I was fortunate enough to pick up a Todd's Zodiac canopy locally.
(Australia).
This was way too large for the KR and in itself has the bubble look which I
wanted to avoid. I was after a streamlined appearance with a flatter top
and more vertical sides As the canopy was so large and wide, the curvature
over the top was less pronounced than a smaller blown one. It was this part
that I cut out and used in my KR. It's easier to see what I am talking
about in this photo. http://www.kr-2s.com/images/krnet/zenith.jpg And I
still had to pull the sides in a little to meet the canopy frame!
Here's how it looks finished http://www.kr-2s.com/images/yellowtape_600.jpg

Food for thought.

Cheers

KR> fuel burn vs Hp

2010-04-21 Thread mbz...@comcast.net
You guys might be over thinking this.

In theory that calculation is possible if.

You have perfect carburation (but you don't)
you have perfect timing (but you don't)
Your manifolds are 100% efficient (but they aren't)
your fuel burn is based on top output at stp (but it isn't, its an average)

and so on. If we think about it, we can add at least 50 more things that will
affect your fuel/hp ratio.

but if your setup was perfect than 2gph for 100hp is closer.

KR> fuel burn vs Hp

2010-04-21 Thread joe.kr2s.buil...@juno.com
OK, thanks, I'll do one more for the record tonight if it is calm enough. That
would be a full throttle run at say maybe 1500 ft. I know what every other
number should be at 1500 but i have never looked at the fuel flow because I
didn't care how much fuel I was using to eek out every mph that I could. The
other numbers should be 177 mph true, @ 3370 rpm. just need to add gph.

so Based on my calcs, HP= G/h * 6 / BSFC or 7.8*6/.5= 93.6 Hp
BSFC for a low comp carby engine is ~ .5 @ max power ~.45 at max TQ.
@4.8 gph you are getting ~ 57.6 Hp

Paul.

Rick Human wrote:

That's what I don't like about the Todd's canopies that I've seen..they are
more bubble like than the Dragonfly. And as for optical qualities, I don't
know of anyplace on my Dragonfly canopy that isn't perfect.
That also goes for the shape, so I agree completely. I left one off the
list...the Lancair canopy. I doubt they're cheap, but Allen Buzza in Perth
has one that he bought damaged (and therefore unusable on a "proper"
Lancair), but he just cut off the bad part and what was left over was
perfect for his KR. Something else to keep in mind. Another consideration
is thickness. The Dragonfly is 2/3 of the thickness of the official KR2S
canopy that RR was selling, which makes the Dragonfly lighter and more
flexible, and therefore easier to bend to different shapes, if that's a
consideration. Resistance to bird strikes wouldn't be as good though, not
that I worry much about that. My biggest concern with birds is killing my
prop during takeoff or touch-n-goes. FYM has a flock that seems to live out
in the middle of the runway. So far they've been quick enough to get out of
my way. I sincerely hope their luck continues...

KR> N774A damage report

2010-04-21 Thread Brad Ankerstar
On 14 April at 2:10 pm, N774A hit the ground at about 75 mph after I
realized it was falling out of the sky. I had flown a reasonably decent
pattern and was headed right for the numbers but the airspeed read 80. As I
applied power to arrest the sink, I hit the ground and bounced. When I hit
again, the gear collapsed and I became a sled. Stayed on the runway and,
even though everything that wasn't fastened down flew all over the cockpit,
I was not injured.

The prop, of course, is kindling. The cowl was scuffed up slightly, the
belly from the main spar forward was also significantly scuffed, and the
firewall came loose on the top and sides. The fuel tank front mount kept
the firewall on the plane.

The landing gear was essentially undamaged. It did not collapse, as in --
retract. What happened was that all 8 of the nuts on the gear leg attach
bolds were stripped off. That allowed the gear legs to fold sideways up
into the wing which prevented a second bounce. Of course, the top skin on
each wing was pierced on both sides of the main spar. If I was so inclined,
I could bolt the gear legs back to the spring, replace a tire that got
scuffed, and get on with the wood and glass repairs. However, I am not so
inclined so I am now in the market for a set of Diehl tricycle gear, plus
wheels and brakes, and a prop. A project, on the gear might be interesting.
If anyone has something you think I could use, please contact me off the net
at ankerst...@embarqmail.com.

For the record, N774A is a single place KR 2 with a 1835 cc VW. (ran good
but the revflow carb is too big) It had a Hegy 52x44 prop which was at
34-3600 rpm for the whole flight. Empty weight is 587 lbs and gross is 950.

I remember speeds from 65 to 135 while I orbited HAO for about 40 minutes,
trying to find the courage to try to get down. Remember, I was doing taxi
tests
and was no where near ready to fly --- obviously. I pretty much wasted all
that
time being very gentle trying to keep it in the sky when I should have been
doing
some actual test flying. Anyway, back to work again. I have long thought,
and now I'm
convinced, that these are sturdy little birds.

With a couple miracles, we will be at the next gathering. Without miracles,
I'll drive.

I bought a KR2 project (#6840) and am busy changing it into a KR2S.

I love flying. I have build a Glasair Sportsman on the two week to taxi

I have been building for 6 months and found the information on the KRNet.org
very helpful, but still get stuck on more detailed stuff, and that is why I
would like to join.
