I don't remember...that was a long time ago! All I can tell you was the
inner diameter was something just large enough to clear the 1.25" tubing,
and with a large diameter. I just looked through the McMaster Carr catalog
(they have hundreds of different kinds and sizes of washers) to find a thin
one with a hole size that fit. See http://www.mcmaster.com and search for
"washer". I probably used something like their number 91083A039 , which you
could also just enter into the "FIND" field.

KR> Wing Tank Progress

2010-10-10 Thread Dan Heath
Yesterday, I worked all day, with a fellow builder, to build these fittings
for the wing tanks. We made the tank to cap wing skin level fittings and
the fuel probe fittings.

I messed up one of the fuel cap fittings, so I will have to order new
stuff, and build a new one. Since I have seen two of them made, I can
probably make this one with the exception of the welding.

So, another 12 or so, hours racked up on this project.

be finished soon.

KR> Stub Wings - Plywood Skin

2010-10-10 Thread Dan Heath
Not in the plans. I have heard of some covering with plywood, and have
thought about it myself, but I do not believe that I have ever seen one
flying. So don't let your heart be troubled and rip off those old plywood
skins.

KR> Stub Wings - Plywood Skin

2010-10-10 Thread Jon Finley
Hi all,

The project that I have has plywood covered stub wings but I can find no
mention of this in the plans. Was this ever considered an acceptable
option?

The answer to the above probably doesn't matter as I do not care for the
quality of construction so am going to remove and reconstruct the stub wing
skin. However; knowing the answer might make me feel better while tearing
them apart! J

Thanks!

Back when I first started flying my KR, I was in the process of going from
gaffer's tape gap seals to some that I made up from fiberglass layups.  But
between the two, I decided I needed to fly a little, so I flew one day without
any kind of gaps seals at all between stub wings and outer wings.  A nasty
surprise awaited on takeoff...I was worried that I'd take out the trees at the
end of the runway!  I was shocked at how much the climb rate was affected by
the
absense of gap seals.  I had a 1.5" gap in there, and it made a huge difference.

A recent Barnaby Wainfan article in Kitplanes magazine explained the physics
behind that phenomenon, and a 1/2" gap can kill off something like 40% of your
lift.  The gist of it is that you basically have three wingtips on each side
now, along with the associated lift penalty.  I mention this to keep you from
making the same mistake I made...and now you know why I reduced my wing gap
down
to 1/16" recently, and it's currently covered with gaffer's tape...
