My favorite kind of flying. On the way to the KR Gathering in 2013, I was at a
GPS ALT of 14,000 and was splitting clouts like that. Awesome.

Here is a view out the window of the KR at 10K on the trip home yesterday. It
got much thicker at times. I had to zig zag back and forth across the magenta
line to stay VFR. Ended up with scattered rain showers within a few miles of
the airport but I was able to maintain VFR. I prefer CAVU.

Pretty much the same view coming home for me. I was flying around between the
tops at 10,500' west bound. Normal ops for this time of year. Super smooth
yesterday both directions and no haze. I sat there hands off all the way there
and all the way home.

I just returned from a 182 mile trip to visit family and be honored
with 4 of my brothers at a Salute to Veterans Day at the local Junior
High school. We spoke to 7 different classrooms of young students
and shared our military experiences.

Clear blue skies on the trip north with a 20 mph wind right on the
nose. I returned with a 25 mph wind right on the tail, not a bump in
the air, 100 mile visibility, and made the 182 mile trip in 1 hour
and 7 minutes. KR's are real traveling machines. By the way, my

stayed in Oregon. It's the worst time of year in SoCal, as those who
attended last year's Gathering will know.

So cool and beautiful up there. So dry and hot down here. It's "Santa

I want to move to Oregon.

Your trip diagram on the map looks like a redbirds head looking to the left,
heehee

Curious about the Lowrance 2000C GPS  you have. I remember when those came out.
I thought they were the best handheld available at the time for the money. Do
you think you might be able to update the charts software in it through another
software developer like Seattle Avionics, Jeppeson or whomever since Lowrance
may not or does not have update software available? I know several people who
still use their Lowrance 2000 gps whether black & white or color.
I purchased a BendixKing AV80R Ace at Oshkosh this year. It started out as a
$2,000.00 unit then dropped to around $1,200.00 then at Oshkosh, King decided
to drop the price to around $300.00. This unit has a split screen capablity,
Traffic, weather capability, XM or ADSB plug or WiFi. An amazing unit
considering the price. There may still be some available I have no idea. The
yearly cost to update the software is $47.00 dollars I think and I believe it
is certified to carry all needed charts, VFR and IFR. When I am on my computer
I get notifications from the software on my computer that updates are available
that it downloads for me automatically. I insert the SD card out of the AV80R
ACE into my laptop and it downloads the updates while I do other things. Very
convenient, plus it tells me when to update. They may all be like this now for
all I know.
The bottom line is Bendix King had orginally had an agreement with Jeppeson to
load all the charts on the AV80R ACEs and Jeppeson is what was on my GPS when I
bought it this summer but then BendixKing changed over to Seattle Avionics as
their charts supplier for the unit. This is why I ask if someone else maybe has
the ability to update the Lowrance series. Just a thought Jeff, thanks for the
trip report.

One more question, with your Continental 0200 engine, what is your maximum
altitude capability or do you know? and what is your typical cruise speed and
fuel burn?

For the last several years, I have been flying with a Lowrance 2000c gps.  Nice
function.  Intuitive application.  Overall the nicest GPS I've ever used.
However, when the economy went south, Lowrance chose to abandon the struggling
aviation market for greener pastures and orphaned the Lowrance Aviation GPS
line, leaving me with no support for updates.  Now that my database had
exceeded 2 years out of date, I felt compelled to replace the unit.

After a great deal of study, this spring I bought the iFly 720 unit.  I was
really interested in the iPads, but found that the size of the iPad simply was
not compatible with the cockpit spaces to use in both the KR and the SuperCub.
So, I decided on the iFly unit.  Shortly after I bought the GPS, I saw that
SkyRadar was selling an ADSB weather receiver that would talk to it via WiFi,
making both easily portable between my two planes.

I have done a bit of local flying with the units, but had not been more than
150 miles from home with them yet, so hadn't really depended on them working
properly for some serious cross country flying.  The last two weeks was an
opportunity to really exercise and learn the systems as I flew from NM, to MN,
to IA, to TN, to various destinations around TN, VA, NC and SC, then back
across GE, AL, MS, AR, OK, TX and NM.

