[libreoffice-l10n] REMINDER: Release 4.1.0.1 from libreoffice-4-1 branch (Hard English string UI freeze)

Hi,

please note that the commit deadline for 4.1.0.1, aka rc1, is on
Monday, June 17, 2013. It is also the day for the hard English sting
and UI freeze.

IMPORTANT: we are reaching the final phase, so all changes in the 4-1
branch will need one review after the rc1 deadline. By other words, the
reviewing requirement starts on Tuesday, June 18, 2013.

Note that there are planned two more release candidates with deadlines
on July 1, and 15, 2013.

[libreoffice-l10n] [ANNOUNCE] Branch libreoffice-4-1 created

as promised, we have created a branch for the stabilization of the
4.1.x releases, called 'libreoffice-4-1'. It is based on master, last
pull on May 21, 2013 at about 10am UTC:

Little cleanup in image loader internal functions

The following rules apply:

+ only bugfixes are allowed
+ no approval needed during beta phase until June 17, 2013
+ 1 approval needed during rc phase and upcoming bug fix releases
+ 3 approvals with different/no affiliation needed for late
  features

IMPORTANT: Every developer is responsible for pushing fixes into all
   appropriate branches. Note that we do not plan any merge
   from this branch to master or vice versa.

   Please, help use to make stable and usable 4.1.0 release.
   Do not forget to push useful fixes to this branch.

   git cherry-pick commit-id is your friend :-)
 


The 'master' branch is used for 4.2 development and has the rules:

+ free commit; do your best to do not break build and
  functionality
+ any development allowed

git config --global push.default tracking

When you do git push with this, git will push only the branch you are
on; ie. libreoffice-4-1 when you have switched to it.  This will
save you some git shouting at you.

[libreoffice-l10n] REMINDER: 4.1 feature freeze and 4.1.0.0.beta1 release

Hi,

please note that the feature freeze and commit deadline for 4.1.0.0.beta1
is today, May 20, 2013.

The plan is to create the libreoffice-4-1 branch on Tuesday. Then we
will make sure that it is buildable and usable and create the beta1 tag
on that branch. It will hopefully happen on Tuesday.

Please, let me know if you are late with a feature. It is possible to
wait few hours or one day.

Please, do not commit too incomplete or broken stuff that could make
beta1 unusable. We need to have it in a good state for testing.
Note that there is still possibility to add late features with 3
approvals from people with different affiliation.

The branch will be announced on the mailing list and in the irc
#libreoffice-dev channel title. Once we have the branch, please cherry
pick useful fixes from master there. We do not plan to merge between
the branches. So, we kindly ask everyone to keep master and the branch
in sync.

+ no regular merges back to anything

I am not sure if I understand it correctly. Do you suggest that if you
translated a string in the 4.0 branch, it should add the same
translation to the 3.6 branch and vice versa?

Such thing would make sense. I am not sure if pootle do this
automatically or if Andras does some hackery when synchronizing pootle
and git sources.

please note that the commit deadline for 4.0.1.2, aka rc2, is
already on Monday, February 25, 2013. It will be used as LO-4.0.1
final if no blocker is reported.

IMPORTANT: There are not two weeks between rc1 and rc2 this time. It is
another side effect of the late schedule change when we used two weeks
between 4.0.0 betas and RCs. We were not able to shift the feature
freeze and final release.

This should be the last anomality. There should be always two weeks
between all betas and rcs from now on,

Hi Tom,

good question. The announce might be a bit misleading for translators
because it primary describes code change handling. The workflow for
translations is much easier.

Translators primary works with pootle and do not need to mind about the
source code branches. The last translations from pootle are always
committed in the right source branch by Andras Timar before each
release/tag.

Note that 4.0.X are bug fix releases. There should not be new
strings[*]. So, one branch for 4.0 release is enough in pootle.

[*] A string might be modified even after the string freeze if it is
needed to fix a serious bug. In this case, the original English string
is updated in pootle by Andras, the related translations become fuzzy
and should get translated in Pootle before next release/tag.

