I'm not on Facebook and haven't seen the posting but I think Josh had a 2S
with an 0-200. That should be a nice KR.

KR> KR2 ARTICLE-KITPLANES NOV 2010

2010-09-30 Thread Jim Sellars
I had an engine failure in mine and landed in a field. The wings were
broken off passing through a bunch of saplings and the attach fitting never
even bent. KR-2 is a tough little bird.

I am really miffed about this article. I would like to know what this guy's
qualifications are to make this assumption. I know of no failures of the
wing attach fittings on any KR. To my knowledge there have been no changes
in the wing attach fittings other than dimensionally with the 2S. I'll
confirm that with Jeanette today.

In the photos from "Ol Blue's crash the wing took a direct hit and the
fitting bent (accordion shaped) but were still intact. I had asked
Kitplanes to allow us to review it before print. I had a feeling it was
going to be bad when I was informed they had been working on the article for
a few years. It was alleged to be a flight report only from someone who did
not own a KR but she didn't seem to get it.

Guess I need to write a letter to the Editor...

There is an article written by Bob Grimstead about KR2s and specifically
about
one he flew that is owned and built by Allen Buzza. The article is a little
bland, as far as building excitement for the KR series in my opinion. This
airplane has the original retract landing gear. It looks pretty good in the
photos that accompany the article.
He did mention that there was some sort of problem with wing attach fittings
and
bolts. His exact words are as follows:  "The KR2's outer wing panels detach,

leaving a short center section (out to just past the main gear legs)
integral
with the fuselage. The wing bolts and attach plates can be problem areas,
and
the originally specified bolts were not truly big enough, so it pays to be
careful here".
I had no idea that the bolts specified for the wing attachments were
insufficient, maybe that was before my plans which I purchased around 1979
or 80
or maybe this fellow is misinformed. Fair and balanced, you decide!

I posted a for sale notice in early March, some of which is still available.

Canopy frame
Wing attach fittings
Forward deck
Turtle deck

Those
parts are pristine.

There are other
available parts which are less pristine, but maybe somebody can use them.
They include a fuselage which is well past the boat
stage. Tail feathers are installed. The
main spar is installed, and shaped to accept the newer airfoil. The stick,
pedals, horns and cables are also installed.

Pretty
much all other airframe parts are on hand to complete this aircraft,
including
retractable gear, fuel tank halves, the canopy and frame. The canopy frame
needs to be repaired. The smoked canopy has a small edge crack, but
that's fixable too.

Wing spars are fabbed and sealed with epoxy resin.

Of course none of this is brand spanking new, and little of it fits the KR2S
which most are building, so the value
is not what it once was. I'm not even sure that the tank is the currently
available version.

Make me an offer. Interested
persons contact me direct. If nobody calls in on this stuff, it's going to
the dump.

BTW, there's a HAPI engine available too. It's a low time engine, but due
to the number
of years it's been sitting around, I don't want to fly it. I was thinking
of using it in a
hovercraft. But hey, if someone wants it...

Larry and other builders,

NEVER, EVER, NEVER use numbers from another KR to determine the W&B
of your KR. Too many variables between airplanes like length of spinner,
if that is used for datum point, length of engine mount, was wing
location changed as in 2 inches added forward of the wing in the 2S,
angle of seat back, etc, etc., etc. Remember, these are not Cessnas
or Pipers build in jigs but each is a "one off" airplane. Each one
must be treated as a one of a kind and measured and weighted as
such. Nothing done to that point matters if the flying CG location
is not correct.

KR> C.G. location / flying qualities

2010-04-05 Thread Jim Sellars
My view, this is the rational for a larger rather than smaller engine. The
0-200 or a Subaru 2 lt. or something more powerful and larger. Like the
Corvair maybe. This pre loads the aircraft with a forward bias until you
add the 200 lb pilot. Then you should be in great shape relative to the C
of G.

NO only with the KR's, as most will tell you, with a header tank as
standard, the C of G moves to far aft when all the plans COG is used and it

Subject: KR> Projects for sale

I have two KR2S projects in my hangar in Stockton, CA. Both have been
around for awhile, and I am
not the original owner of either project.

Project one is past "boat" stage, i.e. the empennage is
assembled, the wing spars are fabbed, the stick and cabling is installed,
and
the pedals are in. The main spar has
been set to accept the modified airfoil. Pretty much all parts are on hand
to complete this aircraft, including
the fiberglass turtledeck, cowl and canopy, prop, main landing gear, and so
forth. The canopy frame was flexed once too often, and needs to be
repaired. The smoked canopy has a small
edge crack, but nothing major. I have
some foam, fiberglass, epoxy, and various chemicals which you are welcome
to.

