KR> Hypoxia

2014-07-11 Thread Raymond Fuenzalida
Hello All,
Not KR related, but definitely aviation related. The 99's are having a
convention this week in New Orleans and one of the seminars was/is on
hypoxia and is open to all pilots in the area. I went there (instead of
listening to Mark) on Wednesday and it was excellent. it's one thing to
read about what happens if you fly too high without oxygen, it's another to
feel it.
The class was about an hour and a half and went over the types of hypoxia,
symptoms, ATC examples (very cool) and what to do about it. Then you get
to go to a chamber that they equalize at 25,000'. And the thing is, the
list of symptoms are only potential symptoms and everyone reacts
differently. Nausea, headaches, tunnel vision etc.
So you start at 25,000'. They say you have 3 minutes (at that altitude) to
get yourself out of trouble. That may be too generous. We had an oxygen
sensor on us (to measure oxygen in the blood) and you start at 97% or
higher. And then it drops. by the time you are in the 60's you are done.
We also had a clipboard to log the onset of any symptoms - every minute.
And we had a sheet with a simple maze and some math problems.
In my case, the only symptom I felt was a tingling in my fingertips. But
by the third minute, I could not do the maze (kindergarden level) nor any
simple math problems. I could barely write a number. I simply could not
focus. 8x7 was impossible. Once you put the mask on, after 3 or 4 deep
breaths, you are back to normal. it's that quick.
And of course the reality is that you can suffer from hypoxia at much, much
lower altitudes (they said start worrying about it over 8,000 - especially
at night).
For me, the problem is that I didn't get a headache or nausea or anything I
could react to. I simply lost the ability to focus. Which means I could
not even know that I am losing control. But it was a heck of a thing and
very instructive in highlighting the dangers of hypoxia.
I strongly recommend that if you ever get the chance to experience it - do
it. And before I do any high flying I will get an oxygen setup.

KR> Gathering

2014-07-16 Thread Raymond Fuenzalida
hello All,
I am now registered for the gathering and just wanted to see if anyone
wanted to share a room at the Chino hotel. I will be checking in on the
3rd and departing on the 7th. Sadly, I will be coming via Southwest but
that's they way the cookie crumbles. So let me know if anyone's
interested. Thanks.

KR> Gathering

2014-07-16 Thread Raymond Fuenzalida
Hey Steve,
I did finally register and I am looking forward to coming out to Chino. My
only other trip in that area was a 5 hour layover in L.A. So, this will be
all new.
Just saw the agenda as to what you have proposed for the Gathering. I have
several comments.
1. Thank you for making most of the seminars "hands on". I find those so
much more informative and useful than a lecture. Please let me know what
the cost of the materials will be for the seminars. I don't expect you
guys to actually have to buy materials for me to have and I intend to
attend all of them. So to be clear, this means I will be leaving with an
actual grounding buss that is designed specifically for the KR2S and that I
can just bolt into my project?
2. As for the fiberglassing seminar, I still consider myself a newbie but I
have been doing some glassing on a 66' Corvair coupe. And I have been
surprised at how easy it is and how well it has worked out. Of course,
it's for a car so I didn't care about weight. So I look forward to
learning how to fiberglass properly on my KR2S. And I know all of my
supplies have not been cheap but that's probably because I wasted a lot.
hopefully you'll show me how to stop doing that.
3. The tour Saturday morning should be a blast. Very much look forward to
that. Will there be enough seats to accommodate people who fly in via
Southwest? Can you see if the local FBO might make you a deal on a rental
and you just charge anybody interested (I am) what the seat costs? if not,
are there two other guys coming who might want to split a rental with me?
4. I even really want to make my own antenna. And I can take it home with
me and use it? Too cool.

No offense to Larry, but this might be the best Gathering I've attended.
And I'm sending this to the KRnet because of the following.