Technical Issues:
Ever since I bought these units, about 35 percent of the time, the ADSB
receiver simply never showed up on the GPS.  That trend continued on this
flight, but was finally resolved two days ago.  I found that upon boot up,
sometimes the WiFi connection between the two devices simply failed to
establish itself.  This was noted by selecting weather mode and finding it
labeled "Pre-Flight Weather".  I found that on boot up, it was best if I
brought up the aviation GPS application, then put it in the background and went
back to setup for the WiFi and made sure it established the WiFi connection.
Once this was done, the connection was reliable.  This could also have been
resolved by buying the USB cable to connect the SkyRadar unit directly to the
GPS, which is how it is used with the iFly 700 unit.  When I was preparing to
leave Greenville, SC under low ceilings, the ADSB weather came on line as soon
as I booted the system.  When I went to taxi out, I found that I had left the
chocks under the wheels so had to shut down to unchock the plane.  When I
booted it back up again, all I could get was "Pre-Flight Weather", which is
what I finally figured out that day meant, the WiFi connection had failed to
connect.

OK, technical issues aside and now resolved, the ADSB weather is really nice to
have in the cockpit, but does have some limitations.  In weather mode, you do
get NexRad radar images overlaid on the GPS moving map.  It is not a nationwide
image.  There is an oval shaped circle showing the coverage area you are
receiving with a time stamp on it telling you how many minutes old the data you
are seeing is.  The oval is typcally around 200 - 300 miles by up to 400 miles
in size for the NexRad radar coverage.  Only once during this trip was I
dodging rain showers where the NexRad radar would have been very useful, but on
that leg of the trip, the WiFi connection had failed and I hadn't discovered
yet why the SkyRAdar was failing to connect.  The rest of the time my issue was
with low ceilings and winds.

The airport information from ADSB Weather is really nice to have.  In weather
mode, every airport with an AWOS or ASOS system gets a color depiction showing
whether it is VFR, MVFR, or IFR.  Each airport on the map also has a wind

30.9 hours.  That includes all the taxiing around and all the time spent on the
ground when the master switch is on.  For actual flight time, I should have
used the Tach, but didn't record it before I left.  I would estimate 28.9
actual flight hours based on my fuel burn.  All told, I burned 158.9 gallons of
fuel at a cost of $861.62 for an average price of $5.42/gal and an average
mileage of 26.1 mpg.

I've got an iFly 720 GPS and a SkyRadar ADSB weather receiver.  If there is any
interest, I'll be happy to write a summary about flying most of the country and
what I learned about flying with ADSB weather and specifically, some of the
issues I ran into with my iFly and SkyRadar ADSB receiver.

I spent about 3 hours at Hendersonville, so walked through the museum and along
the north side.  I spoke to a number of pilots along the north side and saw 2
Mustang IIs there, so undoubtedly one of them was your fathers.

Awesome trip report, Jeff! I'm envious. We truly are flying personal
time machines. I've been hoping for a trip out west for years now, but it
looks like it'll be a little further away for me.

I have an iFly 720 as well, and would be very interested to hear your ADSB
lessons learned. I'm a bit on the fence about buying the SkyRadar unit, or
waiting a while for the next generation. I'm sure you could shed some light
on that. It'll be a few more weeks before I get back in the air again, but
I'm steadily working toward that.

KR> Trip Report

2012-10-10 Thread Jeff Scott
Often times builders will post about the lack of KR flying stories.  I just
completed what seems like an epic journey over the last 11 days, so thought I
would post a log from the adventure.  The weather kept me from flying to the KR
Gathering as that was planned to be the front end of a 2 week vacation.

I finally left Los Alamos, NM on Saturday morning with a new destination of
Lake Elmo Airport just outside of St Paul, MN.  The first leg took me north
east out of Los Alamos and up over the mountains and fog near Angel Fire, NM,
cruising at 11,500'.  Once I was east of the mountains, I found the usual
eastern slope fog covering eastern Colorado and into Kansas.  I flew northward
along the eastern slope of the Rockies finally stopping for fuel and a weather
check in Akron, CO up near the Wyoming border.  The fog extended about 100
miles to the east, but after that was clear, so I launched again from Akron out
across Nebraska towards my next fuel stop in Norfolk, NE.  Made a quick turn
around in Norfolk, then was off to Lake Elmo, where I spent a couple of days
visiting family.  Total of 7.3 hours logged on the hobbs for the day.

Monday morning I launched from Lake Elmo, MN and flew to Centerville, IA where
I was able to refuel with Mogas.  I visited more family there, then flew to
another town nearby to see more family and friends.

