Don't know about the turbine KR or Roberts Muse's KR, but I saw Bobby Muse's KR was destroyed in southern California in a fatal crash by the new owner trying to fly it home in ridiculously high winds. Seems to me that Don Betcham's KR ended up upside down somewhere near Rapid City, SD in an accident, but the new owner walked away. -Jeff Scott Los Alamos, NM ? ? ? Lots of other good info available also if you google "faa accident report kr2". I've often wondered what happened to several KRs I've seen in the past like Robert Muse's KR , the turbine KR seen at the Perry, Oklahoma KR Gathering in the late 90's, and the retractable gear KR owned by the Gathering host at Perry. Hello Flyers; After meeting many of you at the 2011 KR Gathering it became quite evident that we as a group are profoundly different than ordinary pilots and aviation enthusiasts. We strive for the satisfaction of building our own aircraft, we have the intestinal fortitude to fly them, we work diligently to move beyond just mastering our craft in order to thrive in the fringes of aviation. I wont speculate what happened with this incident but one of the things that we can do to promote KR safety is form regional support groups that assist in building, sharing technical resources, participate in KR Activities (fly outs, demonstrations, worshops etc) and actively promote the development of KR aircraft and sound building practices. The KR site is fantastic for providing information but hands on activities would be just as valuable. I've always thought that Southern California should have one of these builder/flyer groups. I know that there are a few flying KR-2's in this area but I have not seen any organized KR events here in So. Cal. There may also be a few KR's in people's garages that could be brought back out into the light and made airworthy. If anyone local is interested in building or finishing their KR in the area east of Los Angeles perhaps we can contribute toward renting a large hangar in Chino, CA (30 mi east of Los Angeles where NVaero is located) and re-invigorate sound KR building and flying in So. Cal that will hopefully spread throughout the rest of the country. Heck... I'd like to see a California KR Brigade of 7 -12 KR's flying to the 40th anniversary KR Gathering coming year. All As a buyer of a pre-built boat stage KR2S I have thought about these things too. But I have taken the path of mitigating the risk with whatever steps are needed (both plane and pilot)before I fly it. I don't know what happened with the accident and the pilot may have done everything he felt he could to reduce the risk of failure to include using the Internet as a source of information. If he did then you can say it was just his time and we don't get to chose that time. If not, then he took a risk he did not need to take, but chose to take, and he lost. I hope to learn something from this tragedy and may Mr Berry RIP. Hey Guys,This is indeed sad. I have long tought about where did many of the KR planes go that were shown in the past,(sold to someone and hidden away) Then there are the folks that are out there stilll building that do not have internet service, may not want it or may not be comfortable using it. In any case there are a number of builders and pilots that are not on this group. If this group had a charter it certainly would have some wording about promoting and educating people about the construction and flying of the KR series aircraft. The way I see it to answer the specfic question is not what can we learn from this but much more to the point is what can we teach to prevent this. We promote ourselves by word of mouth and anyone with a little internet savay can search us out. But there has got to be more that we can do to make ourselves know. I am thinking that anyone that has a printed brouchour could add a line pointing towards KRnet for construction suppport. (Steve G.? may already be there I didn't look) Maybe it is time to get an article published about the KR and the up coming 40th aniversary would make a worthy excuse. Another thing that I do is go see people and give a ride. I do not have anymore money to do that than anyone else on this list but I certainly think that is important. Many of you don't know but I flew hang gliders for 20 years- The sport remained selfregulating through the efforts of the piolots and instructors to lower the accident rates. This means on the small scale of looking over the shoulder of the next guy. Even asking the simple question "are you sure about that" can have wide spread results. No one plans on going out and dieing today. Joe Horton, Coopersburg, PA. -- Forwarded Message -- From: Brian Coss briancossdul...@gmail.com Gosh the accident is heart wrenching! I would agree, though short of pulling up too hard and causing a dive or sucide it seems like it would be pretty un-natural. There is barely anything left of that plane at all. KR> KR Crash Mystery Solved
NTSB Identification: NYC06LA092 14 CFR Part 91: General Aviation Accident occurred Tuesday, April 11, 2006 in North Andover, MA Aircraft: Michaud KR2S, registration: N24065 Injuries: 1 Minor. This is preliminary information, subject to change, and may contain errors. Any errors in this report will be corrected when the final report has been completed. On April 11, 2006, at 0814 eastern daylight time, a homebuilt KR2S, N24065, was substantially damaged during a forced landing near North Andover, Massachusetts, following a partial loss of engine power while departing Lawrence Municipal Airport (LWM), Lawrence, Massachusetts. The certificated private pilot sustained minor injuries. Visual meteorological conditions prevailed, and no flight plan was filed for the local personal flight conducted under 14 CFR Part 91. According to a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) inspector, the pilot built the accident airplane over a period of approximately 10 years. The airplane was equipped with a converted 1983 General Motors Corporation Corvair automobile engine. The accident flight was the first flight in the airplane. During the initial climb, about 200 feet agl, the engine lost partial power. Specifically, the propeller rpm decreased from 3,200, to 2,300. The pilot was unable to maintain altitude, and the airplane struck trees in a residential area during a forced landing. The airplane subsequently came to rest inverted in the trees. Examination of the wreckage by the FAA inspector revealed approximately 2 gallons of fuel remaining in the airplane's 9-gallon header fuel tank. The inspector did not observe any contamination in the airplane's fuel or fuel filter. Mark Jones (N886MJ) Wales, WI Web site: www.flykr2s.com Mailto:flyk...@wi.rr.com

There was a plane crash here yesterday around 1pm about a mile from my home. The pilot was up and walking around when the emergency vehicles arrived onsite. He *was* taken to the hospital for a check but his name hasn't been released yet as far as I know. The tail number is: N250KB and the accident is, of course, under investigation. He had just taken off and landed about a half-mile from the departure end of the airport runway. I took some pictures this afternoon and there wasn't much evidence of a hard impact in the ground but the plane pretty much disintigrated except for the tail feathers. Jim Hayward Rapid City, SD
