KR> Taxi test

2011-10-23 Thread Bernard McLean Sr
Netters;

Good news and sad news!

After installing a primer on my KR2's Corvair engine to cure hard starting
problems, I test ran the motor this morning (before bad weather sets in here
in the Northern part of Illinois).

Even though the Corvair's weight has caused some static nose heaviness, I
felt that with me in the pilot's seat (150 lbs), some ground handling
stability would result..WRONG!!!

The good news.the primer worked perfectly.engine started on the third blade.
The BAD news, I tried to taxi test the plane (no wings on yet and just a
crude temporary panel and fuel tank). Everything was ok for about 50 feet,
then after a 180 turn (brakes worked fine too!), the tail started coming up
even though the stick was full back.couldn't react quickly enough to kill
the engine and she went right up on her nose.good bye Sterba 54/54 prop!
Some slight damage to the air cleaner which absorbed the weight not taken by
the prop.

Question.this is a standard Corvair rebuild with nitride crank, new
cylinders, pistons, rod, bearings and heads reworked by Mark Petniunas. Do
you think that a tear down is necessary? The engine was at idle and the prop
shattered and, I assume, absorbed most of the sudden stoppage.

Your comments are appreciated.

I too had a big day today in the life of my KR projectfirst engine run.
I had trouble getting the engine to cough and checked spark, fuel etc. I
found that the point gaps were slightly different...adjusted this but still
no luck. Then I tried a few squirts of STARTING FLUID on the air cleaner
(AeroCarb). It fired right up and ran sweetly. This may work for you too!

What make/model of condensers are the best for the Corvair with dual points?
AND, how are these condensers mounted.can they be remotely mounted away from
the distributor and connected to the points via a length of no. 16 wire or
will this add too much resistance? I'm also looking for a source to purchase
the DPDT switches used for selecting each ignition system.

Thanks for any help you can provide!

Jim;
Sounds like your main wheels are severely toed out.
Try looking at Mark Langford's web site on this topic. He has some very
astute comments and procedures there.
I installed the Diehl gear while the boat was still upside down on the
table and took extreme care to make sure that the gear leg ends were
equidistant from the floor (gear brackets attached!) and that the axle
bracket mounts were as parallel as possible.
Even with all this, I had to add .015" shims at the rear of the axle
brackets. This has resulted in a 2" toe-in over a distance of 12 feet.
I'm hoping I can live with this but am prepared to adjust the shims if I
get any handling anomalies or weird tire wear. I'm told that a slight
toe in is acceptable.
Hope this helps.

Does anyone know if there are low profile tire that'll fit the 5 x5.00

KR> Time to decide

2008-10-12 Thread Bernard McLean Sr
Well, I have taken the boat about as far as I can before I set the
center spars.
My problem is this;
I have cut 2 inner wing ribs from 3/32 plywood using the original plans
I bought in 1986 (the plans supplement I bought late last year did not
include a full size inboard rib template, only the outer ribs, so I used
the only full size template I had).
When positioned on the fuselage sides over the spar holes, the chord
lines on the ribs show exactly 3.5 degrees positive incidence (as called
for by the construction manual). Now I am torn between following the
manual or using something less than 3.5 degrees to yield a more
"normal" in-flight nose up/down attitude. Then I ask myself, "If I use
less than 3.5 degrees at the fuselage, what happens to the normal wing
tip washout of +.5 degrees...does it become negative? stay the same or
what?"
I don't want to make a decision to use less than 3.5*, epoxy the spars
into position, and discover that it won't work.
I thought about waiting until I could speak to builders at Mount Vernon
but am ready now to set the spars.
Any opinions and other ideas would be appreciated. Also, does anyone
know of an EAA tech counselor in Northern Illinois?
I couldn't find one on the EAA registry.

KR> Time to decide

2008-10-12 Thread Bernard McLean Sr
All of my spars have been finished and closed since 1986 when I had to
put this project on hold due to lack of space and time.
I wasn't aware that a pre-closing inspection was required for the spars.
I just followed the builder's manual and varnished each cavity (not the
glued surfaces!) and closed them up. They have been plastic wrapped for
the past 18 years and still look fine and fit the fuselage cut-outs
perfectly (and yield a perfect 3.5* incidence).
It looks like I can't go too far wrong if I follow the manual and use
3.5* washing out to .5* at the tips.
Thanks for the input.
See you all at Mount Vernon.

