KR> Wing Construction

2009-08-29 Thread Ross Youngblood
Hi Mike,
I'm responding to your post RE Wing construction. I built my
wings per plans, but if I had to do it over, I would pressure test the
wing fuel tanks prior to closing the underside of the wing. I had
some leaks that I had to patch the hard way... by cutting open the
wing and filling, then patching. Lots of sanding to do that.

If you put an extra layer inside the wing, it will add weight. If you
have the wing tanks, you get the extra weight anyway. I think if I
had it to do over again, I would look into the wingskins. They look
beautiful, and save hours and hours of sanding (if you can afford
them). If not, building the wings was a lot of "fun" excluding all
the dust I made in the process.

Ross
Hoping to scrape up $ to by my old KR-2 back eventually.

Quite often Scott Wick or somebody from there will make a run over to the
Gathering bringing hard-to-ship orders over in a truck. I'm not sure this
has been addressed, but if you'll call Wicks and ask to speak to Scott, I'll
bet that's about all it would take to get him to show up and bring catalogs,
spars caps, whatever. Shipping becomes free at that point.

I'd like to spend a few minutes with Scott myself...just to bend his ear
about how pathetic their online ordering system is...once again...

My way works, and so does the plans way. I've seen some very nicely done
wings done the plans way, so it definitely works, and is probably quicker
than the way I did it, and maybe a little lighter as well.

I wrote this early this morning, but didn't send it until now. I guess that
makes it a "me too" regarding Darren's post...

Mike.

I built my wings as per ML's method. Not sure if the extra layer of glass
adds weight as the middle of the wing no longer is filled with a big hunk of
foam. The foam does not flex down when sanding the contour so I wouldn't
worry about that. Whilst there are some things I would do differently next
time around, I would do the wing skins same way again. I tossed up the idea
of installing a small locker in each outer wing but never got around to it.
If I decide to do it down the track it is a much simpler job to cut a "door"
than to hollow out and glass the inside.

That's the way I have built my skins but the standard method works too and I
would guess takes less time.

Cheers.

KR> Wings, Best Way ?

2009-08-29 Thread MICHAEL SYLVESTER

A major milestone was reached yesterday on the construction of my KR2S. With
the front deck, canopy and aft deck completed it was time to go big. So I
cleaned up the basement enough to turn her sideways between the center supports
for the house and now I can do both wings at one time. The wings will run the
length of my side of the garage with only the tail sticking over to annoy my
wife. Now for the question. After looking at M.L. site and several others,
Which is the best way to construct the outer wing ? Per plans or with the extra
layer of glass inside the wing. Does this add weight ? If you do it this way
does the foam flex down in the middle when sanding the contour? If you did
yours this way, would you do it that way again? Any answers would be helpful.