Project two was flying (N20TH). It was landed hard, collapsing the right
main, right through the
wing stub. As such it is a complete
airplane with all instruments, valves, plumbing and electrical, including
the
fuel tank, and lights. Expecting the
main spar could be damaged, I chose to cannibalize it. Its stick and
associated hardware is now in
the other project. I have the VW engine
mount and everything else that goes with it. This is a good "prototype"
from which you can finish the other
project.

There are two engines to go with these projects. One is an injected
Revmaster 2100 D, with a
revflo throttle body. The PO is an
A&P, who basically remanufactured the engine for me last year before I
picked it up, and thus certifies that this is essentially a zero time long
block. While I was looking for all the
pieces and parts today, I observed that the valve covers were off, and I
haven't located them yet. Looks like
the magneto is missing as well, but everything else seems to be there.

The second engine is a low time (less than 4 hours) HAPI
engine. I had this engine mounted on a
Teenie Two and running, but the POSA was shot, so I bought a new RevFLO for
it. Unfortunately it's in the hangar
someplace and I can't find it, either. This engine is now mounted to a test
bench which is yours too. If you
hook up a throttle body, and give it some gas, it will run. The mount does
not fit a KR, I picked it up
in a salvage yard just so I had something to mount the engine up to.

I figure the HAPI, being old, might not be too desirable.
But the remanned revmaster long block's gotta be worth something. And the
airframes are certainly
useable. Not too sure of the glass and
foam work for the fuselages and fiberglass parts should be useful too.

Price tag? A new
turnkey Revmaster goes for close to 7k.My total price is 5k for two engines,
and enough parts to make one good
aircraft, and spares to sell individually if you choose.I can deliver for
free,
within 300 miles or so.

If you are going to go through all that... better a Glassair III RG or FG
with Wankel (Mazda) or Lancair Legacy with IO550... proven performers by any
definition. You can pick up projects that are 40 - 70% complete of the
Glassair or Lancair for what Solly says you'll spend on a KR now. I bought
an "abandoned" KR2 project and my "ready to fly" (minimal VFR) budget is
about 10 - 13K (have spent less than 2K so far with 25% completed airframe,

I have a KR-2 for sale, it was a flying plane in the test phase, then had
a hard landing and now needs a few minor repairs along with finishing the
engine. it has a tri gear and the engine is a VW 1800 greatplanes conversion
done at the factory. and is brand new because the old engine had a prop
strike and as shot, so a new engine.

I also have an extra upper and lower KR-2 cowling

I don't have pictures posted yet but if there is intrest I will try to
post some somewhere. Or I can try to email pictures ?

the plane is located in California near Sacramento and I'm going to ask
$6,500.00 but I'm open to offers ?.

If anyone is intrested contact me off the net at
"bobbycrea...@yahoo.com " and I might be able
to email pictures.

I picked up the plane thinking I could finnish it and fly it, and I really
don't think it will take much to get it flying but I just don't have the
time to work on it or the place to keep it. so I think before it gets
wrecked sitting out I should move it along.

  thanks
  Bobby

KR> Suburu engines - something to consider

2009-07-09 Thread Jim Sellars
I have built up a small but complete flight testing regime on two different
KR-2's and have never had anything remotely like a torque induced tendency
to roll. Both of my planes have extra engine. One is a Subaru, and it is
as tame and gentle as a little girl, the other has a Saturn engine and it is
wild with a mountain of extra power and speed but no tendency to roll on
take off or any other time. Seems to me that it should have been noticed by
now. What do people think of the high torque from an O-200, then?

Subject: KR> Suburu engines - something to consider

Probably the biggest reason to avoid higher-powered engines in KR's is
the problem with immediate and fatal torque rolls once the wheels leave
the runway. Using a PSRU with a Suburu and its extra torque this
tendency would even be worse.

When KR's just had VW's, torque rolls after takeoff were not a serious
problem, but once the horsepower started to go up, the fatal torque rolls
started. Among those first fatalities was Homer Didit of Mena, Arkansas
who put that R-985 in his KR-2. He only made the one flight and augered
in on takeoff.

And what about that fellow with the turbine KR? I haven't seen or heard
about it for quite some time now. Torque roll on takeoff?

I never see this phennomenon discussed on these forums. Is it something
we just don't like to talk about? The 300 lb. gorilla sitting in the
corner? I think it's time people gave this deadly KR quirk some
attention so that new pilots won't be caught unawares when they push that
throttle forward.