KR> Wing incidence with RAF-48?

2008-10-12 Thread Bernard McLean Sr
Discussion of this topic raises a couple of interesting issues for me;
I started building my KR 2 in 1986 and completed the wing spars
(all...main, front and rear plus outer, front and rear).
I also completed the fuselage sides and horizontal stabilizer and
elevators before going into a 17 year hiatus!
I attended the 2003 Red Oak Gathering and was re-energized to get busy
and (after retirement) have done so. I bought the KR 2S plans supplement
and have resumed building using the parts I completed earlier. I am
close to completion of the "boat" (belly is skinned, spar holes are cut,
top cross members installed etc.).
I have incorporated what I was able to from the -2S plans (firewall
dimensions, top engine rails, main spar gussets etc. and am close to
permanent installation of the center spars.
Since built the spars to the original -2 dimensions, I assume I should
not use any of the -2S wing dimensions and have decided to use the -2
plans and instructions.
Now I'm wondering if I should use 3.5 degrees incidence as per the -2
plans or something less as suggested by Mark. What would be the effect
on pitch stability (if any) of using less than 3.5 degrees? I don't like
the idea of a nose-down attitude in flight if it can be avoided but am
hesitant to divert from the plans in this area.
I have also decided to discard the retractable gear components I
purchased with the original plans (unless someone is interested in
buying them...make me an offer) in favor of the fixed gear tail dragger
version.
I'm about 20% done with about 90% remaining ;-) .
I would appreciate any builder comments from the list. Incidentally, we
plan to attend the gathering at Mount Vernon in September and will pick
brains then too!.
Thanks.

KR>Question for the group

2008-10-12 Thread Bernard McLean Sr
I am dry fitting the belly cross members prior to gluing and have hit a
road block (with which I am hoping you all can help me);

* My original KR2 plans (dated 10/08/86) show a belly cross member
  at station "D" only .
* Drawing "A" (of my new KR2S supplement..Sept/92...just received)
shows a belly cross member at station "E" only.
* I looked at Mark Langford's web site and it looks like he
installed 1 cross member is located at station "E" only.

I was wondering what the downside would be to installing a belly cross
member at BOTH "D" and "E".
Mark's fuselage looks so good I should probably stick with station "E"
only...any ideas or comments?

Thanks for your help...I'm really getting energized after a 15 year

KR>Starting boat layout

2008-10-12 Thread Bernard McLean Sr
I hope my questions aren't too basic for the group but
After an approximate 15 year lay off, I'm resuming construction on my KR2.
I'm laying out the completed fuselage sides on the work table for "boat"
assembly and am concerned that if I follow the dimensions called for by
the plans for the belly cross members (especially at station C) , I'm
going to have a huge pile of tooth picks on my hands!
Does it make sense to dampen the fuselage sides to make them more
pliable (they're 15 years old and have been carefully wrapped and kept
in a fairly humid basement for the past 15 years), or should I just bite
the bullet and follow the plans to the letter and hope for no
explosions? I'm going to use T-88 epoxy for the balance of the project.
I'd appreciate any input the list can provide.
Happy Holidays from Poplar Grove IL

KR>I'm resuming construction on my KR2

2008-10-12 Thread Bernard McLean Sr
Hello to all KR enthusiasts.
I'm wondering if you can help me make a couple of decisions.
I am about to resume construction on my KR2 kit (plans book no. 68)
which I started in February of 1986 and had to put on hold for a variety
of reasons (lack of assembly space, primarily). I managed to complete
all the wing spars and fuselage sides plus the horizontal stab and, 17
years later, am ready to begin assembly of the "boat".
My questions are;
1.Should I use T-88 glue or is one of the more expensive products
listed by Wicks or A.S.&S. a better way to go?
2.My kit is the retractable gear version. At the KR gathering this
year I talked with many folks who suggested going with the
fixed gear instead (which I have decided to do). Now, what do I need to
do before boat assembly to prepare for the fixedtail dragger
version?
3.Does someone sell the fixed gear components together with plan
modifications?

Thanks for any ideas you can provide!
