[libreoffice-l10n] Implementing "translation in context"
Hi, I have implemented what I call "translation in context" in this application: - http://v.btranslator.org/ - http://v.btranslator.org?proj=ICT_de&lng=de - http://v.btranslator.org?proj=ICT_fr&lng=fr - http://v.btranslator.org?proj=ICT_it&lng=it It works like this: when the user makes a Ctrl+Click on a string/translation anywhere on the UI, a browser tab/window is opened automatically with the correct url in the translation server (web application), where he can give a translation or a new suggestion for the selected string. Of course, for a normal Click the UI works as normally it should. The funny thing is that this is a mobile application and in a mobile application you cannot make a Ctrl+Click. But for translation purposes it can be opened in a desktop browser. Anyway, it serves to illustrate/demonstrate the idea of "translation in context" (or whatever it can be called). The implementation details are not so complicated. This app uses a gettext-like localization system, where there is a JavaScript function `_()` that is used to mark the strings that need to be translated, like this: _("string") it returns the corresponding "translation", which is then used in the application. I have overridden the function `_()` so that it does not return just the plain "translation", but it returns instead a decorated translation like this: translation See: https://github.com/FreeSoft-AL/vocabulary/blob/gh-pages/js/_app/translate_in_context.js#L43-L54 Then I assign with jQuery an event-handler for the event Ctrl+Click to all the elements of the class "gettext". This event handler gets the id of the string and opens in a tab the proper URL for translating that string in the translation server. See: https://github.com/FreeSoft-AL/vocabulary/blob/gh-pages/js/_app/translate_in_context.js#L82-L98 My question is: Is it possible to implement something like this for LibreOffice? I think that it would be a great feature for improving the quality of translations and for helping users to give feedback and suggestions to the translators. I believe that it should be possible, but I don't know the details of the translation system in LibreOffice. The most difficult part in my opinion is how to mark (or decorate) the translated string, so that it can respond to a Ctrl+Click event. Then you can construct the correct url and open it in browser. It can be designed to work with B-Translator, or Pootle, or some other online translation system. But maybe it can also work with local desktop applications like Virtaal, Lokalize, etc. It seems to me like an interesting and important project, which may also turn out to be not so difficult to implement. [libreoffice-l10n] The removing German names in the code
Hi all, I have started my work with documentation. I am trying to select information about Calc functions. And I think that writing a script is good idea for it. And I have started it. But I have noticed that names and descriptions of functions do not have a common part in macros name. For example: the function RAND. for its name: SC_OPCODE_RANDOM for its description: SC_HID_FUNC_ZUFALLSZAHL It would be convenient to substitute the German name SC_HID_FUNC_ZUFALLSZAHL with English SC_HID_FUNC_RANDOM. But I see that SC_HID_FUNC_ZUFALLSZAHL is used in HELP ( helpcontent2/helpers/help_hid.lst and helpcontent2/source/text/scalc/01/04060106.xhp). Should I substitute ZUFALLSZAHL to RANDOM in files of Help too? What should I do with files of l10n? Will they be assembled automatically or I should change names there as well? Re: [libreoffice-l10n] The removing German names in the code
Please do not touch that. By changing those names you touch the translatable strings (both function names and the help strings using it) - and make them untranslated (actually probably fuzzy) in about 130 languages! Please spare about 130 translation teams of this Sysyphus work. Lp, m. 2015-09-10 14:25 GMT+02:00 Lera : > Hi all, > > I have started my work with documentation. Re: [libreoffice-l10n] The removing German names in the code
I do not really understand some translators insistence on touching anything, ever. Yes translation is hard, but so is any other part of the development. Are you suggesting that everything is kept frozen for ever because it affects “about 130 languages”! This is becoming really absurd. Khaled, beautifyng code and with that making work for volunteer localizers is really questionable. There is something called comments in code that is just perfect for such situations. Please revise all my posts to all Ooo and LO mailing lists in the past what 15 years - I am not against development, but adamnantly oppose lartpourlartistic changes that cause a myriad of work to l10n teams. Three people are trying to make the comparison table for Calc and Excel function for a long time already. Besides this will simplify any automation that may be required in the future. If I do not make these changes, a man who decides to do some automation for our documentation team would have to do the same research again, as well as a person who would want to take part in the development of help. (Maybe therefore, our help has got outdated so much.) Not to speak of the fact that it's simply not professional. Additionally, some function description is not correct, some is identical, but should be different. Maybe we don't make any changes in it, because people in 130 languages have to translate again. What sense does it make? Let everything be as before, so everyone would work as less as possible? PS: I do not say that some developers have to do it. I can do it myself. I would like only to get some explanations. But if everybody does not agree, I can leave it without the proposed changes and finish the script in another way.
