KR> Hiney placement KR2 - Single

2010-01-19 Thread Richard Collins
I originally flew my KR2 from the left, but, because of my height, I got a
stiff neck from holding my head at an angle.  I then started flying from the
center.  The only difference I noticed was that I just had to get used to what
it looked like to fly from the center.  However, there was no noticeable
difference in flight characteristics that I could tell.

The KR2 I had was stable, but, when I started flying from the center, I cut the
control stick in half so I could swing my leg over the stick and continue to
land from the left side.  I will say its sensitivity to pitch went up in spades.

I took a look at Brad Ankerstar's KR2 pictures and it has raised a question
(at least for me).

Brad's KR2 appears to be a single seat version with the pilot seat off the
fuselage centerline to the left with some type of storage compartment on the
right.

I am doing a mock up of my cockpit of my KR2 (single place) at this time
(too cold for glass work) and I am planning on putting my hiney on the
centerline.  My thought process is related to balance in roll.

Now having said that I just realized that many of those who are building 2
place KR's tend to fly then solo a lot and thus they are off the centerline
with their hineys.

So how big of a deal is it to have the CG left or right of the centerline?
Do those with wing tanks compensate by using fuel burns to balance?  What
about aileron trim tabs for this (I would rather not).

By the way from what I can tell I make about 2 Mark Langfords tipping the
scale at 240.

KR> Firewall separation, not from normal use.

2009-06-03 Thread Richard Collins
We bought a second home in Arizona.  I have thought about moving the AVID to AZ
via trailer.  I have also thought about flying it until I approach more hostile
terrain, then trailer it through the mountain ranges, hoping to avoid bouncing
it around as much as possible.  But either way,  I am glad I saw  your post on
this issue.  Even though the Rotax 503, including, the PSRU weighs less than
the VW 1915 on the Beast, I know now that I will remove the engine when
trailering, if I decide to make the trip.

I was so unaware of all the hidden "monsters" in the KR2, which, had I built it
myself, I may have been able to anticipate.  I wonder at times if other non
builders who have bought KR2s were as ill prepared to be an owner as I was.
Only a rhetorical question for me, but it may be worth a discussion on the net.
I cannot imagine a seller who would have been more informative and helpful
than you, and, still, I was unable to manage the "Little Beast".  Hope things
are going well with you, your family and the Blackbird.

Yours, as always, Rick

I suggest that you also remove the engine.  When the Little Beast was
delivered here for repairs, and I removed the front deck, I found that the
firewall was separating from the cross member shelf.  I am certain that it
was caused by the long trip with the engine on the plane.  I will never move
one again without removing the engine first.

Moral of that story: If you are going to trailer an aircraft, fasten the
tires, not the airframe to the trailer so the spring gear and tires can do
what they were designed to do.  And use a trailer appropriate for the job.
You might not shake an engine loose on that one trip to the airport, but how

long will it take after you have been flying a while after some needless
abuse?

KR> KR-2 for sale - Moving to China for 3-4 years

2008-10-12 Thread Richard Collins
Chuck,

I am interested in your KR-2 if it is a flying KR-2. I am not concerned
about the interior and the headroom. I am large myself, but I will convert it
into a KR 1.5. Do you have good records for it. Is it registered with FAA?

Here is my situation. I cannot get to Houston until December 19th, weather
permitting, December 20th if weather is unfavorable. I want to trailer it
home, rather than fly it.

I have no idea about the geography as to where you have the airplane, but if
you are out of the country by the dates I have given you, then could you leave
my identification, which I will provide upon conclusion of the sale, with your
airport personnel, so they can let me into your hangar to get the plane?

My major request would be for you to have all the paper work in order and in
an envelope which could be mailed to me when you send the receipt for my
payment.

I would also like for the wings to be off the plane and the connecting parts
for the wings to be placed into two plastic freezer boxes labeled "left wing"
and "right wing" so that it will be relatively simple to put the wings back on
when I get to Indiana.

I can pay you via PayPal, Cashier's Check or Personal Check. I am offering
you $7000.00.

I can get this transacted tomorrow, if you will get in touch with me.

KR> Engine back in service

2008-10-12 Thread Richard Collins
Dan,

I'm back on the net. After Annie passed away I adopted one of my
step-grandsons and remarried. It has been a long and difficult time. However,
I do have an A&E who is going to help restore N886KR. I know it will take a
while, but he is so very good. I hope all is well. Judging from the note
below, you have not flown N64KR. What patience! Anyway, I have an AVID I've
been flying, and I done some J3 Cub flying. Great fun in both.