After two more days of catching up with family and friends, I launched for
Jackson, TN with an intermediate fuel stop for more Mogas in Mexico, MO.  3.4
hours later, I got to spend the day with fellow KR Builder Steve Bray and his
lovely wife.   The following day I flew over to Greeneville, TN to visit with a
fellow Cub owner.  We decided to do a bit more flying, and since we were in the
area of Hemsley Air Park, we were going to just buzz the air park.  Someone
that sounded a great deal like KR Builder Jack Cooper came on the radio at
Hensley to give us winds.  When I asked if it was Jack, the man on the radio
answered yes and invited me to land.  Hensley was an interesting landing.
Approach down over a hill, drop the plane in and stand on the brakes.  For some
reason, I had it in my head that Hensley had 4000' of runway.  The reality is
that it is only 3000', which made my slightly fast landing into a real brake
heating tire chirping event that used up every bit of the runway.  When I
taxied over to visit Jack, I found that it wasn't the Jack I knew.  The fellow
said there are three Jacks at Hensley, so he called Jack Cooper who came over
to visit for a bit until the hangar owner's wife where we were visiting shooed
us out.  I was supposed to come back to Hensley and spend an evening with Jack,
but cancelled the next morning after checking weather.  The weather was good
for that day, but it looked like if I came back for the night, Jack might end
up with a house guest for a few days longer than expected.

I spent the next day visiting numerous airports around the Western VA, Western
NC and SC areas, ending up in Greenville, SC, where I did get weathered in at
my brother's place.

Finally, yesterday afternoon the weather in Greenville and along my flight path
cleared enough that I could get away.  I left Greenville, SC and made a fuel
stop in Hamilton, AL before arriving at my next destination in Hope, AR where I
was to meet up with my wife at her parents place so we could celebrate our 30th
anniversary.  This morning I left for home making two more fuel stops in
Hinton, OK and Dalhart, TX before arriving back home in Los Alamos.

I tried to get together to spend some time with Dan Heath and Mark Langford.  I
also wanted to spend a bit more time with Jack Cooper. The weather fouled those
plans.  But otherwise I was able to accomplish all of my goals for this trip.

It's really good for me to get out and travel in the KR.  I am always awe
struck by how quickly I can move around the country when the weather
cooperates.  Yesterday afternoon I was sitting on the ground in Greenville, SC
waiting on weather.  This afternoon, I home in Los Alamos, NM.  That's some
serious travel capability.

All told, I made stops in:
Los Alamos, NM
Akron, CO
Norfolk, NE
Lake Elmo, MN,
Centerville, IA
Albia, IA
Mexico, MO
Jackson, TN
Greenville, TN
Hensley Air Park, TN

Mountain City, TN

Hillsville, VA
Greenville, SC
Hendersonville, NC

Facts and figures.  The SkyVector flight planner says I flew nautical
miles.  Of course that doesn't include flying patterns in and out of the
airports or the horsing around and diversions that I did. I would round that up
to roughly 3600 nautical miles or 4150 statute miles.  The hobbs meter recorded
30.9 hours.  That includes all the taxiing around and all the time spent on the
ground when the master switch is on.  For actual flight time, I should have

2009-09-22 Thread laser...@juno.com
After leaving MVN for Naples, Fl on Saturday, I had an exhaust valve spring
break (#4) and had to set it down in Venice, Fl. It was dark by then and the
next day was Sunday so didn't get anything done until Monday morning, chasing
tools & parts. Finished the job this morning (Tuesday) and am now in Naples
for the night. Off to Jacksonville in the morning.
Flying through that mess to the south leaving MVN, it looks like I've really
done some damage to my Prince. It was supposed to have leading edge protection
but if it did, it sure didn't work. Rain was intermittent so I don't know why
the outside leading edges are so trashed now. It will need to be sent back to
Lonnie to be refinished once I get home.

I learned something interesting about oil, a recent subject on the forum. (I
haven't read any of the posts in a week and probably won't until I get back to
SD). What I learned is that synthetic does not suspend lead. When travelling,
like now, I'm using all avgas and normal oil is a lot better for the valves,
guides & seats than synthetc (when using avgas). So no more synthetic oil for
me One of the mechanics I was talking to in Venice (Southwest Avionics) gave
me this info - he was involved with Katana Rotaxs' when they first came out and
they had huge valve problems using avgas with synthetic oils.. It's funny I
never came across this information until now, but Steve agrees his is true.

