You really do not want to take the chance with a leaking tank. A fuel
leak inside the wing could ruin your day, permanently.
Be sure it's safe.Cheers.

KR> Food at the Gathering

2009-09-15 Thread David Mullins
Steve,

The airport Restaurant (Grandma's Landing) has a lunch buffet from
11am to 2pm Daily. I don't know about supper time though. I am
here in Mt. Vernon already and can take you to Ryan's Restaurant. You
can eat enough food there to last you all weekend.

I haven't talked with "Granny" this week yet but plans are to have
food available at the airport restaurant all three meals on Friday
and Saturday and I think she plans to be open for us Thursday evening
also. I'll check again. One way or another we'll get you
fed. Judging from the number of "large" and "extra large" shirts
ordered I'm guessing we've not had anyone starve yet at a Gathering. :-)

KR> Corvair Head Studs

Thanks, I'm looking into that. I believe that the nuts are heat treated
(hardened) and many nut splitters are not suitable for those types. Your
suggestion about cutting them with a dremel tool may have some value.

Gathering attendees,

I got to hug on "Granny" today and she said they will have restaurant
open Thurs lunch / dinner, Friday light breakfast / lunch / dinner,
Saturday full breakfast, lunch / banquet. She will have sandwiches
available between meals. I would encourage everyone to eat as many
meals as possible at the airport to give her the business. She is
putting a lot of effort in to taking care of us. She wouldn't mind a
hug from any and all attendees either. :-)

Subject: Re: CorvAircraft> head nuts

Don't forget the old tried-and-true method of drilling two small holes into
the nut on opposing sides of the stud (hole parallel to the stud), and then
splitting the nuts with a
chisel. This completely eliminates the possibility of backing out the
studs, but you have to be a little careful not to chisel up the threads. I
split every one of my upper head studs because they were so rusty they were
pretty much welded to the studs. It took me about 2 hours, but my threads
look great and my studs are still firmly in place. You'll never get a
"proper" nut splitter down in the area around the nut.
There is a CorvAircraft list where this would've been asnwered almost
immediately. Send a message to corvaircraft-j...@mylist.net to join. Mark

KR> VW Question

2009-09-15 Thread Al Hawkins
Per Steve Bennett's manual.

Only use 30W or 10w30 in a vw.
The VW oil control springs rely on 30W oil to open the passage to the
oil cooler when the oil is at the correct temp.
By using 20w50 the viscosity is thicker which causes the oil control
spring not letting oil thru the cooler until a higher temp is reached.

KR> VW oil viscosity

2009-09-15 Thread laser...@juno.com
Dan said:

> "I have searched Steve Bennett's site looking for the recommended oil

I think Steve reads the list when he has time so he'll probably respond -
although an email to him would get you an answer quicker.
ifly...@msn.com

When I got it from him, Steve was using NAPA synthetic 10-30 in the 2180
he put on the KR-1½. I have continued with that oil, although I did go
up a notch to 15-50. I recently had an oil temp problem that turned out
to be the gauge reading high when nighttime electrics are on (strobes,
beacon, etc.) But before I figured that out, I went through several
possibilities.

Checking with Steve, he said the 15-50 weight oil does not cool as well
as the 10-30, for the same reason we use a thin liquid in our car
radiators to dissipate heat. So I changed the oil back to 10-30 . . .
but that didn't help the problem since the oil temps were fine all along.
But that's something to keep in mind if anyone is running high oil
temps.

There are some VW car guys who are quite fanatical in their belief that
one should only run straight 30 weight in a VW. I may be wrong, but I
think Rex Taylor was of that persuasion too.
