Hi all KRnetter,

Sorry for the private message sent worldwide, instead of to Dene only. I
made the standard error of replying to somebody's message, without changing
the ADDRESS from KRnet to his.

Anyway, shortly after this error, 2 guys unknown to me, staying not far from
me (well, relatively close - 65 and 300kms) phoned me and we had very
interesting discussions.
So - thanks to the Net, and sorry guys.

Hi guys
Regarding the removeable turtledecks, I am in the process of changing from a
standard KR bubble canopy to a dragonfly canopy and will probably have to
make a new forward deck. My rear deck has not yet been attached to the
fuselage. I like the idea of having the decks removeable but am concerned
with water ingress when the plane stands outside in the rain. Can those with
removeable decks comment on this and how it was overcome please.

When all you get are blank stares when you ask about a bolt, you go to
the KR list, and here I am!!!

In a nutshell, the rings would be 2.25 or 3.125 ID, and about 1/8" wide,
and maybe a max. of 1/16" thick. Just precision cut rings out of some
cheap, black plastic would be excellent!

Someone, somewhere knows of someone, somewhere, that can make nice cuts
in plastic that will give the panel the final touches. Just simple
rings that can be glued to the CF and cover the rough edges in it is all
that I'm trying to do.

Can anybody help me?

Thanks!

Also, if anybody needs to see the pictures of where we are right now,
please advise and I'll send them to you.

Well not quite.but it was a fantastic feeling none the less.

For the first time ever, I had both wings bolted on the KR. The canopy was
fitted and moving up and down smoothly on the new gas struts. A nose bowl
from a KR2 was held in place with a single self tapper.
My kids and I then pushed (taxied) the KR onto the road outside the house,
they jumped in and I played the role of the motor. Any time a car came
along we had to quickly nose into someone's driveway leaving the tail
hanging out. Passers by stopped and commented on how small it looked for a
two seater. I was thinking quite the opposite, with both wings bolted on,
my KR almost fully spanned the road.
My neighbor missed the parade so I just might have to perform some
additional taxi tests next weekend.

Enjoy the photos www.kr-2s.com

I love this building caper.

KR> EA81 Motor mount

2009-11-20 Thread JC Marais
Good morning Randy & Eric,

Let me get in this band wagon.

I'm also at the stage where the final decision on power plant must be made.
I've got an EA81T, as it was cut from some donor car. That means that I
still have a lot to do before the engine can be mounted.

I would love to buy your motor mount, but the shipping cost to me (South
Africa) will be more than the cost.

Few questions:
1. What redrive do you have on the engine?
2. Have you used the EA81 in your plane? If yes, why was it taken out?
3. Do you have a diagram with (at least fairly) accurate measurements for
the mount? I need to start designing a mount and any help will be much
appreciated. If not, a few photos will be more than wellcome.

Eric, where / in which country do you stay?

KR> Careful what you carry with you

2009-10-31 Thread JC Marais
Dear Mr. Freeman,

We all know that there are strict rules about carrying dangerous items on
planes. You are NOT allowed to take any knives, firing arms or explosives on
an aircraft, since you could use it to hijack the plane, or even blow it up.

... I'm not sure what happens if the aircraft owner, passengers, crew and
pilots on board are all the same (single) person. Possibly you could
threaten yourself to do something dangerous?

I'm glad to see your mails coming through again on a more regular basis.

Any plans yet for your next plane?

NetHeads,

Just about every day, the list automatically unsubscribes one or two people
because of "excessive bounces".  A "bounce" is a returned mail that was
undeliverable...no server to send it to.  This is usually due to your ISP
(internet service provider) having connection problems, their mail server is
down, or some other reason why the rest of the world can't get email to your
box.  Sometimes it's because you've closed your account without
unsubscribing, and that's why the mechanism is there, to stop sending email
to dead email boxes.  Why bother, you ask?  Because in an effort to prevent
spamming, big email providers like AOL will blacklist an entire domain (like
mylist.net), if they get a lot of bounces from difference account names on
the same domain...because it might be a shotgun blast of "hail Mary" email
sent to a...@aol.com   through z...@aol.com in the hopes of duping a few
folks into their scam, or whatever.