I hope that it is more clear now. Maybe, I should not send these
announcements to the l10n list. It was meant as a head up to make people
aware about the tag. It means that all further changes will in the next
build :-)

PS: Please, help with reviewing pending commits.

[*] This is a special case. QA suggested to have two weeks between 4.0.0
betas and rcs. I modified the schedule in October but it was too late to
change the feature freeze. We also could not shift the final release
date because it is synced some distro releases. The result is that 4.0.0
release is not ideal. There is only one week between rc2 and rc3 and
there is no time to do 3.6.5.2 in between. If we need 3.6.5.2 in the
end, it has to be done after 4.0.0.3 and thus 3 weeks after rc1. It is
pretty long delay and we would like to avoid it :-)

Note that the schedule for 4.1.0 and 4.2.0 release are better interlaced
with the other bugfix releases.

Note that there are planned two more release candidates with deadlines

as promised, we have created a branch for the stabilization of the
4.0.x releases, called 'libreoffice-4-0'. It is based on master, last
pull on Decemebr 4, 2012 at about 16pm UTC. See also the tag
libreoffice-4-0-branch-point.

The following rules apply:

+ only bugfixes are allowed
+ no approval needed during beta phase until January 7, 2013
+ 1 approval needed during rc phase and upcoming bug fix releases
+ 3 approvals with different/no affiliation needed for late
  features

IMPORTANT: Every developer is responsible for pushing fixes into all
   appropriate branches. Note that we do not plan any merge
   from this branch to master or vice versa.

   Please, help use to make stable and usable 4.0.0 release.
   Do not forget to push useful fixes to this branch.

   git cherry-pick commit-id is your friend :-)
 


The 'master' branch is used for 4.1 development and has the rules:

+ free commit; do your best to do not break build and
  functionality
+ any development allowed

Hi,

please note that the feature freeze and commit deadline for 4.0.0.0.beta1
is today, December 3, 2012.

The plan is to create the libreoffice-4-0 branch on Tuesday. Then we
will make sure that it is buildable and usable and create the beta1 tag
on that branch. It will hopefully happen on Tuesday.

Please, let me know if you are late with a feature. It is possible to
wait few hours or one day.

Please, do not commit too incomplete or broken stuff that could make
beta1 unusable. We need to have it in a good state for testing.
Note that there is still possibility to add late features with 3
approvals from people with different affiliation.

The branch will be announced on the mailing list and in the irc
#libreoffice-dev channel title. Once we have the branch, please cherry
pick useful fixes from master there. We do not plan to merge between
the branches. So, we kindly ask everyone to keep master and the branch
in sync.

for the upcoming new version 3.6.4, the RC1 builds now start to be
available on pre-releases. This build is slated to be first release
candidate build on the way towards 3.6.4, please refer to our release

Builds are now being uploaded to a public (but non-mirrored - so don't
spread news too widely!) place, as soon as they're available. Grab

bugs not yet in bugzilla here, so we can incorporate them into the
release notes. Please note that it takes approximately 24 hours to
populate the mirrors, so that's about the time we have to collect
feedback.

NOTE: This build is in a release configuration and _will_ replace your
existing LibreOffice install on Windows.

[libreoffice-l10n] [ANN] LibreOffice 3.6.1.1 test builds available

Hi *,

for the upcoming new version 3.6.1, the RC1 builds now start to be
available on pre-releases. This build is slated to be first release
candidate build on the way towards 3.6.0, please refer to our release
plan timings here:

Builds are now being uploaded to a public (but non-mirrored - so don't
spread news too widely!) place, as soon as they're available. Grab
them here:

 http://dev-builds.libreoffice.org/pre-releases/

If you've a bit of time, please give them a try  report *critical*
bugs not yet in bugzilla here, so we can incorporate them into the
release notes. Please note that it takes approximately 24 hours to
populate the mirrors, so that's about the time we have to collect
feedback.

NOTE: This build is in a release configuration and _will_ replace your
existing LibreOffice install on Windows.

[libreoffice-l10n] [ANNOUNCE] Branch libreoffice-3-6-1 created

Hi all,

there have been created the libreoffice-3-6-1 branch. It will be used
for fine tuning of the 3.6.1 release.