May I make a suggestion? I've been to four separate Corvair colleges and I
have had a great time at all of them. They were all hands on all the
time. Even when all I did was help someone else I still had fun - getting
experience and knowledge. One of the things they did was have a fee up
front for whatever the costs were - primarily food. All the other stuff WW
just sold flat out. And I sure you will be selling whatever items you
carry to whoever wants them. At least it'll save the shipping cost.
And in looking at what you are proposing, I know there is a cost for the
materials you will need to buy that you will be giving out. I don't have a
problem paying for that but I didn't see the fee anywhere. However, I do
ask that you consider setting up the breakfast and lunches as part of the
cost just like at the Corvair colleges. That way no one doesn't have to
really stop what they're doing. No one will have to leave the hangar, the
airport (is there an onsite restaurant close by?) or anything else. The
group can stay together and keep working/learning the whole time. Nothing
elaborate; Donut/danish breakfast, hamburger/hotdog lunch. Dinner will be
our chance to check out the town. But very importantly, please make sure
you have some nice area for after hours relaxation and conversation (Mount
Vernon was great).
So set up some kind of paypal thing - you probably already have that with
NVaero and let me know what the fee is. At least for the materials. Just
like WW, all I expect from you is your knowledge and experience.
Personally, I would prefer to add the food in as well. It would save me
time from having to go somewhere for breakfast and lunch - I hope everybody
else registering agrees. Let me know. Thanks.

KR> Gathering arrival

2014-07-17 Thread Raymond Fuenzalida
Per the question as to arrivals, I will be coming in Wednesday noonish. I
just wanted a day to drive around and see the town. I figured that when
the Gathering actually begins, I'll just be there all day and some of the
evening.
Will also have a car if anyone needs a ride.

2014-07-19 Thread Raymond Fuenzalida
Sorry to be hogging the internet airwaves. I'm usually more of just a
reader. But I mentioned that I just did the 'High Altitude Training"
seminar at the 99's conference. It was a blast and very educational.
One of the area women wrote a blog about it and she summed up everything
perfectly. So if you want a good explanation of hypoxia (maybe better than
mine). just read her blog.

2014-09-08 Thread Raymond Fuenzalida
Yes it was an excellent Gathering. I also enjoyed the workshops and the
knowledge. But the best thing was the motivation from seeing all the other
KR's. I want to be one of those guys who flies his plane cross country at
the drop of a hat. My goal is to fly myself to Oregon. Maybe it's not
doable, but I will try.
Thanks to Steve for hosting but mostly to the other guys for motivation.

KR> THANKS STEVE

2014-09-19 Thread Raymond Fuenzalida
I'll agree with everything Pete said but I disagree with you in that I
thought the weather was great. If you think that was hot, do not come to
New Orleans in the summer. You'll think you were in the 7th circle of hell.
Also, to get back on my soapbox, I think there should be a registration fee
for the Gathering. We all know that nothing in the world is free. Whether
it's hangar rentals, tables and chairs, an airport fee, materials or
whatever, there is a cost. Any Gathering host is donating a bunch of their
time, effort and expertise. I think that's enough to ask.

KR> AGM batteries

2015-02-16 Thread Raymond Fuenzalida
Just want to say thanks to all of you gurus on the net. The information -
in this case about batteries - is invaluable. I often feel at a loss
compared to everyone else in this group. I'm not a mechanic or an
engineer or build fiberglass boats for a living or anything like that. I
handle commercial real estate (if you need a warehouse call me) and the
learning curve has been steep. but it is occurring. I already have a
running Corvair engine (built myself). And I hope to fly my KR2S one day.
And when I do, it will be thanks to all of the tidbits of knowledge I have
gleaned from all of you.
Please keep the informational posts going.
The only bad part of it is I may be spending too much time reading and
thinking and not enough time doing.

I also have the adapter for the hand held radio. So I know I can listen
from my headset with no problem. Didn't have 'transmit" worked out yet. I
guess I could just do it from the radio itself, but there should be a
better way. If you do end up with a schematic or just detailed
instructions on how to do it, I would appreciate a copy. Thanks.

KR> spar attachments

2015-06-12 Thread Raymond Fuenzalida
hello all,
Just a quick question. I am redoing the waf's on the wings I have (got
beautiful ones from Dan - thanks Dan) and I have a question about the
fittings and bolts. I am going to go ahead and do it because it makes
sense but I hadn't heard anyone mention it before. Of course I am priming
and painting the waf's themselves. A couple of other builders were looking
at what I was doing and both recommended that I use a marine varnish on the
bolts before I put them through the spars. If not, they said that the AN
bolts would delaminate and rot the wood spars from the inside. It's easy
to do, so no problem, but just curious... Is this true or just an old wives
tail?