I'm sure the Corvair people will correct me if I'm wrong, but seems like
there have been a flock of KR's with Corvair six cylinder engines that
torque-rolled in - pulling it off too soon with full throttle.
Torque-roll. Boom. Smoke. There's just too much temptation to firewall
the throttle and try and show off with a vertical climb when you have all
that power available. Remember, these planes are made of styrofoam.
Hanging a huge engine on the front is just asking for trouble.

What got me started on this train of throught was that I've always
wondered why one of my tires wears out before the other one. Landing on
one tire more than the other would explain it, except at my home field
the normal crosswind would favor wearing out the tire on the upwind side,
not the one that actually wears. The difference is not great, but it's
noticable and consistent.

It wasn't until I came across this piece by John Deakin in his column
Pelican's Perch on Avweb that I realized what is happening.

"But in something like the Bearcat, the power is much higher, the torque
is correspondingly greater, and the wings are shorter, giving less
leverage. I assure you, the roll is there, and it's very noticeable. Left
tires wear out much sooner on the Bear."

Since our engines mostly turn to the left, our tires wear out on the
other side - the right side. Even with our puny little engines (compared
to the warbirds the article is about), there is enough of a difference
over time to wear out the right tire more than the left one.

And so another mystery is solved.

Mike

Deakin's articles are really a wealth of good info on many aviation
topics, for those who haven't yet come across him.

Subject: KR> Pulley assembly for Suburu engine

I'm trying to cpmplete a KR-2S started by someone else and have run into a
stumbling block.

The Suburu engine runs the generator through a belt drive. There is a
second, smaller pulley mounted flush with the generator drive pulley which
drives the vacuum pump.

This system seems to work, except that the guy who started the plane ground
the center of the pulleys down so far that they wobble terribly.

I need to replace the two pulleys and can not find anything to replace them
with.

My first question is: Does anyone know where I can get pulleys like this?
They both should have 15mm inner diameter. One is 60mm OD and the other is
100mm OD.

Second question: Does anyone have a suggestion for a better system to drive
my generator and vacuum pump?

I have a quote from a local machine shop to custom fabricate a dual pulley
assembly for me for $400, but I'm hoping to avoid that option.

Thanks,
Kirk Lacewell

KR> Looking for KR2 or KR2S

2008-10-12 Thread Jim Sellars
Lads;
I just have to share the fun I had this morning. I got up to a
frosty morning with a blinding bright sun. It was one of those fall
mornings when the leaves are just about to start turning color and the
air is crisp and the sky is blue all the way to Jupiter.
Went up to the airport at Havelock and pulled out the KR-2
trike. It's a pretty little bird. On a cold morning I was hopeful that
it would dance in the firm air. I wasn't disappointed. It leaped off
the field after a rather quick run, and climbed easily to altitude. I
tooled around the patch a few times doing touch and goes, and then
headed off towards my home for a look. Back to another near by town and
back to the field for a few more touch and goes.
It was a beautiful flight, and a thrill in the KR-2 as it cut
through the air so effortlessly, weaving back and forth, side to side at
my every whim. 1.6 hours on the Hobbs. I don't know that I will make it
to see you at the gathering but I can tell you that I am enjoying the
experience just the same.
If you're interested, this is the one that is for sale. You
should come see it, it works well and is very good value. Let me know
if you want more info, 506-856-7977.

Just checked ebay, and there is a kr2 for sale with a buy it now price
of $7,999 without an engine.

Why not get one with an engine, full instrumentation and about 150 to
200 hours left to build for $8900?

If interested, email me at a...@centraliowacil.com. Wife says it has to
go by end of September, so make me an offer.

KR> Instruments to give away

Subject: KR> Instruments to give away

I have a couple instruments to give away to a good home: 1 altimeter and
1
air speed indicator. These are instruments that I just removed from my
beloved KR2. The reason why I removed them is they are in the wrong
units
for me (US stuff), and I'm tired of making units conversions from US to
international and back in flight, so I bit the bullet and bought new
ones.
I hate the idea of throwing away the old ones, so if they can help a
fellow homebuilder, I will happily ship them away.

The two instruments are perfectly serviceable and accurate, and have
given
10 years of good service in ZS-WEC. Now, I must warn you, they are
pretty
old, and both cases have a slight problem: the ASI has one broken corner

(screw hole), and on the altimeter, the protrusion (where the setting
button is) has been partially filed out. Nothing that a bit of Epoxy and

paint can't fix, but don't expect anything new and shiny.

