KR> anyone using a redrive on small VW engine
I have always heard of crank shafts braking when used as direct drives. I know that if you use a redrive there is a weight penalty. But does the safety factor go up as well. I have found a 1776 cc VW engine real cheap. It is brand new and has been pickled and sitting for about 8 years. The lady wants $250. With that in mind, would the redrive be a good idea. I think I would like to buy the engine if anyone can tell me of a redrive and their performance and safety. Thank you Marty Martin

KR> Douglas Fir Veneer and Yellow cedar Veneer
Just remember. Any structural plywood will have a min. of 5 layers. I have seen a 3 layer plywood claiming to be structural. But that was for buildings, not airplanes. And the veneer is the outside layer on both sides. But I would stick with Birch or Mahogany. Doug Fir has a very good chance of having grain splits caused by pitch pockets. Good luck in your search. Remember, you safety just cost more than a bargain wood. M. Look to see just what the top and bottom spar material is. As long as it is Stica Spruce or Clear Doug Fur. You will be fine. You can use a power hand planner and remove the web on both sides. As l have done this very same thing but only to one side and just at the end. So I just used a power hand planner and removed the web. The smaller the cut the more control you have. Don't get in a hurry. Of coarse, this is only the case as long as any other webbing on the project (fuselage) is correct. don't think you can correct the fuselage by glassing it. That is just no good and it adds unneeded weight. So if the fuselage is wrong, it will be good fire wood this winter. But check out any other installed webbing to see that it is installed correctly before thinking you have something that can be worked. Take a look at the engineering of the RV6. You will find a much wider (stem to stern) CG range. Then take a look at the overall size of the 2 planes, engine for one thing. And having flowing in the back of an RV6 l can tell you it was a little dicie. But if you would want to change to that engineering on a KR2s and put in place the engineering from the RV6 and apply it to the KR2s. I imagine you may find even more problems than the one l mentioned. How ever, do not take my word for it. Talk to an aeronautical engineer and see for your self. KR> Outboard fuel tanks
I have had three spam cans with wing tip tanks. And believe me. I have not always had picture perfect lands through out my flying career. And never have I had a problem that surfaced or that my annuals found any stress points on the wing structure. So, my inclination about the stress indicated by others is something that anyone should consider. But on the other hand I know that for me that until some prof is set in front of me. I will be fine with tip tanks. And yes, I am installing tip tanks on my KR1. The fuel is at least 6.5' further away from me in the cabin. And it is only 2.3 gal. per side and another 5.8 gal. in ea. outside wing panel in alum. tubes. I will be using an auto fuel pump to bring the fuel to the engine with an electric fuel pump boost. I have a picture on my desk top of a KR2 with tip tanks in flight. I guess I just need more prof if I were not to install them. For now, tip tanks a coming. M. Greg Martin

Hello KR netters I am looking to trade my TriQ200 project for a KR2s project. The TriQ is complete but for the instruments, plumbing and engine. Next weekend, the 9th of Oct. I will be able to take photos of the TriQ. The canard, wings, tail section, fuel tanks and lines to firewall are in. I have the new nose gear and wheel farings. I have the cowling by Ernest Martin, Plenum cooling ducts. The origonal cowling design is also included. All parts and pieces are there to complete except for those mentioned above but you will have to paint. What I am looking for is a project with all parts and pieces to complete. I will consider a standard KR2 but would prefer a 'S' model. I would like to find one that is at least 42" wide at the shoalder area. Give me a call and I will tell you all that I can. 661-747-8608. KR> dual stick assembly
Bob Thank you for your input. I guess I just forgot about the elbow. But with the floor stick between my legs I used my leg to rest my elbow and in Don's plane I remember a small arm rest. But I was thinking that I had some king of mind telepathy going on here, HAHA. So, I guess I was correct in assuming I understood what I meant about resting my elbow, Whee! That is what happens when I do not take to time to think the program out in it's entirety. And yes, it is the input from the pilot that makes the plane seem so sensitive. How ever, if a person does not make room available for the side stick (on the wall) I do not think that the proper geometry can be put together. And to me that would mean that if I were building a KR2S I would make it 42" wide, not the stock 38" wide. Just my thoughts on the side stick. Greg Martin Bob Lee wrote: > Larry Flesner wrote: > << The general "side stick" setup has your arm laying on an arm rest and > you > move the stick with wrist action. >> > > Greg Martin wrote: > << I have had a VeriEze and of coarse they have a side stick and it is > not that sensitive. KR> dual stick assembly
Pat Yes, I am sure that the geometry of the side stick or any location for a stick would play heavily on the sensitivity of the control of the plane. But from what I notice on Don's design was that there was not enough room to allow the geometry of that installation to be improved. I have had a VeriEze and of coarse they have a side stick and it is not that sensitive. I liked it very much. And yes, the geometry was set up correctly. It had the needed room for that installation. But my suggestion was simply that for a person starting out. I would suggest a stick coming up from the floor. And on KR2S I am sure that it would not be as sensitive as on a regular KR2. Just thinking of safety. Would you not shoot for something safer to start with. Experience is a great instructor and educator. KR> Re: stall speed reduction
Ed I'm sure that you mean to say that an airworthiness certificate is issued. As home built (kits) are not certified. About 8 years ago, I had asked if I could put on vortex generators or a cuffed leading edge. And yes, I could put I had not asked in reference to an LSA. It was for improving (shorting) my take off and landing roll. But my guess is that the vortex generators would do the same. A couple of Long EZE's did this very thing and they both said that they improved their numbers. And I would think that VG's would be a lot simpler. As far as the LSA. I don't know what that would do for that. But you could ask your local DAR. Greg Martin I'm not sure the FAA would approve that. I think a "retrofit" would have to be done before the KR was ever certified. KR> Tandem seating PT II
Dustin Don't forget. You can find a VariEze that needs finishing and go to town and finish it. I had one and liked it very much. But the wife did not like sitting behind me. Go figure. Jeff Send it to me and I'll mail it to you. I have a 42" wide plotter. Make sure you have all the imfo on the plan. Also, put your address and phone numbers so I can contact you. Yes, Contact magazine went to the fly-in last year for the Tandem Wing Fly-in. It was in Jean, NV. But you could ask Contact if they are going to the Jean fly-in on the 27 of April. How ever, I'm going anyway. Do you believe that your going to go? Let me know. M. Greg Martin

I'm putting clam shell type doors on it and I had a friend with a computer program run a test for projected speed. I gained about 8mph. That's not bad. I'm just finishing up my TriQ200. When I done. I'll take the KR down out of the rafters (around the end of January) and photo the little design. I think some of you guys will like it. M. Greg Martin
