KR> Aircraft Tax Question
In my negotiations with the County Tax people just south of you I took pictures of my airplane in a disassembled state and included some early articles from Kitplanes and other magazines which contained the info that the plane has a VW engine and can be built for $3000 in materials - you can find all of that online. Include the Popular Mechanix cover story with a picture of Ken Rand and his original KR-1. Put a nice package of this info together for them - educate them. They only know RV's and factory builts when it comes to planes so you have to inform them of just how inexpensive and special the KR is - made out of styrofoam and plywood. This is a better route than asking owners what they think their airplanes are worth. We all think our planes are worth at least $25K. Mike Groupon Official Site 1 ridiculously huge coupon a day. KR> Aircraft Tax Question
Hello KR Netters; Recently the Los Angeles County Tax Assessor's Office unilaterally and without documentary justification valued my KR-1 at $15,000 and have proceeded to tax me at that rate. I purchased this aircraft in marginal flying condition and paid substantially less than what they have valued the aircraft. As such ... I filed an appeal with the County of Los Angeles. In my attempts to obtain documentary evidence to demonstrate the reasonable market value of my KR-1 at the hearing, I have found that information regarding price and sales of KR-1's is scarce? In an effort to sort this matter out and pay a fair property tax , I'm appealing to those of you who own KR-1's to send me an email (off list) indicating what the approximate fair market value of your KR-1. Alternately it would be helpful for any of you to tell me what you think my KR-1 is worth (in the blind). It has a 2180 vw GP engine with 500 hours on it. Roughly 700 hours on airframe. (No Log Books) It has no electrical system. It's tricycle gear. The Exterior and the Canopy are a 7 out of 10. It has no transponder and the Radio is a Handheld. Any assistance on this will be greatly appreciated. Marc Baca East Los Angeles, CA mbf...@yahoo.com 1N31SB http://www.greatplainsas.com/vwsbailey.html
KR> Question about ailerons
All, The standard (as per plans) ailerons appear to have a differential action (i.e. one side goes down less than the other side goes up). I notice on Mark Langford's site he's built Frise type ailerons to counteract adverse yaw. Is this instead of or as well as the differential action? I'm considering using a simple push-pull (Teleflex) cable to operate the ailerons (similar to the arrangement in a Jabiru), but this would make a differential action difficult to achieve. If I can eliminate the need for differential ailerons by doing something similar to what Mark has done, I may go that way. Any advice or comparative flying experience would be appreciated, as would 'non-religious' (i.e. it's bad because it's bad) views on the idea of using push-pull cables. KR> Nose Gear Pictures
Netters, I am trying to workout some questions about the nose gear. I would appreciate I could get few detailed pictures of some currently mounted. Also, I would appreciate any information regarding mounting instructions (other than the ones that are on the Diehl website). Had some nose gear issues on N5834 (Porkopolis) and I'm trying to remount the nose wheel. Thanks, Chris Corbine

KR> seats to consider
www.sportsmansguide.com sells folding seats made for boats that look light and maybe adaptable to aircraft. Other companies no doubt sell them also. These have cushions and look pretty nice. They also are not that expensive. They probably could be mounted on a rail system to provide forward and back adjustment. If they are suitable, they could save a lot of work and look decent also.
KR> Re: Component weight
I have Diehl skins with built-in glass 10.6 gal. fuel tanks. Outer wings weigh 68 pounds each, ready to fly, including outer WAF brackets, AN3 bolts, aileron, 2.6-pound balance lead, landing light, position & strobe, tie down bracket, fuel tank vent, fuel gauge sender, quick drain, paint and wing wiring. Sid Wood Tri-gear KR-2 N6242 Mechanicsville, MD, USA smw...@md.metrocast.net -- I believe that the Diehl are a bit heavier. I had stock built on my first KR, and they were about 40# and these are closer to 50. I would weight them for you, but they now have a 22# fuel tank in each wing. Daniel R. Heath - Lexington, SC - Phil, Is that he complete wing panel with spars, fittings, paint etc.? Just trying to get a comparison on my built up wings. I've always thought I could save some weight if I replaced mine with the Dan Diehl skins ( vacuum bagged) but haven't been able to confirm how much I could save. Thanks Chris Gardiner KR2S- 220 hours total on GPAC VW2180 Thanks. Youre the first person to give me some useful information. I have wing tanks and Dan Diehl wing skins They weigh 50 lbs each.