Anyway, the specifics are:

Air speed indicator: reads
"Indicator-Airspeed
SAE SPEC. AS-391A
MFGR. PART NO. 544
DATE OF MFGR. DEC. 1969
AEROMARINE INSTRUMENTS CO., INC
BRONX, N.Y. 10451
RANGE: 40-180 M.P.H.
CAA-TSO-C2A WT. 0.7 LBS"
Markings: Outer scale in MPH, Inner scale in KTS
White from 60 to 118; Green from 62 to 124; Yellow from 125 to 161; Red
162
(I used to put decals (sold by Aircraft Spruce) over the instrument
window
with my own color arcs, and in that case, the original color arcs don't
show)

Altimeter3-pointer , dial reads "CALIBRATED TO 20.000 FEET", settings in

inches of mercury.
No markings on case (label probably long gone, just a bit of unreadable,

white painted stamp left), but rest assured this is an old fashioned
sturdy one.

They are yours for the taking, free of charge. Just send me something
nice
and aircraft-related in return.

I'm still looking for a KR2 to buy on the eastern side of the country.
I'm hoping to catch up with Dan Heath in the near future; he's offered
to let me look over his (I promised not to drool). Anyway, anyone
knowing
of a KR2 or KR2S for sale let me know. I'd prefer a TD with fixed gear
but
will consider retracts too. I love the conventional gear; I had a
Dragonfly

I can even get the seller recognition of public access TV in Charlotte
on my small-time TV show as part of a deal.

weight is 780 and the engine is an EA-81, Subaru. It cruises with a new

new coil, wires and plugs, new exhaust header. And other things I can't

plane for something like 16000 cdn without too much grief.

2008-10-12 Thread Jim Sellars
Serge:
I'm with you, most of the lightening ideas are very hard to retro fit to the
plane after it is built and flying. Earlier discussions here talked about
trying to build as light as possible and there were not many that were under
the 500 empty weight of the original, but a great plan is to get a light
pilot. I go about 220 dressed out, and should be 180 or a bit less myself.
Kip took me flying in his KR-2 and we together must have topped 400, so the
plane can do it, and fast I might add. We were making 170 knots in his VW
powered bird. But we all could use less weight.

Guys, you don't know how good that discussion on weight makes me feel!
Because, you see, last time I did a mass and balance on my KR2, it
weighted 321 kg empty, and that is 707 lb. And I found that was definitely
on the heavy side, and I was running short on easy ideas on how to make it
lighter. Now, I will rather concentrate on convincing my airworthiness
authorities on increasing the MTOW!

This being said, I still consider three relatively easy ways to save
weight, namely:

1 - Carving the wings leading edge
It is made of solid expanded polystyrene, low density, and I suspect that
if I rotate a large PVC pipe through it, I might be able to dig out maybe
1 kg each side?.
Inconvenient: I have to make a jig to align the pipe.

2 - Making lightening holes in the engine spacers
My engine is offset forward by about 2 inches. This is done with very
large pieces of solid aluminum (they are U-channels that are about 10mm
thick!) (0.39"). I could drill plenty lightening holes in them, and maybe
shed another kg?
Inconvenient: I have to remove the engine.

3 - Changing the alternator
Currently, it is a car type alternator, which looks very heavy, and could
be replaced with, say, one from a motorized lawnmower. Another 1.5 kg?
Inconvenient: I will have to redo the pulleys and the bracket.

There is another option, favoured by my wife: put the pilot on a diet.
Inconvenients: This is going to put me in a very bad mood!

Subject: KR> Parts for Sale

Good Evening:

I'm cleaning out the garage and I'm selling the KR parts that are no longer
applicable to my project. I've swapped over to Corvair power, so the VW
motor mount is no longer required. The retracts are gone, so the fairings
and the mold for the fairings are available. Additionally, I have a couple
of brand new Whisperflo vents that I will part with for half the price
Aircraft Spruce charges.

The motor mount has never been used, and I'm asking 75.00 for it. The
Whisperflo vents and the fairings are both priced at 15.00. Check out the
link below for some photos.

&IDKey=0&isflag=ExternalLink&st=0

In addition to my regular job and building a KR, I run a small side business
handling industrial surplus. I just received a shipment of BRAND NEW shop
tools and supplies that I will sell to KR builders for a song. Every bit of
it is manufactured in the good old USA by names you would recognize like
Armstrong, 3M, and Proto. The quality is instantly recognizable; these tools
were designed and built to last a lifetime. I have dies, taps, drill bits,
files, saw blades, reamers, abrasives, and a ton of other stuff. I've
included a few pictures of the accessory sets that I have for sale on the
link above. I particularly like the electrical terminal set that
incorporates solder with heat shrink tubing. These terminals are tidy,
clean, and very solid when applied.

If you are interested in the other products I have available, please email
me. If you're interested in purchasing anything you see, act quickly as I am
moving these as fast as I get them.

Buyer pays shipping, but I get a decent deal on shipping, so it isn't too
painful.