After I added the oil filter and "-8" lines, my OP is not as high as it had
been before, and it would not come up just by spinning the engine with the
plugs out, however, almost immediately after starting it, the OP went to 50
and remained above 25 at 2000 RPM. The OT never got above 160 and the CHT
never got above 300.

I am seriously considering holding off on flying her until I can add a drag
device like a belly board. I am concerned that these long wings will keep
this bird afloat way too long.

I have two more run-in sessions that I expect to complete on Monday and then
I will make the final decision on the belly board.

Ron,

I am, as you, interested in the sport pilot concept, mainly because I am
aging and anticipate that I will not always be able to pass the physical.
So, after this one runs out, I am going to forego anymore flight physicals.
I am curious about how you came to the conclusion that the Hershey Bar wing
x 10 ft x slotted will accomplish the sport pilot limitations. Could you
send me some links you looked at or pictures, graphs etc that you studied?

PS. When you're here this summer, I would really like to talk to you and
Bill Thompson (I've asked him to get the thing flying again) and see what
can be done, and how long it will take. I have about 20 months left on my

KR>Elevator trim

2008-10-12 Thread Richard Collins
I used to practice this technique in my Taylorcraft when I would get bored
and could think of nothing else to do except "what ifs". I found I could
use the elevator trim quite successfully to raise and lower the pitch. I
also used to doors to substitute for rudder. I often would get the T-craft
close enough to the runway that I felt I could have landed and at least
walked away from the landing. I never landed using trim and doors. As for
aileron trim, it seemed that the added pressure on the side I had opened the
door must have created enough positive pressure under the wing to lift it.
I never created a situation where I had to grab the aileron control in order
to save the plane.

KR>Response to recent General Avaition News Story

2008-10-12 Thread Richard Collins
Dear friends on the KRnet,

I am so fed up with all of the media hype on what might happen if someone
turns a private airplane into a bomb. Today's news brought us no additional
relief when NBC showed a "turn and bank by turn and bank" account of a pilot
from PA who decided to break airspace regulations in three major airports.
(Has anyone ever watched cop chases on TV? The chases certainly don't make
the news, and the film footage those crazies have generated must be
astronomical.)

I suggest that we all turn our airplanes over to the government so no one
will be afraid of those of us who fly turning our beloved airplanes into
plane bombs (or is it plain bombs). At the same time we should turn in our
cars, so no one will be afraid of car bombs we might build. We should even
turn in our bodies so no one will be afraid of any of us deciding to become
a suicide bomber. I think I will even turn in my wife's purse. I'm sure
the size of that thing would scare almost anyone out of their wits. We now
know, by virtue of a California Judge's decision that it is far better to
let John Hinckley go unsupervised than to let the general aviation pilot
roam the skies, fulfill his dreams, share the glory of flight with the
others, and come home at the end of the day full of wonderful stories.

I am a general aviation pilot and have just reviewed your story concerning
the security risks at general aviation airports. I have also reviewed the
responses from the AOPA and the EAA, two organizations representing hundreds
of thousands of pilots and aviation enthusiasts.

I feel your reporting represented a significant lack of depth and
balance. While there is a risk with many everyday activities and there are
many that could be put to use by those intending to bring harm to others,
you fail to point out the positive aspects of the activities of pilots and
aviation supports. Private use airports and fly-in communities are no
different than any other subdivision or neighborhood in the United States
that allows a group of like minded to live and congregate together. I agree
with the premise that there is a risk in a single individual taking it upon
himself to create a flying bomb out of a general aviation aircraft. But
there are risks associated with the freedoms we enjoy as pilots in the
United States, and as there are risks with participation in many aspects of
our lives, the likelihood of this use of a general aviation aircraft is very
low. Many risk assessments have been done by our federal government since
9/11, and when prioritizing our needs, they placed this risk at a very low
level.

Your report mentions nothing of the patriotism of the pilots, aviation
enthusiasts, or the residents of these communities. Many are retired
military, retired airline pilots, or people who know and respect the use
general aviation aircraft. Just as you would lock your car, look out your
window, and monitor who drives up and down your street, these residents
watch over their "neighborhood"

As a provider of news and information, you should take it upon
yourselves to provide balanced information to allow your viewers to form an
opinion that is based on their conclusions, not yours.