The following rules apply:

+ preferably just translation or blocker fixes
+ only cherry-picking from libreoffice-3-6 branch
+ 2 additional reviews needed; 2nd reviewer pushes
+ no regular merges back to anything

The 'libreoffice-3-6' branch is still active and will be used for the
3.6.2 bugfix release. Please read more at

Now, if you want to switch your clone to the branch, please do:

./g pull -r

do (if you haven't done it yet):

git config --global push.default tracking

When you do git push with this, git will push only the branch you are
on; e.g. libreoffice-3-6-1 when you have switched to it.  This will
save you some git shouting at you.

Hi,

please note that the commit deadline for 3.6.0-beta2 is today (Monday),
June 19, 2012.

NOTE: We are starting to use new version scheme:

+ 3.6.0.0.alphaXfor Xth alpha release
+ 3.6.0.0.betaX for Xth beta release
+ 3.6.0.X for   Xth release candidate

Advantages:

+ easy to understand for normal users, alpha, beta flags are known
  from other projects, so they set reasonable expectations
+ correct alphabetical sorting in RPM, bugzilla
+ easy to parse (alpha/beta strings delimited by dot)

The result is that we could have the same version everywhere: git tags,
source tarballs, about dialog, bugzilla, ...

IMPORTANT: This is final decision. Please, do not start another tread.
There already was long discussion until we got into these conclusion. See

[libreoffice-l10n] REMINDER: 3.6 feature freeze and 3.6.0-beta1 release

Hi,

please note that the feature freeze and commit deadline for 3.6.0-beta1
is today, July 4, 2012.

The plan is to create the libreoffice-3-6 branch on Tuesday. Then we
will make sure that it is buildable and usable and create the beta1 tag
on that branch. It will hopefully happen on Tuesday.

Please, let me know if you are late with a feature. It is possible to
wait few hours or one day.

Please, do not commit too incomplete or broken stuff. beta1 need to be
usable for testing. Note that there is still possibility to add late
features with 3 approvals from people with different affiliation.

The branch will be announced on the mailling list and in the irc
#libreoffice-dev channel title. Once we have the branch, please cherry
pick useful fixes from master there. We do not plan to merge between
the branches. So, we kindly ask everyone to keep master and the branch
in sync.

the Spanish File/Open menu. The shortcuts work as expected. I am not
happy with the bug but it should not block the release.

Andras found that the regression is most likely caused by the fix:

Why could it cause bad image? IMHO, it was bug on the Secunia side and
it is fixed now. We used this version scheme also for LO-3.4 and nobody
complained.

 a small number change, I think it would be worth the effort :)

It looks trivial but it is not. We would need to do clean build for all
systems, upload them to mirrors, restart smoketests, ... So, this change
would delay the release by many days.

Also, it is potentially dangerous. The version is defined and used on
many locations. Any change could cause strange side effects. Also there
are many scripts around that depends on a certain version scheme. So, we
should not change this between rc2 and rc3 if there is not a big reason.

Well, I agree that 3.5.0.202 is ugly. We are discussion to use the more
reasonable version scheme 3.5.2.2 now, see

If it goes well, we might try it for 3.5.3 release.

we postpone the commit deadline for 3.4.6-rc1 by one day. Please,
commit/nominate all fixes until tomorrow, February 6, 2012.

The branch libreoffice-3-4-6 and the tag will be created the day after. Only
commits with 3 reviewers will be allowed for that branch.

The delay is caused by the problems with 3.5.1-rc2 release. We did this
tag today and the release build machines are busy now.

Hi all,

there have been created the libreoffice-3-5-1 branch. It will be used
for fine tuning of the 3.5.1 release.

It was created before the tag for 3.5.1-rc1 to avoid race condition in
the automatically generated bugzilla comments.

It was created already on Wednesday evening. I did not announce it
because the 3 reviews were not needed before the tag for rc1. I just
cherry picked all fixes from 3-5 branch. The cherry picking should not
be needed in a normal case. I plan to create the branch and tag at the
same time (within one hour). This time I was too fast with creating the
branch and did not wait for one build fix that was more complicated
than expected. I am sorry for potential confusion.


