KR> Back-up profile engine mount

2016-07-19 Thread Stef den Boer
hi,
To install the engine mount on the firewall I have to install according drawing
a L shaped .125 thickness. On the drawing I cant find the lengt of this L
profile. Do I install it over the full lengt of the upper shelf? I think it is
better to install 2 L shaped profiles so you connect the upper and the
lowershelf.but only the area where the attachment Bolts are from the engine
mount.
What did you do?
For your dimensions, we made the engine upper mount wider, so the attachment at
the firewall is only 3 inch from the longaronslike Mark L did.

Thanks Stef.

Just to say thanks for responses re rudder size. Would seen plan size to 10
percent larger seems to be consensus.

Has anyone tried these heads from CB Performance? They look like they have
better air flow around the exhaust ports and maybe better quality control?

I left out the angle entirely. I don't think you need it (and I've
proven it) if you attach the engine mount near the longerons...where the
load path is. Just a small pad of 1/8" aluminum epoxied to the wood on
the backside to prevent pull through should be fine. Save weight
wherever possible...

Looks like maybe they have swapped to the "Chinese castings", which are
improved over the CB 044 heads that came on N891JF. These are
essentially what I bought from DRD Racing. I've done a lot of photos of
these and several other choices over the last few weeks, having replaced
my heads a week or so ago. See http://www.n56ml.com/n891jf/vw/ for more
on this. It's a comparison of several different heads and their air
passages. I was happy with the quality of the DRD heads, which looked
very similar to the ones in your link. I've put two hours on them so
far, and the thing still runs hot, so I'm on a baffling witch hunt now.
I need some "conformal" fiberglass plenums on that thing like I have on
the Corvair.

I'm still looking for ideas on "what works" in various VW aircraft
installations, because what I have isn't working. I took off in 95
degree temp yesterday, and after idling to the runway and a quick runup,
it was at 400F as I turned crosswind, and I wasn't even at pattern
altitude yet! Baffling is pretty tight on this thing, but what I don't
know is what's going on in flight between the top of the cowling and the
fiberglass/silicone seal. That's my main mission for the next three
days until I take off for OSH. One more thing I'm going to do is wrap
those hot exhaust pipes (just inside the inlet) with insulating wrap.
No sense in preheating my inlet air...

2016-07-19 Thread Mac McConnell-Wood
Hi Mark,
I had high temps on my Revmaster -didn't know what all-so I fitted an
adjustable outlet flap to the lower cowling, I fitted a new spring to the
pressure relief valve (don't ask -a VW specialist advised me). Fitted a VW
oil cooler to the top side.

Had an ex RAF test pilot to do the checks and he complained that the engine
ran too cool ! I checked with Ken Moult and he said "What's he complaining
about"!
The test pilot had lost confidence in my engine -so I sacked him...
Highlight of my career -an ex Vulcan chiefy sacking an RAF Group Captain
(retired)
Your results may differ !

All the best to you and your family,
Mac

I spent some time looking through my engine log book for my first KR and the
CHTs were always in the 400 to 425 degree range on climb out and then around
375-400 in cruise. The last set of heads on that engine were CBP 044s. I
purchased then 1990, and had 150 hours on them when I crashed in 2009. When
I tore them down the exhaust valves had a lot of wear in the seating area
and all the valve spring retainer groves were really worn, along with the
valve guides. I had done many different things to get them to run cooler
including installing adjustable cowl flaps. I gained the most by smoothing
out the cowling exits and changing to full synthetic oil. I remember reading
some people reporting a higher CHT using synthetic, but I did get a
consistent 25 degree drop in CHT. Of course, the oil temp went up from 170
to 190 in cruise. Not enough to worry me.

I have rebuilt the old 044 heads with new valve guides and new 214NSS
stainless valves from CBP and recut the valve seats with a Neway cutter. I
currently have about 75 hours on them. I Flew on a 100F degree day over the
weekend and here are the temps I got.

Climb: 330F, taken under a cylinder head stud and 410F under a spark plug.
(I think I got hotter than that).
Cruise at 6500 ft. 3200 RPM, 145 MPHI: 300F under the stud, and 350F under
the spark plug.

The engine is a 2180 with the compression ratio set at 7.2:1

I always pull the prop through four blades to make sure the valves have not
developed a leak. I have 75 hours on the heads and the engine is still
running strong and smooth, but now after shut down and pulling the prop
through I have a slight hiss coming from one cylinder out the exhaust pipe.
If I let the engine cool for 10 minutes or more the leak goes away. Maybe a
sticky valve guide?

It will be interesting to see how your DPD heads hold up.

I did not use the angle either, just a crush plate on each side of
the firewall, and I've got an 0-200 hanging on a HAPI mount which is
not mounted close to the longerons.