KR> engine

2015-12-10 Thread Raymond Fuenzalida
Hello All,
This isn't KR business but is aviation, so please be patient.
As some of you know, I have a partnership involving a Beechcraft
Sundowner. And the bad news is that we just had a catastrophic engine
failure. Due to an oil failure, one of the connecting rods snapped and
came through the case. The good news is that my partner is apparently an
excellent pilot as he landed on a street (missing wires and poles) with no
damage to the plane. The funny part is that since he is a cop, he
immediately called out the force who closed off the roads and just towed
him back to the airport - about 5 miles.
The ongoing problem is that we need an engine. The Sundowner had an O-360
AFK. Anybody got one? Know of someone who does? We may be able to get by
with a case, crank, one cylinder etc. won't know until we tear it down and
have everything inspected. All the peripherals are OK.
So, if anyone has any suggestions, would love to hear them. Please contact
me off net.
Thanks.

2014-05-24 Thread Raymond Fuenzalida via KRnet
Now that we can put all of the name changing stuff behind us, we can start
talking about building again. For me, I have been distracted by car
projects (been working on a 66" Corvair coupe and an Ultravan) and a plane
project I foolishly bought. I had bought a Cessna 175 with the geared
engine and it was just filling up my hangar so there was no room to work on
anything - just push planes around.
But I did finally manage to sell it and they came and picked it up today.
So, now my hangar is really spacious. And I hope to get back to my KR2S.
My fuselage is done and sitting on wheels. my engine is done (4 Corvair
colleges) and test run. I have all the stuff to build the wings - spars,
ribs, fuel tanks and wing skins - but I went ahead and bought Dan Heath's
old wings because he's working on a panther now. That should be a big jump
start. Monday morning I am going to try and fit them. Maybe they'll work,
maybe not, but at least it is some forward movement. Then it's
electronics. Will let you guys know what happens.

Re: KR> C-150 with O-200

2017-07-08 Thread Raymond Fuenzalida via KRnet
Definitely buy it ASAP. I just did that. Bought an O-200 that only has
1,086 hours on the engine, but has not flown in a decade. getting it ready
for a test run. Worst case scenario is that I get a lot of good parts that
still are worth more than what I paid for it. best case scenario is I get
a working engine. Yes, money will still be spent on rebuilding carbs,
mags, changing gaskets etc. But that's a fraction of starting from scratch.

And of course the infamous Sundowner made it home as well. Sucked a little
more gas and still went a little slower, but remember guys, that tortoise
did beat the hare.
Glad everybody made it with no issues. I haven't seen the weather out
west Is everybody OK?
An excellent Gathering. had fun. Got to reconnect with old friends. Got
some great ideas. But mostly, the inspiration to get off my butt and just
get it down. I promise to work very hard at it this year. We'll see how I
get to Mount Vernon next year.
Thanks Rob and to all of your EAA friends and helpers. It is not a one man

Re: KR> fuel flow sensor

2017-12-21 Thread Raymond Fuenzalida via KRnet
Agree with Larry. If I end up with a fuel sensor when I finally get all my
instruments, so be it. if not, I'm not worried. I always fly by time. I
plan and book the maximum burn in my Sundowner at 10 gallons per hour.
Leaned out at altitude, I can get it just under 8. That not only covers my
personal reserves, but always a little bit more. If I ever have an
accident in a plane it won't be because of lack of fuel. I'll do the same
in my eventual KR2S.

When I fly to Mount Vernon from New Orleans, I plan for a 5 1/2 hour
flight. I have 5 1/2 hours of fuel (at max burn). But I never fly more
than 4 1/2. Usually need to stop before then anyway. This particular
flight ( a couple of years ago) I had a great tailwind. Did the math while
flying, blew past my planned fuel stop (usually West Memphis at 3 1/2
hours) and made it to Mount Vernon in just over 4 hours and 20 minutes.
When I refueled, I bought 34 gallons. I have 56 total.

Just had to state this. You northern guys talk about flying in cold air -
better lift, smoother, no density altitude issues etc.
Well it got cold here and the place is shut down. Couldn't get to the
airport if I wanted to, much less go flying. Or even to work on anything
(work is closed, maybe tomorrow too). I always read those reports of you
guys flying and having a great time in cold air. We're paralyzed. Roads
and bridges are closed. Even the Interstate around here was closed.
There are differences between the north and the south.

KR> props

2018-02-06 Thread Raymond Fuenzalida via KRnet
Hello All,
Am looking for a prop for an O-200 engine. Just want one for testing
purposes. Still trying to figure out what prop/pitch to buy. In the
interim, I would like a loaner prop. Anybody have an old one that they're
not using? Let me borrow it and I'll give it back at the Gathering. Or
just sell it to me. Not worried about this being my permanent prop but if
it's a good one it could be. Thanks.