The following rules apply:

+ preferably just translation or blocker fixes
+ only cherry-picking from libreoffice-3-5 branch
+ 2 additional reviews needed; 2nd reviewer pushes

I have just created the tag for beta3. Please, do not longer modify

 be for rc1, just one week later, on Monday, January 16, 2011.

There are still many bugfixes coming. Developers behave responsibly and
do not create serious regression in last betas. Let's postpone the need
for commit review in the libreoffice-3-5 branch by one week and allow
commits without review until the following Monday, January 16, 2012.

Of course, if you are not sure about a fix, you could always ask for
review on libreoff...@lists.freedesktop.org.

PS: The original hard string freeze was before Christmas. There was not
enough time to fix bugs in the strings, e.g. add help for the online
update functionality. So, we shifted the deadline to beta3.

IMHO, it was worth doing. There have been only few strings modified so
far, so it should not cause big harm to translators.

Also note that .0 release will be distributed with a warning that it
might include annoying bugs. People, who want well stable release would
need to wait for a later bug fix release. So, it is fine to have few
non-translated strings there.

Hi all,

as promised, we have created a branch for the stabilization of the
3.5.x releases, called 'libreoffice-3-5'. It is based on master, last
pull on December 6, 2011 at about 13pm UTC. See also the tag
libreoffice-3-5-branch-point.

The following rules apply:

+ only bugfixes are allowed
+ no approval needed during beta phase until Jan 9, 2012
+ 1 approval needed during rc phase and upcoming bug fix releases
+ 2 approvals with different/no affiliation needed for late
  features

IMPORTANT: Every developer is responsible for pushing fixes into all
   appropriate branches. Note that we do not plan any merge
   from this branch to master or vice versa.

   Please, help use to make stable and usable 3.5 release.
   Do not forget to push useful fixes to this branch.

   git cherry-pick commit-id is your friend :-)
 


The 'master' branch is used for 3.6 development and has the rules:

+ free commit; do your best to do not break build and
  functionality
+ any development allowed

  It is in a bit of a state it seems :-) anyhow - lots of bugs in our
  release process found/fixed before B1 which is good. I wonder how widely
  we should be announcing B0 - in the state that is in though.
 
 I agree with that. It's great to have the possibility to do some rough 
 tests right now, so that we can be sure that, when the wide public wants 
 to start testing, they actually are able to start :-)
 
 But since we are still not at feature-freeze, and there are chunks of
 things that need to go in yet that may de-stabilise, I start becoming a 
 bit reluctant in already announcing a big bug-hunting party for the 
 beta1 and thinking about beta2, due December 23 ..

I would decide about the bug-hunting party when we have, the feature
complete, beta1 in hands and see how it looks like. You could organize
it for the weekend Dec 17-18. I think that Dec 23 is not a good choice
because it is just one day before Christmas :-)

[libreoffice-l10n] REMINDER: 3.5 feature freeze and 3.5.0-beta1 release

Hi,

please note that the feature freeze and commit deadline for 3.5.0-beta1
is this Monday, December 5, 2011.

The plan is to create the libreoffice-3-5 branch on Monday evening or
Tuesday morning. Then we will make sure that it is buildable and usable
and create the beta1 tag on that branch. It will hopefully happen on
Tuesday.

The branch will be announced on the mailling list and in the irc
#libreoffice-dev channel title. Once we have the branch, please cherry
pick useful fixes from master there. We do not plan to merge between
the branches this time. So, we kindly ask everyone to keep master and
the branch in sync.

Hi,

please note that the commit deadline for 3.5.0-beta0 is on Monday,
November 28, 2011.

The main purpose of this build is to make sure that we are able to
produce usable builds in release configuration.

Please, do you best to keep master buildable and usable. Note that the
feature freeze and the commit deadline for beta1 is just one week later
on December 5, 2011.

