KR> Young Eagles

2015-10-20 Thread Sid Wood
This past Saturday 10/17 I went to Chesapeake Ranch Estates, MD50, for their
Open House and Young Eagles Rally with EAA Chapter 478. I was scheduled to
work on the ground keeping paperwork straight and maybe marshal some
airplane parking. My KR-2 is still in Phase 1. We were short on pilots and
aircraft. I was asked to fly a spare airplane, a Cherokee 160, with 180 hp
engine. I had never rode in such a plane before then. In short order, I got
checked out and flew my first Young Eagles since 2012. The Chapter pilots
flew a total of 51 Young Eagles for their first airplane ride plus 6 adults
as well that day. Our Chapter total since the national inception by EAA in
1992 is 2208 Young Eagles flown. Don't know who enjoys this more, the
pilots or the Young Eagles. Thank you John Attebury for the gracious loan of
your Cherokee.

Rob,Good job on the young eagle's. We're supposed to have ninety kids this
Saturday. I don't think I'm going to be able to fly. The medical people at
the FAA are sitting on there asses playing the game. Who are we going to
*%/=! with this week.
I guess it's okay for me to drive thousands of gallons of hazardous
materials all over the country. But flying a little Cessna once a month is
totally out of the question. I don't get it.
Sorry about the rant guys. I'm not close of losing my medical. A lot of you
guys know how I feel about Young Eagles and it just hurts not being able to
fly.

Joe,

Congrats on the 10th anniversary! I'm not too far behind you at 8 1/2 years
and 670+ hours. Still having a ton of fun myself.

I put in 4.5 hours myself this last weekend. Flew Young Eagles an Saturday
and then did a breakfast run Sunday.

KR> Young Eagles Rally

2015-06-08 Thread Sid Wood
What to do when your EAA Chapter 478 has a Young Eagles Rally, your KR-2 is
still serving a Phase 1, 40-hour sentence, and the local FBO, that you
normally rent a C-150, just went out of business? Take off the upper cowl
and do a pre-flight show & tell briefing for the 155 kids signed up to fly
that morning at the Rally. I did 4 to 8 kids at a time so that the pilots
did not need to take the ten minutes or so to do the brief for each flight.
That really helped speed up air operations. Plus the kids were able to
actually see an aircraft engine. I only did the briefing 27 times.
We managed to fly 132 Young Eagles using 14 aircraft before thunder storms
shut us down. The other 23 got first debs for our First Responders Rally
for August.

I was told by our local EAA powers-that-be that flying Young Eagles in
experimental aircraft was frowned upon by just about everybody involved, EAA
at OSH included, although you may not find that in writing anywhere.  And
being afraid to leave my local treeline, I'm also reluctant to give myself

It's not 100% bogus.  if you are flying scouts,BSA guidelines will not allow
them to fly in experimentals.  As a scoutmaster, a pilot and one day completed
KR2S builder I have taken many young eagles flying.  just about all of our boys
have their aviation merit badges and it was clearly told to us by District that
only certificated planes could be used.
But other young eagles can fly in anything that actually flys.

That is a bogus report that seems to surface pretty regularly.  There is no
restriction on using an experimental aircraft for Young Eagles.

Reference
<http://www.youngeagles.org/volunteers/resources/content/YE%20Resource%20-%20EAA%20Young%20Eagle%20Pilot%20Guidelines.pdf>
or easier yet Google "Young Eagle Pilot Requirements".

The requirements sheet does state that your aircraft has to be in an airworthy
condition and have passenger liability insurance.  Those are the only
references to the aircraft itself.

It would be kind of ironic for the Experimental Aircraft Association to not
allow Experimental Aircraft.  However, that is not the case.

Yes, my KR has been used for Young Eagles.

2009-06-09 Thread Ed Janssen
Just a clarification for those suggesting that KR are not "certified"
aircraft - KR aircraft ARE "certified" aircraft, just as Pipers, Cessnas,
etc. are. KRs are just placed in a different "category" - the
"Experimental" Category with the purpose of "Operating Amateur-Built".
Pipers, Cessnas and the like are certified aircraft placed in the "Standard"
category. To generally imply that an experimental aircraft is necessarily
less safe than a standard category airplane would be irresponsible.

We fly lots of young eagles in experimentals. The boy scout troops
specifically have rules against it, so they fly in the certified
craft. I've never seen a KR used, but RVs, Glassirs, Lancair, our EAA
chapter president flys 'em in his Falco. We have an event this
weekend at the local airport as well.

Well Guys ,
I did something a little different this morning. I went to my
son's 5th grade class and did a little lecture on flying, building my own
airplane, and flying it. Then handed out Young Eagles schedule for our

I'm really pretty pleased at how well received I was and what I thought I
would have trouble talking for a half hour turned into an hour. I'm
pretty certain that I got to at least half of the 50 kids that were

Joe,
When I was in the third grade I had the privilege of hearing an Air
Force pilot come to our mixed Third/Fourth grade class and teach us
about aerodynamics. Even at that age, I understood the Bernoulli
principle and the principles of flight from the way in which he
presented it. Since then I have a keen interest in aviation. As a

visit and share your knowledge with students in school. It's the adult
