Congratulations John. My stock kr2 had to have the electric trim re-rigged to give me more nose down. I don't think the trim tab is ever above the elevator only below it. KR> Electric Trim
I tried to use a r/c servo with a test controller, and it worked fine until the transponder transmitted, then it went to full deflection. If you use a r/c landing gear servo, it does not use a pulse modulation to control it, it might work. I went with a Ray allen servo, which works just fine. Al Hawkins Port Coquitlam, B.C. KR> VW Question
Per Steve Bennett's manual. Only use 30W or 10w30 in a vw. The VW oil control springs rely on 30W oil to open the passage to the oil cooler when the oil is at the correct temp. By using 20w50 the viscosity is thicker which causes the oil control spring not letting oil thru the cooler until a higher temp is reached. KR> battery had bulged
I am using the compufire voltage regulator for Harleys designed for sealed lead acid batteries. -Original Message- From: krnet-bounces+awh.hawkins=telus@mylist.net [mailto:krnet-bounces+awh.hawkins=telus@mylist.net] On Behalf Of Mark Jones Sent: October 22, 2005 6:31 AM To: KRnet Subject: Re: KR> battery had bulged The battery is a Power Sonic http://www.portablepower.com/items/batteries/SLA/1/Powersonic/PS-12180/P S-12180NB/SL105/35L105S3 PS-12180NB. This is a UPS (uninteruptable power supply) type battery and is optimized by a charge rate of 5.4A till it reaches 14.4 to 14.7 volts. Once fully charged this type of battery must have a charger that either shuts itself down or goes into a float voltage mode. A float mode for this battery is a constant charge range of 13.8 to 13.8 volts continuously. When held at this voltage the battery will seek it's own current level and maintain itself in a fully charged condition. I am running the John Deere dynamo system and this system emits a continuous charge rate of 14.5 volts. This extra voltage can not be tolerated by this UPS battery and I speculate that it heated the battery up causing the bulging of the side. There is a possibility, under these circumstances that the battery case could rupture/explode while in flight which would create unwanted circumstances. I promoted this as a good Sealed Lead Acid Battery to use in our aircraft. I have now flight tested this battery and DO NOT recommend it any longer. Mark Langford, I suggest you remove yours and replace it as well as anyone else who may have one. I am using the Compufire Harley series regulator, it disconnects the charging voltage when the battery is full. Some batteries are designed to efficiently "store" energy that is received and delivered at modest (charge / discharge) rates - units designed for Solar and UPS applications generally fall in this category and are very effective provided they are not subjected to high charge / discharge rates. The acceptable charge rate (in this case) is more of a trickle charge, but certainly not much over C/10 and the acceptable discharge rate is adequate to deliver the full (stored) capacity over a period of time. Whereas we can control the charge rate and solve most of the battery damage type problems, cranking an engine is very demanding in terms of current draw, if the battery is not designed for this, its life will be short. Subjecting the battery to a higher (than spec) charge (or discharge?) rate is more likely to cause damage from overheating, than high temps in the general environment. Hi Guys I took off at 9:20 am for a 1 hour flight in the local mountains. It took quite a while to climb to 9000 feet, as I was crossing over a glacier I had a bit of a scare. The RPM started dropping from 3000 to 2900 in about 3 seconds. I pulled out the carb heat and after about 15 seconds the RPM came back up. More proof the a POSA carb can experience carb ice, it was probably in the intake manifold. Al Hawkins KR2 C-GDPU Port Coquitlam, B.C. Canada

KR> Air inlet
Hi Lee The carb requires a cold air source, you are using heated air in your cowl, this will cause the mixture to richen up. When you run the engine with the cowl off the carb is getting cool air. Before I sealed my cold air source to the carb the carb inlet temp was running 145 F. Yours will be even higher if no cold air is getting to the carb. Al Hawkins KR2 C-GDPU Port Coquitlam, B.C. Yes a little scarry, but yes I did remain calm. As I was driving to the cruise ship, an idea came to me re: the inlet of air into the carb. First I have a POSA carb (yes I know I know) I runs great on the ground, low and high speed. The high speed RPMs could be higher. I was thinking this was caused by static forces. Now back to the problem, I have a gap of about 1" 1 1/2" from the cowl to the inlet of the carb. Does anybody think that once I got up to speed 90-100, a pressure or/ low pressure situation could have occured in the lower cowl, causing the flow of air to the carb to have effected that mixture? The motor never quit, but started to run really rugh and an incredible amount of power loss. KR> I flew my plane for the 2nd time.
This evening after work, I took C-GDPU up for the 2nd time the 1st time was for 1 circuit as the engine was backfiring slightly. This time I circled the airport at 2000 feet for 1 hour to get used to it. My weight at takeoff was 900 lbs., to fly level took a little bit of down trim. The only problem I am having is getting used to the rudder sensitivity on rollout. I ground looped it causing slight damage to the trailing edge of the left wingtip. Robert Pyra told me that I touched down nicely and just overcorrected on rollout. Al Hawkins
KR> C-GDPU has finally become a airplane today.
I started building my KR2 in 1986, and it finally left the earth today. The airport is at sea level and there was no wind. The test pilot flew it for .9 hrs, circling the airport. The plane hit a top speed of 130 mph at 3200 rpm, climbed 1000'/min at 70 knots, and stalled at 45 knots. The plane flew hands off, but not enough nose up trim, will need to adjust the MAC servo push rod. The engine is a 1835 VW with a super posa carb, the empty weight is 610 lbs. There were a few problems the engine apparently was cutting out at times, I think the posa is the cause. The static RPM is a little low considering it is a 52x44 prop, possibly mixture to rich. The transponder died after 15 minutes, possibly the fuse. Alastair Hawkins Port Coquitlam B.C.