I am a bit mixed. Did it work in 3.4.3? Was it broken in an earlier

It sounds strange if it worked in 3.4.3, was broken in older versions
and got broken again in 3.4.4.

there have been created the libreoffice-3-4-3 branch. It will be used for fine
tuning of the 3.4.3 bugfix release. It is based on the tag
libreoffice-3.4.3.1 for 3.4.3-rc1 release.

The following rules apply:

+ preferably just translation or blocker fixes
+ only cherry-picking from libreoffice-3-4 branch
+ 2 additional reviews needed; 2nd reviewer pushes
+ no regular merges back to anything

The 'libreoffice-3-4' branch is still active, will be used for the next
bugfix release (3.4.4). Please read more at

Now, if you want to switch your clone to the libreoffice-3-4-3 branch, please

./g pull -r

git config --global push.default tracking

When you do git push with this, git will push only the branch you are
on; e.g. libreoffice-3-4-3 when you have switched to it.  This will
save you some git shouting at you.

 I've no idea about the RC3 build-planning, but I will ask the Dutch list 
 for people to do some extra checking on matrix functions. Should some 
 fix be needed, that possibly could be included too, since there is a new 
 build to be done?

I have just tagged sources for 3.4.2-rc3 and we are going to launch the
builds.

Anyway, testing is still welcome. You do not need to wait for the rc3
build. There are only few small changes. It will take few more days
before we have the build and before we mark it as 3.4.2-final. If you
find a problem in rc2 it will be most likely in rc3 and vice versa.

 I see that bug #37488 is not listed, though it is fixed.

The list of changes is generated from the git commit logs. The bug
#37488 started to work accidentally. There was no commit associated with
it.

I am afraid that the list newer will be 100% because people sometimes
forget to mention bug numbers in commit messages. I guess that we do not
want to force bug number in every trivial commit. If it is not
mentioned, it is rather a detective work to find it ;-)

+ only safe bug fixes
+ no UI changes


[*] send mail to the libreoff...@lists.freedesktop.org mailing list;
use [REVIEW] in mail subject; put experts into CC if known;
attach patch or mention link to the commit in master or
another branch

I can't believe that the bug have had low severity for so long. Thus it
was hidden amongst other bugs.

[libreoffice-l10n] [ANNOUNCE] Branch libreoffice-3-4 created

Hi all,

as promised, we have created a branch for the stabilization of the
3.4.x releases, called 'libreoffice-3-4'. It is based on master, last
pull on April 1, 2011 at about 12am UTC.

The following rules apply:

+ only bugfixes allowed
+ no approval needed during beta phase (two weeks after branch)
+ 1 approval needed during rc phase
+ 2 approvals with different/no affiliation needed for late
  features

Please commit fixes into the branch to make sure that we have them in
the release. All changes will be regularly merged into master, so you
need NOT commit them twice.


The 'master' branch is used for 3.5 development and has the rules:

+ free commit; do your best to do not break build and
  functionality
+ any development allowed

Now, if you want to switch your clone to the libreoffice-3-4 branch,
do:

./g pull -r
./g checkout -b libreoffice-3-4 origin/libreoffice-3-4

Hopefully it will work for you :-)  Most probably, you will also want to
do (if you haven't done it yet):

git config --global push.default tracking

When you do git push with this, git will push only the branch you are
on; ie. libreoffice-3-4 when you have switched to it.  This will
save you some git shouting at you.

Hi all,

Similarly to the release of 3.3.1, we have created a branch for the
stabilization of the 3.3.2, called 'libreoffice-3-3-2'. It is based on
the tag libreoffice-3.3.2.1 for the 3.3.2rc1 release.

The following rules apply:

+ any commit has to be reviewed by 3 people
+ preferably commit only translation fixes, or blocker fixes
+ only cherry-pick from the libreoffice-3-3 branch

The 'libreoffice-3-3' branch is still active, will be used for the next
bugfix release (3.3.3), and has the following rules:

+ any commit needs review by 1 person
+ only safe fixes are allowed
+ changes are regularly merged into master

The 'master' branch is used for 3.4 development and has the rules:

+ free commit; do your best to do not break build and
  functionality
+ any development allowed
+ 3.4 feature freeze and branch point on March 21