Thanks again for looking!

Kip was at the fly-in and actually was over in New Brunsiwck last
weekend watching me fly around in C-GCJI at about 170 MPH. He's still doing
well as of the weekend past and a great guy when you need a favour too. He
flew from Linclon Maine to the fly-in and was probably second for having
travelled the farthest.

KR> New Web Page

2008-10-12 Thread Jim Sellars
Jeff:
Got to give you and the other fellows reading here some news. I
have installed the prop that I bought from you and we tried it for static
RPM. It worked great. But we noticed that the spinner was vibrating
terribly so shut the engine down and removed the spinner. It had been
changed out so many times it just didn't have another application left in it
except to be a butt catcher, I guess.
We decided to run the prop and try the plane without a spinner. We
had done some mods to extend the nose gear first to give more clearance, and
I got to the button of Havelock field and fire walled the throttle. The
plane ran along well but because of the troublesome brakes on this plane I
think I was dragging a wheel during the run, and decided to abort the flight
at my decision point. Taxied back to the button and tried again. This is a
grass strip so there is some extra drag and I have been concerned to get
more performance so that I could fly this bird like it should go, that
explains the need for the new prop.
Anyway this time I ran the plane down the field and finally it began
to fly. Not really as dramatic as I thought it should be but flying and
climbing with a modest but noticeable improvement in speed and climb rate.
I ran the plane around the patch for about half an hour, then decided to
give the guys on the ground a sight, so I rolled it over and came down on an
approach and blew by the hanger at IAS 180 mph. So sure it still goes fast
in a dive.
We brought the plane in and installed a new spinner, and decided to
wash all the bugs and grass off the airframe, and since I had it with us we
decided to use the spray wax, to make her a bit slippery. Took it back to
the button and gave it another try. Plane took of after about a count of
15, and climbed better than ever before. I leveled off at circuit height
and noticed much more response in the throttle. I was making 130 mph flat
and level and could climb aggressively on demand. Rolled over again and
made a couple of high speed passes again and some tight turns that caught me
by surprise as the "G" load came on. There I was grunting around the air
pushing the plane through it's maneuvers. The fellows on the ground said
there he goes and he's feeling that turn I'll bet, and I was.
So, absolutely can tell you that this plane is performing now as you
would imagine it should. I am very happy with the prop and how it has made
this plane into something to be impressed by. Great little KR-2 experience
now flying over Havelock airfield, playing "Top Dog" for the slower birds
below. It is a great experience. Thanks again.
Best regards
Jim

I pushed 6 photos to . Fair warning
that they aren't very good photos and are large files that you won't want to
load via modem. The plane is not ready to show yet as you'll notice that
the trim and registration numbers are missing as well as many other
finishing details if you look closely.

For those interested in the SUB installations two names come to mind.
Steve
Makish and Bob Lester are the only two that I know who have SUCCESSFULLY
flewn many hours behind Subaru engines in a KR2. They know all the
problems and
had all the bugs worked out. Since then they have removed the Subarus and
installed Corvair engines. I believe Steve has 150 hours or better on his
now
and I have 290 hours on mine. WHY the change? To move from a more
expensive, complicted engine that can wear out in 500 hrs to a much simpler
engine
that is easier to maintain and costs less to build. Now all the
installation
packaging is worked out and available and there are corvair engine running
that have over 1200 hours on them and never been down for major
maintenance. I
like the Corvair personally and will continue to fly behind it. Bill for

KR> TEST

2008-10-12 Thread Jim Sellars
Friends:
There is a KR-2 trike for sale in Havelock NB. It is a Subaru
powered model that just received a prop that has made it into the plane it
always could have been.
We struggled with an over weight, under performing, little bird that
flew wonderfully if a bit weak, slow cruise, ( 115 mph) slow climb (300 500
fpm) It now has a great prop installed that promises to deliver performance
numbers to be proud of.
I have two KR-2's and need to sell the trike. We are asking $18000
CDN (approx. $15000 USD) Will respond to any reasonable offer, It is always
hangered, insured, has approx. 500 hours total time on the airframe and
about 30 hours on the engine. Complete with radio and GPS, a good working,
happy flier. Please call 506-856-7977 if interested.
Thanks

do that, it is a job too, and needs deregistration here and registration

KR> Prop needed

2008-10-12 Thread Jim Sellars
Fellows:
I have a tryke, subaru powered KR-2, ea-81, in need of a better prop. I
have room for 58 inches of diameter, but feel like I need more pitch. The
subaru is turning 4500 RPM static, but the performance is very poor, compared
to what it seems it should do. The gear reduction, 2 to 1, builds lots of
torque, so I would like to have your opinion about where I can get a good prop.
I am thinking about a composite three blade ground adjustable, or a 58" 68"
good wooden prop. Any ideas please give me your thoughts and if you have a
prop that might work please let me know.