The point of all this is that the system will automatically unsubscribe you,
and it usually happens at 5PM CST, which is something like 11PM GMT.   Quite
often the next thing that happens is that I get an email - why did "I"
unsubscribe somebody...what did they do that made me mad enough to throw
them off the list?  I hope I'm not really perceived by most as being that
way.  Usually you just have to subscribe again, and hope that your ISP gets
its act together a little better and quits bouncing your email.  I've
noticed that some rural areas in the US, and places like OZ and SA where
internet connections or ISP diligence may be a llittle lacking, and I
completely understand that.  Just send an email to krnet-j...@mylist.net and
you'll be right back on again. Notice though that things have changed a
little when rejoining...The list does require a "real" name, address, phone
number, and a sentence or two as to why you want to join the list before
I'll let you back on, mainly to prevent spammers from subscribing, and also
so I have some idea of who some of you are who refuse to put sign your
emails with some clue of who or where you are.  But don't take it
personally.

It was a perfect flying day in the Southeast today, so I flew over
Tennessee, almost to South Carolina, just taking in the scenery.  I also
took a few pictures, one of which is at the top of

KR> Instrument panel thickness

2009-07-09 Thread JC Marais
Hi all,

I'm starting to build the instrument panel.

Of course, there are always questions that pops up, where the answer is
dependant on a lot of variables. I plan to build the panel from 3mm (might
be 2.8, I'm not sure) plywood, and I need to know what thickness is required
to ensure the panel will be stiff enough.

I understand that it is firstly important to know WHAT will be installed.
Well, I'm very much in the steam-age regarding my instruments, so they are
heavier than the nice electronic gadgets one can buy.

Should I stick 2 plies together, or will one be enough?

KR> Turtle deck modification

2008-10-12 Thread JC Marais (KR2)
Hi All,

First of all, thanks to all the contributors on this list. There is always
something new to learn.

Which leads to my point:
I have changed the canopy on my plane. The result is that it stands about
15cm (6") higher than the existing turtle deck. Now I need to lift the
turtle deck.

The problem is that the old deck is actually quite well built, and I do not
really want to replace the whole thing. My idea is just to replace the
forward part, of about 90cm to 130cm measured from the canopy.

The resulting questions are:
1.How do you blend the raised part to the original part that stays
intact with the tail?
2.Is it safe to leave a break in the t-deck, or should it be one
continuous construction from canopy to tail?
3.If it is OK to replace a part, what should the form be. Straight from
the canopy to the intersection, a "S" curve (like a Coke bottle), concave,
convex, or whatever?
4.Any general tips would be welcome.

KR>FW: High CHT

2008-10-12 Thread JC Marais
Hi Serge,

Just a few "off-the-dome" points to think about:

- How many hours do you have on your new engine?
- Is it run in yet? (Remember, running-in is usually done with a lower
grade of oil to enhance bedding in of the components. That WILL generate
more heat)
- Are you SURE that the baffles are still sealing properly around the
engine. A leak could maybe result in warm air not leaving the FWF are. You
stated that the new fins are of a different design (and supposedly more
efficient). Is the cooling air still forced THROUGH the fins.
- I am not a pro on this topic, but if you increased your hp by, say 20
percent, then the engine should produce 20 percent more heat. IF your
previous installation was marginally adequate, leaving a safety factor of
say 5 percent, then the mentioned 20 percent will be 20 - 5 = 15 percent too
small. But 15 percent = 3 x 5 (safety margin), thus giving a safety margin
deficiency of 3 times what you had. That means that the heat produced by
three quaters of your additional hp, is not leaving the engine. (Still,
could that result in the very rapid increase of temps?)
- Are you sure the oil cooler is OK?

Now I have confused myself.

I would LOVE to come and see your installation. I promise to keep silent.

Cheers.