Here are some tenative plans. If thigs work out I hope to be flying north to
Fargo for the Mini Corvair college the begins on the 25th of May. I should
leave out of here on the 21st and visit some Peitenpol guys in Atlanta, then
the 26 to Tennessee area, then Casey IL to work on Cleone Markwell's 601 - hope
to get it flying - then onto Fargo. On the way back I will be stopping in
Pittsburg Kansas to help a guy get KR current. Then a visit to my folks in
Mountain View Missouri and then home by the 30th. If I can stop by or you need
a quick inspection or a KR ride ( for those who are about ready and will fit in
mine) go ahead and ask. I should have some corvair manuals and maybe some
cool products with me. This is a working trip for me - not pro bono - but I do
want to stop and see you guys that I can along the way. As I firm up plans
and if the weather cooperates Ill let you know more.
I went out flying on Thursday for about and hour or so - about the only
smoke free day weve had here in a while. Please pray for rain in our area. It
is dangerous and people have dies here due to the fires and smoke.

KR> Trip and check a project

2008-10-12 Thread Joseph H. Horton
Guys,
I can mix this up a little . Yesterday I took a little trip to
central Pa. to meet KR builder Randy Smyre. It was a short 40 min flight
to SEG in some of the most beautiful weather of the year. There was no
wind aloft as the GPS indicated 173 mph ground speed at both 4500 and
5500 ft 2 hours apart. And yes the engine is still running near perfect.
I meet Randy at the airport and he spent about a half hour
crawling and walking around 357CJ taking in everything that he could. He
sat in the plane to get a feel for it (I was sorry that I was not
comfortable to offer a ride yet) After that we hoped in his car and made
the 20 min drive to his house where he has what I feel is a very near
complete KR2S that he has built from scratch. The workmanship looks good
and with some encouragement from the group I bet he could be ready in a
year. Engine is his last major task to really get into. But he has much
of the stuff on hand to get into that also. He has widened the fuselage
at the shoulders and is working on installing a Todd's canopy. He has
made split flaps and installed wing tanks like Bill Clapp's. It is a tail
dragger with Tracy O'Brian wheels and brakes. Besides engine and cowl the
biggest thing that he has to tackle is all that wonderful sanding. (he he
heee! good luck)
Randy is planning on attending the gathering again this year so
stoke him up for the race to the finish line.
When I was about ready to leave SEG Randy was talking to a Gruman pilot
that had just stopped in. He said my KR looks fast just sitting there.
Naw - I didn't just swell up with pride as I went on to say yep 173 true.
(he said wow best I can get out of his is 125 flat out)
I'd love to visit some other guys in the area actually anyone
with in 200 miles of Allentown Pa. I could do in a morning trip. Send me
a e-mail off the list and I'll get together with you

flying with Dan and Gus. We tore up the skies pretty good but Dan was "over
the
top". His experience allows him to do more than I am comfortable with as of
yet. - Good thing those who were upset about my flyby at Mark Jones' place
weren't there. We simply had FUN! YYHHAAA!

Second - when I got home I found I had recieved a complementary issue of
SPORTMAN PILOT magazine. The editor/owner of this magazine is Jack Cox who
was the editor for EAA Sport Aviation for many years. I had met him at Sun N
Fun 04 but did not know who he was. Inside the magazine was a very nice
three page spread on N41768. It was a humbling experience but a thrill at
the
same time to see your plane in a magazine. I think Ill get a couple more
copies to save. Thank you Jack.

Third - Elaine and I left out of Valdosta and flew to Edgewater FL and
met up with Glenda McElwee for a trip out to the Bahamas for the weekend.
Glenda had reserved a motel and had invited us with. We flew a rented 172 out
to the Bahamas and had a real fun time. This trip was more a learning
experience for me than anything else. Now that I know the paperwork and
flight
procedures I will be able to fly there more in the future with the KR. I do
have
to equip the KR a little better before I can so the flight but it will be a
comfortable trip to make. Elaine had a lot of fun out there as well. After
spending the week at the Corvair College I owed her a little "daddy time" and
I believe it was time well spend. Thank you Glenda for the experience and
what I learned.
Dont worry too much Mark L...Not having flown a 172 since 1993 I
made two misserable landings and one fair landing - even Elaine complained
about them. I wasnt ready to have time to cook an omelete on final

300 hours and counting...

NetHeads,

The guys on CorvAircraft enjoyed this, so maybe y'all will too. I flew down to
my father's farm last weekend. Details are at
http://home.hiwaay.net/~langford/firstfarmtrip/ . I actually hollered
"YEHA!" while rolling out. Down on the farm seemed like the
perfect place!

I'll be in traveling on business for the next three weeks, so you won't be
hearing much in the way of progress reports from me. I'm trying to keep it
light, since there are four of us traveling in one car (and an internet
connection costs a fortune in European hotels), so I'm not carrying the laptop.
 See y'all later...