Fixer:
It rotates clockwise from the cockpit. So a standard SAE 1 prop, 58

I have a KR-2 for sale in Havelock NB, It is a subaru powered one and a

improvements, for 15000 Cdn. OBO
Why am I selling? I got two KR-2's can't think how to fly them both, and
don't want to be greedy. Come take one for a ride and fall in love.

Folks:
KR-2 for sale, Subaru powered trike. Clean and reliable complete with long
list of new parts and equipment. I have photos but the KR net will not allow
the size of the files as it exceeds the limits set by the moderator. Please
reply off the group so I can give you more info.
paladinfinanc...@rogers.com
Good way to get a flying model and make an impression at the gathering.
Asking $18500. CAN which is very much a discounted price when considering
purchasing power of the US dollar in CAN dollarettes.

KR> fuel injection

2008-10-12 Thread Jim Sellars
Fellows:
Need some advice about routing fuel lines. I have a fuel injection
system and have run the pressure relief side of the system back into the top
of my gasalator. This is normally where the priming system comes from I
believe.
Does this have a potential of forcing fuel back to my gas tank and
therefore giving intermittent fuel flow to the pump and fuel rail? I would
run a line from the relief back to the header tank if necessary but it will
run quite well on the ground as is. But it sure could be making bubbles I
suppose!!
Any thoughts appreciated.

Jim

high pressure pump, to the fuel rail, then the return directly back to the
fuel tank. That sounds better to me. Can I just close off that fitting on
the top of the gasolator with a plug, since I will not be using a primer?
PS thanks for the help.

KR> another update

2008-10-12 Thread Jim Sellars
Mark:
With all your preparation I beleive you are ready to make a wonderful
first flight. Plan to fly for about 45 min. minimum, carry fuel for three
hours, never want to be short, then do some practise approaches, you will
discover that you are a better pilot and you can make it a safe trip. Good
luck and have fun.

KR> high speed taxi tests

2008-10-12 Thread Jim Sellars
Guys:
Something that an instructor suggested to me is meaningful here. He
said if you discover that on landing or on taxi that the plane does start to
get away from you, Try to hold it still rather then correct it completely.
Given a second of stability, you can begin to bring it back to centerline
gently, since you are probably only a little bit off the line anyway too
radical a correction can be more trouble then it is worth.
Food for thought,

KR> Inspection hatch, tail section

2008-10-12 Thread Jim Sellars
Guys:
There is another consideration, if you think that you will need to
replace a cable do it right the first time. If you need to inspect it you
probably can see what you need to see with a mirror probe and a look through
the tail section openings. Too much complication is unnecessary on this
little bird (personal view), and we could just go flying. If you discover
at an annual that you need to get in there( the back end of the plane) cut a
hole then and make the repairs needed and seal it up after, until the next
time, ( probably years away).
The old rule is make it light, keep it simple, fly it high and fast,
smile.
Best regards

KR> Learn from my mistake. (long)

Subject: KR> Learn from my mistake. (long)

This morning I was up at daybreak and could not wait to get to the airport.
The wind was calm and the temp was 36° and the sky was beautiful blue. What
a morning to fly!!! I got to the airport at 6:30 am and pulled the KR out in
the glistening sun. Did my pre-flight, hopped in and prepped for start up.
Pumped the prime and she fired on the first revolution. I taxied to the pump
and put six gallons in each tank on top of what was already there. That
would give me a comfortable two hours in the air. Taxied to 29 and did a run
up. Pulled out on the runway and firewalled it, rotated at 60, lifted off at
70, climbed out at 95 and was at pattern altitude as I turned on downwind.
Held steady at 100 mph on downwind. Turned base then final. I was on a 1.5
mile final and reduced throttle to start bleeding off speed. Dropped the
speed brake half way and settled in at 90 mph. At one mile out, I dropped
the speed brake all the way down. Slowed to 80 by 1/2 mile and was at 70
over the numbers. I began my flare, throttle all the way out, and settled
down for a smooth as glass landing. Had her stopped at mid field turn off
(runway is 3000'). I then taxied back to runway 29 and prepared for
departure. All was clear, I made the call, firewalled itrotation again
at 60 and lifted off at 70 mph. She climbed to about 300 feet above the
ground and stopped climbing. Speed had only reached 80 mphthe PUCKER
FACTOR was really setting in as I started looking for a field to set down
in. The engine was running smooth and strongall gauges were right
onwhat's happening...I stayed very calm and began checking everything.
Throttle full...mixture rich...carb heat offall gauges were still
reading perfect except the altimeter and airspeed. I was clearing farm silos
not more than 200 ' and I think I saw the farmers daughter in the buff in a
hay stack. So, has anyone figured out the problem? All of a sudden it hit me
like a brick wall. I did not raise my speed brake after I made the last
landing. As I raised the speed brake, the airspeed quickly reached
100...110...120 and I pulled back on the stick and she climbed like a
homesick angel. Thank God. Well after I peeled my butt loose from the
seat and relaxed, I continued on for a 1.3 hour flight.

