend time with Joe, Mark, Larry Howell, Ron Willett, Pete Klapp, Willie from South Africa, and a lot of other KR and Corvair guys we met up with over the couple of days we were there. I'm not famous for being a social butterfly, but I did spend a lot more time visiting with KR pilots and builders than I did looking at other more typical OSH stuff. I have to admit that the landing of White Knight Two only garnered 30 seconds of my time, as I took a picture of it landing from where I stood next to my KR. The biggest news from me on OSH this year is that both Joe Horton and I bought oxygen cylinders. Now nobody can look at me askance for flying too high. High altitudes don't bother me as much as most people (probably due to liviing a "clean life", and all that cycling I squeeze in, but maybe I can still see in color at 17,500' from here on out. I was the first guy off the ground Tuesday morning (at roughly 6:05AM), and make no apologies for heading out early. I had every intention of making a major meeting that I eventually missed due to the weather, but I did make day two of the meeting. I may not have much of a life, but I do have a job. When I left OSH, I took a rare sunRISE photo to the east. See the photo at the top of http://home.hiwaay.net/~langford/sunsets/ for an early morning view of Lake Michigan south of OSH. I like the way the cloud banks are arranged in rows, as if planted that way. I'm back on Delta flight 812 on Sunday, but will be back in time for the KR Gathering. I do make my own schedules... KR> POH for KR-2
Dave, No, not something you can buy off the shelf. Each KR-2 is going to be a little different. If your KR-2 is registered with the FAA (has an "N" number) and has it's Airworthiness Certificate, its "Operating Limitations" would have been issued along with the certificate. That document plus weight and balance data would be important things to have, and would constitute most of what could be called a POH. KR> Rudder turnbuckles locations
Hey builders. What is the general consensus on the location of the turnbuckles for the rudder? Putting them at the pedals could be hard to get to but would clean up the outside. I have a removable forward deck and header tank. Putting them at the rudder horn makes them accessible.? Although the depth of the AN 161 fork?doesn't look like it will be enough to install a bolt without trimming my horn. I have used nylon tube set in blocks along the inside of the fuselage for running the cable in and most likely wont do the removable turtle deck (which is built but not installed) so I don't want to or can't put them behind the seat. Any good comments? Steve Phillabaum Shorter Alabama Trying to get back to building after two years.

Hello there, Ive noticed over the last several months that a couple of the guys that post here are from Indiana, I would like a rough Idea of how many KR's there are in Indiana, and their locations. I would like to possibly arrange at some point to come see one if possible. KR> Home from OSH
Hey Guys, Just to let everyone know I made it home safe from OSH 27 hours after I departed. It was an adventure in it's self. I won't bore ya with all the details but I learned a lot about flying long X-C with bad weather. My total flight time for the whole trip was about 15 .6 hours and likely over 2000 miles covered. As for the people that still want more KR time at OSH, all I can say is that I feel that I did my part. I posted my cell phone number before I left, we let it be known what days we would attend and I stayed a day longer than I should have with the weather that I had to deal with. I have limited resources, and limited vacation time. I choose to spread both out over many events over a year and yes OSH is an endless money pit with no incentive to make a week of it. If it is KR you want get to the Gathering. If it is Corvair you want there was vendors available long after we left and I still try to attend those events at other times of the year. I have no vested interest in either -- Only the desire to have others join the group of flyers (and I enjoy the hell out of the company of all of those guys) Lee and Glidden-for the record you were missed and we did talk about you anyway. KR> Oshkosh
I have never been to Oshkosh but I do intend to go some day/year. I have been to Sun-N-Fun several times and will continue to go, maybe not every year but I will return because aviation, to me, is much more than just a KR. 2009 will be my 10th year coming to the KR gathering. My KR is not y et flying and I have to say I learn something new each time I go to the gathering. The first few years was to learn about KR but now it is more people and the friends I have made over the years that continues to draw me to the gathering. The KR is a wonderful airplane but the people who build and fly the KR are great people and fun to be around. Jack Cooper

The KR community operates on the financial fringe of the sport aviation spectrum. It would be nice if we all had the time and money to attend the worlds largest aviation event and spend the entire week. Unfortunately most of us have neither the time or money to do so. Oshkosh has grown to the size it is because it meets the needs / wishes of hundreds of thousands of people world wide. Even if you think it has outgrown what we wish it to be, you have to admit that a great deal of the advancement in sport aviation that we enjoy today came out of Oshkosh. I've not attended for at least twenty years now but the fact is that it draws people , aircraft, and vendors that you will see nowhere else. Many companies and vendors schedules revolve around Oshkosh. It can't be everything to everyone. As for the KR Gathering, this will be my twentieth consecutive year to attend and acting as host since 2004. I think everyone will admit that we enjoyed Lee's participation when he was able to attend. To say it is strictly a social event not only misses the bulls eye but misses the entire target. The social aspect is certainly a huge part of the Gathering as many of us get to see each other only once a year and it gives us a chance to catch up on relationships that were born at previous Gatherings. To make my point, I think Lee is forgetting the many hours spent on the flight line with KR's opened for inspection, picture taking, questions answered by the builders, and assisting fliers with problems that developed far from home. Then there are the hours spent by builders pouring over photo albums and getting ideas for there project back home, exchanging and selling parts and projects, and the several forums held to answer builders question. Stick time is given to the lucky few that can get it prior to making the first flight of their own project or in some cases rides given to wives and girlfriends of builders to help "grease the skids" of their project back home. Last but not least is the motivation factor the Gathering injects directly into the blood stream of builders as they see the KR's making high speed passes round and round the pattern. And if that were not enough, there is still the social aspect. Setting around the campfire in the evening enjoying the "root beer", the talk is still more KR's !! I am a bit puzzled by Lee's comment "I would have a good time flying to a CX4 group deal if BOB G would be there". That sounds to me like he would attend strictly for the social aspect of the event. Why then condemn Airventure and the Gathering for being strictly "social events"? I hope Lee's comments were strictly the result of a bad weather day when he couldn't fly his KR and that we see him at future Gathering. Have a good day... Larry Flesner
