Not sure who these folks are but I must agree I would do the same thing. it
chaps my hide that a business, any business would treat it's customers that
way. I would still be in the business I am if acted like that for sure.

KR> CrankShaft

2009-05-15 Thread thomas brady

I would just like people to know my experience with Modley Crankshaft at
Dearborn Heights, MI. About 5 months ago I gave them a call about doing the
crankshaft work for my engine. I told them everything that I needed done and
they gave me a ballpark price. So I sent it off for them to complete the work.
During this time I made several calls to them to just make sure they did not
forget about me. Everytime I called I asked about the total price, but they
would never give me the total. Yesterday UPS tried to make the delivery but I
was not home. They did leave one of those stickys telling me that the next
delivery date would be Any ways on this sticky is were i found the total
price. There was a $325.00 difference from what the ballpark price was that
they gave me. So I just figured that it was just a missprint or something. But
when I called them I found out that it was the right price. Now what really
burns me is this. I would be fine if they just told me that they messed up and
gave me the wrong price, but No, the guy told me that I was lying and that he
would have never told me that ballpark price. I would have normally just went
ahead and payed it, figuring whats 325.00 in the total cost, but calling me a
liar is what got me. He did not even go ask if any of the other 2 people that
are there had said anything to me, just jumped right to calling me a liar. I'm
not here to bad mouth anyone or any busniess but I just wanted to let the group
know my experience with them. Oh, so I told him to keep the crankshaft. I'm now
looking for another crankshift.

KR> Crankshaft threading

2008-10-12 Thread Jack Cooper
Just wanted to let everyone know that it is not impossible to thread the crank
for the safety shaft after the crank has been nitrated. Mike Hyers recommended
a local machine shop which caters to industry, (not an automotive machine
shop). I told them that the crank had been nitrated but he was not concerned by
that as he would not be using a conventional tap. I do recommend that the crank
be threaded prior to nitrating as it can be done cheaper and easier but it is
not impossible to thread after nitrating.

2008-10-12 Thread Jack Cooper
Sent my crank to Nitron today. I called to let them know it was being shipped
and ask about wheather it should be turned proir to nitrating or turned after
nitrating. He said definately have the crank turned before nitrating. I know
that this was discussed at length a while back but I wanted to hear it from the
man who does the nitrating. I don't want to start this discussion all over
again but just passing along what I was told. I also sent along a prepaid
shipping label so that he can apply the label to my box and not worry about
return shipping cost. He also liked that idea.

Good to hear you are OK.
Was the crank a standard VW or forged or after market crank?

Joe,

Thanks. Do you have the one with the force one hub? Do you have a prop hub
extension? If so, how long is it? Have you contacted Steve about this yet?

I guess you can tell, I have gotten a little paranoid about engine failures.

Hi, all;
I have a 2" steel extension on my 1834cc Hapi. I feel I should have one
made of 2024 aluminum after reading about recent crank failures. Did
these incidents involve extensions, and if so, what material was used to
make them?

Any thoughts in regard to this will be appreciated.

appears to be damaged. This leads me to believe the there was a prop

KR> Crankshaft Nitriding

2008-10-12 Thread Mark Jones
I have quietly sat back and listened to all of you discuss this issue. No one
really knows why or how or anything else, except the facts we have now. Just
keep this in mind.It is your life that is in most danger coupled with any
passengers you may carry and then there are the people on the ground you could
take out if you go down. But what about your loved ones who are affected by
your loss, losses. You guys and gals are intelligent people. If you were not,
then you could not build an airplane. Why would any of you take such a risk?
Why would you not spend a few extra dollars to make your plane safer whether it
is a Piet or a high performance 250 mph plane. Why would you not spend a few
extra hours on the engine to make it more bullet proof? Those of you who are
taking this seriously and doing the nitriding as recommended, I applaud
you!!! Those who are ignoring the findings and are not concerned about
nitriding well, may God be with you!!! And please don't fly over my house,
at least while my family is at home. Kind of puts it in perspective doesn't it?
Personally, I love life and am enjoying doing what I love to do. When William
called and asked for my crank, I had no plans of nitriding. Thank God I let him
talk me into it since mine was cracked. And by the way, I flew gently those 71
hours and never turned it over 3150 rpm. Also, thanks to William asking for my
crank, I discovered a faulty harmonic balancer during the teardown which also
would have caused a forced landing. That's two things I am proud to say William
saved me from. Now, the next time I go fly, I will be just that much more
confident in my airplane as being that much safer.