Now, before you guys start flaming me, I was not going to tell this story on
the list but the more I thought about it, the more I felt you could learn
from my mistake. Yes, I have laminated check lists I use for every phase of
flight but I made them long before I installed the speed brake so it is not
on the check list. Second, I have not installed a position indicator on the
speed brake but now have the plans done to do so using micro switches and
LED's for indicator lights. So, learn anything? I did. I know the KR will
take off with the speed brake down but I would not advise doing it. I
honestly think by staying calm and level headed and meticulously diagnosing
the problem, saved my butt today. Man I love this KR stuff. Glad I am still
with you guys and I can not wait till tomorrow morning to fly again.

KR> How many days?

2008-10-12 Thread Jim Sellars
Fellows:
With a bit of luck we, (my buddy Kipp and myself) will be at the next
flyin for the first time. A Canadian and American KR flight of two. Now it's
gonna be a struggle to get there from the dark cold north, but if we arrive,
well it will be a great time cause up here we got the best sense of humour
of anyplace, and we'll bring lots with us.
On another note I have a set of rudder peddles and a two stick assembly
for sale real cheap. Found them while working on my KR-2 the other night.
all hardware included for the peddles and looks like a pretty complete
set-up for the dual stick. Make me an offer and I will send it to you.

KR> KR for sale

2008-10-12 Thread Jim Sellars
Friends:
I have spoken to Les numerous times over the phone, and hearing the news
called him this morning with our best wishes for his early recovery. He
tells me that he has been lucky and only is minimally effected by the
stroke, on his left side. He will sell the airplane and it may need a bit
of work but sits a very pretty bird, he would let go for 15K.
He wanted me to tell everyone that he expects to make another 70 years
though so not to worry.

Just to let you know there is another KR2 that should be listed on the

KR> handheld GPS (was Kr cost)

2008-10-12 Thread Jim Sellars
Scott:
I am considering a new GPS unit for my KR2 soon to be on line. What do
you recommend after doing the research? The Lorance airmap or the Garmin?
Can one use the lap top approach with a GPS map unit cost effectively?
Look forward to your info.

KR> getting a ride/ or comparable

2008-10-12 Thread Jim Sellars
Lee:
I have a suggestion for you that really helped me. Get on a Flight Sim
2000 or better and load the extra 300 and a good joy stick. Adjust the
sensitivities of the elevator to max and the ailerons to about 25%. when
you can manage that you will be a competent KR pilot.
Give it a try and log about 20 hours of circuits and you will know that
you can get it done safely. Worked for me.

KR> Parachutes

2008-10-12 Thread Jim Sellars
Steve:\
Practically speaking if the thing won't work you don't need it. If you
have ever sat in a KR2 you would know that getting out with the wind forces
and all that would make it almost impossible to egress unless you made the
canopy an emergency release. On the other hand simply doing a forced
landing in a field or what ever you can find is the next best option, if you
are concerned ware a helmet, and stay in glide distance of the field until
you're sure the plane can fly where you want to go.

I've always thought that it would be very cool to build a war bird

Friends;
I'm sorry if you haven't heard from me, it is not for lack of trying. I
have all the info and would appreciate if you would circulate the info as
widely as you are able. I would like to sell my KR2 because I have another in
my garage and a hanger in a state of partial completion and can use the funds.
The plane is a standard KR2, on trike gear and using a Subaru engine and
belt reduction drive. It has undergone a full re-build, with many new parts,
all ignition system replaced, new tank, tires and tubes, prop, radio and GPS.
I'm in New Brunswick, at 506-856-7977 or available here. I'm asking $18000
CDN. Best bet is to come here to look it over, and go for a ride if you are
able. Then load it on a trailer and take it home before the snow flies. PS it
was -5 here this morning. Hope you enjoy the pictures and will let me know
that you received them.
Best regards

KR> Any flying KR's for sale?

