KR> Build space for KR2S
How much space is needed to build the KR2S? I realize more is always better but I find I am faced with limited space in the garage for the time being. I mocked up a 4'x14' work table which makes things a little tight but factoring in space for back-bench and tools, it's going to get quite tight. Someone mentioned that a 4'x12' table would suffice but I figure I still need to have the additional 2' space for the longerons to hang over. Any KR2S experience and wisdom would be appreciated. In particular, what would be the minimum recommended space for, the fuselage build, and then for the fuselage/wing center-section build? Thanks Gary Wold EAA Lifetime member Eagle Scout
KR> Build space for KR2S
Gary, I build just about everything in a 10' x 20' shed. Built a 28" x 16' bench against the wall for the fuselage, spars and tail. Then built another 42" x 8' and a 24" x 6' bench to assemble the boat. Fortunately I had the room to set up a 10'x20' Costco garage/tent in the back yard on a wood platform. Moved the boat to the tent and started assembly. Built the wings in the shed. You get used to walking sideways and doubling your tools, because what you need is always on the other side. Started my project October 2013. I'm now wiring the panel, engine in on, down on the gear. Waiting on prop and Rotec carb. Send me your contact info and I'll send you some pics of my set up. KR> spar attachments
hello all, Just a quick question. I am redoing the waf's on the wings I have (got beautiful ones from Dan - thanks Dan) and I have a question about the fittings and bolts. I am going to go ahead and do it because it makes sense but I hadn't heard anyone mention it before. Of course I am priming and painting the waf's themselves. A couple of other builders were looking at what I was doing and both recommended that I use a marine varnish on the bolts before I put them through the spars. If not, they said that the AN bolts would delaminate and rot the wood spars from the inside. It's easy to do, so no problem, but just curious... Is this true or just an old wives tail? I think the Newsletters have a lot on that, and it's common practice to put epoxy (varnish would work, but you've already got epoxy) into the hole with a swab or similar, and let it soak in a few minutes before inserting bolts. I have disassembled a few spar attach fittings from salvaged airplanes, and they are difficult to remove, with no delamination in sight. If you dunked the spars in water several times a day that's possible, but the spars stay very dry inside that fiberglass box. For those who don't know, the Newsletters are at http://www.krnet.org/newsletter/, and are a wealth of information on KR construction and performance. They're also a great way to kill several hundred hours of building time, so skim them now for what interests you (there are a couple of indexes in there, and they are searchable PDFs), but I'd recommend saving the full-blown immersion for wintertime when it may be too cold to work on your KR... KR> Looking to buy KR-2 or KR-2s
Mitch, Don't know where you're located at but I have a project that is about 90% complete that I would be interested in selling. I have it at Lima, Ohio, Allen County Airport. Currently the wings are mounted on it and it is going to need a canopy frame made for it. I have the canopy already. It has an 1835c.c. VW conversion (Great Planes parts) with both a new magneto and a Great Planes electronic ignition system equipped with an Ed Sterba prop. The plane is painted except for where I scraped some paint runs off of the bottom of the fuselage that need touched up. This is an original KR2 plans built, not a KR2S. It has the Dan Diehl case on the back of the engine with an electric starter and is a fixed main gear tail wheel airplane (not a retract). Let me know if your interested. Forgot to put Dan Wessman on the list. He'll be sharing corvair engine stuff and maybe a little about the Panther. No plane this time. He's flying out to see his son stationed at Bremerton Wa. Use epoxy. I'd suggest that once the holes are drilled, lay the spar on it's side, tape the bottom holes shut, and pour the holes full of epoxy. Keep them full for 5 or 10 minutes to allow as much epoxy as possible to soak into the wood. At the point the epoxy starts to get tacky, remove the tape and attach at least one fitting with the bolts inserted completely through the holes. That should make the hole moisture proof and allow the epoxy to cure in contact with the bolt resulting in zero slop in the bolt hole. It wouldn't hurt to epoxy the fitting to wood contact surfaces also as they are installed. I'm guessing you might thin the epoxy a bit also if it seems too thick for good penetration but I wouldn't overdue the thinning part. Use a thin piece of safety wire or similar to help break the air bubble and let the thick epoxy fill the hole. As always... Larry Flesner

Larry Flesner wrote: > It wouldn't hurt to epoxy the fitting to wood contact surfaces also as they are installed.< I thought that also...what could it hurt? But several times I've wished I hadn't done that, so I could remove the WAF for some reason or another...mounting the wing tanks was one, and replacing them entirely was another (if the 3/8" main bolt holes wallow out, or the mount is damaged somehow). He says his are painted, so the joint would only be as good as the paint anyway. There is something to be said for epoxying the WAFs to the spar to keep them from squirming around. I think Marty Roberts had his wallow out the spar a bit and it rubbed a hole in the fuel tank (or something along those lines), so it's happened at least once. But given the number of bolts going through the spars, it would take a lot of working back and forth to make that happen. But I think we all agree that Marty's wing attach fittings were subjected to cruel and unusual punishment... Mark Langford ML at N56ML.com http://www.n56ml.com
KR> OSH KR Forum
Good news on the OSH Forum, it's back on again! I heard from Mark Forss at EAA, and it's now scheduled for 8:30-9:45 on Monday, July 20th, at Forum Stage 3, rather than Stage 10 as we have in the past. I wish we could slide it back to 11:30 or so, but I'm happy to have a slot at all. Any suggestions regarding the program will be entertained...I've been doing the same thing for years, and folks may be tiring of it. Something we've done before is get several pilots on the stage to field questions. Maybe we could do that, or several pilots with different engines in their planes. After the forum, we usually walk out to the KRs that have flown in and have a dog and pony show, for the new folks. I talked to Robert Pesak today, and although he's not flying yet, he hopes to fly to OSH, so that'll be a treat... Mark Langford ML at N56ML.com http://www.n56ml.com

I'm "guessing" that to remove a fitting that was epoxyed to the spar a heat gun could be used to get the fitting hot to the point of softening the epoxy and the fitting would probably fall to the floor. Never tried it so don't know. Larry Flesner
