KR> Blying book review
If you're interested in aviation, if you enjoy reading about piloting exploits, if you wish you could fly everywhere in the world; here's your chance! Buy and read "FERRY PILOT" by Kerry McCauley. The book covers Kerry's adventures as a ferry pilot in the 1990s. During those years, Kerry flew numerous solo crossings of the Atlantic into Europe, Asia and Africa. On many those trips he experienced a variety of hair-raising incidents and several funny ones as well. McCauley is a professional skydiver with over 20,000 jumps and a commercial pilot with over 9,000 hours. He starred in the TV series "Dangerous Flights. Kerry owns and operates "Skydive Twin Cities" in Baldwin, Wisconsin. FERRY PILOT is available from Amazon as either a Kindle ebook or as a paperback. Re: KR> Nason oil pressure switch
Larry, What I want to be "automatic" is to have my electric fuel pump shut off if I'm disabled due to a crash. If the fuel system is compromised the chances of being roasted to death increase greatly. If I'm flying and the engine stops, I'll switch to the backup fuel pump and distributor points, both are wired to a single double pole switch (run off the backup battery). Then I'll go through my emergency check list. I know that the more pieces you add, the greater the chance for a failure but having the fuel pump shut off when there is no oil pressure means bad things have happened or bad things are going to happen. -Original Message- From: KRnet [mailto:krnet-boun...@list.krnet.org] On Behalf Of Flesner via KRnet Sent: Tuesday, July 16, 2019 4:49 PM To: krnet@list.krnet.org Cc: Flesner Subject: Re: KR> Nason oil pressure switch > I'm installing a Facet electric fuel pump and want to use a Nason pressure > switch to shut the fuel off if oil pressure drops to near zero. > Dave McCauley + >I was going to respond in much the same manner as Mark. Re: KR> Nason oil pressure switch - more info
Mark, Thanks for the valuable info. My setup uses two facet rumps in series. One pump is a boost pump that I'll use on startup and then when the oil pressure come up, I'll switch to the pump with the cutoff switch. If for any reason - low oil pressure or pump failure, I can switch to the boost pump for backup. I'll also have a backup battery. -Original Message- From: KRnet [mailto:krnet-boun...@list.krnet.org] On Behalf Of Mark Langford via KRnet Sent: Tuesday, July 16, 2019 12:37 PM To: KRnet Cc: m...@n56ml.com Subject: Re: KR> Nason oil pressure switch Dave McCauley wrote: > I'm installing a Facet electric fuel pump and want to use a Nason pressure > switch to shut the fuel off if oil pressure drops to near zero. I Need to > know the part number of the Nason switch. You didn't ask for my opinion, but I caution you not do this. I say that because I've flown something like 20 miles with zero oil pressure on the meter. I made it back to the airport, but admittedly the prop would barely turn after I pulled onto the apron at the hangar. Replacing the crank and main bearings made it good as new. If I'd had that switch in place, I'd have gone down in what passes for mountains around here, completely wooded, and there probably would have still been a fire. Yes, you can put a bypass around the Nason switch as mitigation, but will you remember that it's there in the "heat of the moment"? I probably wouldn't. I've had several deadstick landings, and not once did I remember to shut the fuel off at the tank. Yep, probably should have read the checklist, but I didn't think to read that eitherI was too consumed with getting my butt back on the ground in one piece! Really, if your oil pressure goes to zero, you should have a big red flashing light in front of you to tell you (or say below 15 psi), and at that point, can't you just switch off the pump in the regular way? If you're going to shut off the fuel, you're clearly done flying, so why not? If I were going to do something like this fuel pump shutoff, I'd use the fuel shutoff relay that was used on Rabbits/Golfs in the 70's and 80's, and is likely still used in Golfs and other VWs today. I own several VWs and Audis now, and I've never heard of one failing while driving. Designed to minimize the fire during a car crash, it kills the fuel pump when the tach signal is lost, taking the 70 psi fuel spray out of the equation. I actually toyed with doing this, and got a relay, but never completely warmed up to the idea. There's more on this, including a part number, at http://www.n56ml.com/fuel/index.html , including a schematic, near the bottom. If done as VW does it, operating the starter provides power back to the fuel pump, as long as the key is in the "start" position. So far I've lived without it, as I have a completely redundant fuel pump / ignition power circuit in both KRs. This is detailed on both the electrical system page and the fuel system page, at http://www.n56ml.com/electrical/index.html. I'm still not recommending this "fuel pump relay" either, as it's just another potential failure point that I can live without. Re: KR> Stub wing leading edge stall strip
>Has anyone added a stall strip to the leading edge of the stub wing like on the Grumman Yankee? Stall strips are usually added to ensure that the inboard portion of the wing stall first - before the outboard portion. With the ailerons on the outboard portion of the wing are stalled, there is no longitudinal control and no way to prevent rolling. The KR2 and other modern designs have washout build into the wings which obviates the need for stall strips. Dave McCauley ___ Search the KRnet Archives at http://tugantek.com/archmailv2-kr/search. KR> aileron controls
Just to clarify, when the aileron moves downward, lift is increased and the wing is deflected upwards. The increased lift of the wing, increases drag on that wing which produces adverse yaw. So to counter this, aileron controls can be designed to increase the deflection on the downward moving wing aileron more than the upward moving wing - the up-moving aileron goes up 30? while to down moving aileron travels down 20?. KR> Post curing wings
It can be done with a few simple tools and some ingenuity. You'll need some 4x8 construction foam panels (the 1" pink stuff works well), a couple of heat guns and an oven thermometer. Build a box of the foam panels big enough to hold a wing section, suspend the wing section from the top and place a heat gun at each of the box (pointing well away from the wing section). I suspended each heat gun on a wire at the ends of the box with the nozzle pointing toward the middle of the box. I put the thermometer pickup in the middle, just below the bottom surface of the wing. With the foam box closed up, it took about 10 minutes for the temperature to register 150 degrees. I wanted to cure the wing at that temperature for at least an hour. If the temperature got over 150, I opened the end of the box to let in a little cool air. I seemed to work well. You can go on the KRSuper2 web site and look in section 5 of the manual to see some pictures of how Scott Watts did his wing. Dave McCauley
KR> What are you buiding???
What are you building? I'm building a KRSUPER2. This is an all composite redesign based on the KR2S. It's a Corvair powered, two place, tricycle gear, slightly larger plane. What did you accomplish with it during 2012? The major construction of the fuselage is done along with the tail feathers. This year I built the wing structure and skinned the bottom. As I live in Minnesota and don't have a heated garage, finishing on the wing will wait for Spring. Over the winter I'll build the canopy and turtle deck in my basement (They're small enough to go upstairs and outside. What do you hope to accomplish with it during 2013? I was hoping to finish building by fall but there are just too many tasks and not enough time so I'm hoping for spring 2014. Meanwhile, I'll construct the landing gear, ailerons, flaps, flight controls and motor mount. Dave McCauley