2008-10-12 Thread Jim Sellars
Gene:
I have a trike subaru powered beauty located in eastern Canada. If we
were to hurry up before the snow flies I could consider bringing it to you.
I'm asking 18000 CDN, This little bird is a standard KR-2 so not the
executive seating room we're used to but a good reliable flier. New
everything since a complete re-build, cruise is about to change as I just
added a new prop but haven't had a chance to test the performance, but it
should be much improved. Best numbers so far with the old prop, 125 cruise
and 700 ft/min climb @ 70 mph. Comes with a radio, and gps, let me know if
you'd like to talk more, meanwhile I am trying to arrange photos to follow.

KR> KR-2 for Sales

2008-10-12 Thread Jim Sellars
Friends:
I have a KR-2 for sale. It is a tricycle gear, Subaru powered, pretty
little bird that is an easy flyer and good looker. Approximately 270 hours
total and many add-ons and improvements having just completed a re-build.
Comes complete with radio, GPS, new tires, gear reduction, nose gear
spring, battery, prop, new alternator, spark plugs, coil, distributor, spark
plug wires. Always hangered, I'm selling because I have two KR-2's and can't
fly more than one at a time. Actually I'm flying this plane as often as I can
until the snow starts to fly, so if there is an interest this would be the time
to move the plane. Asking $ 18000 CDN. make and offer by calling me at
506-856-7977 or emailing me off the list directly.

KR> 64 Days till the Gathering

2008-10-12 Thread Jim Sellars
Mark:
Would you help me to convey to the group that there is another
conversion from Airport orniment to flying KR-2. Today I flew the KR-2
stock tricycle aircraft for the first time. It is a re-built aircraft I
purchased from G. MacDonald on PEIlast year. It has been extensively
up-graded, and now is a flying model of the type.
Let me tell you that I experienced everything that has been described by
others on this chat line, and had moments of second thought as I accelerated
down the field at Havelock Flying Club. But this was the day and it simply
had to be given a chance to fly. I'm alittle concerned about the first
climb out as my airspeed indicator may not be very accurate, but it did
eventually climb to 1500 AGL and after a number of circuits, I made an
approach and clean landing, It was a moment for celebration for sure.
Tell me what sort of prop you are operating with, as I need to reassure
myself that the performance it okay with the set-up I have. Fellows on the
ground seemed to think that I was going pretty fast, but the airspeed
indicator was showing not more then 125MPH. With a EA-81 Soob what sort of
prop should I be looking for? Any comments?

KR> scientific blue book of KR values

2008-10-12 Thread Jim Sellars
Mark:
Let me offer some more data for KR2 buyers as to the prices I have seen,
I bought a partially finished project, just the wood , spars and good
workmanship for $2500. put an additional $12500 into it over a couple of
years. It flew very well strong, stable, and fast if a little too heavy.
I bought another project, great wood and on wheels and wings tail all
built seats, canopy controls. again for $2500 but this time it was real
dollars not the Canuck dollarettes as the first time. Add about $12,500 and
we have another plane looking to fly this summer.
During the winter I got a look at another plane over in PEI certified
( well signed off and ready to fly) looking very much like it had just come
off the factory floor. Subaru engine, trike, etc. for $ 7500 CND. It made
me want to cry with all the money I had in the other planes, but at the end
of the day there were some snags to fix before we go flying, but a pretty
plane.
I will have the trike available for sale in the spring for $ 15000 CDN
and that is a very fair price, for a very nice little bird. Goes to show
how value is in the eyes of the observer,

KR> Importing project to Canada

2008-10-12 Thread Jim Sellars
Chris: The regulations in Canada (DOT) have been changed to allow that a
project that has been inspected in the US can be brought here and finished.
Likewise the ridiculous rule that prohibited bringing a finished project
here has been removed. If it is a plane in the US or and inspected project
then it is one in Canada as well. That's what I read anyway and it works
for us in the east.
Best regards,
Jim

KR>contributions

2008-10-12 Thread Jim Sellars
I sure do second the sentiment expressed and can tell you that if I ever
make the pilgrimage from the dark cold north where I live( New Brunswick)
that I will contribute too, maybe even buy a round of drinks for all the
gang to whom we owe so much.
Best regards
Jim

KR>Topics for Discussion

2008-10-12 Thread Jim Sellars
Ron;
If you were flying a KR 2 with an EA81 what all do you for see would be
necessary to convert to a EJ 22? I would like to assess the cost and
advantages to such a change. Please let me know.

lately. And, no one answered my question last week. Therefore, I will
repeat it: "What would be the most favorable rotary engine to use with a
KR?"

the KR, I want to experiment further. After all, we are talking about
experimental aircraft...are we not? I think that I single rotar rotary
engine would be ideal. Does such an engine exist? I checked out all of the
links provided regarding rotary engines and didn't see anything about such
an engine.
