That's also the reason I totally eliminated the header tank.  All my
fuel is in the outer wing panels except for the lines and pumps in
the fuselage.  I don't like the thought of having a crash, the
fuselage coming apart, and me getting soaked with 100LL.  Not a
pretty vision. :-(

My entire KR, except the cowling, was finished with "deck cloth". It
is a very fine weave, like a silk stocking, for those of you old
enough to remember silk stockings. :-)

The weave is MUCH finer than show in the photo.

hello netters,i am not sure that put on peel ply as the final layer to reach a
smooth surfaces is the best, or a good solution.A employee of Schempp-Hirth,the
famous glidermanufacturer, told me that they use only peel ply in areas where
aditional layers are connected ,after the layups before are cured ,to save
time-consuming sanding. After you weted out the glas-layers and try to lay up
peel ply,in most cases it will be neccessary, to ad small amounts of resin to
roll-,or squeeze on the peel--and this ads weight. The better way, to get a
smooth surface,is to lay up a very light glas-ply with a different wafe
(ie.linen-wafe).This lay up will be weted by the remaining resin.A further
adventure of this way(I did it and i swear by this method) is ,when you smooth
down the surface later on,you have a exact reference image of your glas lay ups
due to the different fill directions.( you avoid to sand down the structural
lay ups)
My conclusion of this method is:you ad strength and earn safety and save
weight!!

And that "significant CG change" is in the wrong direction...the plane is at
its highest instability of the flight when it comes landing time, which is
the most difficult and critical phase of the flight. That's one reason I
don't have a header tank. The other is the fuel in close proximity to lots
of wires and electricity, not to mention my vital organs. You've probably
heard that before from me though. There's more of that kind of stuff at

KR> header tank hold downs

2011-01-17 Thread Teate, Stephen
"Make sure you accurately calculate the
C.G.range for safe flight. It will shift aft considerably during flight."

You are absolutely correct. Add to this the known flight characteristics of
KR's with aft C.G.'s and my self-imposed limit of 2" from the aft C.G. limit
and you end up with a real challenge. I have done preliminary C.G. calculations
and set up a Excel spread sheet to make it a little easier. Since I intend to
be liquid cooled the tendency is to be a little nose heavy and I will locate
the battery to achieve just that. However, I may find that after flight testing
with just me aboard and flying locally that I can only fill the tank 3/4 full
and unless I plan a long cross country with baggage in the aft compartment may
not be able to fill the tank. Your point is noted KR's with large header tanks
are subject to significant C.G. changes that need to be addressed and I will do
that. In fact, during flight test I intend to evaluate just how my particular
airplane performs with a more forward C.G.

Thanks for the input,