Used in an AC application, I'd guess it would have to be sandwiched between layers of fiberglass just like last-a-foam. I don't know how expensive it is and wonder how much it weighs compared to last-a-foam which is 4 lbs per cubic foot (a 4x8 sheet of last-a-foam weighs 4 lbs). Dave McCauley

To protect aluminum, try Alodine, a surface treatment that provides a layer of corrosion resistance. You just paint it on. Paint will bond to it. If you're willing to do a little chemistry and have a 12 volt battery charger, try anodizing your aluminum parts. The advantage of this process is it's cheap - only thing you buy is battery acid and some aluminum wire. You can also dye your finished parts any color you like. KR> KR2 spars
Greg, I'm building a KR Super2 which is an all composite derivative of the KR2S. The main spar has a core of 1/2 inch last-a-foam sandwiched with multiple layers of fiberglass and has spar caps of carbon-fiber rod. The construction is complicated and goes very slowly. It is strong but only 1 inch thick so replacing the wood KR2S box structure wouldn't be easy and mounting the landing gear would also require much work. So, I believe you'd be much better off building the spar per KR2 plans. Maintaining the same design idea, outboard spars connecting to main spar with the WAF's, but using the modern composite materials. ___ Search the KRnet Archives at http://www.maddyhome.com/krsrch/index.jsp to UNsubscribe from KRnet, send a message to krnet-le...@mylist.net please see other KRnet info at http://www.krnet.org/info.html
KR> Jet Hot Coating / cabin heat

KR> Deck Cloth over Caarbon Fiber
Ok guys, My Rudder and Elevators are fabed from 2lb polyurethane foam and covered with Carbon fiber. I've seen reference to the possibility of puncture damage to CF because it's so ridged. I'm wondering if there is any advantage to using deck cloth as a protective layer? I know it will add some weight but wonder if it's worth it. Your thoughts and experience. Dave McCauley KR Super2
KR> primer coat on composite
I'm building a KRSuper2 and have the fuselage upside down for what is likely the last time. Before I flip it back over, I'd like to prime and sand the bottom. I've read about Smooth Prime but it seems a little expensive for my budget. Anybody have any suggestions on a composite primer that goes on thick enough to help smooth the glass surface? I can hardly wait to start sanding. Dave McCauley

There are several builders working on this all composite derivative (including me). It's probably more work than a 2S but wider & longer with a little more useful load. KR> KRSuper2 Builder
Nice to see some interest in this machine. There are a hardy few of us following in Scott Watts footsteps and having fun figuring out how to build a brand new design. Remember, the reason were home builders is because we like the challenge of actually creating an airplane ourselves. Im having a blast and learning new techniques almost every day. I havent taken the time add up my spending so far but its been pretty modest. Foam, epoxy and fiberglass are pretty easy to work with, about on par with wood so it will take me about as long to build as a KR2S. I live in Minnesota (50º out right now) so I work in my garage during the warm months and do small stuff in my basement over the winter (Ive just finished moving downstairs). The main fuselage and horizontal stabilizer are done. I hope to have the wing ribs finished by spring and will build the main spar once I can get back in the garage. Look at Scotts web site to see more about the plane. Dave McCauley
KR> Oshkosh KR Forum video
I'll bring my video camera and a tripod and we'll see what happens. If everything goes ok, I'll put it on a DVD and let you know how to get a copy. Dave McCauley
KR> Oshkosh on Sunday
I'm not camping at AirVenture but will be arriving in the area on Sunday. Does anyone know if I can get access to the grounds? If I can, I'd like to lookup other early arrivals and chat. I'm building a KRSuper2 but am interested in all KRs. Dave McCauley
