KR> Another FIRST FLIGHT
Congratulations go out to PETE BRAUTIGAM of Wisconsin. He made his first flight in his Corvair powered KR-2S (N936PB) this morning at 7:15 am. Pete stated the flight went very well and the plane flew great. He was in the air for about 25 minutes when he seen his oil temps hit 262°F per the EIS. This concerned him so he decided to terminate the flight. Pete made one practice approach to land, went around and made the landing. Pete stated the wheel landing was smooth but the KR did not want to land. Pete said he used all 5000' of runway to get the KR stopped. Once he was on the taxiway, he realized he forgot to use his flaps. I bet he stops a lot quicker next time. Pete's Corvair engine was special built by William Wynne as a clockwise rotation engine. Pete would like to know what you Corvair guys think about his 262° oil temps? For you KR guys, Pete said he is definitely flying his KR to the Gathering. Pete is not on the Net, so if you would like to congratulate him his e-mail is mailto:ras...@athenet.net Mark Jones Mueller Sales Corp. 3725 N. 126th Street Brookfield, WI 53005 PH: 262-781-5310 800-242-2219 Fax: 262-781-4130 Mailto:mjo...@muellersales.com Web: http://www.muellersales.com

> Pete would like to know what you Corvair guys think about his 262° oil > temps. I've seen 265F on a very long climb to high altitude (before I improved the oil cooler inlet duct), and I didn't like it. I throttled back a little and made the climb shallower, and it started to come down. Even today on super hot days in a long climb it'll get up to 235, so I'm considering a larger oil cooler. Right now I have the stock Corvair folded fin cooler. If you're using something other than a folded fin cooler (if you're using stock Corvair), that's an easy upgrade, as the footprint will be the same. Clark's sells them for something like $12 used. It was standard on the 60 models (I think), but was discontinued due to cost and changed to the less efficient plate type coolers later. Congratulations Pete, and we'll see you at the Gathering... Pete, Congratulations and welcome to the family, As for the oil temp I have mine redlined at 265 deg and I just don't like to see them above 230 and that only happens on a long climb on a hot day. Where he is reading the temp may have some bearing on the out come though.