Also, Jeff and Larry, you both have prop extensions on your O-200's. Why?
Do I need one as well? If so, anybody got one of those they don't need as
well?

KR> mechanicals

2018-02-11 Thread Raymond Fuenzalida via KRnet
Hello Guys,
Just wanted to mention something that came up today that everyone should
know. I bought a new plane power alternator. You need to remove the gear
from your old one and reuse it on the new alternator (except for bushings -
those are supposed to be new). Pretty easy to take off and easy to put
back on.
In this case, an A& P friend happened to pass by my hangar just to say Hi.
I told him what I was doing and he stopped me right there. He had looked
at the new alternator and said that I had to redo it. There is a cotter
pin that holds the nut down. Apparently I had bent it the wrong way and it
was cracked and therefore had to be redone. I have installed a bunch of
cotter pins in my life with never a second thought. When I was young, I
remember hammering them straight and reusing them.
However, in this case, I had bent the tines sideways (because I did not
want it sticking out farther than the shaft itself. And by doing it that
way, I had bent it in a way it was not designed for and thus it had a
small crack. Said it could fall off later in time, and damage the engine.
Pulled it out, put a new one in (bent up with a proper curl) that stuck up
over the shaft itself.
Then I installed the new alternator.
The point here is that there are a lot of little things that can cause you
pain in the future. Don't think that it's "common knowledge" and keep it
to yourself. Share these tidbits with everyone. You never know who knows
what.

For the Gathering - you engine guys - Examples of a properly installed part
versus one done improperly could be a great forum.
Thanks.

Re: KR> Oxygen

2018-07-06 Thread Raymond Fuenzalida via KRnet
Please accept my apology for violating the etiquette of replying this way,
but the subject demands it. I mentioned a few years ago I was able to
experience a high altitude chamber (set to simulate 25,000' msl).
In less than 5 minutes I couldn't use a pencil much less fly a plane. And
YOU DO NOT KNOW IT. You will die a happy camper because with hypoxia you
are usually euphoric. I certainly was.
At lower altitudes it may take longer but the net result may be the same.
Why chance it?
I did just pick up an oxygen tank and regulator like Mike has (thanks for
the idea Mike) and intend to use it over 10,000' day VFR and 8,000' night.
My personal selected minimums.
Maybe I'll change those numbers as time goes by and I get to experiment
with them.
We need every little safety factor we can get. And this one is easy.

Hello All,
Am also throwing this out to everyone. I will be flying a Sundowner from
New Orleans on up to Mount Vernon. Anybody need a ride? That's vaguely on
the way?
Maybe share some gas? For me it's mostly due north. Could take up to two
(three if skinny) riders.
Or we'll fly together and make a "meet up".
Was planning on going up Thursday morning, come back Sunday. If

Re: KR> 16 days and counting...

2018-09-04 Thread Raymond Fuenzalida via KRnet
I'm ready. Watching the weather. We should be fine.
Couple of years ago there was a storm in the Gulf, far enough out to be
safe. Gave me a 40 knot tailwind. Fantastic.
But, even if I'm forced to drive, I'll still be there.

I was just about to check the weather again. Storming cats and dogs here
right now. Hope Mother Nature gets it all out of her system by Thursday.
Thanks for the weather update. I'll check anyway. But lookin' good.

Re: KR> 3 Days...

2018-09-10 Thread Raymond Fuenzalida via KRnet
I see a couple of guys are driving and it looks like the weather will be
good enough to fly.
If anyone on my route or at least close to it - mostly due north from New
Orleans - is not going because they don't have a ride, call me.
Unless the weather changes, I'm flying.
See you Thursday.

KR> Mount Vernon

2018-09-11 Thread Raymond Fuenzalida via KRnet
Hey Guys,
Just wanted to put this out front. I was talking with one of our local
guys here in New Orleans. Bever Borne is the distributor for one of the
ultralights. He is actually the manufacturer. And I mentioned that I was
going up to Mount Vernon for a convention. Apparently he had just been
there. He started raving about Chris Collins. How that was what an
airport manager should be. he could not say enough good stuff.
Once we made sure it was the same place, he said it would be a great
convention because of Chris. So, looks like our guy and the airport at
Mount Vernon has a reputation - the good kind.

Is there a KR group get together? Can we make one?
